December 8-9, 2007 the fourth annual Piney Woods Pro-Am!!!
Tyler, Texas Lindsey Park

I am posting this now because I am seriously considering making this a Super Tour event. I have spoken with the PDGA Touring Manager and he thinks that I will be allowed to do this. Every year prior I have met the added money requirements for an A Tier, but I have been running a B Tier event. I would like to raise a significant amount of money for this event.

Soooooo...... to pull this off I am looking for large sponsors and I need to find a few prior to committing. I don't want an A Tier event with a minimum amount of money, I want one with a lot of added money. If you would like to get involved with a tournament that has exploded in size please PM me. I will have sponsor packages available within the month to send out to you and would like any help I can get. My current plan is to have an A/B Tier event with the A tier for the Open and Advanced Players and the B tier for Intermediate and Recreational players. This is so that the newer players can play a large event without having to be PDGA members. PDGA membership is a requirement for an A-Tier event.

This will be a charity event again this year. My intent is to make it either a benefit to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation or to a local East Texas childrens charity. I already have a sponsor who will be contributing directly to the charity in the tournaments name, I just need tournament sponsors now.

I realize I still owe two juniors their tropy labels from last year, I will be getting those out soon, sorry.

We will not be using UT Tyler if we need a third course. Should we need a third course I will be talking to the city about it this coming month. I already have mapped out a THIRD COURSE at Lindsey park, but I have to get City Park and Rec by in. This course will be called the Gold Course and it will be an extreme competition type of course. More to come....

this is 7 months b4 the event . That is quite promising .

How much $$ needs to be generated to obtain super tour status ???

Here is my concern and where I need some assistance:

I have almost always met the minimum amount of added money. For an A Tier event a minimum of $1000 needs to be added. For this event I feel I need to raise at least $2000 and perferably more. I will need to set Open entry fees somewhere around $100. I have reviewed other A-Tier events and entry fees run between $90 to $150. I am new at the Open division, so I am asking the Open players to tell me, is $100 to much? So far I have heard that this is about the expected amount.

The Advanced players will also be included in the A Tier section and entry fees will be increased. Int, Rec and Jr's will be in the B-Tier side and rates will substainially remain the same as last year.

For those of you that have played my event in the past you know that I have CTP's for every card during the third round. I need to collect about $1250 in retail items.

Please keep in mind that this is a charity event, so I am looking for two different types of sponsorship, one is for the tournament the other for the charity. I already have one benefactor that has agreed to donate a large amount of money to the charity, so I feel this is covered.

Last year we raised about $11,000 for the charity with about $1000 added to the open purse and about $750 worth of CTP materials. Thanks to all for this help! This year I hope to double or more than double all the above.

Double all of the above should be no problem.. There is plenty of time to make this happen... Jerry, let me know what else I can do to help.

BTW- 100 bucks for open is fine . Worth every penny for this event .

OMB vs YGB is in for $100 even if I have to cover it all myself :). This is one of the best tourneys of the year. A tier status makes it that much better. I might even be able to work out an online-signup-for-free sort of sponsorship, I'll have more info on that in a couple months. Let me know if there's anything our club can do to help this tournament out.

$100 is steep for a tournament, unless it fills up every year. I for one will not pay $100 to play in the Pro division. (one reason I cut back on tournament play a few years ago)

Hey Jerry, one thing I have noticed in the past 2 years, after the saturday rounds, everybody scatters like east texas cocroaches. How about a little party on Saturday night . Possibly hosted @ the host hotel !!
That would bring all the players together out side of the course and help enhance the overall tournament experience.

The Piney Woods Pro-Am IV will be held this year on December 8-9 in Tyler's Lindsey park. After much thought I have decided to continue holding this as a B Tier event. I would love to bump this to an A-Tier, but there are several problems this would pose and I have decided to hold off for another year.

I hope to have sponsor packages out within the next 2 to 3 weeks and would like to get any interested parties info. Please PM me if you are interested. This event is a benefit to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation and with sponsors assistance and player donations we raised almost $11,000 last year for the benefit. If you are interested please send me your contact info and I will get your package to you as quickly as I can. Contributions can be taken as cash or merchandise and thanks for your consideration.

Being the TD it is hard for me to tell, but from the players I have heard this is a must attend event. Kind of warms the cockles of my heart.

Piney Woods Pro-Am IV a benefit to the JDRF

Here we are for the fourth year. With this event increasing in size by leaps and bounds, I believe it will fill this year. Twisted Flyer (http://www.twistedflyer.com) will be handling sign ups this year and he should have signups set up within the next couple of weeks. As in the past this event raises money for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. Juvenile Diabetes, also know as Type I diabetes, is responsible for approximately 10% of all cases of diabetes. Juvenile diabetes is an autoimmune disease and typically affects younger children. The results of this deasese include loss of sensation in the extremities, loss of sight, loss of limbs, heart disease and often leads to death. I have been a Juvenile diabetic since the age of 19 and my 14 year old son has been since 3. My son takes 4 to 5 shots a day and his diet must be monitored constantly. The number of shots is not an indication of how bad his diabetes is, but how well we are trying to control its effects on his life.

Last year we raised approximately $11,000 to help find a cure for this disease. This year I plan to top that.

You can help in one or all of four ways. The first is by simply entering the tournament. Every entry will donate $3 to the JDRF. Last year this help to raise almost $450. The second way you can help is to become a tournament sponsor. With many levels of sponsorship, you can do anything from a simple donation, providing discs and merchandise for CTPs, to being a tee-shirt and hole sponsor, to being a major sponsor of the event! The third way to help is by purchasing a tournament CFR disc. The full color stamp this year will include a galaxy background with the rings of Saturn supporting a set of chains and basket. I will let you know later which discs will be available.

Was anyone counting? Well I am very excited to tell you that the fourth way you can help is by showing up, donating for a meal and eating State and World recognized BBQ. I know it sounds strange, but we will have three time state winner and fourth place world BBQ chefs, Mike and Geanie Gelushia cooking breakfast and lunch (possible supper if requested) both Saturday and Sunday. The Gelushia's have committed to providing sausage wraps for breakfast and Texas finest smoked brisket for lunch each day as well. ALL DONATIONS FOR MEALS WILL GO TO THE JDRF!!!! That is right, every $$ paid for your lunch will be donated by the Gelushias. Just imagine, if everyone ate at least one breakfast and lunch, we could raise over $1500 for this benefit.

So keep your eyes open for registration opening up on Twisted Flyer (http://www.twistedflyer.com) and I will keep you posted as things progress. In the mean time, if you want to mail in your registration I can send you a form for you to complete and you can beat the crowd. As in years previously, awards go out to the longest traveled player and the first to register..

The Rose City Disc Club, the City of Tyler Parks and Rec and an unnamed contributor has gotten enough money scrapped together to put concrete tee-pads and NEW BASKETS in on the Blue at Lindsey Park. This weekend the club will be discussing new and permenant pin placements and new tee-pads. We are working to get this done before the tournament so expect a few tweaks for the Piney Woods Pro-Am!

First of all, you can now pre-register at Twisted Flyer Registeration (http://www.twistedflyer.com/tournament_signup.php?t_id=25) This event will fill at 144 and I am expecting it to fill. If you want to play then I would suggest you pre-register now.

Next, course improvements are in the works!!! We plan on having all new cement pads on every hole. We plan on following that up with replacement dual chain baskets for the single chain baskets. More info to come.....

And finally, this year we will have breakfast and lunch on site. The chefs are state champion bar-b-que'rs and have even taken 4th in world competition. They will require a donation for each meal that is very well priced. How can they ask for a donation for a meal? The donation you give for your meal will be going directly the the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundaiton! Every $$! World class chefs and more money for the benefit, what more could you ask for?

I am making a call for donations. Donations can be in cash or merchandise. These donations will be used for the benefit, the tournament and for CTP's. If you have discs lieing around collecting dust, pass them over! They can help to make this event great.

For those of you that have never played my tournament I can promise you a great time. I run one of the most prompt events around, the courses are a lot of fun and I have attracted players from as far away as Ohio, California, British Columbia and even Australia (sort of on that one). So, don't take to long to decide and I will see you in December.

The Piney Woods Pro-Am is a benefit to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.

Type 1 diabetes is usually diagnosed in children and young adults, and was previously known as juvenile diabetes. In type 1 diabetes, the body does not produce insulin. Insulin is a hormone that is needed to convert sugar (glucose), starches and other food into energy needed for daily life.

Having type 1 diabetes increases your risk for many serious complications. Some complications of type 1 diabetes include: heart disease (cardiovascular disease), blindness (retinopathy), nerve damage (neuropathy), and kidney damage (nephropathy).

Thanks to the American Diabetes Association (http://www.diabetes.org/type-1-diabetes.jsp) for the above into. I personnally am very knowledgable about this disease, first because I was diagnosed with it at the age of 19 and second because my 14 year old son was diagnosed at the age of 3. He does not remember a time that he did not have to get shots, or his fingers lanced for blood to test sugar level. I pray daily for a cure for my son.

Last year this event raised close to $11,000 with sponsor and player donations and I have been told by many players that this is a must attend event. I don't know, since I never get to play, but I believe I offer a lot of things that players enjoy at tournaments such as; respect for all players, prompt starts, quick posting of payouts, two great courses that are a blast to play in the same park, prompt posting of hole assignments and one of the quickest tabulations of scores and payout. For the past three years I have gotten everyone out by 4:00 to 4:30 and even managed to clean up and play a round myself. Not an easy thing to do in December.

This event will not find a cure for Juvenile Diabetes but it will certainly help and I am inviting you to join us. If you are interested in sponsoring, please contact me, if you are interested in playing, I would strongly suggest pre-registering, because I believe it will fill this year. I will have Champion Destroyers and T-Rex-X's for sponsorship discs this year and if you are looking to assure your purchase, please drop me a line at jerrypower@sbcglobal.net

See everyone in December!

Some updates, the park is being revamped! By this weekend the entire park will have cement tee-pads with exception of a hole or two that may have asphalt. Either are much better than natural pads.

Second, we will be installing new tee signs and they should really make the course look sharp. I would describe it, but you will simply have to come see.

Third, all new baskets will be replacing the existing baskets on the Blue course! We are working hard to get these all in by the tournament.

Remember signups are at Twisted Flyer (http://www.twistedflyer.com/tournament_details.php?t_id=25) and as I have stated, I believe this event will fill.

Updates!!!

We should have all the new tee pads in by Wednesday! Several of the existing asphalt tee pads will stay, but the old dirt pads will be gone. Additionally we have the new tee signs up for the Red course. The other signs will be up by December 1-2. The new baskets will be up by then as well. If you are coming out to play the course as a warm up, you had best wait. We pulled several of the old baskets yesterday to make room for the new ones and part of the blue course is out of commission for a week and a half. We have worked on the course and cleaned it up quite a bit, now the dreaded 3/15 extension on the red course should only be very hard to play instead of extremely hard ;) ;) ;)

A bit of sad news, the award winning barbequer's will not be able to make the event. They got their weekends crossed and have booked the Dec 8-9 weekend and cannot get out of it. If anyone else wants to cook some lunch, the weekend is open. hint, hint hint......

so for people coming from a few hrs away, what is the situation for places to stay? there hotels nearby or people who are planning on having floorspace for those playing?

There are quite a few hotels near the course. I don't have any real recommendations, but I'm sure hotels.com or expedia.com can give you ratings, etc. Just search for Tyler, TX and try to get one on the SW side of town. If you can't, though... Tyler's not too terribly large and the course is just a few minutes off of the loop. We usually stay at the Ramada since rates are cheap and we get TripRewards points :)

I must be suffering from the amount of work and short time to get stuff done..... sorry and thanks. Pre-reg at www.twistedflyer.com (http://www.twistedflyer.com)

I am strongly recommending pre-registering either by mail or on www.titledisc.com. (http://www.titledisc.com)

Correction: sign up for this year's event at http://www.twistedflyer.com . :)

We would have loved to host signups for the PWPA this year, and perhaps we will next year... but for now be sure to hit up Twisted Flyer and get registered before the event fills! see you all in Tyler.

The club was out in the rain and cold today to get the new pins in. Tomorrow all but two of the new baskets will be in and ready for play. The city only has 4 or so more boxes to pour and all the tee's will be cement or asphalt. As of this evening, you now have eleven days left to pre-register on line. I am 1/4 of the way to filling which is about twice what it was last year at this time. If you are coming from out of town, please pre-register, I cannot take more than 144 players. Due to the amount of light in the day, I can only run 4 person cards and I WILL cut off entrees once I hit 144. If you don't want to sign up on line then drop me your e-mail and I will send you a registeration form that you can fill out and mail back.

Current predictions for December 8-9 are calling for partly cloudy with temps in the mid 50's. As always, added money to every division, that includes sponsorship to offset player's packages, healthy am payouts, trophies are not taken out of player's fees, added money to every open division and as always every junior and woman are prize winners!

Last major chance of the year to collect points and a must play event!!! See everyone is less than two weeks!

Two closest hotel/motels are La Quinta and Fairfield Inn.* Both are ~3.5 miles from Lindsey Park.

We now have all the pins out, new and updated, so everyone is welcome to head this way for a little practice. The city only has four (I believe) boxes left to pour and the club has 9 more new tee signs to place and we will be done. Except for a little more cleanup work, that is, but the courses are both playable and the pins are in the longer positions for practice.

I will get hotel info up within a day or so, I have been busy at the course and simply have not had the time to get this together. Sorry about that.

Current forecast is partly cloudy, with a high on Saturday of 49 and on Sunday of 67!!!! It should be sweet.

Pre-registeration will be open at Twisted Flyer Signup (http://www.twistedflyer.com/tournament_signup.php?t_id=25) until 12/3, so if you plan on pre-registering on-line you need to do it NOW! With registeration from Twisted Flyer, snail mail, and locals promising to sign up this weekend, I am about 1/3 full with less than two weeks to go.

We have doubles on Friday with signup from 1:00 until 4:00. You may sign up after that if you want, but you will be finishing in the dark. :p

Please remember, I cannot run 5 man cards. Once I hit 144 registeration will stop. I would like to get everyone in, but I simply cannot do it and have rounds complete before it gets dark. The only 5 man cards will be due to balancing the pools, odd divisions, and any pre-reg problems. I will see everyone in less than two weeks......

This hotel is average and is very well priced. To get the discounted rate, just tell them you are with the Piney Woods Pro-Am and give them the disounted rate stated above.

I have spoken with the player and he was unaware of his rating. He will move up. I did not check his rating when I posted it, but that is just the pre-register list. My scoring routine checks all that at the time I generate hole assignments and I would have caught it then.

Thanks for pointing it out.

Chilis restaurant has graciously donated several gift certificates that will be handed out during the CTP give away and for a few other things. In particular I want to buy supper for several players at Chilis on Saturday night and here is how I plan on doing it, four clues will be hidden on hole sponsorship signs and in the brochure handed out to each player. Once combined and the answer determined these clues will result in supper at Chilis for the first couple of the lucky players to decode the clues.

This will also get people looking at the sponsors names. Sponsors gladly donate money and merchandise so that our disc golf tournaments can be successful. Most sponsors are very reasonable in their pricing and we, as players in these tournaments, should patronize these businesses......

This message brought to you by Chilis restaurants!!

I have a few limited edition full zip hoodies with the tournament logo on back. They are high quality, dark charcoal and look very sharp. If anyone is interested in purchasing one, I am selling them for $35. Let me know if you are interested. I should have a few at the tournament, but I don't have that many. They were bought for club members and I have a few left over.

The city has been busy with the new concrete teepads and should have them finished by tomorrow.

The course fairways have been pruned and re-pruned and with just a bit more weed eating on one of the new pin placements, the course will be at the best shape for a tournament that I have ever seen it at.

As stated before, sighnups at www.TwistedFlyer.com (http://www.TwistedFlyer.com) will be closed Tuesday 12/4, so If you plan on registering on-line you need to get it done this weekend. Today is the last day to register on-line. I suspect we will fill by 6:00 on Friday, but if not I will have registeration from 7:00 until 8:30 Saturday morning for those last few spots.

As stated before, I will not overfill, except to accomodate odd pools sizes or long distance travelers. It is not a matter of not wanting to get as many players as possible, it is a matter of timing. Wow!! We are at 92 players that have either pre-registered online or at the course. Entrys are now listed on line (http://www.pdga.com/tournament/tournament_results.php?TournID=7222#Open) . I will be running registeration at the course on Friday from 1:00 until 6:00 and Saturday from 7:00 until 8:30, but I suspect it will fill before 6:00 on Friday. If you plan on playing and have not registered, please get here early Friday to register.

On-line registeration has now been closed and as much as I would like to, I cannot hold spots. Once I fill at 144 (balanced pools) I will close registeration. I will only overfill the pools for women players, players with special needs, such as problems with on-line registeration or long distance travel and family members and while I come from a large family, you are probably not a member of it!

It is not that I don't want everyone to play, it is a daylight problem. I would love to run it up to 5 man cards, but I cannot do it.

Doubles will be run from 1:00 until 5:00, if you sign up after 4:00 you may be finishing in the dark

Open $40.00 per team
Adv $30.00 per team (open players may play Adv. but must have a rating less than 955)

Well I am off to the park to finish a little more work and start taking the final registerations. I still have some slots left in the A Pool (Advanced and Open divisions), but things are tight. The B Pool (all other divisions), still has quite a bit of room, but I suspect it will fill by late this afternoon.

As stated before, I cannot overfill the pools, except for special circumstances. Don't get me wrong, this is a good kind of problem to have. It is not often that an event has too many players :D

I will post an updated players list this evening and be taking calls throughout the day, see everyone at the course.

This might be a little late to post, but as an FYI -

My local Walgreen's drugstore has been taking donations to the JDRF (the same charity we're benefitting this weekend) at the cash register when you check out. If you can't contribute this weekend, you might check with your local Walgreen's and see if they are (still) participating in this effort. A couple bucks here and there goes a long way.

Is that Best Western or Best Value? The number listed connects me to the Best Value Inn.

The hotel listed at the bottom of page 12 is called the Best Western, but the phone number and address match the Best Value. I know I'm sharing a room there, and am trying to find directions online.

Scores are up!!!

Several HOT rounds....

Coda shoots a blazing hot 44 the last round to tie up with JD for first place, they play 4 to 5 holes to finish it with Coda breatking the tie to win.

Kyle Power is in third place in the masters in the third round and flashes past James McCaine to TIE with Marcus Roberts for first by shooting a 47. An old man, well younger than me by 1.5 years, but still...... Two holes in Marcus breaks the tie to win first place. I am pretty sure that Kyle shot that 47 because I lent him my cart.

Overall a good tournament. I kept screaming we were going to fill and I think we would have if people had not been scared of the weather. 83 on Saturday, 78 on Sunday, pretty scary :p

Thanks to all the players, see you next year.

Can you say that <iles and I split $400 instead of $398. I mean we really did split 399 which is $199.50 but $200 looks better.

Pretty funny guys, if you want me to report a $1 more I will do so.

My laptop did not just pass out on me, it underwent a fatal flaw. Thank the lord for backups on remote harddrives or I would have been re-entering all of the scores and scratching my head on some of the notes I made Saturday.

Thanks to everyone that came. We overfilled the A Pool and was pretty close to doing the same in the B Pool, however no one was turned away. Actually I should thank the weather man who said it was going to rain Saturday and Sunday and scared those last few players away. I would have to say they missed it with beautiful golf weather all weekend. Saturday was partly sunny with a high around 83 and while it sprinkled Sunday morning, it never rained. Most of the clouds burned off and the temp came in at about 78. December in East Texas

Thanks goes out to all the sponsors, Twisted Flyer, Try Tone Records, Sister Sue, Innova, Discraft, Millenium, Gateway and multiple local sponsors. With the sponsors help we had $1100 added cash for the pro divisions. Player individual donations raised about $500 for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation and I have not figured the money work up yet, but there is more added money from CFR sales, etc. Once I count it up, I will get it posted.

I also want to thank the Rose City Disc Club members. We, as a whole, worked hard to get the course in shape and many individual members stepped up to help with all the extra things a TD needs help with. In particular thanks to David, Kyle, Jim, Mike, Paul, Tom, Clint, Tim, Mikey and Darren. My brother was also very helpful in running a block and carried me for the holes I did not carry him on during the one round of doubles I got to play;)

The Tyler Parks and Rec department even came out Friday afternoon to smooth the dirt around the new boxes and to do a little more park work. If it had not been for the City the course would not have looked nearly as nice as it did.

I know I am forgetting others, so please forgive me, but everyone that had a good time owes my wife. She allows me to house the indigent during the weekend, acts the perfect hostest and even performs catering service. I do love my wife. :D

I will start working to get the weather setup for next year, but early predictions are for more fine golfing;)

I have got to tell this story......

While we had several players brush the chains this weekend, we only had one player hit an ace. As best I can tell the story:

Bobby Marshall threw from the Red course hole 13 short tee. This hole is an island with a street running all along the left hand side of the tee past the pin, with a road splitting off to the right before the basket. It runs a little over 200 ft, but it can easily hurt you. I have played this hole a hundred times and you can very easily try to spike a hyzer in and have it skip into the road, play it safe wide right and be to far out for a putt, lefty or side arm it and blow way past the basket or stay in the street, or drive short and lay up for a par. Bobby threw a knife hyzer that went past the basket, the disc hit the ground, flexed and bounced BACKWARDS into the basket. His first ace ever and he picks up $535. He is probably hooked on this game forever ;)

I saw three close calls, but missed the backwards ace :)

I know that Britt Browning hit *very* solid chains on Red Hole 12 - short tee (our CTP hole) but somehow managed to fall back out of the basket and land 2 feet away. I smacked the front of Blue 12's pan from the short tee (one more MPH of breeze from that headwind and it was in :D). I also saw someone from the 3rd or 4th Open card tickle the chains on Blue 13 from the short pad... that's a 340-ish slow, blind RHBH hyzer... nice shot, whoever you were.

Fun times this weekend, and we didn't even get rained on! Thanks for running this thing again, Jerry. See you next year :)

The Natural slips down to the 3rd Card and rebounds to the #1 card for the last round. Nicely done there Miles. Finishes tied for 3rd.

As for me I was a 3rd Card Lifer.lol.

Great job Jerry!!! I will definitely be back next year.

Put of the Day: Putting for my 4 on a duece hole , The putter hits top chains and comes back and lands on edge of the rim of the basket standing up - leans in and out for about 3 or four secound and falls in....SWEET. Had to be there for the crazyness.
