Do runner up's get anything? Or will it be just the pride that you had a shot at getting your artwork on a disc?

You know, a contest that would really get people excited is having the general public design a disc, and the top 3, 5 or 10 designs get molded, sent out for testing, and then the winner will have their design become a full line disc. Just a thought for future reference as a marketing tool.

Back in my days of plastic tooling dies you'd be talking likely from $20k to $100k for a die to be built...it ain't cheap!

I'm sure there are ways to do prototypes but new dies are going to be expensive to design, tool, and do a run.

I am pretty sure the cost is still in that range! :)

Building molds for a new disc is pretty expensive. However, the setup for a hotstamp is not nearly so.

I work with CNC lathes, have access to cnc mills, and use to program EDM's with Pro E Wildfire. My employer scraps metal way larger then discs. PM me if you have any blue prints you might want to test. I could probably make the metal proto's. Does your process consist of taking metal proto's, making a cast around them, pouring a plaster into the cast, tweaking the plaster proto, casting a plastic molder around the cast, then molding throw testing discs? P.S. I'm a machinist from a family of machinists looking for a better job.

P.S.S. I've recieved awards for my 2d art also, but read this post too late. Hopefully I'll get in the next contest. You have any idea what the next design will be?

Scratch that. I checked and we don't have any jawed chucks for our cnc lathes. We only run motor shafts in the cnc lathes with center pins onboth DE and ODE, but we do have 3 and 4 jawed chucks on the manuals. That would be a lot rougher finish though.

looks like I'm too late? I might try to put something together tonight and submit it anyway, but will take a couple hours to make anything worthwhile at least.

I would say its more likely that they are just milling aluminum mold inserts for a MUD-type setup. Cheap mold tool, but wont last long or take abuse. Good for protos.

I was looking into the mud system for our next mold base, not sure yet.
We use S-7 tool steel for our inserts, heat treat them and turn the diameters back down.
Its a bit more expensive and time consuming but well worth it once your into production and not cutting on the tool.

Id would say using this grade of steel could pump out endless parts, ( in the millions) since there is no real metal to metal contact to wear the mold out. We do have to re-cut vents after about 50,000 parts if we have been clamping the mold up tight!

so who won the hotstamp design contest?

gdstour
Jun 25 2007, 03:14 AM
I have about 7 pieces of art that I would like voted on but I am not sure how to add them so they all look the same.
Michael has posted the last 3 contests for me so I guess I'm waiting on him.
the voting is only going to last one day!

Number 1 looks exactly like the logo from the old pc game Diablo by Blizzard Entertainment...

I wonder how the hot stamping will wind up turning out based on what appears to be the winner - #7. Since the "DT" part is more of a grayscale than a straight black, that effect will probably not transfer to the hotstamp.

And BJones, you're right, at least the text portion of #1 did snag that straight from the game Diablo..

But voting is over now anyway. Congrats to the winner, whoever you are :) I have 30 of these discs coming to me, hope they go over well!
