I havent seen it on the tour dont know if that was a mistake or not?? I played the course during Thanksgiving and the front was short and technical and the back was more open. It was a solid course and I would expect to shoot a few down every round.
Athens is our home course. Like already said, the front 9 is short with some longer ones on the back 9. There are tons of trees, some close to the water shots, over the water shots, etc. It is quite technical with holes to right & left, shorts, longs. All concrete is OB which makes some of the holes tougher. Some mando holes where you have to stay to a certain side of the marker and that sort of thing. The added holes are nice. There is one which is a doozie. Very long shot, over water, with the basket close to the pond. Every year lots of discs get lost on that hole. Come with a good arsenal of shots available, you'll need 'em. And, make sure you bring plastic that you won't miss if you lose it for those pesky water holes. If you need camping space, just PM me and Mark & I will try to hook you up. We are allowing campers in our yard & field this year weather permitting. We are also in the progress of trying to get a hotel sponsor this year since this weekend will not be Canton 1st Monday weekend. BRING YOUR WOMEN!!!we don't get many women for this event, but we would like to see more, definitely. I'm playing Women's Rec and would like other women to play against. Currently there are only 2 of us. But, all in all, this event is well worth playing for everyone, no matter your sex, age, or division. We'd love to see you all out there, so come and join us for the Paul Giles!

yes, this is an old school course designed by John Houck around 1988. The front nine are mostly tunnel shots with wicked rough. Most are birdiable with the right shot.
The back nine are longer and more open shots with mostly birdie shots (again with the right shot)
Then there are the added holes, including the A hole. 200ft to the pond, then 100ft over water to the basket sitting 5ft off the pond. Trees protecting the hyzer shot and trees behind the basket. Oh yea, the basket sits on the slope too. Lots of OB's o this hole. EVEN if you lay it up.
This tournnament has a history of filling up for year going back to the 90's. It is a favorate for long time players. I even got word that a former Pro Rookie of the year should be there.
Unfortunatly, I will be unable to attend again this year.
THis is a must play event ... Great time's in Athens... All the temp holes will be more than happy to take away all the strokes you got on the short side... WORTH THE DRIVE..
ANd there is this little mexican joint in town that is very shibby!

I am going to post a general comment and plea for help....
The Athens group is pretty small and they help Brian as much as they can, but one thing they cannot supply is the 6 extra baskets required to make the course 24 holes. If you own a portable regulation basket and can easily break it down, please consider bringing it along. The Tyler crew will be helping with this as well, but most of us do not have a vehicle that can carry all the baskets needed and bring anyone else to split gas costs. If you can bring one then please consider doing so. Thanks.
Thanks for thinking of that Jerry. Mark and I are doing all we can to get everything ready for the Giles, but that's one thing that had escaped my mind until now. We are still checking in to hotels here (the people here seem to have negative ideas about discgolf so we haven't had as good of luck as I would have hoped getting a hotel sponsor.) I'll let everyone know if/as soon as I get a hotel to sponsor us. Jerry: If you guys need a vehicle to transport baskets, to/from Tyler give Mark a call maybe we can help there too, eh! Take care all and we'll see you in 2 weeks!!! :D

This event is coming up THIS WEEKEND. The course is a blast and it usually draws a good competitive group. Sign ups can be done at www.maceman.com (http://www.maceman.com) , be sure to choose tournament signup in the shipping or you will be charged shipping.
Chris Farnham had a hard weekend at the Pecan Park Open, but he currently is playing in the zone. If I were a betting man, I would say he will not have a round less than 990+ and quite possibly will take the tournament.

Entries are slowly rolling in. The list as it stands is here. (http://www.pdga.com/tournament/tournament_results.php?TournID=6938#Open)
If there is anyone that is going out on Friday that has a full size pickup that could tow the 20 foot trailer that I have used for The Big Show the last 2 years that would be a big help. I will not need help getting it back just out there and to the course on Saturday. My small trailer was stolen and I have not had a chance to replace it.

It did rain here in Athens last night, but today is sunny and most of the stuff is already drying out. The forecast for our neck of the woods for the the rest of the week & weekend is sunny and warm so we shouldn't have to worry about getting wet this year. Look foward to having a good turnout of women this year!!! Sue...see ya soon!

Over by the neighborhood, holes 8 , 9, and 10 ( me thinks )
those dont drain worth a flip. But the pond for the alternate hole should be nice and full... Good luck guys.

It is with a heavy heart that I must post the majority of the Tyler crew wil not make this event. Part of it has to do with work, part of it with prior commitments and part of it is scheduling, but the major problem is going to be baskets. In the years gone by the Tyler crew has always stepped up to bring a major portion of the baskets for the extra 6 holes. Welllllll, no players with trucks, except Chris will be going. I plan on breaking one of my baskets down and bringing it over, but that is only one basket. As of Wednesday, Chris stated he would be making the tournament, but he only has one basket. That means that Tyler can only supply two baskets this year. It does not matter if your basket is as broken down as a 40 year old mule, if you can bring a basket, please do so. If we have a few too many we can pick and choose the best to put out, but if we have a few too few, there will not be the alternate holes that everyone loves. Thanks and hope to see everyone this weekend.

dunno if this beats lockwood's 11... but 3 or 4 years ago when the basket was right next to the water (not on the sidewalk): My first drive went in the pond, so I reteed. in again on 3, reteed again. shot 5 hit the basket from the tee!! rolled into the water. drop-in tin-cup-style triple-circle-7. I was way out of the running already so it was a lot of fun to take out my frustration on that hole :)
Deidre and I will see you all in the morning. We're both pumped to be playing this tournament again. Paul Giles was a distant relative of mine (though I didn't know that while he was alive) and this tournament was the first one Deidre and I played together back in 2004 (it was her first sanctioned event). This year should be a little bit drier and hopefully even more fun. less than 24 hours till the players' meeting :)

the word is also that a few players are demolishing this course while the rest of us play along :).
JD starts off with an amazing -14 (better than the entire field of players by at least 6 strokes) and looks like he can't be caught. Then Nolan shoots -15 the second round to bring it within 4. Because the course is playing very slightly differently this year (hole 12 has been deleted in favor of a more neighbor-friendly alternate hole of a similar difficulty) it's a new course ripe for new records. JD set the course record this morning and Nolan took it from him immediately this afternoon. I'm not sure, but I heard that -15 is an all-time record for 24 holes at Cain Center.
In Amateur News, my boy Phillip Hall has torn up Advanced this weekend shooting back-to-back -8 rounds. It wasn't that long ago before I was beating him easily... but it's safe to say he's found some real game out there. Having just moved up from Intermediate to Advanced, he's really making it happen. Both rounds earned estimated ratings of over 1000... if he keeps it up, he won't be in Advanced for long.
Cain Center is playing beautifully this weekend. The weather today was warm but calm, and tomorrow looks to be more of the same. If you didn't make it this year... you really missed a good one.

A run down and my experiance.....
We had beautiful weather all weekend. This is unusual for this tournament since we usually see at least a little rain, but it was very nice. The first round started in the upper 60's to low 70's with only slight wind. Due to the lack of masters this year the few masters left moved to the open division. I got to play my first ever round with JD, and it was very nice watching him play. He is very smooth and a wonder on 50 to 60 foot putts. I cannot count the number I saw him hit. Everyone saw the 14 he shot, but the untold story was that he actually nailed the basket on 4 others and they simply did not stay.
I have heard lots of people claim to be robbed on a putt, but my experiance has always been that they hit a little to high, too low or too far to the right or left. On two of JD's putts he hit exactly were he meant, a perfect 1/3 up, slightly right of center of the pole. In particular, if you are familiar with Cain park, hole number 11 is the farthest from the parking lot, pretty much a straight, low shot with a manadatory to the right that very rarely comes into play. JD was sitting about 25' short, and I believe he was CTP. He hit the basket perfect and his disc turns sideways and slips out the back. By my count he could easily have been sitting at 16 down.
That first round I kept pretty close to JD, not bad for an old Adv. Masters player, recently playing the Masters and Open divisions. Pretty much the box was held by either myself or JD the whole round. JD stalled at 12 down for several holes and I had managed to close the gap to only 3 with a 9 down. By hole 15A he had manged to widen it again by 1. Hole 15A, the infamous hole. Several posts back have spoken of hole 15A with such glorious scores of 11 and 7. It really is not that bad a hole, but it can eat you up.
If only I had layed up and then shot across the pound What is it about that hole, I just cannot lay up. Suffice it to say that I was only 6 inches from the shore on my drive. The drive was more than long enough, it just clipped the bushes past the hole and to the right. 6 inches, sigh. However, 6 inches is just as bad as 100 feet if it is OB. Then I clipped the same d&*n bush on my up shot. Once again I was 6" short. That number 6 continues to haunt me. And so I throw my second up shot and come to rest about 3 feet from the basket. Make my putt and walk away with a 6. Curses! This left me at 6 down. Once again that number 6. JD I believe birded the hole and ends the round with a 14 down. I managed to have a good enough score to make the top card, but I fear I must have used everything I had the first round and shot poorly the second....... but, one legimate round with the top card was fun, almost as much fun as World's last year (almost, but not quite)
