My son and I are currently planning Tour de Rizbee 2007 - our fourth annual father/son disc golf road trip. This year we will travel to Milwaukee for Am Worlds from San Diego, and back again, between July 15th and August 4th. On these trips we play as much disc golf as possible and try to meet lots of local players along the way. We need your help with two things:
1) Please post your recommendations of courses between San Diego and Milwaukee that we should not miss. Our route is still open, but right now we need recommendations for courses to play in the following states: Colorado, Iowa, Illinois, Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Utah, Wisconsin and Wyoming. What should we make sure not to miss?
2) One goal of our trip is to do some disc golf outreach. We would like to make stops along the way to introduce kids to disc golf. If you live along our route and know of a summer day camp, scout troop, church youth group, etc. that would like to join us in a 9-hole round of golf, please contact me at rizbee@teamrizbee.com. We will be travelling with EDGE discs that the kids can use and EDGE curriculum materials to distrbute to teachers or couselors. We will also be raising funds this summer to fund putting EDGE in our local schools. Let's get kids off the couch and onto the course!!
Also, if you are on our route and will be driving to Am Worlds feel free to contact us about caravaning. The more the merrier! Our goal is to play 60 courses and 1,000 holes along the way, so bring extra arms!

Might I suggest one (or more) of the 5 awesome courses in the St. Louis
area?? We are hosting the Mid-Nationals in September...would give you a
nice look at the courses being used for it. Check out
http://www.stldiscgolf.com/MessageBoard.asp for info on courses
and tourneys while you are coming through.

PS Love the idea of Tour de Rizbee. Awesome.

Thanks for the link to the info, Dan. St. Louis is a strong possiblity for the return loop of the trip! I know you guys are well organized, so I hope we can set up some escorts to give us local knowledge while we play! I'll be in touch.

KC has some good courses...Waterworks is just awesome.
Columbia Missouri has two 18 hole courses in the same park (Albert Oakland) and another 18 holes at Indian Hills (haven't play that one.)
Tulsa has a couple of good ones, Red Hawk and Black hawk (again, two 18s in the same park.)
St. Louis is well worth the drive. .. just stop here..LOL.

Emporia Kansas has some good courses as does Des moines (actually great courses). Sipapu in NM is supposed to be awesome but I have never been there.
Token creek (awesome) and Elver in Madison WI would be good ones to hit as well as Heistand.
Widefield park in Colorado springs is nice also.
Cottonmill in Kearney NE is SCHWEETTT!
Oh and you better play in STL on the way up so we can play a round or two.

May 18 2007, 08:50 AM
It's a little over 5 hours since you'll be on the north side of Milwaukee. If you're making the effort to come this far, it would be a shame to miss them, especially when they're in Worlds shape. You might never head this far north again whereas coming thru say Iowa again would be more likely on a future Tour De Rizbee to Am Worlds in 2008 (Kalamazoo), 2009 (KC), 2010 (OH), 2011 (Rochester). My thought would be to take the northern route thru Dakotas, MN and Highbridge on the way to Milwaukee and hit St. Louis & KC on a south route on your way back. That way, you can zip thru the Highbridge courses before the Pro Worlds crowd gets there. There are enough good courses on the northern route to even go to and from Milwaukee with two northern routes.

Do not miss the courses in Kansas City. KC is hosting Am & Pro Worlds in 2009, so you can get a preview of the courses. Waterworks is the course to play plus Rosedale and Swope.
Do not miss the opportunity to play the awesome courses in Des Moines, IA. They are on I-35. I recommend Walnut Ridge and Ewing Park. You can camp at/near Walnut Ridge and also Big Creek.
There are several courses around Cedar Rapids & Iowa City, IA worth visiting, but I am not sure how on the way they are. Jones Park, Legion Park in CR. Both Sugarbottom & Turkey Creek in Iowa City area have camping nearby. There is also a new Peninsula park in Iowa City that I have not played.
If you go from St. Louis north to Milwaukee, take the time to check out McNaughton & Northwoods in Peoria, IL and Sinnissippi Park in Sterling, IL.

I was also going to advocate for KC so I'll add to the bandwagon. Waterworks is 5th best of almost 190 courses that I've played. I rate it 9.5 out of 10.
Swope. Lowe Score = 8 out of 10. Many down then back up shots over valleys.
WyCo in Bonner Springs is also good. Lowe Score = 7
Rosedale. Lowe Score = 7

Besides WW (gorgeous), Swope (Folf!) and Rosedale (2 courses)......Cliff Drive (technical mix) and Blue Valley (11k'+ loooong) in KC are also worthy of a looksee...and perhaps Cliff Drive will/may have cement tees by then.
Another vote for Emporia, KS...right off I-35...GREAT 2 course park!
Just off I-70 in Western Kansas - Hays, KS has a wonderful course in Frontier Park with a creek coming into play, a variety of holes fo sho! ...bring your wind discs...
Sorry, I didn't look up all your intended dates, but there's a possibility of hitting some tourneys in Kansas via the KDGA OZ Tour - Kansasdiscgolf.com (http://Kansasdiscgolf.com)
In Columbia, MO there's also Indian Hills (quite near the Albert Oakland 2 course DG park and TOUGH) which ate my lunch the first (and currently last) time I played there.
Sounds like you've got another great Tour coming up! A great way for a father/son to hit the road!!

coming from san diego? to utah you can hit vegas, then three hours north, brianhead ski resort in south utah, then 3 more hours north to the next courses off of I-15 in provo (bicentennial and rock canyon) 15 minutes north from provo, art dye park in american fork which is a must play. 40 minutes further north is salt lake city, you can play creekside (in the morning) if its not too crowded, and the other must play course is at solitude ski resort. go furthur north to ogden and the riverdale course is good to play. after that there is a nine hole course in evanston wyo.(western), then a long drive to eastern wyo before you get to another good course to play (cheyenne). laramie wyo has an object course on the campus, where you might be able to hook up with peter shive.....call him.
ive driven to san diego many times from utah and there are long stretches between courses, not like california where there is a course every 30 minutes... :D
utah course ratings as of 05-22-07:
1) solitude
2) art dye
3) creekside park (if its not crowded)
4 )riverdale park
5) bicentennial park
6) rock canyon (guide needed)
7) brian head
theres a couple of other courses in utah but are either nine hole courses or not worth playing, or not on your way to wyoming.

I learned to play DG in Utah. Solitude (near SLC) is my #2 course that I have played (beating LaMirada and Morley). I have not played in Mew Mexico, but I know some very cool people in SLC that can show you around.
In Provo, play bicentennial, then Art Dye.
Creekside is a fun course but does get crowded (nothing like Morley). Don't even bother going to Valley Regional in Taylorsville. Make the effort to go to Solitude :cool:(27 holes, and buy the ski lift pass $5).
I have not played northern Utah, but they have recently put in several courses.

Hi Dave - looking forward to seeing you on Saturday @ the Fling. AJ and I registered for Am Worlds today - because of my surgery last year I didn't play enough to get an invite. And to be honest, I wasn't good enough last year to ean it. I think that may be changing. :D
I want to pick your brain on Utah - looks like we'll hit it either coming or going.

Oh ya, I played that tourney. I really liked the set-up at Sedgley woods (3rd permanent course). The first day was chilly, but sunny. I was tied for second in Intermediate. Then the NorEaster hit and it rained 4" in one day...
My jacket was not waterproof and I was wearing jeans. My hands were so cold I couldn't even hold my putter. I had to turbo-putt. I dropped back to 9th place.
I've got some disc golf friends in SLC, I'll see if they can help you with your EDGE business. :)

Actually, what we are looking for are *local kids* that could be introduced to disc golf. My son and I are traveling to Milwaukee for Am Worlds and we will be playing golf along the way. We thought it would be fun to introduce some kids to the sport along the way, so we have a supply of EDGE discs that the local kids can use as we play. We will also have a lot of EDGE information for the adults, in hopes that they will want to integrate disc golf into their schools, etc.
We'd love to play with some expert or pro local players, but we also want to do the ambassador thing.

If you come through this part of the world, I will try to get some kids rounded up for an EDGE experience. The Parks Dept. has inquired about a Summer Camp type thing and this would be pretty similar (they might even do pictures for next year's Park Guide). I will need several days (or more) to get the word around, but we could do something. Our club would enjoy hosting you and your son (maybe even a place to crash for the night), if you guys decide to pass this way. As far as the course goes, you won't regret stopping to see this anomaly on the Plains ;). You would never expect to see something like this course here as you're driving across Interstate 40, looking at all the flat treeless expanses. But, once you get a mile or two off of the freeway, and get closer to the breaks of the Canadian River, things start looking more and more like Disc Golf utopia.

If you are going to pass through Oklahoma, Tulsa is where I would stop to play. A few hours from Tulsa is a course in Arkansas called Horse Shoe Canyon. They have cabins there to rent, will cook you meals, beside the beauty of 2 disc golf courses right there in the canyon. The courses are nice, scenery nice, you can't go wrong stopping there. Definately one of my top 10 as far as the whole package. If you are considering stopping there, I have some friends in Tulsa and Arkansas that I can hook you up with. Enjoy your journey.

Rizbee,
In an old DGW I read about the Camelot Lodge in Moab UT. It looks really unique, but hard to get to. I don't know if it'd on your route, but you might want to look into it.
Info from my U.S. Course Guide on the course:
For information on courses in Utah go to http://www.teamutahdiscgolf.com/
Moab
The Camelot Lodge (Private)
Length: 6815 ft.
Description: The view from the ranch has got to be one of the most amazing views you could ever experience. I know it's the most spectacular place I've ever been. Having the Colorado River "in the backyard" (300 feet?? away) and soaring red rocks surrounding you for almost 360 degrees, it feels like you're in the bottom of the Grand Canyon.
Directions: Call owners for directions, vehicle restrictions and road conditions. 18.5 mile dirt road through desert and over mountain pass.
Contact: Terry Moore - owner
Website: http://www.camelotlodge.com
Home: (435) 260-1783
Email: camelot@camelotlodge.com
Address: P.O. Box 621, Moab, UT 84532
For pictures see http://www.teamutahdiscgolf.com/photos/Mill_Canyon_04/
You can find my U.S. Course Guide at
DG Resources- New Google Group, http://groups.google.com/group/DGResources
It's by no means complete, and only has info on courses that I've heard about or from states I've been to, but maybe it might help you a little. I've never played in the southwest U.S., though, so my info is pretty sparse in that region.
If you have MS Streets & Trips I've also uploaded a map with lots of courses marked.
Hope this helps!

Looking at the map, I would think that Utah and Colorado would have some very scenic courses with awesome elevation changes. I don't know much about the specifics of courses along I-15 or I-70, though.
I did see that Moab UT isn't too far off of I-70, though.

Thanks, Cameron. Tulsa is a must - I played in the 1985 WDGC there and would like to return to the scene of that crime (my play was criminal...). Good tip on Horseshoe Canyon - please PM with info on who to contact.
Not sure how far south you want to come, but Dallas/FortWorth has become quite a DG mecca. Rockwall (East Dallas) just installed a killer 18 hole championship course designed by Hall of famer John Houck. Cedar Hill (South Dallas) has 36 holes in a nature preserve that has become DGers piece of paradice(Barry Schultz claims the Beaver course is in his top 5 in TX). Travel west across the metroplex on I-20 and hit Veteran's Park(home of 16 year SuperTour) and continue to West Fort Worth for some Almighty Z action (Z-Boaz DG course....7 year running supertour.)
Just wanted you to know in case you thought of traveling I-20 which becomes I-10 further west.

I just downloaded you Streets and Trips map and I'll take a look at it. We use that software while planning the trip and on the road. When I bought the software it came with a GPS antenna, so we hook it up to the laptop while we're driving. Came in handy on last year's TdR. "Mr. Turner" as we call him is a big help.
Rizbee Jr. took a summer school computer applications class last year and started an Excel file database of courses in California. That file has expanded over the past year as we have been planning this trip. It'll be fun for him to compare his work with yours.

DFW is a great draw, but I don't know if we'll have enough time to come that far south. It's always possible, especially if we have weather to the north that we decide to bypass. I'll note your recommendations.
Actually, I expect we will do a Tour one of these years where we fly to Texas, rent a vehicle and make the rounds...no pun intended.

I finished Iowa in the directory tonight.
That makes the total number of courses 732.
Including courses in Arizona, California, Colorado, Iowa, Idaho, Kansas, Massachusetts, Maine, Missouri, Nebraska, New Hampshire, New Mexico, Nevada, New York, Oklahoma, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Utah, Vermont, and Washington.
Next up is Illinois then Wisconsin.
Then I will sleep for a month.

I'm not clear what you mean that you "finished Iowa in the directory". Were just checking the PDGA directory or did you enter all of these courses in a Streets & Trips map?
I assume you've been using the PDGA Google Map Disc Golf Course Directory. http://pdga.com/course/gindex.php

That message was from AJ, or rizbee_jr, my son. he started last year putting together an Excel file with information on all of the courses that we could possibly encounter on our Tours. The file includes longitude and latitude for all of the courses, so we have imported it into Streets and Trips. We snagged a basket graphic from the web to use as the point-of-interest indicator, so our Streets and Trips screen looks a bit like the GoogleMap feature on the PDGA directory.
Many courses in the PDGA on-line directory don't have lat and long listed, so AJ uses the directions on the directory listing to find them using Mapquest (I think) which then gives him lat and long data.
When we travel we use our laptop with a GPS antenna (?) to give us directions to the next course. It's also helpful for finding food and gas (sometimes both at the same place). It definitely makes us more efficient when we're trying to cram in multiple courses in a day.
So...when AJ says he has 732 in the directory, he is referring to his Excel file, which will become our Streets and Trips map, similar to yours. As you can tell from his list of states, we are heavy on the west and the path from San Diego to Milwaukee, although you might be able to tell we've been considering a trip to the northeast!

Collinsville is a bit awkward to navigate. But each hole is a good design I hear.
( I have not play it yet.)
Centralia is a new course. 18 hole championship and 9 hole recreation.
Again, I have not played this one, but hear it is awesome.
Look us up on www.stldiscgolf.com (http://www.stldiscgolf.com) we have a very active message board.
Also check out local events to see if you can play in a club tourney.

I am from Springfield IL but have not yet played the courses there but I know how the parks them selfs look and based on what I have heard I would recommend you play at the course at Lincoln Park! I have been to the course in Morton IL which is by Peoria. To tell the truth every course I have played in this area has been awesome those courses I have played are: Northwood Park (Morton IL) & McNaughton Park (Pekin IL) & Lake Eureka DGC (Eureka IL) I have also heard about Bradley Park (Peoria IL) & Illinois Central College DGC (Peoria IL). I don't think you can go wrong with any course in the area! Good luck you will not regret the courses I mention I promise you!

I'm almost ready to post our full "estimated" itinerary, on this thread and on our web site. We'll also be updating our progress on our web site while we're on the road.
We'd love to have lots of locals to play with on our stops, so feel free to invite more. We'll be collecting signatures on a TdR stamp disc and t-shirts, too!

We are exactly one month from the start of the 2007 Tour de Rizbee!!! This year's Tour is going to be bigger and better than previous years:

To start the trip off right we will be hosting a 1-round kick-off tournament at Emerald Isle on the day we start. The tourney will start early (shotgun start at 7:30am) so we can hit the road and head off to play three more courses that day! Check out the flyer here. (http://www.teamrizbee.com/TdR%20Kickoff.pdf)
Cost is $20 to cover greens fees, a TdR logo disc, raffle prizes and a donation to EDGE (http://www.edgediscgolf.org/). We welcome your participation - if you would like to help out as a sponsor, please PM me.
Details will be forthcoming on a Finish Line Tourney that is currently in the early planning stages. Very similar to the kick-off, except that you can watch us collapse as we hit the end of the road!!

Allen,
We're glad that you and AJ are stopping here to share with us! Our group of women players (West Texas Women Disc Golfers) is gearing up to make your visit here memorable. We're hoping that having them as the official "hostessess" for the day will help them get a little more local exposure, as well as promoting the EDGE program.
Speaking (or typing) of the EDGE program, we have been contacted by the local School District to do another demonstration for their PE instructors. We did one several years ago (2001) and we got some really good interest from the teachers. Then 911 happened and after all of the trouble from that, the Disc Golf movement kind of slowed for the school system. Some of the PE teachers are still trying apparently, so we might have another opportunity to try again. We may be contacting you and/or others for some info to pass out (I think the demo is going to happen soon, before you guys come this way)............................Woah, STOP! **(just thinking off the top of my noggin right now)** How cool would that be if we could set up the demo for the day you guys pass through? Are you interested in working with a large number of PE instructors? I don't know for sure if we can set it up, but I'll try if you're interested.

Thanks for the update, Rob. Last I talked with Terry Moore, the former owner, he was trying to sell the DisCatchers to someone in Moab for more than he paid for them. He told me the "buyers didn't want the liability of the course," but then those were the 3rd buyers I'd heard about.
It's still a bit off the beaten path for Tour de Rizbee, but if you ever get the chance, Allen, I think you'll love the place.

Re: CO courses. I have only played one, but what a course! At over 10K feet, over logging trails. The HOF courses kinda reminded me of it! Leadville, at Colorado Mountain (?) Community College. 18 holes. When I threw my first shot there, the way it kept traveling in the thin air reminded me of the first time I threw an Eagle in 83! Only drawback - Even though I waited until my fifth day at altitude (~8K ft), I still got altitude sickness. But it was worth it!
Again, good seeing you at HOF, and have a safe trip to WI. I know that your route won't go through DFW, but if it does...

For Oklahoma you need to stop by Stillwater and play Boomer Lake Park, then head to Tulsa and be SURE to play the Blackhawk and Redhawk....McClure is another good course. There are many to chose from in OK and really not too many to realy stay away from ....my theory is if you see baskets you should stop and throw at them....yall have fun and be safe.

It's Day 2. So Far we have played:
Emerald Isle - Oceanside, CA - 18
Frontier Park, Tustin, CA - 9
Ford Park, Redlands, CA - 9
Ski Sunrise, Wrightwood, CA - 18 (ran out of light)
Firefighters Park, Kingman, AZ - 9
McPherson Park, Flagstaff, AZ - 5
We had to stop at McP because of lightning. Waiting it out right now at the library, hope to get some more play in today.
The trip has been great so far - we're not too sore or sunburned yet!!
The Kick-off Tournament at EI raised $500+ for EDGE!!!!!!
On the down side, somebody stole our TdR car door magnets. :(
Lightning sucks.
But we're still smiling! :D

I would not play Arcadia Park in Edmond, OK. It usally gets played mainly in the WINTER, after the big FREEZE. There are so many ticks and bugs out there. Look into Mitch Park in Edmond, instead.

Thanks for the bug warning!!
The full wrap-up of Day 1 is available at: http://teamrizbee.com/blog.html

Dude keep up the cool blog. I lived on the west coast for a while and regularly made trips back to my hometwon in Iowa. I've played many of the courses you are playing and enjoy hearing your take on them. Brings back good memories. Farmington is a CRAZY course. Was it windy?
When you are in Iowa you should hit up Jones Park, Thomas Park, or Shaver Park disc golf courses in Cedar Rapids, IA (About 20 mins north of Iowa City). They are all better than Turkey Creek.

Tour the rizbee has picked up another guy.
I joined the tour today. I flew into Chicago today and got picked up by team rizbee. We played two courses today...
Summitt Park - short techincal course anout 10 min from the airport. Allen won that match
We then headed out to Edgemount golf course - Fly 18 course
Long and open lots of rollers and fun. We only got 15 holes in but it was blast. I took that one to get my bag tags back. Even though i left my trusty blue disc in the rough ! (IF you find it call me!)
We just finished eating at Ginos East in downtown Chi town. Now that is Chicago style pizza.
We are on the road as I type this going north. Looking for a place to crash.
Day 7 now in the books!

Here's the group photo of participants at the TdR Kick-Off Tournament, held on July 15th at Emerald Isle Golf Course in Oceanside, CA. This was the first of 60 courses played during this year's Tour de Rizbee: 60 courses, 6,000+ miles, 21 days, 1,005 holes.
Everyone looks to have had a good time, except Chef. What's up with that?

This is a pic from the 4th course we played on the TdR (which was on Day #1): Ski Sunrise in Wrightwood, CA. I believe this is the view you have from the 14th tee if you look out towards the north. In the distance is Edwards Air Force Base, where the space shuttle frequently lands.

The pic isn't the greatest, but it does bring home the point that we finished playing McPherson Park in Flagstaff well after the sun went down, with lighted discs. We tried to hold an EDGE clinic there earlier in the day but were rained (and lightninged) out. We did talk to the day camp kids for a little while about disc golf, show them how to putt and gave them each an EDGE disc. Great course, in the light or the dark.

Don't suppose you have the courses in a google earth format?
KML? KMZ etc?
It would be great to get those posted (as I am sure a lot of folks would.)
At the very least, perhaps a GPS listing?
Awesome pics...can't wait to scroll through em all once you get them posted.

The best I can do right now is that I'm placing them on a map through my flickr site. If you can give me some guidance via e-mail on how to use Google Earth I would gladly do that. And , of course, since I'm learning ArcView right now who knows what I'll cook up!!!

Does the Next Tour move East through Texas?! :D
The next Tour itinerary is up for grabs, but it will most likely include '08 Worlds in Kalamazoo. Whether we can get to Texas on the way or back is kinda dicey. If there is more than one driver in the group I think we could pull it off, but there's lots of time left to decide. What would you offer for us to make a Tour Stop? ;)
BTW, I doubt you have anything in your bag older than me. :DDo you carry something older than a 1983 WDGC Kitty Hawk?

Is there a 2nd course at NAU now?
The NAU course that you played on for Am Worlds is no longer in existence. The land was used for a building, I think (didn't take the time to drive over to that part of campus). The new course plays very much like the old one, down to having a long downhill shot that plays along the power easement. Lots of woods, tunnel shots and moderate hills and lots of rocks to hike over. The course is adjacent to the large parking lot at the Southwest corner of campus - much easier to find. They did a fantasic job with the signage and other imenities - always a bonus in my book! With the addition of McPherson Park (reasonably close to downtown) Flagstaff deserves a return visit by Stroh Family Disc Golf.

Day 3: Farmington, New Mexico - Lion's Wilderness Park. The front 9 of this course is carved into a huge piece of sandstone - death to DX discs. It was bizarre, but real cool. It's a little hard to tell from the picture, but AJ is putting at a basket that is in a four foot deep depression. From where he stood he could probably only see the top of the chains. This was our first stop on Day 3 after an overnight in Gallup, NM.
