This new course will be about 30 - 45 minutes from indiana. I will try to round up some IDLA members to help out. I know Michael Dropcho loves working on courses, after putting so much effort into The Lodge. haha. I say there is about a 95% chance that i will be willing to help out anyway that i can.

I'm excited to see Fly18 finally make it to the East Coast, but that place is in the middle of nowhere, Reese. It's 50+ miles and more than an hour from all the golfers in Pittsburgh, and as Kurt indicated, 35+ miles and about a 45 minute drive on local roads from Indiana, PA where there is a strong local group. It's not really located "on a major freeway." From Pittsburgh you can get there via the PA Turnpike and exit at Donegal and come up Rt. 711, or you can take Rt. 30 all the way through Greensburg which is slow and annoying.

You'll surely get some golfers out on weekends to check the place out, but you won't have much of a local club in Ligonier for support or to provide weekday traffic. At least not at first.

I make trips every other month or so out to Da Burgh to play disc golf, go to concerts or Penguins / Steelers games, and drink microbrew, so I'll likely stop by myself soon to give it an "official" review.

Fly18 courses need a good location and strong player base in order to succeed. Reese knows this - in the past, Fly18 courses in poor locations or without a strong local player base have not fared as well. No matter what, if Reese puts out a good product, he'll get a glowing review from me and I'll do everything in my power to pump up the course. We know each other well enough for that.

I was told by a guy that I know who has been driving past this wooded ball golf course for years thinking that it would be a perfect spot for a disc golf course that his jaw was on the floor when he saw that a disc golf course was coming here. If Reese takes full advantage of this awesome opportunity, this could truly be a remarkable disc golf course.

Not true ,my most popular courses are, no where disc golf is within 1 hr.Emerald Isle is a perfect example, in a black hole 1 hr north of morley and 50 min south from Huntington beach. It is not bad being a monopoly...Edgebrook in chicago ,has the same results, no disc golf within 45 min it is my #2 course as far as rounds. This course is across from a huge water park and has a lot of potential for new players.I will have a large turnover because they do not live in that town .I have had to postpone my trip for a week or 2 due to a sholder injury that wont go away for 3 weeks...Fly 18 is for all levels of play ...Seeing a family of 4 on my course brings me more satisfaction than a couple of pros.I have been doing some work in LA lake charles they have no disc golf at all...I look forward to all the players comments with the new addition installed... ;)

Hope your shoulder heals soon, Reese.

Can we assume that the Ligonier course will now be installed sometime around the 1st of July?

Who are the "Angles"? And you must be drawing blanks, because I could have sworn I said "Go Red Sox" which literally means they "ARE" the best and will always be "THE" best. But I may route for your "Angles" when they play the yanks lol.

PS: Chrissy the hippy (AKA jesus pronounced hey-zus) placed all your little angles down here for Friz to munch on. :p

Hey Reese,

I was just told today that there is a 9-hole course on the campus of St. Vincent's College in nearby Latrobe, PA. It's reportedly not much of a course but at least there could be SOME locals who regularly play disc golf. At least while school is in session anyway.

Awesome news, Reese! Glad to hear you are feeling better. You will absolutely love Moraine and Knob Hill. The woods holes might get ya some, but you'll be able to crush on the open holes. There are not many Pro Masters in the region who can throw over 500 feet like you can.

J Gary and Michael Dropcho are planning to play the new Fly 18 disc golf course at Timberlink this Wednesday evening. I think there will be some ball-golfers possibly joining in on the round as well. I hope to make it out there if my work schedule will allow it. I can't wait to rent a golf cart and play some disc golf on western PA's newest disc golf course! :)

Played this course on Sunday morning (it rained lightly and intermittently). I really enjoyed holes 13-16. Here's a picture of my friend putting on 14 (glad the creek is dry).

Alanna, Dan Piper, and I met up with the Dropcho Brothers and Jerry G. Wednesday night to play Timberlink. I got to say that we had a blast. This course is definitly worth the drive and green fees. I'd have to agree the best holes are 13,14,15,& 16. They are beautiful!!! Those holes alone are worth the price. We did rent a cart just for the time factor but this course is an easy walking course unlike The Lodge. We played the Pro Tees and found them to be a nice challenge, not to easy not to hard. Having the putting greens OB definitly makes playing more strategic. I'm proud to say that i didn't land on any OB greens or sandtraps but, I still played like a dog.

One suggestion to all players who plan to play this course...HIT THE CHAINS. The baskets take some getting use to. I had a putt hit the rim of the basket and with no nubs to stop it, the disc landed twice as far away than what i was in the first place.

Overall...I think all PFDS members should make the trip. It's worth it. Plus, bring a 6 pack - better yet a 12 pack.

Just talked to my buddy who drove out on Monday to play the course and he wasn't too happy. For starters, the woman at the desk knew nothing about the course. She knew enough to take his money but couldn't answer a single question about the course or even point him in the direction of the first tee. He reported that there were no teepads - just an unnumbered green or orange circle on a tree with perhaps an unnumbered wooden block on the ground to denote a tee area. The baskets were labeled but only with a small number that couldn't be seen until you were very close to the target, and often times the number was so faded you couldn't read it unless you were right on top of it. Apparently he played from 12's tee to 17's basket because he was so confused about the layout. I guess he also got hold of a map at some point, but reported that this was of very little help and the transition from hole 9 to hole 10 on the map was thoroughly confusing.

For those who have yet to play the course, holes 1 and 10 begin on opposite sides of the club house. There are three sets of natural tees to play from....the ball golf "box" tees (white), amateur disc golf tees (orange) and pro disc golf tees (green).

I can't comment about the woman in the clubhouse, but I can agree that a better map is needed for the course (seen above). Timberlink golf course didn't have much of a map to begin with and Reese simply made modifications to their existing map. The tees for holes 11 and 12 are confusing and after J Gary and I conveyed that information to Reese, I believe he is planning to relocate the tees for those two holes. That would be the perfect opportunity to create a more detailed map of the course.

When we played Timberlink last week, we mentioned to course owner, Barney, the need to number the tee blocks and he said that was already in the plans. We forgot to mention anything about the numbers on the baskets. The numbering was small, "mailbox-size" numerals which were applied to a small piece of wood and then hung from the side of the basket. As stated previously, the numerals are too small and faded to see from the tee or fairway.

Aside from that, our group had a good time playing the course last week. It sure is a treat to ride in a cart versus walking the course! The back nine has the best holes overall. Not only is the back nine more challenging, it's much more beautiful. Being that the course is across the street from Idlewild Park (a family fun center/amuzement park), Timberlink was designed with the recreational player in mind. We're hoping to see lots of "families of four" stopping by Timberlink for a round of disc golf after spending the day at Idlewild Park! Needless to say, this pay-per-play course should provide great public exposure to the sport of disc golf.

Look for announcements regarding an upcoming event or two this late summer or fall. It's quite possible we will plan a "Day/Glow" tournament during October....one round in the afternoon followed by a glow-in-the-dark round!

I am in the process of laying out the map better. This course had no scorecard at all to work with when I arrived. This course would not even come up on google map. This is a family run business, not a lot of employees, some of the time Barney the will leave a sign in the door go play take a cart catch me later. They are very honest. The block will be # this week. Most of the time I never put a # on the basket these signs came from texas. The baskets will have a directional tape on the top rim to direct them to the next tee.Jeff if you and friend come back to play I would be happy to comp your friend to see all the improvements.I have had lots of first time players renting discs.Enjoy the summer, cold beers, and carts, cant be to bad. ;)
