Hi all,
Please answer the following questions. These are directly in regard to the Sunday Devotional and the continued evolvement of Disc Golf in the Greater Pittsburgh Area.

So what do you guys think about having a 2 round tournament on July 1st? We can have a big cookout in the middle of it and advertise a little to try and raise some more money for the PFDO. Maybe we can even get a food sponsor, maybe even Giant Eagle or Supe Walmart.
Let me know what you think. Jerry, would Marie be interested in possibly cooking with my wife for a Bake sale or something for that day?

I don't live in the Pittsburgh area but have played in a few Sunday Devotionals; obviously, consider my vote accordingly.
I voted for a traveling tournament - I see no reason why Sunday Devotionals should be held at Knob Hill only. Especially if Knob Hill is in the extremely wet condition as it is known to be at certain times of year.
However, I voted to hold them at the newest and best courses that Pittsburgh has to offer: Deer Lakes, Moraine State Park and Knob Hill.
While Monroeville, Philips Park, and Schenley are excellent beginners courses I don't think they are as suited for tournament play. I would likely not travel out to Pittsburgh to play a Sunday Devotional at Monroeville, Philips Park, or Schenley.

So it currently looks like there are more votes for having a traveling Sunday Devotional, but only to the top courses. Is this statement correct?

I'm not sure how you are counting the votes in this poll... /msgboard/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

Jerry, I Know I Know, but there is really a method to my madness. You see, every vote that you make, I simply count that as 1/2 a vote. You see, I have to make up for the advantage that you have over me on the course some where.

I thought maybe you had conducted a recount....and included the hanging chads! :)

Actualy Jerry, if you look at the poll, 10 people voted for some type of traveling sunday devotional vs 6 people voting for a Knob Hill ONLY Sunday Devotional.

This is probably a stupid question. But does the PFDS have stated goals for the monthly/weekly leagues? What I mean is, are they meant to attract new disc golfers, increase the playing level of existing golfers, to promote local courses, hang out with buddies, and/or if so, which are the highest priorites, versus lowest priorities.
I answered the poll with the last option but mostly because I'd like to see more opportunities for new faces to meet and play with some of the more experienced players. Presumably.
The PFDS has two monthly leagues (Moraine and Deer Lakes), two weekly leagues (Schenley and Knob), and a third weekly doubles league at Knob. It also looks like Indiana is starting up a monthly league at the College Lodge (awesome!).
If I had to look at the picture, I would say that the organized leagues are starting to weigh heavier towards the competitive end. Which is ok. I wonder if there isn't more demand for recreational end entry opportunities into the sport/activity/whatever. And I'm not saying that Knob has to be that.
I'm kind of curious what folks ultimate goals are? I guess I picture a couple of weekly handicap leagues like Schenley for developing players, four monthly leagues that highlight the courses and raise the competition level, with a half-dozen pro/am tournaments per year.
Not that anyone asked me. Feel free to ignore or chastise away. I'm a total strategic planning nerd, fyi.

Hi Jim,
You have some valid points and some questionable points. What it all boils down to is manpower. The PFDS does not have enough volunteers near all of the Pittsburgh courses who are willing to run leagues. With that said, you can go to any of the league websites (Sunday Devotional and Wednseday Night League) and see the goals. Both of these leagues are handicap leagues that run for a set period through out the year. The Tuesday Night Doubles league does not have a website but its goals are the same. All of these leagues strive to bring in more players while at the same time maintaining a competitive spirit for the existing players. The Monthly leagues are the same. All of the Pittsburgh leagues and monthly events have separate divisions for beginners, Ams and Pro's to compete for this very reason. I don't think anyone would disagree with you that we would like to see new faces out on a consistent basis.
With that said, my personal opinion is to only have the devotional at Knob Hill. I think it would be harder to bring in new faces if you had to travel around to a different course each week on a sunday. But then again it has worked in Buffalo for their doubles league. They are said to have to turn people away once they reach 72 players on a consistent basis. Pittsburgh just does not pull those kind of numbers. But if you want to start up a league, let us know, I'm sure we'll show up.

I think the manpower thing is easy to understand. And I think that what you say makes sense. I was just sort of thinking aloud I guess. And I certainly wasn't intend any criticsm. I think the leagues are great and are all well run. And they have played a big part in my getting out and becoming a better player than I was. Keep up the good work!

Hey Libby, what's going on with the stats for Sunday?? I have won way more than $4. I'm thinking probably closer to $40 or $50. And I have played 6 - 8 sundays not 4??? HMMMM. We need an update. I know that I have finished 1st or 2nd in every week that I have come except 1. Any chance of getting an updated points, money, handicap posted?? I need to see how many more events I need to play.
Also.....how many weeks are used in the final calculations?

As for a travelling league, I think it would be hard for people to remember what course is being used at what week? I think keeping it at Knob Hill as it has always been is our best bet. Heck, it's the only time I ever play Knob anymore :( Kinda hard to believe, figuring I have played over 3000 rounds of golf there in the last 14 years.

Did you remember to count all the secret league rounds? :D

Chris,
Just a little busy at work. I will have the stats updated. I am most likely removing the money standings though (just as a heads up) because it has no impact on the league results for the championship.
