Co-host Paul "Mr. B" Belyea and myself will be bringing it to you live from the course via the world wide web from USDGC again this year. It was a great sucess last year and it will be event better this year. I just wanted to let the cat out of the bag so get ready to get nothing done at work while the leaders are on the course. We will bring you live and recorded interviews from all of your favorite and not so favorite players as well as loads of inside info straight from the course at the best tournament in disc golf.

We will be monitoring this message board and one or two others as well as email. Start thinking about questions that you would like us to ask, and or info you may have wanted and never knew who to ask.

The Dotmeister can't be stopped.

I'd like to see a player's face smile back at me when I move the cursor over a dot so I don't have to remember who is what color. (Not that I'll be anywhere near a computer, though when the action is hopping). Can that happen?

You really only need those on 3 holes, Hole 1, 13 aka 888, and 17. Definitely pucker time on those 3 tees.

Years ago when they were OLN (and in minimal distribution) the PDGA did indeed pay for and receive some production and broadcast services on that network (a Worlds, I think).

As has been pointed out many times before, money and numbers talk. Bicycling is a huge sport in world-wide terms. Disc golf is not, yet.

Did see some kid Scrabble on one sports network or another the other day. Will wonders never cease?

Even if it didn't do well, I think the fact alone that Disc golf was once on cable TV 11 years ago and given the progression of the sport in terms of the number of courses, disc sales, PDGA members, and exponentially increasing # of recreational disc golfers in those 11 years, I can't believe that we can't get more airtime if someone is working on this...if we don't I think that should be a priority for our sport

I've got a question for Kevin "Mr Dot" Smith. Although, I suppose it's something I could have asked him in this forum.

It "Dot" technology was pretty stable last year, and with even more development time and features added, it sounds like it's going to be even better this year. How much time went into it's development. What technologies are being employed, from the server software down to the walkie talkies? Is this something that you'd be interested in making available to the NT tournaments or others (assuming they wanted to take on the additional work necessary to do it)? Is this technology owned by the PDGA?

The Dots are very virtual spectator friendly and, in my opinion, add another level of professionalism to the presentation of disc golf in general. NBA and other sports have similar technologies and your implementation is just as professional as theirs. Thanks for all the work and I'll definitely be following them dots from work!

Stan,
The development of the Dots started in mid August of 2006 as Jonathan Poole and I were watching the coverage of the PDGA World Championships online. We were talking on the phone, both in front of our computers discussing the pros and cons of online coverage. Both thinking about how we can set the bar higher for the US Championship.

JP had concerns of how many windows he had open at one time while watching the live scoring. Including a pdf map of the course and the live scoring window and the site. Then it was born that we would try to combine all of these into one screen. It took about 1 month to develop the app and another few weeks to tweek it to perfection before the tournament. During this testing period, we fooled around with adding discs to the graphic to show the position of the player. (Mike Norris was heavily involved in this discussion as well as testing. Chris 'Stick' MacLeod was also another chief tester.)

Last years dots worked so well that it has become a staple of the online coverage at the US Championship, but I could not just let it be. We are always looking for ways to make it better. This year took me 3 months to develop the app and I am still testing it. I have heavily compressed and optimized the files to make sure the downloading is at a minimum, cross your fingers.

I am sure that anyone can take a look at what we are doing and make their own version that accomplishes the same thing until we can get some TV love. It takes alot of time and passion to pull it off, as well as 4 dedicated and excited people. Chris MacLeod, Mike Norris, Erik Speight, Kevin Smith.

As of right now the dots are evolving, so I am not sure who owns them other than the fact that this is Innova's tournament and they pay for me to make this happen. Without them I would not be doing exactly what I want and love.

Although this technology only has a 2 week shelf life before I throw it away and start fresh from what I have learned, I still don't want to give away all the secrets. This is what I am going to tell you, it may not be true...

Each throw that is made will be marked using a complex new SNMS Foil Webnet Interactive Dot Laser System. Every 45 seconds the dots will be updated for the world to watch! And the dots may have a little attitude this year.

Its late for it to be included this year, but looking at what MLB.com does with their lines for individual pitches, any chance NEXT YEAR we could see actual lines demonstrating the flight path taken on a throw?

So instead of just a dot representing where player A (we'll call him TTTThumbbber) is we see a faint (maybe semi-transparent) line from teepad to where TTTThumbbber's drive landed, and another to where TTTThumbbber's next shot landed, each following a line similar to the one his throw took. That'd be really cool.

Too bad for Hans Tegeback from Sweden who came to hole 17 with a -4 score.... He shot a twelve and followed it up with a seven on 18. Ouch!!!

Brian,

Would you mind getting some of the top players to provide some insight into their practice regimine. Listening to Kenny's comments about being a dad and not being able to be gone as much, I am curious if there is something that can be shared to help players improve their game when they are not getting to play as many tournaments.

Mace... when you talk to Marty about the 26 let him know that thats nice and all but he shoulda put a couple more strokes on there to break the record... according to World record page... http://www.frivolist.com/index_6.htm

the current record for highest score on any hole is a 27!

Oct 03 2007, 05:22 PM
here's a couple things from the Records page...

looks like he should've broke the 2nd record listed though!

Highest Pro Score on one hole in tourney
27 by ??? PGA National course during the storm of the century.(See DGWN #47-IBTWHA #5-P.40-42)

(Huge apologies to John Andrews who was reported to have held this dubious honor. The real owner of this distinction has not stepped up to claim it)

Most OB's on one hole
Bobby Jones (PDGA #3087) splashed 9 discs in a lake @ hole 12 during a tourney downpour @ Firefighters Park in Rochester, MI.

vonDrehle
Oct 03 2007, 05:27 PM
throw 1, drop 2, throw 3, drop 4, throw 5, drop 6, throw 7, drop 8, throw 9, drop 10, throw 11, drop 12, throw 13, drop 14, throw 15, drop 16, throw 17, drop 18, throw 19, drop 20, throw 21, drop 22, throw 23, drop 24, throw 25 and make putt.

If that is how it happened that would be 12 shots OB.

Looks like Baartman, Climo and Brinster got threes on 11 but it still looks like it might really play as a par 5, especially now that the SSA is rolling in close to 70. BTW, if a player shoots more than 60 points below their rating, their score isn't used to determine the SSA and ratings for that round. So those double digit scores on 17 may not boost the SSA for today.

Good discussion on growth of the sport. It doesn't just happen overnight, at least not if the players are to still have some control. It took ball golf hundreds of years to get to where it is today. It has taken the USGA and PGA decades to make their sport into one with mass appeal and enough interest to generate viewership and dollars.

You can't just make disc golf BIG overnight - it takes patience and long-term committment.

Kudos to you guys on the air.

go to the USDGC leaderboard page (http://www.usdgc.com/10/03/leaderboard) and the click on the picture.

You probably want the individual rounds rather than the overall. The site was up and down today, so probably expect more of the same throughout the week as folks tune in more and more. THen again, maybe the USDGC folks are on top of that and trying to fix it :)
