I've only got one shot at it brotha, when that child is born my world will change and I am sure disc golf will slide down another rung on the ladder. I am sure I'll have to miss a few along the way, besides you're a more seasoned golfer than myself and your game is just fine. I'm no bother to the Big Wave! See you this weekend brotha!
When I tried to register as an Intermediate, PayPal is trying to charge me $42 instead of $32. Also, there is nowhere on the PayPal form to put my PDGA #.
Can't wait to represent NC State in this tourney. ;)

Traditional OB Rope?
Added holes?
halton
Mar 06 2007, 04:08 PM
Intermediate button should be fixed as soon as our webmaster can get to it (sometime before 5 today).
As far as OB is concerned, I spent $35 on orange string last year, thinking about cutting it back to around $10 this year, stringing only the holes where safety is an issue. I am hoping to have the same holes #19& 20 as last year, will let you all know ASAP.

Mar 06 2007, 04:14 PM
I think that the only hole that needs any string at all is hole 3, just b/c the island green makes it a make or break hole, when without the rope is at worst a 3 for most players.
Hole 4 is long enough and with OB left, in my opinion, doesn't need OB
Hole 6 is good hole without the OB as well.
Just opinions.
Looking forward to the tournament!

Hole 3 will be strung, discs far right are in the path of hole 2 and blind because of the pond berm. The rest are tbd.

Most of the OB last year was good. Definitely didn't like it on hole 4. Its already a tough hole to get but w/ the OB it was pointless to go for. I liked it much better w/ just the creek OB to the left. That should save you a bunch of $ for that string too. Just my opinion, but shared by almost everyone I played w/ last year.

I would prefer to play without any o.b. on hole 4 other than the creek on the left. Hole 6 doesn't need anything artificial to make it tougher on lefties, it already is. I know something needs to be done on 3 and 8, but trust your judgement. Thanks for the effort

The players packs this year will include a DX Big bead Aviar and a DX Ontario Roc, both of which will be custom stamped.
I also realize that a number of folks prefer not to have discs with Tar Heels stamped on them. For this reason, I am planning to have box of regular DX Aviars and Rocs available for trade out with the Tar Heel stamped players pack discs. These trade outs will be on a first come first serve basis. So get to the course early on Saturday for check in.

I got a super nice translucent green Discraft Crush with a Tarheel ghost stamp on in as part of my Am winnings at the THH a few years ago. I found the perfect use for it a couple weeks back. Hello Halton,
Hey Bro, when will 17 and 18 be in for practice?
halton
Mar 21 2007, 01:39 PM
For tournament purposes, the holes you are referring to are #19 and #20. I would like to have them up full time, but due to the ropes courses and other facilities, these temp holes can only be installed for the tourney. I hope to have the pads and basket positions marked the entire week prior to the tourney so that people can practice throw the hole without the baskets.
I only ask that no one throw these holes if there are any people in the field or in the vicinity of any of the ropes course apparatus.
The baskets should be up for practice all day on Friday April 6th.
Also, there will be random doubles on Friday April 6th, probably at 5:30.
All OB should be strung by Thursday.

I agree completely Eddie, the problem is that the ropes course(Carolina Adventures) is a private entity that generates its own money, while the disc golf course does not. Furthermore, the course was installed by Carolina Adventures, and has been threatened to be pulled if people continue to throw holes 1-4 when the ropes course is in session. We've had a few people go agro on the ropes course facilitators on the past, which is the real reason that old #17 and 18 were removed.

Actually, holes 1-6, 8, 13-15 and 18 still play at least partially on what used to be Chapel Hill Country Club fairways. The CHCC was a 9-hole private course that was moved away in the mid 70's (for obvious drainage reasons) and the University bought the majority of the land, some of it going to the Mormon Church. After years of building tennis & volleyball courts, ropes courses, softball fields and parking lots, only about 5 of the original fairways remain intact.
Davis Love III probably never played the CHCC, he played Finley Golf Course as a Tar Heel. Great golf course and open to the public!

Not sure which hole it is, however, it is down a valley, and back up to the crest of a hill, basket sitting beside a tree. Now to me, that is the best and prettiest shot to watch in all of Carolina. Beats out hole 18 hickory, but just barely. If I could only throw it far enough to be able to watch my shot before it lands. UMMH

I am hoping that I will not have to turn anyone away from this tournament, if need be, I will give up my spot.
All baskets will be in the tournament position by Monday April 2nd (except #19 and #20). There will be a flag marking the basket position for these holes all week; baskets will be in place on Friday. String should be up by friday morning also.
Random doubles will be Friday evening at 5:30, meet at hole #8 (General Administration parking lot) $3 entry, $1 ace pool

Yeah, I played that one... takes the hole from a three with a chance for a 2 (and maybe worse if I screw up) to a three with a chance for a three and a little bigger chance of screwing up. I kinda like it for a casual round...if I had my druthers I wouldn't play that one in competition, but it certainly won't keep me away either.
For people who have trouble clearing the treeline reliably from the regular pad, I think the main thing it does is make the hole more annoying. You pretty much trade the chance of getting stuck in the crud for the possibility that you can't aim a high second shot well enough to make putting range, so I don't anticipate the scores being much different there. Hazard's prediction: Noticeably less score spread for intermediates, slightly more for advanced and even less for pro.
(Disclaimer: I do not know what I am talking about.)

Yes, this hole (#5) will be intimidating and frustrating for most of the intermediates. Along with #13, these will be the only 2 holes listed as par 4 on the official layout. It will give smarter, more conservative Am's a chance to make up a stroke or two on the more reckless players. I plan to trim the hedge line at the gap a little lower and open the gap up for the lay up shot. There will be basically two layup options:
1. Throw down to the opening of the gap, the risk is being too far left or right to line up the gap with the basket and too close to throw hyzer or thumber over the hedgeline.
2. Throw short to just the bottom left side of the hill, leaving plenty of room to hyzer over the hedgeline to the basket.
There will be a handfull of deuces on this hole over ther weekend, my projected scoring spread is:
Pro:
score % of field
2 : 7%
3 : 60%
4 : 25%
5+: 8%
Adv.

Great golf course and open to the public!
so who designed the disc golf course?
Sorry Dave, I overlooked your post:
A polehole course was developed in the mid 90's following the basic layout of the remaining fairways from the CHCC. In 1997, Mike Lyons from OEC/ Carolina Adventures consulted Carlton Howard about baskets, and the Disc Golf Foundation ended up getting involved with Innova to provide half of the baskets. A good friend of mine, Brendan Moore, did an amazing amount of work to install a lot of the teepads, many by himself. Over the years, the dg course has been rearranged to make room for softball fields etc.

What are ghost cards?
MTL21676
Apr 02 2007, 05:46 PM
Basically its like a group that kinda starts on a hole but kinda doesn't.
Let's say there is a ghose card on hole 1. This means there is 2 groups on hole 1 to start. The group on hole one plays the hole, then the second group (the ghost group) plays hole 1. Then the group from 18. Then 17, etc etc etc
larrywhitson
Apr 02 2007, 05:52 PM
Knappy, a ghost card is basically a card of golfers without a hole to start on.
So, you start 20 groups on 20 holes and the 2 ghost groups start on hole 1 as soon as the hole 1 starters finish the hole but before the hole 18 starters play hole 1.

2 spots left!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Rocky,
Take 15-510 N to Chapel Hill, immediately after the exit for 54 W you will cross over a bridge. Take the exit to the right immediately after the bridge following the signs to UNC. This exit loops around under the bridge and onto Raleigh Rd. Take Raleigh Rd up the hill (~1/2 mile) to the first stoplight and take a left onto Country Club Rd. Take your 3rd right into Carolina Advertures Outdoor Education Center (big wooden sign with green mailbox) . Follow drive down to parking. Hole #1 is below the bathrooms building.
**For doubles on Friday night @5:30, we will be meeting at hole#8 (UNC General Administration parking lot) To get here follow the same directions as above except:
Immediately after looping under the 15-510 bridge, get in left lane and take your first left at the UNC General Administration sign, follow to back parking lot. Hole 8 is on your right

island greens are just that islands. your disc has to come to rest on the island in bounds. they are tricky but that is how it plays. if your disc lands on the island then rolls o.b. then you proceed to the drop zone and comense to emptying your bag until a disc comes to rest inbounds within the island. ask Kevin Burgess about this one he had alot of fun with it last year.

Actually this is a condition that the TD needs to cover during the players' meeting. For the Colorado Open, TJ Lawrence makes a few island holes and always specifies that if your disc CROSSES INTO the island and then lands out of the island, play it where it crosses. I'd recommend you check with Halton on this one.

Dave George pretty much hit this on on the head. Any tee shot that does not come to rest in bounds on the island (shaped like a giant Tar Heel, in order to counteract and overpower Rocky's special anti-tarhell sauce:D) will proceed immediately to the drop zone (Do not pass GO, do not collect $200).
Once you are at the drop zone, you will continue throwing from the drop zone until your disc comes to rest in bounds.
Once your disc is established in bounds, if you were to putt and go OB again :( , then you will take your lie from the last point in bounds(ie. where the disc went OB at).
I want to imphasize (and will do so again at the meeting) that the island is marked by the string, not the creek or anything else. The flags are there to aid the tee box view of the island boundaries.
If fact, there is a small sliver of OB short of the pin that is right of the creek and in the "arch of the Heel :o" that will really frustrate some players this weekend who throw what seems to be a short, conservative, safe shot just to the right of the creek.
I recommend that you keep your cool after going OB and make sure not to putt OB from the drop zone.

Hey ladies and gents...So during the first round today I managed to lose my ipod. Luckily (from what Ive heard) Kozak, Wiggins Jr, and Capt Kirk found it and it ended up at tourney central. However, someone else thought it was theirs and took it. SO, if anyone runs across an Ipod Nano, White, in a black leather case, please please return it. If needed I can put out contact info.
Or maybe you guys can keep your eyes open for it.

Sorry Donnie, I can't ride the boat with ya on the Ghost hole. It gets more an opportunity to play. I'm for that. I only wish players could be on time. Player check in , means check in. Players meeting means a meeting for players. A TD has 2 options, 1. after check in time, scratch off those that haven't checked in, and fill with standbys. Or search for players to assure they are present. Once that is accomplished and determined, begin players meeting. Players meeting are informative, to discuss issues that may arrise. Searches for players not checked in, this would be brief, search for players on waiting list, I don't think so. You're either here (at the players check in/meeting), or your not. I would not punish players whom have pre-registered (by being on time, and registering ahead), or are present. Ghost cards allow more players, and I'm for that, in a timely manner.
This was a great tnmt, great course, congrats to the winners, and a special congrat to the Cupcake for stepping up a division to compete at a higher level. Thanks to the Tar Heel crew for all the hard work. A course that kicked my big butt.See ya next year, or Azelia, or Sanford Slingers Spring Sling.

Im all for more players as well rock... add more holes. Split the tourney to Pro and Am. There is no reason in the world to purposly create a backup. It sucks enough when it happens naturally, but when you see 20 ppl on a hole waiting to tee off that is a little much. I got home at 10:30 last night. Thats crazy.
Captain
Apr 09 2007, 10:54 AM
Rock,
I'm sorry but I have to disagree with you about ghost cards. You were not on a ghost card all 4 rounds, I was. It slows down the flow of an event and unnecessarily extends the length of the tournament day. We started out every round having to wait on the group in front of us and then had to wait on every single hole.
We finished on hole 5 every round. Because we were a ghost card we were the last group playing every round and the fact that we finished on a hole that during some rounds had a 5 group, 45 minute back up made it even longer for us. On Saturday we did not finish our round until after 7 PM.
Another problem with ghost cards is that it adds additional work when it comes time to totaling scorecards and shuffling the leader board.
I know that Matt worked very hard to get this event running however here are some major glaring errors that should never happen:
Saturday morning players meeting should not be 45 minutes late. Don't tell me to be there at 9:30 AM and expect me to be happy about waiting 45 minutes for the players meeting to start. I don't care what the excuse is. If a player hasn't signed in by 10 minutes BEFORE the players meeting call out their names. If they don't sign in immediately give their FREAKING spots away to the players standing their waiting to get in.
Dont tell players they will have an hour for lunch (Saturday) and then give them only 40 minutes. There were multiple players (including some in my group) that had less than an hour for lunch on Saturday.
Don't post a start time after lunch of 1:30 PM (Sunday) and then not have the leader board out until 1:35 PM and then bump the start time to 1:45 PM. Most of us need some warm up time before the round starts.
Don't add holes to accommodate more players.
Don't add ghost cards to accommodate more players.
Dont take 2 hours to complete the awards ceremony. We finished the final round at 4:30 PM. The awards ceremony didnt finish until 7 PM Sunday evening.

I really wanted to go to Sheffies after we finished Saturday night. However, when you don't finish your round until after 7 PM it doesn't leave you with a lot of time to drive home, eat, shower, sleep and drink beer before you have to be back and do it all again.
Matt did a great job given the circumstances.
However, those circumstances could have been significantly improved if there had not been added holes and ghost cards.
Here are some suggestions to keep the field to 90 players:
Limit the field to Adv and Pros only and possibly host a large monthly for Intermediates only just before or just after the sanctioned event.
Set aside a predetermined number of spots for Adv and Pros with a very limited number of spots for Intermediate.
Set the limit to 90 and stand firm by that limit.
Pick your best 18 holes and play those all 4 rounds.

I really liked those holes myself.
However, the combination of the additional holes and the ghost cards made for excessively long rounds.
You could keep 19 & 20 and easily skip holes 16 & 17 and still play the 18 best holes out there.

Just thought we'd have some humor there. :) Actually, Dave Gentry and I have talked about where ghost cards are appropriate and this is our conclusion. First, the course should have several legit par 4s and/or 5s on it such that it can handle more than 18 groups anyway. Second, the ghost group should go on an easy par 3 that's right after a tough par 4 or 5. Essentially, you don't want the ghost group to have to wait too long before throwing. And, you don't want the group behind them to be able to finish the hole they are on before the ghost group tees off.
I'm actually trying to do this in my recent course designs where I have an easy 3 after a par 5 in the flow, specifically to allow this option for events. We've got two places this can be done on the Steady Ed course at the IDGC (13 & 14 or 15 & 16). All five courses at Highbridge have this setup in case it's needed.

Alternating long holes with shorter holes follows logistically from ball golf. It's rare to see two par five holes in a row in ball golf.
I love pro par four and par five holes in disc golf, but not when they are all strung together, if it can be helped. Changing hole#9 to a deuceable par 3 at the Little Lehigh Parkway course for Pro Worlds 2005 broke up a murderer's row of four pro par four holes in a row and was a welcomed change. For the recreational layout, hole#8 was broken into two shorter holes and hole#9 was again extended to the long position which still makes for a brutal stretch of holes 9-11, especially since hole#11 is severely uphill.

yoo calls this a foot fault everytime. seeing that the disc is 2-3 feet out of my hand and im a total of maybe 2 inches off the ground, even if it is a foot fault (which i dont think it is) i think it is an impossible call to make accurately.

This was basically the logic I used for the placement of our 2 ghost cards. Both followed the two longest holes on the course (both par 4). In addition, there is ~400 ft walk to #6 tee from the #5 basket.
I think our biggest problems were:
1. already had 20 holes
2. 83 amateurs, including 36 intermediates, all playing one of our most difficult layouts
3. cold, windy, gusting, unpredictable conditions
Speaking of conditions, there has been a consensus agreement among players and myself that the ratings for this years tourney were low. Is there any adjustment to be made for the conditions? The course played a good 5 strokes more difficult this year, probably 1-1.5 strokes more due to the course being lengthened and added difficulty ,3.5-4 strokes added due to the conditions.(Compared to 2006)

Low Ratings, I agree. Windy, understatment, Intermediates had not contribution to the problem.

The ratings automatically take weather into account because actual scores are used to make the calcs. If players are shooting 5 shots worse on average, the course SSA will be calculated roughly 5 shots higher for that round. If the exact same course layout is played in more than one round, and one round has particularly windier conditions, we suggest naming that as a separate layout in the course layout area of the TD report. Otherwise, more than one round on the same layout may get combined with our new process. For example, "Course A" is played in R1 and "Course A - windy" is played in R2.

Sorry Rock,
I wasn't trying to blame anyone, just saying that a tourney at a difficult course, overcrowded with less experienced competitors, playing in difficult conditions is perfect recipe for excessively long rounds. If anyone is to blame, it is me for adding ghost cards.

Did anyone birdie hole # 3 every round?
I got it 3 out of 4 rounds.

I respectfully disagree with this.
Changes from last year....
3 - Green much bigger and drop zone closer to basket (easier)
4 - No ob in fairway - went from a layup hole to a hole everyone went for (MUCH easier)
5 - Lengthened (tougher)
7 - Lots of trees cut from fairwawy (easier)
8 - no drop from casual water meant people in the water sometimes had shorter putts for 2 (easier)
10 - basket in shorts (easier)
20 - shortened (easier)
While the conditions were hands down tough, the course was probably a good stroke to two stokes easier than last year. However, the condititions made it a little tougher.
