South Carolina Disc Golfers will soon have a chance to qualify for the most prestigious disc golf tournament in the world. The Upstate Disc Golf Club located in Greenville, SC and DISConcepts disc golf are proud to announce the qualifying event for the USDGC will be held at a new temporary tournament course in Greenville County at Lakeside Park. The South Carolina Championship Open (SCCO) will be a one day event held on September 8th 2007 in Greenville South Carolina and will play host to the SC state representative spot for the United States Disc Golf Championship held in Rock Hill South Carolina in early October. The goal is to promote the game of disc golf in Greenville County and the State of South Carolina with the winner of the SCCO receiving a full ride to the National Championships in STYLE! Many of the details are still coming together but those attending can expect a longer strategic USDCG type course and a tournament loaded with southern hospitality. The event will be open to all current South Carolina residents regardless of division, age, sex, or ability. If you would like to try and qualify, we would like to have you! I am curious, when I won it, they made me pass it down to the next place finisher because I was already qualified.. so its who ever wins? or is it the highest Sourh Carolina finisher? because I am sure there would be more outside comp if they knew it was open to the winner. and not just South Carolina Residents.. if it is only for SC I may move down there for a week!!..lol. keep 'em flying.. wanna give a shout out to Zack, and company!!! I miss you guys1

The Charlotte Open top finisher who is not already qualified gets a USDGC bid. But, NC has its own method to send a qualifier. I think it is a better method in that it rewards continued performance vice one day of competition, possibly one round. The Monday qualifying already exists for those who want to qualify in a one round format.

I think we should use a points system and make it eligible to current residents (in this calendar year) of the state who is giving out the bid. The point is to have a representative from each state. That way each state is represented in the United States Disc Golf Championship.

There is still no information available on this course existance or location on any of these 3 sites other than a blurb on SCDGO. Where specifically is this course and is it open for play?

My understanding is that this will be a temporary course in a park for which a permanent course is proposed. The event is happening, among other things, to promote disc golf and as a demonstration to put in the new course. Part of the idea is to do this every year---to use the USDGC/SC qualifier to promote a proposed course, a new course, a private course (as last year), etc.

I think---and I'm less certain here---that each state can have its own system to choose a representative, presumably at the discretion of the state coordinator. It could just go to a worthwhile volunteer.

A points sytem or short series would also be valid....just a little more complicated and require someone to keep up with it.

That all said, check with Harold, the SC SC, who can tell you more, including what percentage of what I just posted is correct.

I agree that a better method would be to offer the SC USDGC spot to a player who proves their disc golf skills over a series of events but to my knowledge nobody set anything up early in the year. I believe the last few years the spot was rewarded to the winner of the Govan tournament or next lowest scoring available player. Zack Rogers went to the USDGC last year and came up with the idea about hosting the qualifying event here in Greenville. I have been talking with people at Greenville County Recreation District about course development and suggested using a temporary layout at Lakeside Park in Greenville County. The design of the temporary tournament layout would play about 30% longer than what would be proposed for a potential permanent layout but both would be longer than any of the other courses in the area. Greenville County is looking at the tourism impact of installing new courses and this type of event could be a great tool in helping get the ball rolling. Our decision to run with the idea of hosting a USDGC qualifier came on pretty quickly and we just decided to step up to the challenge.
I have talked with Harold numerous times about the event and will provide more information as we secure details. You can find a little more information about the event at the Upstate Disc Golf updated last night in the Discussion section. www.upstatedgc.com (http://www.upstatedgc.com)
I will say this: It will be 2 separate rounds of 18 holes. Lowest single round gets the invitation to the USDGC and up to $1000 for expenses for the week in Rock Hill ,SC!
One Division – One Champion – One Payout!
I had thought at 1st we were going to have the event sanctioned (that is why I posted here at the PDGA site) but we decided not to. Sorry.
The Park is located 1 mile off of I-85 in Greenville SC. Heading South on I-85 from Greenville towards Atlanta Take the I-20 exit (Piedmont Hwy) and head South. The Park is located on the left one mile down. Tee #1 (603’) will be located next to the large concrete silo (left at the main entrance) playing “clockwise” around the park. www.upstatedgc.com (http://www.upstatedgc.com)

Thanks for the info. Look forward to seeing this course. (Now that I live 40 miles closer to Greenville, I like the idea of another, longer course there).

Other courses besides Govan were used in previous years for the S.C. spot....I remember Crooked Creek having the spot at least one year. (I don't remember anyone offering such a sweet package to the qualifier).

We had volunteered Stoney Hill for a similar event in the future. There may be other, perhaps better, possiblities with new courses in the works in various parts of the state. On the other hand, if Upstate is raising the bar with an expense-paid ticket to Winthrop, it might be a tough act to follow.

I stopped by there on Saturday - couldn't play though. Only eight players showed up. Anyway, I think Zach Rogers took it.

You may have missed your chance. I surmise that in the future, assuming the SC spot is chosen by tournament, it will be part of a regular tournament format (Pro & Am divisions, normal payouts, etc.), as was done in the past.
