First, what division do you play. Second, do you prefer one or two (or more) day tournaments?
I play advanced. I personally would like to see a few more one day events locally (within a reasonable drive) because the main thing that kills my ability to play out of town is the travel expense of a hotel. What is the reason to have two day events at single course tournaments?

I play Open and I hate one day events (although they benefit me b/c I'm not a top pro).
They are much tougher to run as a TD (having to figure payout during lunch rather than saturday night) and around NC have less attendance b/c people don't want to travel to play just two rounds.

1 days seem popular in the upper midwest.
Does a 1 day win mean as much as a 2 day?
In New England, one day events have become the norm. And events filling has also become the norm. the two day events seem to take too much time out of our busy lives.
Although if I lived in the south, where life is nice and slow and relaxed ;), two dayers would be better, imo.

on the rare occasions where i get to play i play pro masters.
i prefer one day tournaments if they're close to home and 2 day tournaments if travel is involved.

The nice thing about one-day tournaments is you can split the field and then your tournament workers can play. It is much easier to find tournament workers when they know they can work their off day and play on the other day.

that is true- the ams one day, pros the next model is something we have done for several years here in spotsy and is now catching on around the area. also allows for ams to double dip should they choose to.

First when I get to play, I play Pro Master or Open depending on the field.
When I play I like either 1 day events and 3 day events with assigned tee times. I would love to see all the majors go to 4 days more like the PGA.
When I run events, I would rather have 2 or more day events. I saw someone else say this and agree that a 1 day event for the TD is more hectic, cramming everything into a few short hours. As soon as you get started, it seems as though you are once again sorting scores and everyone wants their payouts so they can leave. During a multi-day event, you have plenty of time to get everything together before the end of the last round, or final 9.

Here are the stats for 2006. I counted the total number of events including doubles and X-tiers that were either 1 day, or 2 days plus in each state. I calculated the ratio of 1 day to multi-day events assigning a value of 50 for states where all events were 1-day and zero if all were 2-day. Pretty dramatic differences among states with the upper midwest and northeast heavily 1-day oriented and the south plus west 2-day oriented. Interesting seeing the difference in bordering states of WV and VA versus KY, NC and TN.

Here's how the states rank from those exclusively favoring multi-day events at the top versus those exclusively favoring 1-day events at the bottom. A ratio of 1.00 means the state had an equal number of each in 2006. Three states had no sanctioned events - NH, VT & RI.

I play MPM mainly now.
I have 3 kids under 7. I wil not give up an entire weekend to play DG. I will travel up to 3 hours to play a 1 day provided the course is a great course (ie Hippodrome). I will consider possibly play 2 day events in town - that way the fam can join me for lunch and I can see get them out of bed and put them to bed.
If I had discovered DG while single, I would have absolutely loved 2 days and would have played at least 2-3 events per month. .....and I would probably still be single. :D
One format that I like since we have the courses to do this here in Charlotte, combines the pro's and con's of both. FriZZak Open started it and Discourse Open continues it. Saturday is Original Layout (par 58) followed by Gold (par 70). Sunday is just Gold (is a short day due to no lunch break). This works well for me and family priorities.
You could also do this with an 18 hole layout and 27 hole layout made up of an additional 9 temporary holes if your park has the space for it.

I have also heard a lot of people (married guys mainly) singing the praises of the Points Bonanza - 4 1-day C-tiers (Thu-Sun) at which you can rack up a lot of PDGA points. Thu starts at around 1pm, so you can take 1/2 day off work and make it out and then you can play either Sat or Sun. This format is an absolute bear, however, to TD and administrate.

One thing to note about the stats is that perhaps more than half of those 1-day events in the Upper Midwest are 2-days for the TD because divisions are divided between days so there's only a 1-day event for players in a specific division.

I have a kid so basically have stopped playing tournaments because I cannot take a whole weekend off since pretty much all tourneys in NorCal are two days. A few years back some folks organized the Bay Series -- a series of one day tournaments at Bay Area courses with prizes for the individual tournaments as well as overall points. It was very fun and made it easy for people like myself to participate. Hopefully it will be revived.

Chris Himing did pretty well running several 1 day events per year here in Texas....with the final being a sanctioned 2-day event. If its close, I probably prefer 1 day events. But, I enjoy either kind

I like both I like to play in two days more, but I like the convenience of one days. Two days are obviously more fun . One days are cheaper in just about everyway and allow you to do the other things that need to be done on the weekend. I wish that there were more one day PDGA events during the winter. I know it is difficult to schedule winter tournaments. But man I have been going through DT's lately.

Here's a map that shows the ratio of 1-day to multi-day events in each state. Dark blue states are those who have almost all 1-day events with the color transitioning to the dark red states that have almost all mulit-day events. The white states are evenly split.

excellent map!
i prefer one day events myself. two days are nice also, but the cost of staying is usually so much and finding a decent place can be tough in rural areas.

BTW, producing maps with MS MapPoint software is another PDGA service. They bought it for their "stats guy" to create maps like this one to make it easier to visualize a variety of numerical issues that impact disc golf. You'll see some other cool ones when the Tour guide comes out in time for the first NT.

can you make us a map of the average distance traveled per event by state? that would be really interesting. i would guess the bigger less populated states would have much higher numbers than the more densely populated east coast.
ck34
Jan 31 2007, 04:21 PM
That's way more complex. But I already have done a model for future Worlds bidders that forecasts how many Am or Pro players might be expected at a future worlds location based on distances members traveled to the previous two worlds. At some point, I will work my way down into lower tiers for a similar analysis and forecaster.

Depends a bit on distance.
Over 3 hours away---2 days. If I travel that far, and have to stay over anyway, might as well get as much play in as possible.
1-3 hours away---1 day tourneys are great because I can get commute early, play the tournament, and get back home.
Locally---some of both. 2-day tournaments give a chance to recover from a bad round and play with a lot of different people....but 1-day events make it possible to squeeze more events into a busy schedule.

One thing that might improve attendance at 2-day tourneys for the 6-month sweet spot in daylight saving time would be to start the first round at Noon or 1pm and play 2 rounds into the evening. That way you would only need 1 night of lodging. The way we do it now, it usually costs you 2 nights lodging for a 2-day event up to 3-4 hours away and maybe no nights lodging for 1-day events. Seems just more cost efficient for players.

That sounds like a great idea to me that is a big factor for me for traveling to tournaments. I decided to go to the Lexington Open it was worth the two nights. But I decided to not go to the Disc n Dat because I didn't want two two night tourneys in such a close proximity. I am sure both will fill up anyways so it really doesn't matter but it was the first instance I thought of that your example applied to me. I know that these may be too early in the year to be able to tee off much later but at some of the other marginal tourneys that would be nice.

I would like to play more 2 day tourneys outside my state. I certainly have the time, but I do not have the means to both pay an entree fee along with food and gas and hotel. It racks up too much $$$ at the moment, so I would definitely love to see more one day tourneys. I would gladly travel to my surrounding states if there were some 1 day tourneys within so many miles.
