Pony up another buck.
I don't think you're going to find one any cheaper than that.
Successfully use it three times and it's more than paid for itself anyway.

They work if there's no mucky algae on the bottom of the body of water you're fishing in, or if the disc is visible. I've even fished a couple disc floating on the top of the water. If you're careful you can toss it up into trees to knock discs down. Mine has more then paid for itself. Every golfer should own one.

These things are worth EVERY penny. No questions asked. It's fun to take a six pack (where legal), and just 'fish' with one in a decent lake where there aren't visible scavengers. I've pulled over a dozen discs out of a lake after a tourney. Returned all whose owner I could ID, and most people will toss a buck or two (or a disc, if they cherished the one you're returning), for the gesture.

Ours has paid for itself many times over. You DO become very popular at tournaments. People love to give you a frosty beverage when you fish out their disc. ;)
Oh... be sure to hang on to the string. :D

I attach the disc diver to either some fixed thing (such as a post or tree), or to my disc bag.

You'd think that was a no-brainer, wouldn't you? /msgboard/images/graemlins/smirk.gif
Here's the story.... My husband is fishing some discs out of a lake after an event. A friend comes over and asks to try out the retriever. He tosses out the retriever and then the strings slips silently from his hand. It hangs majestically in the air for just a second, than ker-plunks in the lake, never to be seen again.... :(
The new retriever is going to get a small carabiner tied to the end of the string. :D

This is a must have if you got water on your course. It's funny that the guy that makes them doesn't even play disc golf. If you buy them in bulk they are cheaper plus they're cheaper here because we get them firsthand.
Also don't try to step on it and throw, they have a tendency to slide out from under your foot and then you are swimming for both.

As these people have testified, they do work very well, but be sure to hold onto the end of the string (or attach it to something.) I put a loop on the end of mine that I put around my wrist. That worked well until I briefly let someone else borrow it, then tossed it out again, forgetting it was no longer on my wrist.
I haven't yet used my second one yet....
As the previous poster said, they work very well if you can see the disc, but it's a bit of a crap-shoot if you can't. I still pulled about 10 discs out of a pond by fishing blind after my last tournament in Willits, CA... until the aforementioned lapse.

You can make one out of a couple clothes hangers, or a wielder can spot wield small metal bars to make one in less then 15 mins., but give the creator credit and buy one for $30 to $32 shipped and 3-4 discs later it pays for itself as mentioned before. I been thinking about making a larger one like 5 feet across and putting a net behind it. Think of the discs you'd be able to fish out of a lake blind with that.

Check out Wal-Mart (or most golf shops) for their extendable golf ball retriever. They've got the short 9ft. kind that fits in your bag, or the longer 15ft. one. Just cut off the round piece of plastic on the end and screw in a small cup hook (or rig up another kind of hook). $12.00 and they last a long time. Also good for helping as a walking stick during the later rounds of the day ;).

I have been using clothes hangers for over 10 years. I use a fishing pole with 30 pound test line, and can get out about 100'.
This is kinda on the same subject, so not a total drift, but a friend of mine told me about a guy that uses a "Fat Max" 30' tape measurer to get discs out of trees, and even out of water, if you can see it. It easily fits in your bag, but I have to admit, it is heavy. It is expensive too, at about $30.00 if I remember correctly, but I have had one for most of this season, and it really beats getting your chair or another disc stuck up in a tree! Of course if your disc is higher than the tape will reach, forget it. But this thing is so wide, it will get up there quite a ways before it wants to fold and fall! Then just a light tap will usually free the disc! Some golfers will give me a buck or two for the help on a really thick pine tree! Works great on those floating discs for sure!
Just an idea. I have used the golden retriever too, and it works great!

J Dobbins made one out of some coat hangers, duct tape and a reel of string. It basically has 4 hooks, 2 on each end. and it fishes out discs quite well.
I personally use the Golden Retirever and I can vouch that you become everyones friend when your out playing by water.Only thing is is that you need to oil it every once in a while cause of useage your gonna get out of it. :D

I picked up one of these as well (from Sports Authority) and just cut 1/4 of the round plastic thing off with a hack saw. It makes a great hook for discs and can still be used to retrieve golf balls.
It's great for getting discs out of trees because if you can't reach the disc, you can usually use it to shake the branch on which the disc rests.
