I know there is going to be alot of opinions as I'm using the word "best" but over the weekend I played ina tournament where the wind never stopped blowing and it was blowing hard between 30-40 MPH. My headwind driver was a Star Firebird but it didnt deliver the way I thought it would. The wind picked it up on skip shots and pushed it back all the time, and sometimes it was just being pushed around in mid-flight. I saw this going on with some people TeeRex's as well. I have discs for all other situations, but not headwinds so what disc(s) should I try in order to beat the head/crosswinds??

I played the Anasazi Open Saturday in Albuquerque, NM. It was crazy windy (even by my standards ;)). The wind blew around 30 - 40 mph for the whole first round and most of the second. I picked up one of the new MAX from Innova between rounds, and I've got to say it worked a little better than my Monster.

I love watching people play in the wind and they think that a Pred, Teerex, or FB will be enough disc and then it just turns over and tracks right withought ever coming back. The I decide to throw a Spirit that flies straight for 80% of its flight and then turns left even it the stiffest winds.

SPIRIT

They must be throwing beat up Discs.

I think you also need to examine your throwing technique if you're having trouble in the wind. A skip shot (after the skip) is going to put the underside of the disc into the wind just like a beginner who throws with the nose up. Need to focus more on keeping the nose down into the wind. The Bonopane grip can help with keeping the nose down as one option.

I use Teebirds and Starfire-Xs for moderate wind, and a Firebird for stupid heavy winds. Thrown them all with a little bit of hyzer, they should flip to flat and not turn right unless you're in the middle of a hurricane (or your technique sucks.)

Spirt hands down. I have a beat spirit to heck spirit that I can hyzer flip and I still trust it into a head wind.

Max "D" in a max headwind,use a "Max"!

Deano...

For distance I would use the MAX. It is the furthest flying disc I've thrown into a headwind. The Spirit is very good as well, as mentioned. Mostly its the thrower though, not the disc that makes for a good drive in extreme situations. I've seen really experienced players throw "flippy" discs into headwinds successfully because they could throw them with a bit less speed and use the wind to pull their hyzer release flat. Headwinds really expose any hint of off-axis torque in your release as well.

Good point.

Long live the Predator! if you want some D with the stability.

The Z-Flick is nice too.

If you want a disc that's so overstable that it won't even turnover in a tornado then, hands down, a Z-Xtreme. Good luck throwing it over 350' though. :D

A red or blue star TeeRex for most situations and distance.
A Ch. Firebird for crazy wind and for accuracy.

Predator.

Mutants . . . . there's a couple in this neighborhood too -- are they winning a lot of events elsewhere? Around here they seem to not only be a different lifeform physically but also mentally .. .. is this common among mutants?

how does a z-pred compare to a z-flick?

The Predator is a better disc and will be way more predictable into the wind from what I have seen. The Flick has a way of flipping way over when you don't want it to and since it doesn't really have a dome it won't flex back.

I gotta agree with Justin and Matt. The Spirit is a sure fire disc for headwinds. I have one E-Spirit that I will only pull out of the closet on days where the wind is 40 mph and above. It is sick overstable and will still hold a hyzer line into the wind.

Spirit or the speed demon work well into the stongest of headwinds, also the demon is a great midrange disc in strong headwinds.

I was using a Star Max last weekend in 25-30 mph headwinds. Worked like a charm. BTW, don't pull a Beast out of your bag by mistake. It dive bombed straight out of my hand and rolled about 200' down a hill....away from the basket.

I would recommend a Spirit or the New Rage when it is eventually fully released from Gateway.

For something slower, the Hybrid from gateway is very good for the wind as well as the Demon Midrange for control upshots in heavy wind!

What about the best TAILWIND drive? I didn't have it today. My Beast or Roadrunner just was not cutting it. Part of it was operator error.

Z pred is my favorite headwind driver...BUT i do have a nike spirit that my friend and i were throwing into a 50 mph headwind this weekend in tulsa and it was unaffected by the wind while my predator was flipping.

tailwind.. SPECTRA baby these things will fly forever.

S Inferno in a tailwind = my distance record.

Headwind distance I liked crushes, First run X avengers, Z avengers, Starfires (X).

If its blowing too much for a heavy SOLF (more than you think they handle well) then i disc up to an X pred or even a Z pred. when it gets windy enough to throw any pred, I wont be throing for max D as much as fairway placement.

for a tailwind I threw my Raging Inferno DT farther than I have ever thrown any disc in any situation this weekend and it was on a low line drive type of throw. It just kept floating and floating. I outdrove a 365' foot hole and had only a couple of times been over 325' on flat ground before in any conditions.

I agree!

150 class DX Wraiths are my distance drivers. I carry several in various stages of wear.

I switch to a 170 Star Wraith for windy conditions and shorter flex shots.
