Most of us who live in Beaver county would like to see a course come to us in the future. Economy is allright... but it lacks the panache of the local courses around here. I've already made J Gary salty about this topic (me being a non member which is soon to be corrected)... but I would really love to see his reaction to some of land we've been looking at.

Brady's Run Park is a prime spot for a course in the future. Unbelievable hills and unspoiled forest with tons of room to just go nuts. I know that Mack, Corey, Ted and myself would all be down to make it happen on whatever we have to do. We understand that the PFDS has made huge strides to get us some of the worlds best courses. I certainly don't want to sound like a booby with this post (i.e. build another course dudes!)... I just think that the place is begging for some pins to go in.

So whatever we can do to open that box would be great... but I have no clue where to start. Anyone else ever been there? Tons of space being unused there.

I've actually been thinking about a dgc proposal for Brady's Run. They definitely have the room for a course! I hope to approach the county with a proposal this fall....

That would be a sweet location for a course. It's actually not that far from Knob - you just take Rt. 228 straight over to the river. Unfortunately it looks like there is no exit from the Beaver Valley Expressway (Rt. 60) into Brady's Run County Park if you were coming from the airport.

I'm salivating while looking at this on Google Earth. I can only imagine the elevation changes and the terrain south of South Drive, or the land west of the lake between Rt. 60 and the lake, or the land northeast of the baseball fields next to Rt. 51 (Constitution Blvd.)

You are right about the land between the ball fields and the lake... that would be my best bet. I like the look of it... it's just begging to be a banger. No one likes to rent up there because the pavilions aren't as nice as the other side of the lake. It kind of gets overlooked. Good parking, pavilion options... I can only imagine...

As far as getting to it from the parkway... that's no big deal. Pretty easy directions... jump off the bridge with your bag and a chute. lol

Also, us locals to this area have a line on potential sponsors that could help us raise more loot and donate the needed materials. Not too mention we could host a shoot during the maple syrup festival. All you can eat pancakes before you go play... yum.

DO IT!!!!!!!!!!!!! I just got back from playing 5 courses on my trip to the smoky mountains, and none of the courses even came close to the quality of our courses here in PA. If the proposal comes through, I'm sure that we will have more than enough people itching to design another championship caliber course. The key is to allow for change as the design goes through. Take your time and build it well. I hope it happens!!

From what I've seen of Brady's Run Park, it would be a great site for DG. Absolutely a proposal should be made for a course in Beaver County Parks, and a Beaver County Club should be formed to lead the effort.

Rex, I was never against the idea of courses in Beaver County -- my complaint is with people who expect someone else to do the work. We talked out our differences, and I was very excited to see you join the PDGA and play in the SBCPFDO. I can name at least 5 disc golfers who live in Beaver and would be an excellent nucleus for a club there. I would love to join such a group.

I urge you to join the PFDS and attend our Membership meeting at 12:30 on Sunday 8/12 after the Devotional. Your input is valued -- and as a new PFDS member, you get a free lunch!

I agree 100% with J. Gary. After all the hard work and blood, sweat and tears that were shed in the last few years to install the Moraine State Park and Deer Lakes courses, the same 5 or 6 guys cannot be expected to install the next course in Beaver County or elsewhere around Pittsburgh. Beaver county locals and other PFDS members will be needed to lead the charge in the coming years.

Unfortunately, I missed the meeting. I feel bad about it. Things have come up that make me need to be at home right now, and take care of my business and my family. I am glad I at least had the opportunity to play in the PFDO and learn so much by doing so. The one thing that I would stress is how good we have it here.

When I play our courses, I am struck by the recurring thought that this is more than sport... it's an artform. PFDS has brought us disc golf courses, events and friends to feel good about. And it feels to me that it's only going to continue getting better the more support the club gets by growing membership, and the help the new membership can bring to the table if a job is needed to be done.

Corey, Ted and myself have been going to Brady's Run and looking at it for the last three years with Disc Golf on the brain as we walk around. We can imagine that with all the space there and the beauty of the park, a masterpiece can be built... further we imagine the ammount of local resources through family and business associations that would make it possible for us to get the support to work on the project. So there's three of us looking at it, thinking about it and wondering what we might be able to do to help get it done.

So I would say that we are onboard to help out and absorb alot of the work if a proposal were made. I feel lame that I have not joined and missed this meeting. That doesn't change my feelings that I will now say and hope that they are taken well as only they should be.

I am overwhelmed by the accomplishments of the PFDS. I can't imagine the things I have participated in being any more fun than they were. I can't imagine our courses being better than they are. I recognize that it also took alot of organization, planning, development and hard work. But the end result is pure delight for so many done by a small, but well organized and highly professional effort amongst the members.

J. Gary- You sir, are an artist. An artist needs to feel support to continue their work. So I feel you're exactly right about this subject that I brought up. If someone comes to you jokingly with a serious subject about your passion, you have to tell them the right way in which to express their request. As an artist myself... I have to believe that with or without the support, my next effort will be my best. (That's just my mindset, no reflection on you unless you want to hear I think, instinctively through the years you've accomplished that and will continue to do so). I have the highest regard for you as a designer of great courses, and a hell of a nice guy to be around.

I hope to discuss this formaly as a member as you have requested that I do. I also believe a Beaver County group should be formed to help organize and absorb the demands of the work efforts of any proposed plans. It's only fair to you and to PFDS.

With all that said... I wish were disc golfing instead of doing what I have to right now.

Right now, unfortunately, I have to absorb the demands and rigors of my life due to taking so much time off to enjoy disc golf...

Also, it's exciting to hear about Moraine... you guys do good work and I can't wait to get involved even though I'm at home with my glassblowers dunce hat on.

So contact has been made, the proposal has been forwarded that J. Gary made for Deer Lakes and the overall vibe is good from Beaver County parks director Tom King. There will be a meeting sometime next week or the week after to check out possible sites on the park grounds.

Jerry- If we can schedule the meeting during a time you can make it, we would love to have you there. We plan on taking a basket with us (Corey Diab and Myself) and our bags to play a little in the proposed area that they gave up right off the bat.

Now the area that they offered us was not the original idea we had... but we'll check it out and see if it has potential. Corey seemed to think that we weren't going to be able to do it there and have it as nice as the other areas we've been drooling over.

Anyone else want to help us out that wants to... contact me via email or call (724) 378-1639. I sure hope we can get them excited about this project... there are enough of us close to Brady's run to put in some serious work time and get this baby rolling.

Keep your fingers crossed.

You may want to show them PDGA Disc Golf Course Design Standards (http://www.pdga.com/makecrse.php) which recommend an acre per hole for a full length Championship caliber course. It is not unreasonable to ask for a minimum of 20 acres which would include a practice basket and room for a tournament tent, warming up, temporary hole, CTP contest, ring of fire, etc.

Rex_Trimm
Sep 06 2007, 12:51 PM
Just sent him the message regarding the acre per hole scenario along with all of J.Gary's info. I know there is a ton of room there for it... we might be able to talk him into giving us a big area that is relatively unused but still kept up. Our hope is that 18 at a par 66 can be put in with room for the future to perhaps build more if the course becomes a success.

I'll be unavailable Sept 17-19, but any other time might work for me. It just depends on my work schedule. I do have some materials which can be used for the meeting....."What is Disc Golf" brochures from the PDGA as well as merchandise brochures from disc manufacturers.

Is this gentleman, Tom King, in charge of all Beaver County parks or just Brady's Run? I don't want to detract from the focus on Brady's Run, however, I know of a better park (for disc golf) within the county.

Rex_Trimm
Sep 06 2007, 11:25 PM
Yes, King is the head guy for all of the Beaver County parks and the headquarters for Beaver County is Brady's Run. We'll take a look at getting this at a time when you can be there... I just think it would be cool for you to be there.

Ok, so here's my latest thoughts on this. The guy is not responding to me other than a phone call, the email thing is dead with him. The area they offered in Brady's Run to look at is not good. Although the future may be bright for a course there, other options might be more plausible.

I would like to examine Jerry's suggestion of the park in Ambridge. Beaver County parks are surely underfunded, so this may be a task to get something going with them.

I do think that a Beaver County chapter (and team) should become a new part of PFDS. It would be kind of neat if Jerry (ahem) would be our president and the other residents that are PFDS could get involved in a project that would be more fun than we could pay for. J.Gary had the right idea on this. A Beaver County task force is needed.

I tried to call you Gotcher, but I bet you were doing something fun.

I got a very good reply from the Ambridge Parks authority to attend a meeting for the restoration of Walter Panek park on Nov. 8th at 7pm at 600 11th st. They are very interested in having a proposal made for a disc golf course. The land requirements and monitary issues seemed to be of no hinderance to hearing what could be done there, and done as a partnership through the park and PFDS... which sounded to me as if much of the labor and money is already there due to the nature of the shape the park is in these days. Grants and state moneys have yet to be budgeted, so that's why we need to go to this meeting.

Jerry and J.Gary already know about this, I would urge all the Beaver County players to attend (and anyone else who wants to come and support the motion to build a course). Someone who knows how to contact Speaker should do so because this will be in his backyard... and I never see the dude these days.

I will be missing my own induction into the American Craft Museum in NYC that night so I can go to this meeting.

Wish us luck.

Walter Panek Park (Ambridge Boro) is the location for the upcoming dgc proposal. The park is largely unused save for the ball fields and some deteriorated restrooms.

I have been unable to reach the manager of Ambridge borough, however, I did confirm the town meeting is scheduled for tonight in the Administration Department of the municipal building:

600 11th Street

Meeting is scheduled for 7:00 pm. There will be several topics of discussion concerning the borough with one of them being improvements at Walter Panek Park. I do not know if the council has allotted time for the PFDS to disc disc golf. I guess we will show up and see what happens.....

The Ambridge Boro meeting went very well last night. The council seemed intrigued by disc golf and it's high benefit-to-cost ratio. Once the meeting concluded, several council members and boro citizens hung around for 15-20 minutes to discuss disc golf! The recreation director seemed very interested as he specifically left the conference room to retrieve an aerial map to discuss possible course locations of the course. The good news is they will be inviting us back for a January meeting which will focus entirely on the '08 renovations plans of Walter Panek Park! Special thanks to Mike Speaker and Rex Trimm for showing up to help represent....

Bravo Brother! That was smooth. I almost felt like I was going into a courtroom... but you should have seen em all sitting at the round table when Jerry handed them minnies and bag books.

The proposal is sick. I think Jerry put together an outstanding presentation that captured the board and most importantly got us talking with the right person who seemed very interested. I wouldn't be surprised if the next meeting we start getting the ball rolling.

I will start putting together a promo for youth league clinics that will target Ambridge, Aliquippa, Hopewell and nearby schools. Hopefully by using Economy for now, I can start to get the area kids introduced to the sport. By this next meeting it would be nice to have that promo ready to go and have a monthly educational shoot open to all ages new to the game.
