The Beaver State Fling NT/A-Tier Event will be happening this year on May 25th, 26th and 27th, 2007. Last's year's Beaver State Fling was so much fun and successful that the team decided to keep the ball rolling in 2007.

Pros will be playing four rounds on the fabulous River Bend East and West Courses at Milo McIver State Park in Estacada, Oregon. Friday will be two shot gun start rounds playing each side of the park once, followed by tee times on Saturday and Sunday afternoons to play the east and the west one last time. For the Am's, well sorry but it is sold out, you will be playing tee times Saturday and Sunday. Please check the link below for flight information and schedule.

For information pertinent to this year's "don't miss" NT event, please to be clicking here: 2007 Beaver State Fling (http://beaverstatefling.com) On the tournament home page, you'll find oh-so-convenient online registration, links to course maps, directions, lodging, sponsorship info, merchandise, and a current registration list. Event flyers are available here.

Make the trip this year, and join some of the best touring players in the nation at one of the nation's gems, River Bend Disc Golf Course at Milo McIver State Park. It's sure to be a blast and a half. If this event is on your list of possible events to attend then hurry while you still can, the list is filling fast for the Pro side, however the AM side sold out within the first Month of opening registration. Don't miss out or sucumb to the waitlist woes, register now and don't miss out on this great event and the opportunity to play these courses against some of the best in the world!

The hot stamped Innova discs will be available this week, they were shipped last week to the Td's address. Art for the hot stamp should be up tomorrow or Wednesday on the website

Innova is having trouble with the InnColor process and it doesn't look like they will have it fixed in time for the Beaver State Fling so we will go with the DISCRAFT Super Color process and we will be running three versions of Art this year, and they are sure to impress!

I believe Cris Bellinger will be Posting the Art this week on the website and I will remind him tomorrow.

Robbie and I had a blast last year, with the only drawback being the food poisoning I got at the players party on Saturday night... did anyone else eat the potato salad?

We're looking forward to making the trip back up there.

Matt,

You have a PM.

Jim,

Sorry to hear about that food poisoning, this is the first I heard of it, as I did not make it to the players party until later (tourney work) I ended up ordering from the grill. Todd Andrews is our player party coordinator and is taking care of the food requirements this year. He is taking measures to reduce the costs and something about selection, I will pass on your news and see if he can avoid anything with mayonnaise.

Glad to see Robbie and you making it out again, I still can't believe the perfect roller Robbie put down on 14 East (1047 ft hole) while I was spotting the first round!

For anyone who has never played that hole, the hole makes a dog leg right turn, but the turn itself is probably 350-375 feet long, and it starts about 290 feet off the tee, the fairway is severly protected on the left side the whole way with large spruce and douglas fir trees precariously placed to swat down over zealous air shots, and the rights side is a drop off to the river. The ideal shot is to throw a roller that ends well off to the right side of the turn at about 375-425 then throw another roller to continue the turn and carry as far as you can get it to go. The Shot Robbie threw put it out about 425 on the roll and set himself up for a great next roller shot, taking the trees out of play. The best tee shot I saw the first round on that hole. The hole is not overly difficult but is long and requires several great throws, 7 times it was scored as a three for Open Men and 14 times as a four but the majority scored a 5 or worse. Our ground is not as flat and hard as the gorund at the Memorial so 425 might sound short for a roller but it was perfectly placed and took the trees out of play for the second shot, any further on the roll and he might have ended up in the shule or river.

NOTE TO ALL PRO DISC GOLFERS:

If you can figure out a way to play this tourney, DO IT! This course is the best venue on the west coast, coupled with the best hospitality I've experienced at a large tournament. Everything is run so incredibly smoothly all u have to do is show up with your plastic and wait for your tee time!

If you've never played Milo before I think I can safely say that it will redefine what you consider HUGE disc golf! I'm not saying all the holes are '1000 monsters (though there are a few), but the whole place just makes you feel like you are on another planet, a planet designed specifically for disc golf euphoria.

Imagine being lost in an old growth forest, walking into a clearing to discover a disc golf paradise that covers seemingly miles of HUGE technical disc golf. 1000'+ holes on the same course as insanely tight wooded holes reaching out to 200' (that u are just hoping to par!) Feel it, feel it...

Now get u signed up!

Now if you want to see the hole I was describing above go to the 18holeEast.html link and look at hole 14

Nice camera work Jeff, I remember seeing a higher Res of that shoot but google usually kills them before posting. Maybe you will have time this year to catch hole 2 West on camera during the final round from the Bathrooms so you can shoot the tee shot and the approach to the stump postion.

Funny you should mention that. See the link below (I did some searching and editing last night) it shows Barry Schultz playing hole 2 west at the 2004 BSF. I filmed from next to the bathroom.. camera work is not great.. but viewers should get the idea and I a drew up a little map of the hole to help :)

I hope to get those posted soon on the webpage! /msgboard/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

Stay Tuned

We are also up to 104 Pro's registered for the Fling so far and it looks like a few new players are making it this year. Matt is coming in from Alabama, Kevin from Florida, Cutt from North Carolina and Mark Lawrence and Melissa Wiseman from Michigan. Bob Graham is making it back again from New Jersey while Robbie Bratten and Jim Davidson are coming back from Texas to seek justice! We are glad to have you all coming in from so far away, I hope you have no jet lag and you find the courses to inspire you to play your best golf!

Dirty.. if you want to camp I bet a bunch of people will be doing that right near the course:

Camping:

Group camping at Milo McIver State Park
Group site "A" space is limited first come first serve
Contact: Dustin Milbrodt (milbrodtd@hotmail.com)
$5.00 per night per person
The day use parking fee is included in the per night price

Else if you go to www.odsa.com/forum (http://www.odsa.com/forum) and post there, you might find someone in Oregon that would let you crash on their floor.

Hope you can make it... always a good time.

I just wanted to update everybody on what is going on with tournament events.

First, we have contacted the local media outlets and the local FOX affiliate has shown interest in covering the event on Thursday before the event and during the final round on Sunday. Details are still forthcoming, but hopefully all will work out. Also, we are working with a few people to help produce a DVD of this years event for future sale and fundraising.

Second, we have finalized our agreement with the Viewpoint Restaurant and Lounge to once again host the players party on Saturday night. The Fly Mart will be upstairs again for all ages access and they will be featuring a spaghetti feed buffet with garlic bread and salad for a great price (and no mayo). If there is enough interest they have offered to have a free Texas holdem tournament. (No buy in, no payout, just for fun). If interested, please contact the TD. There will not be a band this year, but we are going to try to show disc golf videos on the TV along with a slideshow of pictures from the event.

Course prep is coming along and we will be having our final work party on mothers Day to spread wood chips on all of the holes that need it. We have also arranged for an RV camping area along hole 7W with additional tent camping at group camp D as group camp A has been limited to 25 cars. Once again, we will have a beautiful venue to show off how beautiful springtime in Oregon can be.

Lastly, we have teamed up with Jay Harbor and huk lab to produce a limited edition dry fit t-shirt featuring the original BSF NT logo. If you have never seen this logo Im sure one of the lurkers will post a link soon with more information posted on the website after all the details have been worked out.

Well, I hope that everyone who wants to come has registered as I just noticed that the event is full. A big THANK YOU to everyone who registered early for an event that is sure to be one to remember.

Regards,

All divisions are filled (a month before the event!)... call the TD to get on the waitlist. 144 pro players and 144 am players... this is going to be a great weekend.

We have listened to the feedback from last year and are working on significantly improving the players party. Better and (much) cheaper food + more activities should make the party more entertaining.

We are also going to have a video crew film the rounds and will be offering a DVD of the event (video to include both Pros and Ams).

The BSF staff is looking forward to seeing you all in a few weeks!

This is the logo for the shirts as I was told, the design is up to Jay so you know it will look good, the shirt is a limited edition, limited numbers dry fit shirt for sponsorship (I believe). The text in the graphic will change to reflect current event. I have not seen the final product or shirt but rumor had it the colors might be black/white. I am willing to bet it will look awesome and they will go fast, considering how fast those discs went when they came out 2 years ago.

Trust me Milo is not one of those courses that is better to play blind, two days of practice should be good as long as you don't go gung ho and throw like 72 holes a day and run out of steam! First time to the west coast huh logan, well Mt hood still has a nice coat of snow on her for the looking so when you get here see if anyone is going up to play in the snow and catch a ride. Last year Ken Climo came out to play and had never seen snow so Dave, Avery and a few others took him up to Mt. Hood and had a snow ball fight and slid around on the slopes. Good times!

It would be nice to see, so far the last three years Barry Schultz has owned the Milo McIver courses and anyone playing against him on them, last year he finished the last round with a 48 and a 5 stroke win.

For a little history in 2004 the BSF was an A-Tier and Dave Feldberg lost to Barry in a playoff, 2005 Dave lost to Barry by 1 stroke in the First NT for the BSF, 2006 Dave lost to Barry by 5 strokes. In the 2 years it has been an NT Schultz, Feldberg, Rico and Anthon have been the top 4 finishers. Will Feldberg take the win this year, or will Climo keep his NT wins rising with a win this year or will Rico have one less bad hole and get the win? Its anyones game until Sunday and then you better have a lead and a strong will to win!

No not the tallest, but it is the tallest in Oregon at 11,239 ft. Tallest point in the US is Mt. McKinley in Alaska @ 20,320 ft followed by Mt. Whitney in California @ 14,505 ft. But with the glaciers on Mt. Hood, Skiing is open year around and there are members of the US Olympics team that use it. We also have ski camps on Mt. Hood in the middle of summer, nothing funnier than seeing Snow Skis in the Portland Airport in August! I believe Mt. Hood is the only US mountain that has organized year around skiing!

Good times!

Sorry but I find that very hard to believe. I know Climo is from Florida and all, but I find it very hard to believe that a 38-yr. old man who has traveled the world to play disc golf had never seen snow before until last year. Climo was up on Snowbowl during Pro Worlds 2003 in the hailstorm which also deposited a 1/2 inch coating of snow on the upper mountain.

May 15 2007, 03:26 PM
I am just going by what Dave and Avery said, at the players party after they got back from the mountain. Perhaps playing in the snow for the first time is a better use of words than seeing for the first time :o

Thanks for keeping me honest and accurate! (no sarcasm)

So is the 27 hole main layout going to be split into two different 18 hole coures like it has been in the past? an east and west from what i've heard from people who've played this event in the past.

Flash_25296
May 15 2007, 03:38 PM
Yes, there are 9 holes that are only used in tournament play. Two tournaments a year get to use those placements (permanent anchors no temp baskets), the reason they are only used twice a year is because it requires closing the lower part of the Park and with the Park being a state park it is Multi-Use!

All of the 27 holes in the 27 hole layout are used but with a few tweaks to make the 2 18's flow really well!

When are you landing in Portland Logan?

I will be at the courses all day Thursdy helping set up the course with Tee Signs and Distance stakes so maybe we can play a round!

I would say look at the last two years of info on PDGA for this tourney and then pick from the most consistent player over two those years correlating with this years results for each player so far. Courses are the same as last year so expecting similar SSA's, other factors to consider, Must have a good roller, plays in damp or windy conditions well, length is not a problem and can throw a driver from the fairway as easily as from a tee pad, also must be a good putter from 40-50 feet out, this can shave quite a few strokes at Milo McIver.

Yes depending on when you are scheduled to tee off, if you have an early tee time and want to check in to get your players packs you can do so before or after your first round, it is entirely up to you.

You will however be required to check in at your starting hole with the starter 15 minutes before your tee time. Please make sure you know what hole you start on, 10 West and 11 East are about 2 miles apart!

AM check-in will be done at your assigned tee at least 20 minutes before your tee time. In other words, if you have a 7:50 tee time you MUST be at your tee at 7:30 to check in. You will receive your player's handbook, scorecards, etc. at that time. You will be able to pick up your players pack items on Thursday, Friday, or Saturday (before or after your 1st round). Each tee has a warm-up basket for putting. Saturday and Sunday we'll be using the dog run for driving / throwing warm ups. See you there!

Two days away, the courses are ready, temporary tee signs are in place, permanent ones go in tomorrow with the distance stakes on each hole and any temporary tee pads. Several out of towners are here now and have been out at the course, always a fun time of year for the state parks when they see the numbers on the courses increase significantly during the prep and consequent event. The Men's Open was an outstanding finish, and I'm putting the pdgatour.com wrap-up together as I wait for my flight and possibly on the plane to Philly (MAYBE...I'm a little fatigued from the amazing weekend).

Feldberg smashed a 50-footer on hole 18 to force the three-way playoff, as Nate laid up out of the thick brush, and Avery cruised by the basket trying to get the win.

The real story happened on the earlier holes, though, but you'll have to read pdgatour.com to find out more.

As someone who has had the great fortune of hitting many of the NT venues over the last year, I can tell you that this year's Beaver State Fling has set a new standard for our top product in the PDGA. The courses, the competitors, the volunteers, the operations, the infrastructure, the amenities, the vendors...I could go on, but I think you get the idea.

Congras to Thereas and Cris and the ENTIRE host of volunteers for a job, not well done, but BEST done!

Bravo...what disc golf is meant to be.

just one more thing about the live scoring...we had to do a rush job on the system to set up the sudden death holes. This was definitely a learning experience from someone who's done live scoring for the last two years. There is an entire backend that is all tied together with pars and ratings, etc...so we added the one hole sudeen death under the Finals Option.

I'm just so glad that you all are checking out the live scoring. Hate to think that we're doing for nothing.

Thanks!

I am very tired after the weekend but it was a great one, I was the scoring director for the event and took care of all of the scoring statistics and tee times. We loaded all players individual hole scores after each card was turned in and calculated the course statistics by hole for each course after the second round. It was interesting to see which holes were playing the hardest by division. Sorry for the live scoring problems, the course is a little remote and the two courses are very large and cover a significant amount of land and sometimes the hand held radios were not covering it very well, we were reduced to using cell phones to call the scores in, and they were promptly updated when the PDGA laptop and trio would stay connected to the PDGA server. Next year we will need to investigate a better solution and possible the use of re-transmitters on the course.

The three way tie definately caused a frenzy but not because of the act itself as we had planned for a possible playoff, but just that the score card didn't make it to the scoring tent very quickly to allow for verification of a tie. Soon after the score card was received we verified it, issued a new score card for the playoff holes and the Marshall took care of the rest. Like John Duesler said though it was a little difficult setting up the playoff on live scoring and on the fly and we could do a better job at that, but with John even having difficulty with exactly what to do I don't feel too bad about it. We will strive to do a better job next year with the communication of scores to viwers online, and possibly have live scoring all three days!

I get to make a dvd of an event that is obviously so special to everyone involved. I just hope that the 2007 Beaver State Fling DVD lives up to how great the actual 3 days were. I'll try my best.

Can there be any doubt? I have none. This will be a must-see.

Is it available yet?

Jen Padham has fallen off the face of the Earth and has not returned anyone's phone numbers or e-mails. Given the amount of time and money invested (by all parties) I can't imagine what the problem is with releasing the DVD (the last semi-official word was that editing was complete).
