The other day someone on my card got an ace. "Great shot!" I said as I give him a 5 buck courtesy payment. Then I realized that everyone kinda stood there awkwardly staring at each other wondering if the other guy was gonna pay also.
Whats the big deal? If you don't pay, oh well, it is not required.
Do you pay or not?
I give a buck for metal which I define as from the basket up. I pay 5 bucks for the ace. I pay whether or not the disc skips in or not. Some folks won't pay on the skip.
What is customary in your area?

we usually pay out for the metal and aces. but you need to announce and get agreement from everyone that wants to do this prior to the round starting.

We always play 51 ($5 for ace, $1 for metal, cage and up). Usually when people from around here travel to tourneys, we announce it when we meet our card-mates, typically after the 2-minute warning. If they don't want to play, that's cool with me. I've heard of some people playing $1 for an ace and $0.25 for metal, especially noobies and juniors, which is cool too.

Just $5 for the ace here, usually. I've never paid anyone for metal. We have a league here that does not have a real ace pool, but if someone aces, everyone that is playing that day has to give them $5 afterwards. I like that.

In California it is customary to pay $5.00 to someone in your group that gets an ace. In tourney play, it is customary to give a $1.00 to anyone who gets an ace that is not on your card.
Most guys man up when they see a girl paying the $5.00/$1.00. I don't have a problem telling some ******* on the card that doesn't want to pay $5.00 that he is a cheapazz tool. At least it avoids the awkward silence. ;) :p :D

Metal Mania. Of course you pay $1 for basket and up and $5 for the ace. It does not matter how it hits. Skip, off a tree, rolling with a jump off a root. They all count if it is your tee shot hitting.
I once cleaned up in a skins match with a couple guys. Playing with a gentleman (lets call him Mr. Bill :D) and his son shows up on hole 8. His son suggests we play .50 skins and Mr. Bill asks if it is ok if I am in on it. Son agrees and off we go. I proceed to take every skin but one over the 11 holes and got an ace to boot on hole 14. I turn to both and ask "You guys are in Metal Mania right?" To which they replied with the affirmative. Mr. Bill's son then goes on to say "Yeah. Skins. Whose genius idea was that!?!?" :o:D

Funny story- I was playing at the Lumberjack 2 weeks ago with Al Schack. He was having a good round, then took a 5 on a not-so-tough hole. But that didn't matter, he aced the next hole. BUT the hole he aced was the 50/50 hole. He would've taken home aroud $500 for both the ace and 50/50, but he didn't get into either $5 pot. So I still owe him $5.

Aye, $5 for an ace on my card/in my group at any time, and crap to anyone on the card/group who doesn't want to pay. :)
If I am at a tournamnet without an ace pot, I give a buck to anyone who aces during the tourney per the SoCal tradition. I don't pay the buck if there is an ace pot, but I still pay the $5 if there is ace on my card.

I'm from NorCal.. And we always pay $5 if you witness the ace or are in the group.. Even if you are not in the group you pay $5 if actually saw the disc go in (honor system). You pay a buck if you didn't see it and are not in the group. We also play 51 sometimes at non-sanctioned tourny's

51/50 here.
$5 ace, $1.00 chains, $0.50 for metal (no skips).
A few of us that play together regularly have agreed that anytime we have a casual round or a tournament round where two or more are present, it's on (only those that are at the event are in). Nice little addition if you ace with several of the group present. :D

I've never had an ace in my group - at least not since I've been competing. But I've hit metal a few times. Only once (in KC, not here) did they offer to pay the dollar.
But I'll give Luke Butch credit - he's a man of his word. At MSDGC, we step up to the VERY tough Hole 11 Elements at Maple Hill. We were very low down on the cards. He says "$20 to anyone who 3s this" It wasn't agreed upon everyone, meaning it was just his offer. I managed the up-shot of a lifetime and a 40' for the 3. Sure enough, he takes his wallet out.
Now THAT'S class.

I have paid the $1 several times and recieved it several times. i never expect it though.
However, when an Ace pot is involved, no $5 have I ever seen change hands.
Most guys split larger ace pots. At Texas State Championships a few years ago. Barry Wayne Pierce called before the round that he would give everyone on the card $20 if it won the $1000 ace pot. We all Agreed and sure enough, he hit the only ace in the tournament winning $1000.
He actually gave all of us the $20, even when he had another split with someone else.
mmmm, how many ways can your split a $1500 ace pot?? I guess we will find out in September :D

Only if the group agrees before the round, which we rarely do. I'm mainly wanting the witnesses to sign the disc more than gaining money. Ace pool money is only important to me when it's an actual tournament, sanctioned or not. Casual play, I just want the signatures, but so long as everyone agrees to a certain amount before the round I'll agree if I have the cash on me.

In January a guy hit a $100 ace in doubles, and gave his partner $50 of it. The guy threw the ace first, and I was saying I didn't think the partner should have gotten any of the money. It would have been a different story if the partner parked it and given free run to the second person.
The following week I get partnered with the guy who didn't get the ace, and after about an 8 hole discussion I revealed that if I were to hit an ace I wouldn't split my $100.
He continued to chain out on the very next hole, I almost wet myself.

So if you win the tournament, do you split the winnings with your partner?
You do? Then EVERYTHING should be split, IMO. CTPs, ace pots, everything. The only exceptions I would go with are side bets that your partner chose not to participate in.
A team wins & loses together.
So who here man's up for the black ace ???

To clarify our local rules (51), here's a breakdown of what you win from, or lose to, each person:
Ace = +$5
Basket and Up = +$1
Black Ace = -$5
Anything manmade (park benches, cars, light poles, signs) = -$1
I've chained out on a black ace before and paid everyone in the group $1. I've also nailed cage on one hole for +$1 and hit a park bench 3 holes later for -$1 to be square with the group.

Having only recently started playing DG again, I can see that the ace payout has become much more standard. I hit my one and only ace in 1992 during a club round in Melbourne Florida. I was visiting and didn't know they had an ace pool. No money was offered, but I did win a free disc for CTP.
The guys I play with locally have agreed that 5/1 is the norm. Someone also once mentioned the black ace rule after a really bad throw. I've hit metal twice in the last couple months, but both times were with my teen son and I didn't have the heart to grab my dollar from him...besides, it started as my money to begin with.
My opinion on those not paying: If the group didn't agree to the payout prior to play, I would have no problem with someone not paying...especially if they are fairly new to the sport. However, I don't ever want to see them taking money from someone for their metal/ace. Also, if there is an official ace pool, I don't think I would pay an additional 5/1 UNLESS the majority of my group paid (I succumb to peer pressure quite easily).
Personally, if I see an ace (and there is no ace pool), I gladly offer my $5. And now that I know the $1 for metal is common, I will make that offer also.
Lookin' forward to pocketing some Lincolns very soon (and I don't mean pennies).

Always play 51, ace fund or no ace fund. Rules are simple. Nothing has to be designated before rounds. You either play the game or you don't. If you don't you don't get $5 when you hit one so tough luck. Everyone here plays 51, even the casuals. As long as it is basket up, and on the first drive, then congratulations.

I play 5-3-1 ($5 for ace, $3 for chains, $1 for metal) whether it's a tournament or not. In fact, if my friends are on another card in a tournament, I'll even pay for a shot I didn't see.
But what burns my biscuit is when guys in my group don't pay up for an ace. I aced during the final round at this weekend's Wide Open, and a guy on my card told me he'd pay me $5 for the shot (there was no ace fund). But after the round, the guy (from Southern Kansas) said he'd have to see if he had $5. When I saw him again later, he said he didn't know if he had $5. Then I never saw him again. For one thing, who travels four hours from home without more than $5? What, did the hobo ride the rails back to southern Kansas? What a cheapskate, not paying me for an ace probably very few people deuced that day!!!

First of all. The dude you are bashing is my buddy, and was my ride to and home from the tourney.
As for not having $5 he wasn't pulling your leg. He used a credit card the entire weekend. Unless you are able to accept debit/credit then he was unable to pay you.
I did think it was pretty dumb when you came up to him at a different course and started asking him for money.

Not having a wide selection of aces to brag about (I have 1), the whole ace pot and paying off for an ace is a foreign concept. I just don't enter ace pots and I wouldn't expect anyone to pay me for hitting one. I would expect them to help me back up because I'm sure I would faint if I ever hit another. ;)
I've been playing for a LONG time and I hadn't heard about the 51 until a few years ago. Apparently it is more popular with people who hit aces with some regularity. /msgboard/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

In our neck of the woods, 51 doesn't seem to be as popular as other parts of the country. The only time I've ever played it is playing skins, in a casual round, or if someone mentions if before the round and we agree. I have not ever witnessed an ace and then handed over $5. Not because I'm a jerk, but because it doesn't even occur to me. It's not a part of disc golf that is ingrained in our brains out here in the mid-atlantic region like it seems to be in other regions.

My general POV on aces:
When I get one, my only hope is it was a meaningful ace. That generally means an ace on a tough but not hard hole to get a 2 on, shooting a round that I'm enjoying that's relatively low pressure. I love getting an ace during leagues. Our league pays out a $25 check to ya. At leagues, I give $1 if I see the ace. During tourneys, I'll pay cash if I see an ace and we're enjoying ourselves on the card. Example: I saw an ace on beauty 4 during the AJ Opener. I paid out the guy $5. I won't always payout, however. If I'm in the ace pool, I'm less likely to pay, or if we 'as a card' aren't enjoying ourselves. The only time I've ever been payed out (besides ace pool money) was during a doubles event my first year playing. Aced flip city 1a after my girlfriend parked it. I got cash from a bunch of people during the awards because there was no ace pool. It was also my first ace during something other than a league event.
