Hi,

I've read a few ideas on team competitions, including doubles, but they always seem to be run separately to the main, individual competition.

I'm running an event this w'end that will combine a team comp with the regular event on the 2nd / final day with the aim to increase interest for those who might be out of contention for the top of each division.

These are the rules I am going to be using for the comp:

-------------
The event is open to any 3-person team registered prior to the start of the round. The competition will be over the 18 holes of the final round.
A player may be in more than one team. (might still change this)
The team registration fee is $5.
All money raised will be re-distributed as prizes.

Scoring
Each team will comprise of three people, playing & scoring as individuals, but whose scores will also be used to calculate the team score.
Each hole has been assigned a letter B, W or T, shown on the scorecard, to identify which scoring method is used to calculate the team score for the hole.
The methods are:
Best Score (B) The best score of a team member for the hole is counted. eg, for scores of 2, 3 & 6, the team score would be 2 for the hole
Worst Score (W) The worst score of a team member for the hole is counted. eg, for scores of 2, 3 & 6, the team score would be 6 for the hole
Total Score (T) The sum of all team member scores for the hole is counted. eg, for scores of 2, 3 & 6, the team score would be 11 for the hole

There are three of each B, W & T for each nine holes, with the order different for the second nine holes.
Any playoff holes required to separate tied winning teams will be done using the Best Score (B) method.

---------

I like the idea that the whole team will have to play well to score well.

Obviously the number of people per team could be increased depending upong the size of the event.

The other part of the team comp is for two selected teams to represent Australia & New Zealand in a head-to head battle.

It will be interesting to see how it goes.

Thoughts?

Interesting... I like that idea.
Why not make the team registration fee $6 instead.
How are you going to handle payout?

Yes, $6 makes more sense - easier to collect.

As for payout, I don't know.

In the end we didn't have the numbers for anything apart from the Aus - NZ challenge event, so it wasn't a factor.
(We only had 10 players today - goes to show how big the sport is in Brisbane, Australia at present)

However, as an event, it was interesting and made for a good competition.

Here is a brief run-down of the event...

Team Australian consisted of:
Tim Marchbank
Paul Arden
Andrew Ferguson

Team New Zealand consisted of:
Simon Feasey
Russell Meehl
Greg Sparksman (honorary - he wanted to be one)

The event consisted of 27 holes scored using either Best Team Score, Worst Team Score or Total Team Score for each hole.

After 18 holes it was all tied at 102 points each, after individual scores of:
Aus - 57, 65, 63
NZ - 57, 66, 66
(so even though Aus scored better, NZ were still in there, because of the scoring format)

During the final nine, the top four players were still scoring for the individual comp, while one from each team, Paul & Russell, were able to play just for the team.
Unfortunately Paul was reading the wrong hole scoring legend, and so on the 8th hole he read it as a B (best score counts) and as he had just seen his team-mate in the group ahead of him, Andrew get a 2, he went for it, thinking it wouldn't matter and took a 6. It was actually a W (worst score counts) hole, so his score counted. However it didn't really matter as the event was won on the two preceding holes (both T - total score holes) where Team Aus scored a 9 (3,3,3) and 12 (3,5,4) vs Team NZ's 13 (5,4,4) and 13 (3,6,4).

So the final result was:

1st Final Total
Aus: 102 53 155
NZ: 102 56 158

As a format, I think it worked pretty well.

Things you need:
Pre-planning of which holes get what method
Appropriately marked scorecards
Additional scorecards for calculating team totals. (and someone who can add up)
or a spreadsheet to calculate the scores for you.

If you'd like to see a copy of the scorecards, & spreadsheet used for the competition, PM me with your email & I can send it through.
