PDGA, Microtel Inns & Suites Launch Disc Golfer of the Week Program

http://www.discgolferoftheweek.com/graphics/dg_of_the_week_logo_thumbna.jpg The PDGA and Microtel are both pleased to announce the launch of their new Microtel Disc Golfer of the Week program (http://www.discgolferoftheweek.com). This effort is designed to celebrate all the dedicated PDGA members who have helped disc golf keep going and growing from week-to-week, and not necessarily the best players. With that theme in mind, the Disc Golfer of the Week award will be given to the current PDGA member (i.e. 2007 dues paying member) who best personifies the spirit of our great game. And that spirit is one of community, friendship, environmental stewardship, personal independence, and recreation.

What makes this award program so exciting is the dedication to disc golf that Microtel Inns & Suites has provided. Their significant underwriting of the program will allow the PDGA to provide a weekly $100 cash/merchandise voucher prize for 30 weeks. Moreover, the 30 weekly winners will then automatically qualify for the Microtel Disc Golfer of the Year award worth $1000 cash or merchandise voucher. This award will be announced at the Rock Hill, SC Microtel during the week of the USDGC.

Nominations will be open from Saturdays through Wednesdays beginning this Saturday. Please make sure that you read the Program Guidelines (http://www.discgolferoftheweek.com/program.html) before submitting your nominee.

This program, though long overdue, will help celebrate all the talented and energetic people who have helped sustain disc golf and the PDGA for work during the last three decades. Good luck to all nominees and thanks to Microtel Inns & Suites (http://www.microtelinn.com/golfdisc/) for their support.

Since the Microtel DGer of the Week is only available to current PDGA members, I guess you could add this to the list of benefits Terry :-)

Thanks,

Who selects the winner each week?

jdflyer
Mar 07 2007, 05:10 PM
I will be selecting the winners from the list of eligible nominees. The criteria will depend upon how well the nominee fulfills the "spirit of disc golf," and that includes a spirit of community, friendship, environmental stewardship, personal independence, and recreation.

It may be the person who has been running random doubles for the last ten years and considers that their baby, or the person who stops their record-setting round to help deliver a baby in the parking lot.

It may the player who nails two aces on the back nine to win an event by one-stroke, or the player who brings stroke victims to the course once a month to help them rehabilitate.

Much of what we are trying to do here is have many of the stories told about all the selfless work that is being done by PDGA members in our sport. Therefore, a major part of the award will be based upon the strength of the story supplied by the nominating party.

I'm sure this will not be an easy task, given the number of worthy PDGA members. Will it be perfect...no. But it is the process we'll be testing out for the first year anyway.

Thanks,
John D.

that is a really cool thing! but most importantly is the effort that Joe Anttila put into trying to save a life. how many of us would have seen what happened, gotten a chill, then continued to drive on to make our tee time?
joe is a wonderful guy with one of the biggest hearts.
im just sorry your trip had to be so emotional.
it takes an amazing person to do what you did!

This week's nomination process is going to stay available until Thursday at mid-night (EDT). I had trouble putting the nomination form online this week, so we'll allow some extra time.

Our last two winners are a real credit to the sport, and we look forward to continuing the recognition that our grassroots leaders so much deserve.

Nominate Someone Today... (http://www.discgolferoftheweek.com/nominate.html) for this weekly award.

SPECIAL NOTE: I am going to request that, if your nominee did NOT get selected, please resubmit their name for the current week.

ALSO...pix of your nominee would be greatly appreciated to help add some zest to the site.

Thanks!

Does this apply every week? Or, if I nominate someone, is the nomination good for a few weeks?

Actually my full nomination was as follows:

Bob Graham exemplifies true professionalism in every aspect of disc golf. He goes above and beyond in welcoming guests to his home course of Rutgers (often runs across the course mid-round to help travelling players to the next tee); volunteers hours of his time helping new players develop proper form and mechanics; sacrifices his practice time to assist TDs in events he's attending and playing before rounds, during lunch, etc.; runs multiple highly enjoyable and generous tournaments each year at Rutgers; and is just a pleasure to spend time with either on the course, for a beverage after a round, and travelling over a "road trip weekend" to a tournament. His dedication, generosity and joy of the sport is addicting; it's no wonder he wins the "Spirit Award" at nearly every tournament it's offered!

Thank you B.O.B.

I can honestly say that I would be nowhere nearly as involved with disc golf as I am now had I not met Bob and been inspired to share our mutual love of the game.

Show up for the Jersey Jam B-Tier (Am Jam 8/11, Pro Jam 8/12) and see what I mean!
