How is this course rated in the top ten if it has never had a tournament yet? Can someone post a list of the ranked courses in NC please. I'm wondering if this comes from the Lowe rating scale, which in that case, nevermind.

I think he is referring to the SSA rating assigned courses on degree of difficulty. Sounds like an MTL question, he should know the answer, or has data on where the ratings of courses is located. MTL, any help in this area?

Well since there has never been a PDGA tournament on the course, there is no offical SSA for the course yet.\

Even so, SSA only deals with a courses difficulty, not how "good" of a course the course is.

Peoples opinions of what a good and bad course will always be different. Like for me, I don't think Zebulon is all that great of a course, however, many people would say it is one of the top 5 courses in the state. Just difference on opinion.

Lots of people have opinions and I think that comment was just an one persons opinion.

Well it has elements of many courses. The maps - even the aerial map I did can't show the true course. Holes 2,7,8,9,16,17 use an old fire road as fairways. The biggest factor is the elevation changes. Hole #1 is one of the shortest. Its a down hill turn-over shot drop about 30 with tight trees. Hole #4 335 / 498 somewhat open fairway slopes right to left Elevation drop about 35 tee is on left side. Basket in the middle.

These are just a few things that makes this course stand out. You have to play it to believe and understand

At least let us get one round from the longs, please.

MTL21676
Sep 19 2007, 03:04 PM
all advanced players have all the same talents and skills as pros, just lack consistency.

99 out of 100 times, they should play the same layout as the open players.

I would agree, Advanced at the long tees. They deserve that.

Sep 19 2007, 08:25 PM
If elevation drops and rises are the only factor making this what people feel are a top ten course, then obviously the new Richmond Thrill is number one in the top ten NC courses. Ramcat should be number 2. So can someone post this mysterious top ten list already so we can have something else to discuss, dispute, and ponder why over?

So, how bout them long tees? TD? Scott? Bueller?

cwphish
Sep 19 2007, 08:26 PM
Oh, and please do both rounds from the long tees. One round of each will only fudge the ratings for everyone, unless the pro's play the same.

There is no offical list. We all have different opinions on what is good and what is great and what is bad.

Apparently, Steve feels that Fox Chase is a top 10 course in NC.

I would asume the only person we could really ask would be Lowe, but most people do not agree with his opinions.

As far as the top 10 courses, I'll list my top 10, in order.

1. Hornests Nest (Charlotte)
2. Renny (Charlotte)
3. The Meadow (greenville)
4. Tar River (Franklinton)
5. Buckhorn (Raleigh)
6. Castle Hayne (WIlmington)
7. Barnet Park (Kinston)
8. Barber Park Greensboro)
9. Glenburnie Park (New Bern)
10. Cedarrock (Burlington)

Courses that I'm sure most people would list in thier top 10 and reasons why they are not in mine...

Zebulon - I feel there are too many boring holes on this course. Many people feel this is a top 3 course in the state, I think it is out of the top 10. I would put it around 12 - 14ish I would say.
Sugaw Creek - a great course, but a little much of the same shot for me to really get into it
Chapel Hill - Would be number 11 on the list, miss the original course a lot.
Mars Hill - heard nothing but great things, but I have never played it.
Festival Park / Forrest Hills - These are temp courses and unless they play a somewhat consistent layout every year like Hampton Park in Charleston, can't put them on the list.
Hickory - Too many holes I don't feel are good holes, but I do like the course. Another one I would list in the 12 - 14 range
Most Homegrown courses - most of them are not the style of golf I perfer. Tar River is considered a Home Grown, but due to its professional design by Carlton Howard and breath taking 17th and 18th holes, it was in the list for sure.
Cedar Hills - my home course, but not enough score seperation for me.

I guess my point in posting this is people are going to immediatly say "Gee why does MTL have this over that? Why does he think this course is so great, but not that course?"

I am just proving my point that we all have different opinions. There really is no way to get a top 10 b/c we will all disagree about certain things.

wyatt,

David and I definitely plan on showing. Id have pre-reg'd us both but am too lazy (I'll admit it) to do so without paypal or some equivalent. Dowloading a form printing it out filling it out, and mailing it (with the uncretainties involved in that) make it a less desireable option than showing up and registering if I don't think it will fill in advance. Just my viewpoint for what it's worth for promoters - my thoughts probably represent many others as well.

very good point.

The reason that Cedarrock is not boring to me - decent ammount of elevation, multiple layouts, and very very scenic

Barber made the list b/c the open part of the course has lots of elevation and the back is wooded with some really good holes.

Simma,

Glad to hear you are coming out. I wanted to address the issue of Advanced players playing from the long tees at Fox Chase:

We have advertised the tournament as being played from the am tees for all but the Open Division. We did this in the interest of time. The course takes some time to play, and we were concerned with the ability of getting the rounds completed if we moved Advanced to the long tees.

I will speak to all of the Advanced players that are there on Saturday and find out what they think about playing from the long tees. It is possible that we can move at least one round to that position if the players present agree to do so. That will be a decision that I have to make on Saturday.

That said: those of you that have not yet played the course should not be disappointed in playing the am tees. The course is still a challenge from there. It is not an easy course by any means. I think that the short tees will challenge the Advanced players. Come out and see for yourself!!

cwphish
Sep 20 2007, 07:56 PM
Steve,
Thanks for considering a change to the long tees. I have played the course a handful of times, and I really don't think that it will impede time for the Advanced players to play the longs. Please also consider having/allowing the advanced field to play both rounds the same as the pro's as it will be better for unified ratings. Thanks sincerely for listening and considering a change. I will be coming regardless now with Chris Howard. Howie will play pro, and most likely I will do the same, unless the Advanced field gets to play longs both rounds. The low entry fee allows for this, and is greatly appreciated. See you Saturday morning!

Not a problem. We want this tournament to be successful and we especially want to get the Charlotte players out here. We come into Charlotte regularly to play and enjoy it. It really isn't a bad drive to get to the course, in fact, it takes less time to get here than to get across town in Charlotte traffic!! Come out and breath some of the country air. I want to thank everyone who played in the first Slappy's Revenge Tournament in Albemarle. I know that I enjoyed having everyone out at the course and running my first PDGA tournament as a TD.

I've read the suggestions and appreciate everyone who submitted their comments to me. One that I wish we would have followed up on and I apologize for not doing so, was to have water out on the course. It was quite a bit hotter than in previous days and this would have been a big help to players. We will in the future, I promise you that!!

For the local ADGA members, congratulations to Scott Sproule, who finished third in the Open Division; David Wiggins Jr, who finished seventh in Advanced; John Robinson, who finished second in Intermediate; Andrew Coggin, fourteenth in Intermediate and Wyatt Coggin, seventeenth in Intermediate.

We look forward to having you back for more tournaments here at Fox Chase. Give us a call if you are in the area and are looking for some friendly competition and perhaps we can play a couple rounds.

Again, thanks to everyone. Good luck to those playing in Salisbury tomorrow!! Give em hell Todd!!
