Yup, yup, great tournament, great course, great guys, blah, blah, blah........ Why do you persist in playing this tournament the first weekend in September? I've told you repeatedly that the thousands of us disc golfers that also choose to murder songbirds will be otherwise occupied that weekend slaying doves. At least hundreds of us will be. Okay, okay I know of a minimum of three of us.... for sure. ;) /msgboard/images/graemlins/smirk.gif :D

I think I will be making a return to this event, after missing it last year. I really had fun the year before, but scheduling differences kept me away. but I will be making a great effoert to attend.. look foward to thoes great catching greens, and thoes flat landing surfaces with great interest..lol. I hope we muster up some salty vets, like J bird, The Tic "TAC", and Tim Barr. along with some of N.C's finest. hopefully WVO don't take away from the event.. I hope I see you all there..

The Hickory Classic is shaping up to set tournament records, but registration is capped at 90. Sign up now and don't get left out. I'm back and I shall update the registration list daily. As always, Freddy B is lining up great sponsors, but this year he's getting help. Thus there will be record additions to payout, for both pro cash and am merch.

Improvments for 2007:

+ Lunches included for all, Fuddruckers grilling at the park on Saturday and Gepetto's delivering pizza on Saturday (vegy options on request)
+ Online registration at active.com
+ Course improvements including new tee signs, bench upgrades, new gravel and mulch around several tees, and new restrooms (puddle free!)
+ Pro Added cash TBD, but WILL be most ever (well over last year's $500)
+ Lots of high value CTP's

Go to www.hickorydiscgolf.com (http://www.hickorydiscgolf.com) for entry form or link to online registration. Hope to see you in Hickraw!

Early registration is brisk. Just posted 20th name online. Much quicker to that total than last year.

I also prefered to do one set-up for four rounds, but the majority voted to switch them up. The good news is that everyone gets to play 2 rounds of the new, long #4 position. Bring a disk you can afford to skip off the road up the left side of the hole.

michaeljo
Aug 14 2007, 11:38 PM
oh come on 4 is just a little hyzer over the trees, unless you are lefty

vonDrehle
Aug 15 2007, 12:04 AM
21st name to add has been registered. The #4 long is a farther down and up to the left of the short so it is a little trickier now.

phluffhead
Aug 15 2007, 07:39 AM
He's played it and for him it's just a LITTLE hyzer around pine. There's no anhyzer for righties due to first tree on left off pad however learn a 350 sidearm up the road. The more I play the hole the less I like it until it gets cleaned up

michaeljo
Aug 15 2007, 10:55 AM

vonDrehle
Aug 15 2007, 11:48 AM
I'll have course pics up on the site either today or tomorrow so you will be able to see where it is at.

tjeffreys
Aug 15 2007, 11:49 AM
the shot is a 350ft spike hyzer around the pines that are just to the right of the short. a 2 possibility is there if you clear this gap with some height. the pin is located on a dirt mound thats probably 80 feet up the hill and to the left of the short. its a tricky green. once it gets trimmed up a little bit, it will make for an interesting hole.

phluffhead
Aug 15 2007, 11:56 AM
Tim I would suggest the straight shot over the short with a fast disc (maybe the destroyer or my favorite WARLORD)

phluffhead
Aug 15 2007, 11:59 AM
HEY Timmy, you can also go up the road with that stellar sidearm but watchout for trees on top of hill (like to kick OB) and the light post across street.

I played in Hickory yesterday for the first time in a good while, and the locals really have the course looking good! :) Lots of improvements throughout! Hole 1's tee made me feel like I was in Arizona somewhere, or maybe that was the intense HEAT!!! At one point during my first round (mid afternoon), about hole 11, I was thinking if I died here, they would find me during doubles later. :D HOT!

BIG UPS to the UFO CLUB OF HICKORY DGC for all their time and hardwork to pull off another great tournament this year!!!! :)

Course is looking better than ever! More money at stake than ever! Cool Glo Ontario Rocs with the Hickory stamp in the players pack. And, your entry fee covers your lunch provided by Fuddruckers on Sat., and some really good pizza place on Sun.!

Active.com is not my favorite way of using online registration. They want a lot of personal info, and they lead some people to believe you must get an account with them to sign up. Yes, its a great course, and tnmt. Just not a member of active, and after last year when my account got attacked from Australia. I am kind of cautious. Was looking forward to playing in the Grandmaster div. That would have been cool. Active.com is down until 10 AM tomorrow (Friday) due to my failure to read a calendar 3 months ago when I set this up. It will be back up from soon after 10 AM to 6 PM Friday, or until pre-reg gets to 90, whichever comes first. We are currently at 71. After 90 I start the stand-by list.

I am trying to be fair with the pay to play hard-line. I admit I made four early (weeks ago before we knew we were filling up)exceptions and I'll be glad to explain those exceptions in a PM, but please note: this is the first time we expect to hit 90 players, so letting someone in will knock someone else out. Nothing personal, I just don't want to exclude people because I may not have met them in favor of people I know and can trust to be here.
This is the first time I have used an online registration system (last year I sent out Paypal invoices). I appreciate the feedback, so please keep it coming, in a post or PM. The club and I will review whether we want to keep active.com for next year. Please let me know if you start getting junk mail from active or espn.

On happier notes: lunchies (no extra charge), payouts, trophies, ctp's, other prizes, and especially the course are primed for what looks to be one great Classic.

For those who have asked :There will be some extra meals available at $5 for spectactors/caddies. And there are non-meat choices for both lunchies.

Unless I open a pet cemetary probably not gonna increase business 'cause I'm killin' em graveyard dead........ or a restaurant..... You'd fight your Mama for dove breasts coming off the grill - hot coals, two minutes on the back, roll em over, minute and a half on the front, don't over cook em, pick em up and eat em right there coming off the grill. If you're the guy tending the grill, the reach with the long fork will let you out compete bystanders. :D

Thanks to everyone in Hickory for another great Hickory classic. The course looked better than I've ever seen it!

Congrats to JJ for getting a win this year.

The only negative from the tournament had nothing to do with the tournament - just the ratings. Probably some of the worst ratings I've seen in a long time. A lot of people got crapped on for some really good shooting.

Last year I shot two 54's on the longs. We did not play the long on 4, 9 or the left pin on 18 (the hardest one). Every one of these holes got tougher this year. Yet, my 54 this year was rated lower than last year. Absolute crap that a rating would be lower for the same score on a tougher layout.

Sorry, your perception it's a tougher layout doesn't hold up from the actual results. If a course has gotten more open, less schule, trimmed limbs - those things can make the course easier each year to offset what you think are tougher pin placements. Your memory isn't as good as the actual scores.

Please take ratings talk to rating forum

sorry Brad, but i think i need to say something about these ratings, even though its not going to do a bit of good.

now, i do not follow up very much on how these ratings calculated. but from what most people say, i gather that rounds are rated based on what other people shoot. what kind of consistency is that? what a 1025 rated golfer and a 900 rated golfer shoots, should have nothing to do with the way the rounds are rated, nothing whatsoever. just because a good golfer shoots bad, does not mean that the course is playing tougher, which is what the ratings suggest. this weekend, i feel alot of golfers deserved better round ratings. but it seems that just because local golfers that are rated fairly lower than the pros shoot hot, or the same score as a pro, the rating drops. and this seems to happen alot. so usually i consider a good round for me at or around 1010 to 1030. but this weekend my good rounds were 991 and 996? i will admit this is alot of my perception, but i think alot of the golfers this weekend feel the same way. chuck, if this is how your ratings are calculated, i would love for you to explain to me the consistency and logic behind them.

thanks,
JJ

I think a lot of the problem on the longs was holes like 4, 7, 8, 9, 10, and 16. With the exception of 4 and 8, I thought these were all good holes.

But, the problem is that there really is no skill separation on these holes. Most of the time there is no real difference and good drive and an ok drive on these holes b/c even the really good drive and the ok drive will yield 3's. The only real separation comes with an AWESOME drive (which won't happen much on these holes) and a terrible drive followed by a terrible approach.

Once again, let me say I am not saying these are bad holes. Just someone like JJ who was the best player this past weekend could throw really good drives on these holes and someone who finished in the top part of intermediate 100 points below him could throw an ok drive and both of these would yield 3s.

Then JJ only picks up strokes on these players 5 - 6 times instead of the normal 10 - 13 times. The computer doesn't understand these holes that most people will 3, sees that someone who is supposed to beat another player by 10 is only beating him by 4 and then all of the sudden, bad ratings.

I am a much bigger fan of the shorts on this course b/c then those good shots get 2's instead of 3s, especially on 4 7 9 10 and 16.

I was SHOCKED to see the ratings so bad on Sunday b/c these holes did spread out some of the skill issues that I was just talking about.

Ideally, I think a combo layout that Brad did when ran the tournament is the best thing for the course.

I think the best layout would be...Long 1, Short 3, short 4, long 6, short 7, short 9, short 10, long 11, short 16 and long straight 18.

However, I understand I am a minority in not wanting to play separate layouts, but I think that combination I listed would provide the best course, the most skill separation and the most accurate ratings.

ck34
Sep 05 2007, 10:27 AM
It looks like the course SSA is almost identical to previous years. The problem is not how the ratings are calculated but along the lines of what MTL is dicussing. Certain holes will not provide sufficient skill separation and a fixed versus dynamic SSA won't make the ratings any better. If a course has many of these holes, all of the ratings will be in a much tighter distribution that doesn't allow the top players to get ratings much better than their rating. It's a course design issue which we've also talked about at Castle Hayne where the distributions are tight. We don't know how to put a factor in the calculation to artificially spread ratings when courses like this are encountered. As MTL mentioned, a better selection of short and long holes might allow a better scoring spread and resulting ratings spread.

That's the problem though Chuck.

This years course has never been played and was much tougher (probably a full 2 shots) than in the past.

I'm telling you that it's not tougher if the scores don't say so. You've gotten better so you're bringing a higher rating to the table as a small part of the change. It's also possible that the changes brought these tweaked holes into the problem category we've been discussing.

well thats just it, the three holes that were different from last year are in that catagory.

But ask ANYONE who played...the course was def. tougher this year.

vonDrehle
Sep 05 2007, 11:45 AM
Not really that much tougher. Sure we played the new position on 4 and the far left position on 18 but both are still 2able, 4 more so if you have a good side arm. And maybe it is just me but I remember playing 9 long last year during the tournament.

ck34
Sep 05 2007, 11:57 AM
Chris just pointed out the ongoing problem with ever using fixed SSAs. First, the course changed so we don't know how to adjust it. Second, you can't remember the pin placements used the previous time. Third, weather can't be accounted for. Scores from enough propagators is the only valid way to determine the true course difficulty during a round. The loss of accuracy comes when you don't have enough propagators from a stats standpoint. But even with smaller numbers, the SSA value is still better and easier to determine than any method trying to guess what kind of adjustments would be required when the weather and the course changes.

BooneTOdd
Sep 05 2007, 12:29 PM
Honestly, from my point of view, the only hole that should of played tougher is hole 4 long, which I agree needs a fair-way.

The Hickory Club has done an amazing job and made a lot of really nice improvements to the course, including clearing out a lot of the brush/rough here and there, which to me makes several of the holes that much easier.

I think the best layout would be...Long 1, Short 3, short 4, long 6, short 7, short 9, short 10, long 11, short 16 and long straight 18.

2nd that! Although, I think a more consequential green would be cool for hole 7. Maybe at the top of the rivers bank? Drives would be a little more tricky as well. Right now, you can run at it from anywhere and kill it under the basket.

Don't get me wrong, Hickory's already an awesome course and I love it! But, since the sport has evolved why not use that experience and knowledge to make it even better, more FUN and Challenging! That goes for all older courses. It's almost ridiculous to continue doing something/anything the same way, when we've learned and now know and understand that there is a better way. That's why our government is so screwed up. :D You all know the saying, "Change is good". Nobodies perfect, no doubt about that. No doubt about it that every course could be a little better too. Bla, bla, bla......thats a different subject.

I don't understand the ratings, and I don't try too. That's the PDGA's job, and why I give them my money each year.

I also agree with this and put it to a vote but lost. It's hard to get a real vote when only 9 are at meeting. Also last year we played the same course except 18d and 4l. However, either I'm getting better or the course is actually playing easier. There are alot more local routes and just having the confidency that your not going to break an ankle on 15 and 16 now helps. Believe me the course is easier now then ever except 4. A -4 in the shorts should be an advanced round like the 965 I recieved and the -6 a 991 because it felt like crap to me. JJ still won no matter the ratings and I forgot Congrats. Innova has your trophy.
Also 8 is a great hole. People over think it. Rightie throw straight or a sidearm. I have plenty of rightie 2's on that hole.

Nifty pix. Sorry about the illness hitting you CvD. Jimi Roberts took some of the awards ceremony, but I haven't seen them yet.

As to the course tourghness, I heard someone complain about # 8 being a bad hole, but I said we have guys who regularly deuce it. It just punishes tree hits worse than most other holes. The best comment I heard about # 8 was the question about when Freddy was going to install the landscape lighting around the fine looking tee box.

justin_jernigan
Sep 06 2007, 01:15 PM
well, i have to say that i really like hickory, and i think most of the course is awesome, depending on short or long pins. as for hole 8 i wouldnt say it is the worst hole ive seen, but it is definitely not a good hole in my opinion. it can be too punishing for a good shot, and needs a very precise, awesome shot, and maybe even a little luck to get a jump put at the basket. there is one thing standing in the way of making it a fun, great tunnel shot hole, and its that tree in the middle of the fairway. like i said this is all just my opinion..

phluffhead
Sep 06 2007, 02:13 PM
But if you take out that tree the hole becomes a straight 240 shot which is boring. I have heard about opening the left side off the pad alittle to resemble the right side. This will allow a little s shot like the lefties throw. (or as I said before throw a rightie sidearm which most Pros should have) However, I remember Clee hitting that left line all 4 rounds two years ago.
Yes the hole can punish shots but isn't that the point. Kinda like the one on 3. However if you ever played the course three years ago that was the left edge of the woods and now it's kinda in the middle if you call the left side a route.

I duece bad holes all the time. Whether or not someone can duece a hole has no bearing on whether or not the hole is good.

Hole 8 is not a good hole and the sad thing about it is that it is SO close to being one of the most awesome holes you will see.

The one thing that all great holes seem to have in common is how simple they are.

Sep 06 2007, 02:41 PM
My suggestion for hole 8 would be to take out the 2 small trees on the left hand side of the fairway.

While it is true that taking out the large tree in the center would make it it a very cool hole visually I am not a fan of taking out a tree that is that large.

In the 4 rounds that I played it this weekend I only saw one player get up there for a putt. Granted he did it more than once but he also got very lucky.

In one round I watched 4 different types of throws hit the exact same tree.

I like this course but I feel that the weakest hole on the course is #8.

Thanks Dan. And sadly I am still sick and am not going to be able to do the tourney in Raleigh this weekend either. Might play dubs this Sunday though. But with #8 I can see where the hole might play better and look better with a few trees out but I personally don't have a problem with it the way it is now. I'm no pro so my expectations are lower but I always just play the hole for a par, and when the occasional birdie does come (all 3 of them) I just let out a woot. This is an Int. speaking though.

Same for me, and I am pro (although, couldn't claim that this past weekend :D)

Thats the point about this hole, not a lot of skill seperation.

I also think that the middle tree coming out would be the best solution, however, realize that it is tough to remove trees that size for many reasons.

Cleaning up the left side and allowing a similar style shot that lefties have would be a very nice change I feel.

I like hole 8!!!!

I hated it the first time I played it, but I think the rhodo bunker on the right, the creek, and the early left stuff makes the hole. Yes it's a tight hole, I think it's great that it's the hole to enter the woods with, as it's sort of intimidating/daunting.

Now that I have some straight to slightly flippy discs, I am not afraid to throw that hole. 17 seems to me to have more lack of a route to the basket, but I wouldn't cut much, since all the trees are massive.

Did the tee on hole 7 get fixed (as I tweezer the rock and glass shards from my palms)
