Hear ye, here ye. This is to announce that the Arlington DGA is alive and well and planning to revive the Fahrenheit Fling this summer on July 21st and 22nd. In the past this has truly been an endurance test of the highest order, something we hope to change a bit this time around.
After much deliberation we have decided to stick with 18 holes. We will play the regular tee pads each morning and the short tees in the afternoon. We're hoping this move will make the heat more bearable. This will also assure that the ace pot will be more vulnerable. ( sound tasty? )
I'm also getting a vision of some rope and an island green in my mind. Wonder what that entails? Or maybe an entire fairway the width of a disc golf bag. :D
Anyway we're hoping you put this one on your schedule. Here's looking atcha.
p.s.
this is a C tier event. hoping to have some fun.

I'll go ahead and put out a call to all of the locals that have said they wanted to help the ADGA out, this is your chance ;). If you guys come out of the wood work more people are sure to follow, especially your friends.
Skip and I talked some about this tonight and I'm actually looking forward to this. In years past the Fling has always been a tournament I could do without, whether I was playing or not. This year should be different and I look forward to seeing all of you.

Just pulling up a reminder. Things are looking very good for us right now and we anticipate a good event. I'm soliciting any feed back on things to do to make this the fun time we're hoping for.
I believe we'll be having the players meeting about 10:00 am to allow a leisurely 10:45 start and a finish at about 1:30 to 2:00 just as the heat is starting to hit. We'll take a long lunch break and start the second round about 4:30 as the evening moves in with some long shadows and cooler temps. I'm thinking about a possible distance competition of some sort at about 3:30 with prizes for each division.
We won't have the luxury of all day on Sunday to play two rounds again so we'll start at 9:00, finish about noon, take a hour or so and start the last round about 2:00.
None of this is in concrete yet so please give me your thoughts. Everyone is welcome to have a voice.
The Funkytown Flyers Club will be glad to chip in some $$$ for the event. Would you prefer adding that to the Open division? Or chippin in on the am's ?

Well Dave, it's a "C" tier event and entries have top limits. I don't mean to be unfair but I'm used to hearing these young guys talk alot more money than I'm used to so I just wanted to make it as good a pay out as I could. I've gotten a lot of inquiries about registration and entry forms as expected. I would like to ask anyone wanting to play that they get me their name, pdga no. ( if applicable), and division you wish to play in and I will get you on my list. Being a "C" tier event, I don't expect this one to fill, but if it starts to get close I'll post it on this board and announce it at the minis.
If you're on my list and it hasn't filled, you can finish your entry on Friday after doubles gets started at 2:00 or on Saturday morning until 9:00.
I have changed the Adv. entry to $40.
Fridays doubles will be staggered start beginning at 2:00 until about 6:30 at the latest. I've also decided to allow three divisions: Open, Adv. and Rec. Open is $40 per team and either Am div. is $20 per team.
You can post on this forum to get your name on the list or e-mail me at arlskipshot1@yahoo.com, or come see me at the minis.

I've been discussing the island green concept with one of our top pros who has played the USDGC and have decided not to do the island on #18, but I will tape off a fairway/ green on #17. I think this will be an easier thing to pull off without interferring with the flow too much.
Come check it out. I think you might be amused and you will definitely be challenged.

Chris, an island green is only bad if you let it get in your head that you will mess it up. You are definitely a top caliber pro that should be able to play a smart shot when needed instead of another gorilla hyzer.
Lee, we agreed that shooting at an island green that wasn't almost fully visible would not be fair to the player. I think #4 would have that problem same as #18.
Pat, I will simply be putting out a taped boundry that will define a fairway and a green area on #17. Only the Pros and Adv. will play it as OB outside the tape. There will be a certain carry to a defined fairway that will play a little smaller than the wide open shot you have there every week. Should you miss your tee shot it will be one stroke and a re-tee. Should you miss the second also, I will have a drop zone for what would be your fourth shot. Don't worry though it won't be an extremely difficult tee shot, but your next shot to the basket will have to be performed well.
I'm doing this to break up the same old same old, not to make your life more difficult. It will present a satisfaction of accomplishment to everyone that plays the smart shots well and gets his three. Maybe we'll put a bounty on a two in the Fling!!!

Veterans already has small greens, making it difficult to incorporate the "island" green.
380-450' USDGC/Players Cup holes are certainly reachable by most in the field but require balls of steel and near perfect control of the disc in order to have a chance at a duece. Veteran's has a few perfect holes where a little bit of strategically placed survey tape would make the normal hole not so normal....mentally. :D

Sadly, Discraft needs 4 weeks for SuperColor printing so we are not going to be able to use it for The Fling. Rest assured that it will be used for either the Club Championships, or the VPO.

Think that OB lines are a great Idea and should be used on the entire course.
Just don't like island greens. At Texas states a couple years ago they made a state of texas out line and I was closer to the pin than barry was but he was in ElPaso so he had the easy two where I had the easy four.
Also think we should play all sidewalks and beyond OB.

Yeah, Craig, it's been too long.
We tried the USDGC type set up on hole #17 this morning and the response seemed positive for the most part. I enjoyed it as I was one of a multitude of 3s, but we did have a few 5s, 6s, and even a couple of 7s. We also had one two to take the bounty by Dave Kinter.
I would like to take this moment to thank Don OConnel, Clay Brummit, and John Miauro for their work on the flyers and tournament discs. Also thanks to Gilbert, Red, Richard, and Willy for helping me with hole #17 today.

we also had an eight, and plenty of double-circles.
this concept is cool, but the fairway is overly difficult when combined with having to tee-off two times before proceeding to the drop zone and facing another dicey shot into a small green area. i would move to the drop zone after one tee shot. another idea might be to remove one side of the fairway rope. that would loosen things up while still putting aggressive shots at risk.

It was a fun and challenging hole. I'm glad I saved my mulligan for that hole (though I gave the stroke back when my jump-putt sailed past the chains and landed off the green)! Rather than remove one side the fairway rope as Pat suggested, I would recommend widening the beginning section of the fairway for the initial landing zone....perhaps closer toward the tree line on the right side? I witnessed several shots which ended up OB near that corner of trees which divide the two fairways (for short & long pins). I do like how the fairway has a bottleneck design closer to the green. Good stuff, Skip! It was good seeing you again...

Jul 09 2007, 02:13 PM
I think to make it a risk reward type of hole, which the USDGC tries to do, we should make the OB closer to the wood line to give people the option to go for the green or just lay up and take an easy three. I don't think Kinter would have gone for the green if he did not have a muli in his pocket.
I did see somebody go OB on his first shot take a muli go OB third shot went OB chunked a thumber from the short tee and two putt. :D
sandalman
Jul 09 2007, 02:57 PM
widening is fine also. the biggest problem is that there is no real risk/reward. just risk. the narrowing fairway is the opposite of risk/reward, especially for a hole that only gets birdied maybe once or twice a month. the length of the hole does not make for good risk/reward, altho the rope does make it tougher.

Jul 09 2007, 04:20 PM
I AGREE WITH SANDALMAN...IF THERES NO REWARD AND ONLY RISK WHY EVEN DO IT!!!! ITS LIKE SOME OF THE SAFARI HOLES IN THE VPO WHEN ALL YOU CAN DO IS 3 OR 4 AND THERES NO CHANCE AT TWO SO EVERYONE SCORES THE SAME. NOW IF YOU HAD A WIDENED AREA TOWARDS THE MIDDLE OR EVEN AT THE END OF THE FAIRWAY...THEN THAT WOULD GIVE YOU MORE REASON TO GO FOR IT!!!! BUT A FUNNEL DOWN THE FAIRWAY???? ALSO, HOW WILL THAT PLAY FROM THE SHORT TEES? I LOVE THE IDEA OF AN ISLAND GREEN!!! THATS ALL THE VET NEEDS IS SOME ADDED DIFFICULTY LOL!!!!!

Jerry gets the concept. The closer to the basket the narrower the fairway should be, and moving the tape closer to the trees would make the "go for it" shot less risky. As it was the gorrilas had to carry over OB for about 360' to go strt at the basket. Very risky, but performed to perfection, it would get the birdie, and I believe that hole gets birdied more than twice a month. I've watched 53 yr old Willy do it as well as many others. I do agree the green could be a little bigger, and not quite so far to the front of the landing zone.
arlskipshot1
Jul 10 2007, 02:35 AM
By the way, I value all the opinions voiced on the integration of the USDGC concept to toughen up the game. I love the idea of using a man made OB line instead of just going longer to make things harder. The work of the master of design, John Houck, not only uses length, but he forces you to look at playing for position in alot of cases and I think this is the way to make the game a better competition. Just my opinion, and I wholeheartedly encourage anyone to step forward and take on the responsibilities to run these events.
Sincerely,
Skip Maxwell #6922

I've gotten word from Ben Poole that registration for the Fling will be available on Titledisc.com in the next couple of days. If you are wanting to use a credit card to pay your entry you will need to go to this site. Also if you just want to get it done and out of the way this is the way to go. I will still honor my promise to take entries from everyone on my list the weekend of the event.
I'm trying to get the names of the people on my list posted on the Tour info for the event. Being ancient and somewhat computer illiterate this is not as easy as I hoped. I expect to remedy this soon.
At one of the minis I announced my intention to give the Open winner an entry to the VPO. With a little more thought we have agreed the best thing we'll be able to do is offer to the winner $5 for every player in the Open div. towards his entry in the VPO. Sorry for any confusion and I hope this doesn't change anyones mind about entering the Fling.
Thanks,

My plan, Pat is to play #17 that way all weekend, and I'm pretty sure that they play the double tee off before going to a drop zone at the USDGC. Like I stated earlier, I will make the hole a little more generous with the landing area, and only pros and adv. will play the tape from the concrete tee, and everyone will play it from the short. If you, Claydog, and John M want to sway this collectively I will abide by any decision that we as a group should make.
Also, I would like to point out to all players intending to play Adv., should you decide to bump up to Open for this event and win it, the ADGA will sponser your entry into the VPO in the Adv. division.

Yeah Eric, I too miss the original layout. It was special for me when Jerry Gotcher showed up this weekend and in asking me a question about the holes he referred to #7 as #15. We have players now that don't know what the original layout was.
One day I want very badly to hold an event to showcase the first course design at Veterans, one round from regular boxes and one round from the championship boxes on the front ( which we get to see for the most part at the VPO each year) and the old back nine championship boxes and pins on #15- #18. Those holes at that time were monsters that led John Houck to outdo us with Round Rock. Why I remember the time Craig Leyva and lil Mikey Sayre were.....(drift)...... and then the time Scott Stokely and Ken Climo battled Barry Shultz in the cold and.....(drift)...ahhhh yes.

its risky off the tee even if you choose to lay up. an upshot from the early part of the safe area is still a tricky shot. there is risk on a layup off the tee due to the upshot and risk if you go for it. there is no real reward, cuz it requires a great shot for a birdie anyway and the risk of a layup is almost as great as the risk in going for it. alternatively, i could see a big fat landing zone maybe 100 feet diameter to the right of the short tee.... then no fairway at all, but a true island green using a generous island (so that you could easily 2-putt on the island). that might make a nice links style hole and could clarify the risk/reward but that skinny little fairway we played sunday just makes a very chancy/lucky hole. just imo, i applaud the fact that you're playing with the ideas.

I just hope we have an open field this year. For some reason not many open players show up for this great event. This was my first event that I played in the DF/W area when I moved here in 2003, when I was playing Int and it was a blast.
I do agree with Pat on #17 there is no risk reward with the way it was set up. There should be a large landing area half way to the hole for those who want to lay up, then a tighter fairway the closer to the pin, and a larger green so chain outs and missed putts don't go OB. I like the idea and am not knocking the effort put in. If you need any help setting up Fri before the event let me know.

Chris: Hellman is my only Open player on my list at the moment, but I've tried to interest Adv. players to bump up with an offer to be sponsered by the ADGA into the Adv. div. in the VPO if they win the Open div. at the Fling. I don't know what kind of luck I'll have since they can't accept the money. It would be kinda like doing a trophy only div.
I've spoken to a couple of homies that have said they may play in Open.

skip, you could do a sidebet thing that has worked in several recent events, including the Canadian Open, which was an NT.
they had people pay for Open, and offered entry into another division (masters in their case) for an additional entry fee. a masters player could also enter just the masters field of course.
maybe our advanced players would like the chance to play open for bragging rights and an outside chance at the VPO entry, and also to play adv for a real chance at cashing/winning that division.
the CO was even allowed to report all the side action as event purse, which really boosted the event's status in the eyes of the Association.
anyway, just a thought... not really sure if it is a good idea or not

I think I get the idea, Pat, and I like it. Am I right to understand you as saying that if an Adv. player wanted to pay $85 ( $45 for Open and $40 for Adv. ) then he would be eligible for the entry offered for winning Open AND for any prizes he might place for in the Adv. div.
If this is what you're suggesting then I would have no problem with anyone "going for it."

Here is an interesting question.....
Do the ratings count twice ?????
What card do you play on ADVANCED / OPEN
Very interesting concept
sandalman
Jul 12 2007, 07:55 PM
the card issue is the biggest discussion on the format. at the CO they put the players on the Open card, since the Masters was after all a sidebet.
ratings only counted once.
skip, yes, that is exactly how it worked.
if you want to consider it, it would be best to talk to David Gentry at the pdga office asap. it was used at the CO, but i dont know if it needs special approval or not. if you wnat help with office contact, lemme know and i'll get the details for ya.

sullivan and hughes took sidebet cash. hammock did also, but it harder to see cuz it didnt make his total earnings higher than anyone who beat him.

Due to the time frame, though, I will reiterate you can sign up with me on Friday afternoon between 2:00 and 7:00 or on Saturday morning until 9:00. I won't be able to take credit cards. If at all possible, we're asking you to use cash, but if you must use a check it needs to be made out to me, William Maxwell, due to a problem with transferring the DBA.

I think the revamping of the tape made the hole a lot easier, and the object is to make the players approach the hole different from what they're used to. For that reason I'm going to find a little more compromise between the two of us, Pat, and make it just a little more of a placement hole.
As for the re-tee, I would like John to help me out. I believe in the USDGC, which I'm wanting to pay tribute to, when you miss a tee shot you are required to re-tee one time before going to a drop zone. Meaning you would take your third shot from the same tee you made your first shot from and, should the re-tee not be in bounds, you go to a drop zone to take your fifth shot. Help me with this one, John, and we'll play it the way that you think we should.

Hole # 17 at the USDGC is the only hole where you are *required* to re-tee up to 3 times.
All of the other holes @ the USDGC are played just like any other OB line, take it where it was last IB with a stroke penalty. Now understand that sometimes people choose to take an agressive line by throwing directly OB hoping that by the time the disc is at rest that it will be resting IB. If that's the case and the disc never comes back IB then a re-tee happens, but only b/c the last place the disc was IB was at the tee box. :D
Also, just for the record, anytime a player throws OB they have the option to play it where it was last IB with a stroke, or they may choose to rethrow it from where they are with a stroke penalty(basically stroke and distance, but sometimes this is the better option.)
sandalman
Jul 16 2007, 02:30 PM
forced reteeing is overly punitive considering the nature of this tournament. great for the USDGC, not as great for a C tier... imo. (disclosure: i 3'd the taped version both times)

Okay in the interest of speed and less confusion we will be playing it as described above. When a player throws his tee shot OB, he will have the option to play another shot from the tee with a penalty or go to the point where the group agrees it was last inbounds and mark within a meter of the OB line with the penalty.
The 17th at the USDGC is a unique hole with alot of notoriety, and being an island "green" of less than 200' they play it differently. Our 17th is an island "fairway/green" so I won't carry it any further than this. It will not be an mandatory re-tee. In the same since, though, I can't say to go to the short tee either. It must be simplified to going to the last place the group agrees it was fair.

Hey Jerry, we did get a brief shower, but it felt great and wasn't too much of a hindrance only lasting 5 min.
I tell you what, man, when I brought up the idea to revive this event I thought we would be doing good to bring in 50 people. At the start of the week I was resigning myself to accept that it may only bring in 40, but Claydog and I have been doing this whole thing old school, baby, and in letting people sign up this morning we opened the door to a huge surprise of 80 players. This was no problem, though, for me ( frozen caveman TD ) and my compatriot Dawgboy. We did everything the old way without any of those electronic computers to frighten and confuse me and make me run away in fear. Everything was on time and ran pretty smooth. Tomorrow we'll be trying to do it all at a faster pace. I see no problems. ( knock on wooden keyboard )
I'll get some of the leaders posted here in a little bit.

Phillip , you set the bar early. Your game is there. Just put it all together. You told me to birdie everything else after my boge on #1 - I tried. Enjoyed having you on the card. It was fun. And Thank's.
Are you coming to the Vet?

Would bet those ratings will be going down. Don't think a 44 from the shorts is 1000 rated if my 44 from Ardmore is 989 and the course is way harder than the Vets shorts. I could be wrong, would just prove my point that the rating system makes no sence.

Pat,
You might try mine. It is usually within 10 points and somtimes as low as +or - 3.
Will there be round ratings for Rd. 4?
Dang, my 2nd rd dropped 135 ratings points from my first. That's gotta be close to a record!!! good grief
