I was wondering how other people handle this. Assuming that the Cali player gets only 1 extra throw per hole, do you charge him one times or two times for a full payout?

Cali pays the same as everyone else, just once.

That is what I would think too, but as I was looking around today I have seen where they pay twice...

For the weekly I run on Wednesdays at Seneca Creek, Cali pays once and throws one extra shot per hole. Schitzo pays twice and throws twice every shot.

Now if you are putting money into the ace pot or CTP pot, you have two options if you are Cali or Schitzo. You can pay once and you have to declare to your group which drive is an ace run and which drive on the CTP hole is for the CTP (if your extra shot as Cali is your drive), or you can pay twice and both drives count.

Sounds kind of confusing when written out, but it is not. :D

This is so funny...some people allow people to pay twice and receive an extra shot per THROW, and some people stay traditional and pay once and are allowed one extra shot per HOLE(which I agree with). It is completely unfair to allow the cali to pay twice and get an extra shot everytime he throws. And don't give me this arguement that the other teams get two shots everyshot, why shouldn't cali....BECAUSE YOU'RE CALI...that's why. Cali was invented to give the odd man out in a doubles mini a chance to win. Hence one extra shot per hole...having an extra shot everytime you throw dwarfs the fact that the other teams get two shot everytime. Getting two looks at the same shot for the same person is 100000% easier than trying to read your partners shot and adjusting your shot accordingly. This double paying cali crap goes on here in Austin all the time and the mojority of the time...the double cali cash's or wins.

I've drawn double cali several times and each time I paid double and cashed....when I'm paired radomingly with some scrub, the chances of cashing are dimished 10 fold. I just can't see the reasoning behing letting them throw twice everyshot.

Jumping off the soap box....

Locally we try to sort into A and B pool players before making teams. If there is a Cali (called Clint here) then they are given the option of paying twice if they are a B player. Players in the A pool don't get an option, they just get one extra throw per hole. This has seemed to work out well here.

Actually, I was just wondering how everyone else plays it.

The way that we play it, the Cali pays one time and gets one extra throw per hole. They earn the full payout, if they cash.

We are getting ready to start up for the season and I just figured that I would throw it out there and see how people treat it. I thought maybe there was some interesting set-ups that people might have.

We tried to make Cali pay double when we started our dubs league last fall. We changed it, it is a bad policy.

Here in North Cackalak cali play's just as if he/she were a two person team, take two shot's and play the best one outside of 30' of the pin within 30' he/she only get's one shot at the putt, and he/she only pay's once.

It does not say on the flyer if the Cali got two throws each lie, it just says they have to pay double.

Right, "Cali" in our area means 1 throw per HOLE. Cali players payed double, but did not get any extra throws. I think 2 throws per lie is pretty much junk, because like you said, they would win every time.

At most weekly random draw doubles in my local area, players playing solo (aka California) get an extra throw every throw just as Doubles teams do. The one requirement is that the California player steps off the lie and pauses before rethrowing.

A few times the question came up about allowing only one extra throw per hole. However the local club keeps diligent records on the winning and second place team each week and it was observed that even when one of the top golfers is the California player through the luck of the draw, it does not automatically guarantee that the player will be one of the winning teams. There are only a few occasions per the entire year, April through October, that a golfer playing California will be one of the top teams. And this is on a mostly pitch-n-putt duece-or-die course where an extra drive and an extra putt per hole should be greatly beneficial. But it isn't.

There is a course just outside my local region that only gives California players one extra throw per hole. The course is a very long one with several pro par holes where only having one extra throw per hole puts the California player at a great disadvantage compared to other Doubles teams. After playing as the California player several times in the span of a few months at this weekly doubles, I questioned the rule to the organizer and was given a terse reply, so I stopped attending.

we have always given the extra player the choice- pay twice for 2 shots on each shot, pay once for an extra shot each hole.

THis is what I have always seen as well. As far as the idea that 2 throws per hole guarantees victory; I think it depends on the type of course that you are playing. If you are at a course with a lot of par 4 and 5's, you would be at a severe disadvatage to have only one extra throw per hole.
