Many thanks to the players that turned out to play the innagural Commando Mini at Spring Valley last weekend!!!

The playing conditions were great! Although there were a few puddles out there which prevented throwing rollers on most holes, the power-9 ones could still be rolled. I even managed to keep my feet dry until the 15th hole...I probably could've walked around and stayed dry, but I splashed through the puddles anyway.

Only saw 2 mosquitos during the whole round! Wow!

Pass the word - if you are in town for the weekend, then the Commando Mini is a great place to grab a little high quality disc golf. Their Pro Shop at SV is very impressive and as large as Circle-R's shop! The staff of SV have been very welcoming to disc golfers and it is a pleasure to work with someone that wants to have our business versus Oak Meadow where they DON'T want our business.

Click here for Google Map. (http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&q=Spring+Valley+Golf+Course,+Texas& ie=UTF8&ll=30.117216,-95.478745&spn=0.392598,0.496445&z=11&om=1)

Their phone number is: (281) 351-8628
Call that number to find out of if the course will be open in case there is heavy, recent rain. They open at 7:00 am so there's a good chance that if they're open, they'll be answering that phone! If Spring Valley is open, then you can pretty much bet that I'll be there!

Lots of folks just figured out that the Commando started back up last weekend, so it's sounding like a stronger turn-out for this weekend. Weather is looking pretty good so far too. :D Keep your fingers crossed.

Can't wait to see what layout Mike will set up for us this weekend!

Wow! We had 19 players show up for the Commando Mini this morning!!! A perfect morning for some disc golf too!

I'm keeping results posted up on the HFDS website.

You can view the results, by clicking on this! (http://www.hfds.org/html/commando.html)

Many thanks go out to all of the players supporting Texas States by playing in this mini! We had another 4-5 first timers out there this week, and all of them were raving about how good (and tough) they thought this course was!

I'm telling you folks, if you haven't played at Spring Valley yet, then you really owe it to yourself to come on out next Sunday morning for some of the best competitive disc golf in the city!

The Commando Mini will be running this Sunday again!

Be advised that I'm going to be out for three weekends in a row at the end of July. If I can find someone willing to run this benefit for Texas States then it will continue running, otherwise it'll only be running 2 weekends in July.

Anybody?

Many thanks go out to Cecil Larkin for volunteering to take over the running of the Commando Mini at Spring Valley for a few weeks for me!!!

I'll be there this Sunday, but then I'll be out for 3 weekends. Cecil handled payout last weekend quicker than I usually do it! I'm sure the mini will be in good hands! :D

Sign-up this weekend will be between 8:30 and 9:00 am. The cost is still just $10 with a $1 donation to Texas States.

Come on out and play the best course in Houston!

For any out-of-towners: The Commando will be running this morning. Be there before 10:00 am. Ace Pot is at $66. Total raised for Texas States so far is $256 - one buck at a time! In addition, there have been numerous folks that have donated their winnings back to the States fund as well...

As a reminder, if anyone is in from out of town this weekend to play at Quail Valley, then you might want to come and check out the Commando Mini at Spring Valley on Sunday morning. We will be taking sign-ups from about 9:45 until 10:00 am on Sunday morning. The cost is $10 and includes green fees, Ace Pot and mulligan. It all benefits Texas States.

The cost of the South Battalion version of the Commando is $10 with $1 from each player going to Texas States.

This is a great opportunity for folks to come out and check out the Links course which will be used for Texas States this year. Permanent sleeves and baskets have been installed on the Links course (or will be on Saturday morning.)

See ya on Sunday morning! I'm really encouraged by all of the buzz with folks saying they're coming out this Sunday...or next.

REMINDER ABOUT DRESS CODE: Neal has asked me to remind everyone about the QVCC dress code: Must wear a collared shirt, and no cut-offs or "raggy" clothes. (As a personal favor to me - please don't put me (or Neal) in a position where we have to tell someone that they can't play because of the dress code. We want everyone to support Texas States and QVCC.)

Feb 24 2008, 07:18 PM
Many thanks to the 15 players that turned out for today's opening of the South Battalion Commando Mini!

We had 9 in Open, 3 Int, 3 Rec.

I'm guessing that there were somewhere in the neighborhood of 20 discs lost out there today! :D (I had 2 the first round and 4 the second round! :( :( :( )

The new course is VERY challenging. The name of the game out there is course management - lay up and take an easy par upshot or risk the water hazards for a deuce!

Travis Greenway shot a 52 to take the Open division today! Nice shooting Travis! :D

If you get there early enough, you can rent a cart for the round for $10. I highly advise it. The second round on a card of 6 played almost twice as fast as the first round went!

Mar 20 2008, 06:53 PM

If anyone is planning on playing in it this Sunday, please let me know. I'm going to be there, and I have a confirmation that at least 1 other guy is going to be there! :D

9:00am is the starting time. Please plan on getting there about 10 minutes early if you want to rent a golf cart. I usually park at the QVCC Pro Shop, rent a cart and then drive the cart over to the course.

Bit by bit, and dollar by dollar, I'm pleased to announce that thanks to everyone that has supported the Commando Mini over the last year have allowed it to contribute $1,000 to the 2008 Texas State Disc Golf Championship (April 5-6th) !!!

I will continue to run the Commando Mini at both locations for the coming year thanks to the other volunteers that have stepped up to keep the torch alive! Matt Stillwagon has been backing me up at North Battalion of Spring Valley and Neal Dambra/Eric Jubin have agreed to take over running the South Battalion at Quail Valley! (Holy smokes!!! This is effective as of: April 20th, 2008.

BTW - I used the distance listed on the scorecard for #17, but I think the course layout changed since the cards were originally printed...that or maybe the repeated rains and drying out have shrunk the fairway on it. :D

Alex - shame on you!

The Commando Mini has run every Sunday except for the two Sundays surrounding Worlds this year!

I usually post up the most current info on the HFDS.org message board. The only thing that has changed about it lately is that the start time is back to 10:00 am on Sunday mornings!

The proceeds from these Minis go to Texas States - so it is a worthy "cause"!!! :D

Holy smokes!!! I can't believe it's been almost 4 months since I've posted here!

I want to inform any of our out-of-town PDGA members, that they are always welcomed and encouraged to come play a single-round mini on Sundays if they find themselves in Houston over a weekend. It costs only $10 and it covers your green fees for the day. We feature one of the largest Open field of players at anything short of Texas States! We are averaging about 20-25 players each week. Last week we had 12 Open players of a total field of 22, and the week before, there were 16 Open players!

Spring Valley is the BEST disc golf course in Houston and open to the public!

It runs every at 10:00 am every Sunday morning! It is a fund-raiser for Texas States.

The Commando Mini
at
Spring Valley
every Sunday morning at 10:00am

Benefits Texas States!!!

Cost is only $10 (includes green fees, Ace Pot and Mulligan)

To date:
Total number of players: 437
Amount raised in $1 fee: $437
Amount raised via Mulligans: $287 ($150 used for BS tourney at Spring Valley in Sept.)
Total Texas States contribution: $724

We still have 7 weeks of Commando Mini play left before States...and I think with a few more high turn-out weeks we might be able to match last year's sponsorship level of $1,000!

Thank you Houston area players!!!

With your support and the generous donations of prize winnings and some outright cash contributions, the players of the Commando Mini were able to write a check for $1,000 to Texas States last night! We made it!!!

Yesterday, Thomas Burks donated $15 of his prize winnings, Mr Ed donated his $10, Steve Dufrane donated $5 of his winnings, and Mr. Matt Stevens pulled out a $20 from his pocket and donated their winnings to the Texas States fund in an effort to see us reach the $1,000 mark.

You guys rock!!!

The Commando Mini 4th season is going to begin this Sunday, April 12th!

Wasn't Texas States a great experience? Come on out and help us kick off the start of our 4th season working toward the 2010 edition of Texas State!

Hope to see everyone out there this Sunday!

Dang! I never remember to promote The Commando Mini on the PDGA message board regularly.

If you are visiting Houston over the weekend, then I highly encourgage that you chase down the Sunday morning Commando Mini at Spring Valley Disc Golf Course on the northside.

We are averaging between 15 and 25 players every weekend and are seeing the largest field of Open players than anything else in town. And here's the bonus: It's played on the best (and shadiest) course in the county!!!

It starts at 10:00 am every Sunday and costs just $10 including green fees, ace pot and mulligan. All cash payout.

8/9/2009 <-- Second weekend of the month is DOUBLES!!! (random card draw)
8/16/2009 <-- Third weekend of the month is singles
8/23/2009 <-- Fourth weekend of the month is singles
8/30/2009 <-- Fifth weekend of the month is singles

Entry fees for every week is still $10 and includes Ace Pot and Mulligan.

Please support The Commando Mini and our efforts to support Texas States as well as the Spring Valley Spectacular!!!

At the suggestion of a few of our players, we've begun running a random, card, draw-doubles on the second Sunday of every month.

We've been playing best shot doubles every round so far - but we may experiment around with other formats in the future.

Come on out to the Commando Mini Doubles on the second Sunday of every month!

Be there before 10:00 am and you'll be in!

This is the final weekend before the big B-tier tournament at Spring Valley.

I encourage everyone that is planning on playing in the Spring Valley Spectacular to come on out and log a practice round at the Commando Mini!

It ain't quite a tournament, but we've been averaging between 20-30 players per week lately, and your attendance is sure to push it to new record levels.

The cost is still just $10 - which includes your green fees for the day, a buck for Texas States, Ace Pot entry and a mulligan.

For those that might be wondering about the details....this is how it works: I take signups at just before 10:00 am. I will make out cards based on your division and I try to assign you to a card of folks in your division. I'll figure out starting hole assignments depending on how many cards we have - last weekend it was 8 cards so we run a shotgun start across about 6-7 different holes. I give everyone about 15 minutes to get to their starting holes before I signal 2 minute warning and then a start.

The ponds and wet areas back on the Finesse course will be strung for the tournament and Commando Mini players tomorrow will be playing with the strung OB as OB to simulate the tournament conditions.

Please plan on arriving just before 10:00 am.

The Commando Mini runs a random-card draw doubles round on the second Sunday of each month. With Texas States only being a couple of weeks away, this will be one of the last two weeks you'll have to help us raise money for Texas States.

We are also planning on holding a disc exchange this weekend. Bring one new, premium plastic disc to trade with another player. We'll be running it sort-of like a white elephant gift exchange thing.

The Ace Pot stands at $119.

I think that I may have some Texas States stamped Rocs available for sale at the Commando too! All proceeds will be going to Texas States.

Hope to see you out there this weekend for a little doubles action!

bump this puppy up!

The Commando has lots of action happening this weekend with only two weeks left before States. I'm hoping that with a good showing, we might be able to push the Commando sponsorship up enough to get the TxStates added cash up to the $6,000 mark! Grab your friends and bring an extra disc for the exchange and show up this Sunday for some Commando Doubles!

Hope to see ya there!

Tomorrow 3/21/2010 will be the last Commando Mini before Texas States next weekend.

I will have the Texas States tournament-stamped Rocs for sale at the Commando tomorrow. The Commando is the only place where you'll be able to score one!!!

I can't thank everyone enough for your continued support of the Commando Mini and its goal to raise money for Texas States. Your participation this year has allowed the Commando to provide in the neighborhood of $1,700 to the States fund!!!

After this weekend, we'll immediately start on the 4th year of operation of the Commando as we start raising money for the 2011 edition.

Come on out and test your mettle on the best course in Houston on Sunday mornings at 10:00 am.

The Commando Mini will begin running for another season next weekend.

I am not so sure that Commando will be used as a fundraiser for Texas States however.

It will be used to raise tournament sponsorship funds of some kind, but given the low level of appreciation by this year's and last year's Texas States organization, it will be changing.

The Commando Mini will be played at the McDade Park course in Conroe tomorrow, July 4th.

Water is high at Spring Valley so we're going to move it to McDade. We will post a sign up at Spring Valley in the morning and we'll be moving back the start time to 10:30 am to give folks a chance to drive up to McDade from Spring Valley.

Hope to see ya out there in the morning.

Back by popular demand:

The Commando Mini Disc Exchange - Dec 19th, 2010
(in time for the holidays!)

Here is how it'll work:
For those are interested, (it is completely optional, but we'd love to have your participation) please bring an un-wrapped, new, premium disc and you'll be eligible to participate in our disc exchange. We'll run the exchange in white elephant style: all the discs will go on display in a jumble on the table, and the first person takes his/her choice, second person has the option of taking the first person's choice or taking another off the table, if a person gets a disc taken from them, then they can pick from another person (except the one that took theirs) or draw another off the table. I think we ought to stipulate that once you've had a disc taken from you, you're "safe" until another new name gets called from the list. The first person will have the "option" to take someone else's disc or keep what he/she has as the final turn.

As I've done in years past, I'll dig down deep in my collection box and see if I can't come up with something "special" for this year's disc exchange. Hmmm...I wonder...

But for this week, December 12th, 2010:

For this week however, remember that because it is the second weekend of the month, it'll be Commando Doubles week!!! No need to bring your own partner, we'll let random mayhem select one for you with a deck of cards!!!

It's going to be chilly in the morning with winds in the 16 mph range from the North. Please dress warmly in some layers that you can peel off or open up as you get warmer.

Hope to see all you out there in the morning for some of the best doubles action in town!

I just wanted to get a shout out to Dave Hemmeline of The Woodlands for setting a new course record on Spring Valley's Finesse-18 course last weekend.

Dave scored a 40 last weekend during the Commando Mini. Andi Young was onsite in the Pro Shop after the round was finished and confirmed that this appears to be a new course record, beating Alex Hughes' record of 41 from last year.

I looked over Dave's card, and he was -8 after the first nine holes!!! He scored 15 birdies with his only bogey on the very difficult #18.

Congratulations Dave!

Just a reminder to everyone that Houston's longest running weekly mini is now in its 5th year of operation raising money for Texas State DGC.

It still runs every Sunday morning at 10:00 am at the Spring Valley Disc Golf course.

The cost is still just $10 and includes your green fees, Ace Pot and Mulligan with a cash payout following the round.

I hope to see you out there on Sunday mornings.

Dang! It's been a while since I updated this PDGA thread about the Commando Mini...

When: We still play every Sunday morning at 9:00 am.
Where: TC Jester disc golf course (all 21-holes from the White tees)
Cost: $10 for entry fee optionally: $1 Ace Pot and up to 5 $1 mulligans can be purchased
Payout: All cash payout immediately after the round ends.

The mulligan fund goes to HFDS for the course improvement fund at TC Jester. We are paying HFDS for the $1,500 worth of baskets used to expand the course, and once the baskets are paid for, we will then be using the money to fund concrete tee boxes.

We welcome and appreciate all players who participate in Houston's longest running mini tournament - now in its sixth year!!!

Find us near the practice basket just before 9am.
