I'm surprised about the Paw Paw courses. Seems to me they had been running about 63 or so the past several years. When I checked it out, looks like there might have been bad weather the first day in 2006 if you look over the several SSAs for the same layout. They still stay on the list if you give them 64ish values.

We received approximately 5" of rain from the remnants of tropical storm Ernesto. The first round on Saturday morning lasted five hours. :(

That should be in the "temporary setup" list. Some people order up yellow ropes, or temporary baskets or tee pads to boost SSA. Others order up hurricanes! :o :D

well I wouldn't know how to answer that really.
The baskets have always been portable and just about every time I go the layout is different.
Last time I heard it was just 9 holes now.
Either way, it is def. just 18 holes.

I recently called Still Water Farms. The course is under new management, and it's only 9 holes now. Anyone can play, though, but it's Pay-to-play at $5 a day.

Jeff, I think Tyler might belong in the temporary course section. It is really only for a few weeks before and after the Yetter that the pins are all in C. Even though it is a permanent course, you can't just roll in and play the Championship layout anytime you want.
Jeff_LaG
Apr 23 2007, 05:09 PM
I think the point is more that the former list is permanent courses and those with permanent polehole positions that the baskets can be moved to at any time, if the course pro wanted to move them there. The latter list is for temporary courses played with portable baskets on land that doesn't normally have a course such as ball golf courses, or ski resorts.
These are really just informal lists and we had to draw up some rough guidelines somewhere. According to your definition, Renaissance, Borderland, Warwick, and Paw Paw may then be the only courses on the former list. They are the only places where you can 'roll in and play the Championship layout anytime you want.' Many of the other courses have shorter pin positions that are used for normal play, and these layouts will be subject to whatever pin positions the course pro chose for that week.

Gotta get a shout in here for Charlotte's Web layout of Hornet's Nest. This is a permanent course with permanent baskets for both the original layout and the Web layout.
We played it twice in club singles events last year. That yielded 30 rounds of data from players with ratings. SSA = 70.7 for that (calculated with the online calculator). Problem with that rating is that things were opened up a bunch after the first time we played. Using only the 2nd round of data (16 players), SSA = 69.91! Smaller sample, but probably more accurate/realistic.
Since then the course has been manicured some more. Expect an SSA of 69 for its first official PDGA action coming up at the Points Bonanza on June 15. Woops - just forgot that 2 of the permanent holes (6 & 7) are not going to be played due to park construction.....will have to wait to get an official SSA. Bummer.

Jeff, Campgaw Reservation alternates between the shorter par 3 Winter 'gaw and the par Mighty 'gaw layout depending on the season. It's currently in the Mighty 'gaw layout, which yields a par 68 I believe. Previous measurements had hole 18 a par five at about 1300 feet down the skihill!!!

I'm well aware of that. This informal list covers the highest SSA obtained on that course in a PDGA tournament, which was in 2005.

I'm just letting you and the folks know it's in the ground now under this layout, not "can only be played when set up for an event" as you said previously.
It's a course that's well worth you time and efforts to drive out to and play.

But it's also in the ground for only one month - I saw somewhere that it will be taken out at the end of May. This informal list will not be updated monthly.

Doot....
As far as I can calculate, the Mighty Gaw is a Pro Par 71.
I'll see if i can convince Scott Howard to convince the county to maintain the ski hill so we can keep the Mighty Gaw layout in the ground for more than one month.
For any of you that has never played the Campgaw course in Mahwah, NJ in the Mighty Gaw layout, it is well worth a visit. It is the closest course to Manhattan (i think 18 miles as the crow flies) and located on a small ski hill. It is a fun, challenging layout. Heavy smokers and those otherwise aerobically-challenged will find an 18-hole round to be quite a workout, as you have to walk up the ski hill 3 times in an 18-hole round. But the design, fun factor, and incredible views make this the ultimate billy-goat round of disc golf. It is unlike any other layout or course i have played in my 33 years playing disc golf, and probably my favorite layout anywhere.

I'd slide it into the list but i'm too lazy to figure out tables on this board. The Byron Big D course hosted a sanctioned singles tournament in October solely because I wanted to know what our SSA would be. It was 70.2.
When I designed it I had intended that it be 72, but having played it a few times, I like it the way it is. Next year's only tweak will be to hole 8, probably.

Fred Salaz and the Idlewild gang acquire those cylinders from a concrete testing company in the area. My understanding is that these concrete samples (100's, if not 1,000's) are sent to these testing companies where they randomly test a small portion of these cylinders. Once the testing is done, the concrete samples are disposed of or donated to individuals/businesses who request these items. Fred has literally loaded (and unloaded) tons and tons of these cylinders, by hand, into his truck for transportation to Idlewild to create some of the nicest greens in game of disc golf. :D
