WHY ARE WE HAVING 2 SC POINT SERIES EVENTS THE SAME WEEKEND? THAT DOESN'T MAKE MUCH SENSE. I KNOW THAT ORANGEBURGS WEEKEND WAS TAKEN BY THE HALL OF FAME BUT COULDN'T THEY HAVE SCHEDULED FOR A DIFFERENT WEEKEND? I'D LOVE TO PLAY THIS TOURNAMENT BUT THEY SCHEDULED IT SO LATE THAT I HAD MADE PLANS FOR SATURDAY SO I COULD PLAY SENECA SUNDAY... JUST WONDERING

I agree with Mike, it really sucks that there couldn't have been a little bit of coordination between the Seneca TD and the O'burg TD, but then the Seneca tourney is being run in conjunction with the Saturday tourney at Toccoa, so that would've had to been worked out with the Toccoa TD. What I WOULD like to have seen is the Festival of Roses tourney posted AT LEAST A MONTH AGO! I already signed up for Seneca like a lot of other people even though I'd rather play O'burg.

Apr 05 2007, 11:24 AM
I was suprised also. I am not the TD but I felt compelled to add a PDGA discussion thread about this event so more people could know that it still existed. It has been listed on SCDGO.net (http://SCDGO.net) for a couple weeks. I will be assisting them in any way that I can with the event. People withdraw from tournaments all the time so just make a choice.
I hope to be playing at Orangeburg.

I thought the Festival of Roses coincided with the larger Festival also, but it seems the actual Festival is in May. Seneca also has a commitment of sorts; they are tied in with Toccoa to provide 2, 1-day tournaments on the same weekend.
It's too bad it turned out this way. I see an almost identical discussion going on in North Carolina, where Asheville & Sanford have tournaments the same weekend; Asheville's is tied into their town festival. I think Orangeburg's traditional week was a week earlier, but it was snatched by the Hall of Fame NT event in Augusta.
Few will remember but, in the mid-90s when I started playing tournaments, there were 3 events a year in South Carolina, 2 of which were at Earlewood (Winthrop also held an event; these were also the only 2 courses in SC). You either waited 4 months between events, or hauled to NC or GA.....and even at that, one a month was about all there was. So this snafu is, in large part, a side effect of the tremendous growth of the sport. As problems go, it's a nice problem to have.
It would be nice if there was a system for "locking in" traditional dates for established events, though the NT would still bump a B or C tier. Earlier sanctioning, to get on the PDGA calendar, would also be nice.

Apr 05 2007, 01:48 PM
David is right. This is a "nice" problem to have!! My problem is deciding whether to play one day at Seneca or take another day off from work (I'm scheduled to work that weekend) and play both days at O'burg. I'd prefer to play wherever the biggest participation level will be, but O'burg is not even listed on the PDGA.com schedule yet. Decision decisions......

The really crass thing to do would be to sign up for Orangeburg....if you have a bad Saturday, ditch it and go to Seneca and start fresh. But I would never suggest such a thing.
I originally planned to play Orangeburg this year but, when they didn't appear on the schedule, signed up for Hall-of-Fame instead. I can only play a limited number of events --- there's always work to do at Stoney Hill --- but if I were playing, I'd choose one of the conflicting events this year, and promise to play the other next year.
Of course, all of this "choosing" is from those of us residing between the two choices. I'm sure for everyone in the lowcountry, Orangeburg is much more convenient.
The most interesting effect is SCDGO points. Since they're based on finish, not how many you beat, this will be a bonus chance to rack up on points for the SCDGO series. TWO winners will get 50 points, etc., and the field diluted by the two events.

Believe it or not David, I actually DID think about doing this! But the more I think about it the more I believe I will be attending Seneca, since at least it's a sanctioned event.
On a side note, David did you ever finish your house at Stoney Hill? And when is the inaugral tournament??
davidsauls
Apr 05 2007, 04:11 PM
re: Stoney Hill (off topic)
I haven't exactly "finished" my house, but I moved in 2-19-07. There's still lots of little things to finish. With that, and daylights savings, we can now play and schedule tee-times after 6:00.
Inaugural event, not quite a tournament, was bring-your-partner doubles on the Sunday after March Madness. We had 11 people.
Not sure when we'll have a full tournament. One thought is to have a 1-day on Sunday after the Madness in the future. This would give people a chance to play one, or both, events, as suits them (like Toccoa and Seneca, which I just mention to make this reply peripherally relative to this thread), and camp out Saturday night if they want. I'd prefer a 2-day event at another time. This is the very best time to play Stoney Hill, because we've had all winter to cut grass and work on the course, and it hasn't started regrowing yet. Fall is the next best time, because it's beautiful and dry and, in September, we start catching up on the grass cutting. Either time, the famous winds are at their best. In summer the weeds get ahead of us, though I'm hoping we'll do better with me living there now (see first paragraph, if you've forgotten), and in winter the place turns to muck.
Come on out and visit sometime.

I don't know much about any festivals outside of the disc golf festival that is going down. The dates were changed due to the NT event the normal weekend. So they moved it back a weekend. Just up the road in Charlotte is the Discourse Open. So that makes 4 events that are fighiting for SC players. It's pretty nuts. The Toccoa and Seneca events is crazy. They are 20 miles apart!!! That would be like scheduling a tournament in Charlotte and one in Rock Hill too.
Coordination is getting to be a pain with everyone now wanting to run a tournament. I think that we should all be talking tournaments up to all the non-tourney players because it looks like there is no shortage of tournament space in the near future.

Good to see many options in the SC, GA, NC area. Tourneys conflicting with each other will happen more often in SC. More and more clubs and courses these days = more events. I love the Orangeburg course, in all the layouts. Unfortunately, or fortunately, however you look at it, Toccoa and Seneca are closer for me. Everybody have fun at the Orangeburg tourney.

Apr 07 2007, 11:25 PM
We (Charlotte Disc Golf Club) looked hard at the calendar for the Renny event (as we have the last 2 years). We have the Points Bonanza in June (long-standing tradition), so we did not want to put it in May to get them too close together. Later in the summer is too hot for a grueling course like Renny, plus the underbrush is much more manageable in spring. The fall does not work since the Charlotte Open (A-Tier) and the USDGC consume a ton of time and focus from the CDGC.
You need a lot of daylight for 2 rounds at Renny, so April works well. In April is also the HOF Classic and Dogwood Crosstown and Easter weekend (which Tarheel/Chapel Hill ended up taking). We took the Discourse Open down to a C-Tier so as not to conflict with Toccoa & Seneca which are B-Tiers.
My opinion (and I realize others have vastly differing opinions on this) is that competition is good. If you want good attendance at your event, make it worthy of attracting more players away from competing events to come and play in yours. If we have better events across the board, everyone wins!
davidsauls
Apr 09 2007, 08:47 AM
The downside of competing events on the same weekend is for all those who'd like to play both (or all three or all four) events, and have to choose. Better coordination, including respect for established dates for established events, gives players more choices. The competition that drives us to bigger events is for the players who don't play every weekend, to decide which weekends & tournaments they will choose.
We build more courses....and every course wants to host an event.....or two or three per year....in five or ten years, multiple events on the same weekend, in fairly close proximity, will probably be the norm. Especially in spring & fall.

Camping is available at the lake for a cheap fee. They even have power hookups and a nice relaxing lake to take a dip in after the rounds are done, hopefully not diving for your disc. I will start a thread for the Trophy event this week.

This is unfortunate. But when the TD is the PDGA tour manager, what can you say? I am not in committee with the SC coordinator, but it does ask the question when you fill out the sanctioning agreement "Has the State Coordinator approved these dates (required for B & C tiers) ?"
I guess the answer has to be ??
The UFO/Greenville in August is in close proximity to the Augusta event now scheduled the same weekend.
Maybe the game is just that big now.

Apr 18 2007, 12:32 PM
I have always contacted the pdga and sanctioned the M.M event within the 1st week of January and then contacted all the clubs within a 3 hour drive and let them know of my dates. With the help of all the clubs and by giving them at least 3 months notice, I have been able to avoid any conflicts in schedule. However, Charlotte still put on a 1 day Match Play tournament the same day as my 1 day Match Play tournament....even though I had held mine on the same day for 5 years now and had emailed them to let them know. So it isn't 100% perfect..Just a thought for those planning events...
jnosnevets
Apr 18 2007, 12:53 PM
Well for what it's worth, the UFO tourney may be on the SCDGO website but it's NOT on the PDGA schedule. Had the Festival of Roses gotten the word out via the PDGA schedule like Seneca did, I'd be going to The Burg next weekend....instead I'm Seneca bound.
But I agree that it's TOTALLY screwed up how the Augusta people scheduled a tourney the same weekend as Trophy Lakes. What's that about?????? Isn't there some condition that even "C" tiers need to be separated by so many miles (I'm too lazy to look that stuff up) in order to happen on identical weekends? So now, both tourneys are going to split competitors who'd normally play both. Great job Augusta!!
davidsauls
Apr 18 2007, 01:51 PM
As I read it, separation requirement for C-tiers is 25 miles. Bump to a B-tier, and there can be no C-tiers within 75 miles.
Early sanctioning (so events appear on PDGA calendar), and the courtesy to respect traditional dates and dates already taken and shown on PDGA calendar, would help. According to PDGA tour page, there are 17 weekends that currently have no events scheduled in SC, NC, or GA. Throw out a couple of holidays and a half-dozen traditional events that are not yet sanctioned, and there still should be plenty of available weekends for the growing tour. Wouldn't it be great to fill in the calendar first, before we start doubling up?
We hope to host at Stoney Hill in 2008, and will certainly be looking for a date with as little conflict as possible, to benefit the TDs and players alike.
davidsauls
Apr 18 2007, 02:38 PM
On the other hand.....
PDGA statistics indicate 73 sanctioned events in S.C. and its neighboring states last year. Plus assorted ice bowls and other unsanctioned events. So maybe we do have to learn to share the calendar a little more.
Sitting here in Columbia, centrally located and within a 2-hour drive of Charlotte, Augusta, Upstate, and the Lowcountry, perhaps we should just celebrate our choices.
And, for myself, to wish I could make it to the fine Edisto Gardens course this year, and envy all of you who do.

The best solution for all of these doubling up tournaments and what-not is to have more players play tournaments. If we could bring in more members and have more Recreational players start to play tournaments to get them into the action and find out just how much fun it is on top of the great people you meet and make friends with, then whether there were 4 tournaments in 1 weekend in SC they could all fill up or come close to it. The tournament that should have another one in the state with it on the same weekend is the Earlewood classic, so if you don't get in on time, you have more options...Hell, put one at Chapin and one at Earlewood...Atleast if you're on the waiting list and aren't going to get in, you can hit the interstate and be at Chapin in 30-45 minutes and still have a great weekend of golf at another GREAT course!...just my opinion...if we can't agree who's hosting where and when, then have more people play...bring all your friends, have them play rec...most will get hooked after the first tourney.

Golfers are a special breed. We need complete silence to focus and achieve a state of zen prior to each putt/throw.
We must remember to have fun.

It looks like the original front 9 will be in play this weekend. As of Thursday night the water all dried up.

An InCrEdIbLe place to play...This course will definitely test your mental game...Real easy place to kick your bag...Or Tell your fellow opponents to go F*** theirselves eh Jonas?

We would be grateful if you could print the webpage www.saulsinsurance.com/stoneyhill/challenge.htm (http://www.saulsinsurance.com/stoneyhill/challenge.htm) and post it on the Charleston Courses. If this doesn't come out well, e-mail me at
[email protected] and I'll e-mail you a scanned copy.
So how'd things go this weekend? Weather was near-perfect, but if you got the same winds we got at Stoney Hill Saturday afternoon, the back 9 must have been an adventure!

You sure do have good sportsmanship you sore loser! You just can't stand being beat! and the next time that it happens I won't be so level headed about things. This sport is all about having fun and enjoying the people you play with. If you get beat, so be it! Man up, say good round and leave it at that and don't cry like a little baby and curse at your fellow opponents. That made you look so LOW as a person and you lost a lot of respect from other players who were there that day that couldn't believe you acted the way you did!

Nice to see six women competing....hopefully a trend toward larger women's fields in the future for events in these parts.
Hope next year's scheduling works out a little better, for all concerned.
