This one has taken a little while to get done, but we're seeing some significant progress. We've installed all baskets for the back nine (except one new long pin, for signature 18, which is on order) and are now ordering 27 tee signs (each hole has 3 tees) and fly pads to complete that side of the course.
The front nine needs some sponsor help. If you are so inclined, check out our site at www.4141discgolf.com/pymcourse.html (http://www.4141discgolf.com/pymcourse.html) and pick out a front nine hole or tee! Earn good karma disc points :Dit's gotta be worth a stroke somewhere...
The course is located in NW Pennsylvania, about an hour or so East of Cleveland at PA's largest State Park. There are 3 sets of tees and many alternate pins, allowing for FOUR permanent layouts (red, white, blue, gold). With 6 par 4s and 3 par 5s, overall course par is 66 for all layouts.
The area we used was mostly maintained already, so it's not too rough and rugged (read, not much shule).
This area of Pennsylvania is really booming with beautiful places to play. The PFDS group in Pittsburgh has put together several awesome courses. If you haven't been out this way, there's plenty here to warrant a trip!
We've submitted the paperwork for a one day PDGA event on Sunday, September 23rd, to introduce the course. Hope to see you out there.
Oh, we're also part of Warren, OH's Superman Saturday rotation. The next Superman round to be held at Pymatuning is Saturday, June 30th at 10am.
Sorry for the book. Out.

I haven't played the new course at Pymatuning State Park, but just looking through the pictures on the website, I can tell that this is going to be one spectacular course! It's yet another in the series of world class courses installed over the last five years in western Pennsylvania with true pro par four and pro par five holes for gold and blue level disc golfers. Playing a round at Moraine State Park, Knob Hill, IUP College Lodge, and the new course at Deer Lakes Park near Pittsburgh feels like you are actually playing GOLF!
In fact, with the addition of the Pymatuning State Park course, I would say now that western Pennsylvania's courses have eclipsed that of the eastern portion of the state which is really saying something, considering the wonderful courses at Nockamixon State Park, Little Lehigh Parkway, Tyler State Park, Tinicum Park, Codorus State Park, Jordan Creek, Prompton Dam, and Hickory Run State Park.

Sounds and looks great. Is the back 9 playable right now? I'm going to be going through and would love to check it out.

Just sent a lead to J. Gary for a course south of Pittsburgh in the city of Washington. No more details at this point. Just an email referral.

That is very cool. I work in Washington and would be able to provide a lot of volunteer hours.

I wonder if this is the course in question?

A course in Washington would be nice - that's only about 30 minutes outside of Pittsburgh. If anything, a course on the south side of the city would be sweet; I often stay at hotels near the airport when I'm in town. All the premier courses (Moraine, Knob Hill, Deer Lakes) are well north of the city. I'd love to see a world class course at Settler's Cabin Park in Allegheny County.

Jeff,
Thanks for the link. I think that must be it. There was also this article about that meeting in the Washington Observer-Reporter last week (see link below). I've never been to Community Park but I can ask around at work tomorrow.
Does anyone know Ryan Julian? Seems like he could use some help. Observer-Reporter (http://www.observer-reporter.com/OR/Story/06_16_S_Strabane_seconds)

The back nine IS playable. The targets are in. You can get scorecards with a course map on the reverse, either at the park office or from the course site www.4141discgolf.com/pymcourse.html (http://www.4141discgolf.com/pymcourse.html) - Or you can use the old fashioned method and hook up with the course contact when you are in town and let him make sure you find your way around ;)
We'll have signs and pads up for the back, likely in early July. Now all tees are marked with flags and stakes.

Beautiful 80 degree sunny weather and recently mowed fields greeted the disc golfers for yesterday's Superman round. Those that stayed late were treated to a first class fireworks show over the lake put on by the park!
We got our first visit from a few Pittsburgh golfers and we played a full 18 from the gold tees. The only odd hole was 18, where we played to the short basket (the long is on order).
Our winning score was 65, with a 66 and 67 carded. The BIG score was 96, with several others in the 80s. Next time we'll play the white tees, so come back!! :D
There are now a couple of hundred feet of FlyPads in the park warehouse, and we're going to need a little help installing 20 tees in the next week or two. If you can help, let me know. See you out there next time - and see you Pittsburghers in a couple of weeks at the PFDO!

OK, there's likely a problem with installation this week. As posted by Jeff, a budget impasse looks like it's going to result in the shutdown of all state parks effective tomorrow (Monday, July 9th). Got a call to this effect from the park manager today.
Maybe there's some 11th hour solution to come, here's hoping

We just completed installation of 21 tee pads on the back 9! That's all the middles, all the longs, and select shorts (where needed for footing/erosion). Flyboy Reese put in an appearance and gave us tips and advice. The results are good, and early indications are that these will be an excellent surface to throw from. Thanks, Reese!
Back nine signs are on order and will be installed in a couple of weeks or so.
The front nine is progressing, too! We look to have everything wrapped up and pretty for our first PDGA event in September.
Keep up with course progress at www.4141discgolf.com/pymcourse.html (http://www.4141discgolf.com/pymcourse.html)
See a lot of you out at the PFDO!

Pymatuning State Park DGC is outstanding to say the least. Course designer, Rich Givens, did an excellent job with the overall par-66 design which will challenge any one of today's top players in the sport. The beautiful and lengthy layout provides "room to boom" off the tee, yet requires course management accuracy in many areas of the design. I would not be surprised if this championship-caliber course will end up on several players' list of favorites. :)
Attached below is a scorecard I used while playing a one round tournament (gold tees) there several weeks ago. I will definitely be mailing my entry fee for the September 23 tournament as soon as registration becomes available. I would highly recommend you all do the same!

I can't wait to play this course, Jerry!
Unfortunately I'll be up in Warren, VT during the weekend of Sep. 21-23 as Director of Scoring for the Sugarbush Open National Tour event and will miss the Northwest Pennsylvania Open. But I'm hoping to find another weekend in the month of September or October to get up to Pymatuning. Can't wait!
