juff, pretty tone will be attending all festivities the weekend of the classic including entertaining everyone at the peninsula and will also be playing in the intermediate division. i have decided that the lowest round of all the gangsta's and trim's and sauls's will be sleeping with pretty tone in the hammock outside by the lake.......hey, hows the hair!......how's the hair!

coral's room will be available along with dad's house next door and plenty of tent room on the point.

also it would be cool if you guy's could arrive on thursday and we could go play stoney hill early friday and then doubles at earlewood. my brother's chris and david have got the place looking good with a full 18 ready for play.

d-real will be hosting hold em at his new mansion bachelor pad, equipped with real velvet table and a pool table with a stocked bar...so anyone wanting to lose some money, plan on going to darrell's house saturday. D-real's house is about 10 minutes from the peninsula and in the direction of earlewood so it's quite convenient.

More people should be chatting on here about this tournament. Sooner or later you're going to have to send in your entry fee a year in advance to get into it or earlewood going to have to somehow put more than 18 holes on their 12 acre course!

They added a hole for me 3 years ago. It was a nice gesture and I can't thank them enough. It was a cool hole too, over by #17 with all the pavement OB. Team Chuck will be living at Earlwood in March it looks like.

The story, for those who don't know, is that Travis Sauls has annually invited visitors to crash at his place. His place is a very small house with a large yard on Lake Murray, with plenty of room for throwing discs, and far enough removed from neighbors to not disturb anyone. Last year about a third of the field slept there, on sofas, floors, and outside (presumably in tents). Consider that Travis is the consummate party animal, put it all together, and this is what you get.

Though not to speak for Travis, but I suspect this will sooner or later evolve into a full-fledged player party. I suspect anyone can join, because I doubt Travis is sure who's there, anyway.

As posted above, Mike's original post was wrong---they haven't been mailed in several years. They are generally prepared around February 1 or slightly earlier, and (1) posted on the websites, either www.columbiadiscgolfclub.com (http://www.columbiadiscgolfclub.com) or www.scdgo.net (http://www.scdgo.net), (2) e-mailed to everyone on Dave Cannon's e-mail list, and (3) a notice published on this discussion board, either on this thread or a new, official one.

There's no online registration, and the tourney fills in a 7-10 days, so it's an Oklahoma land rush to get them in, by mail or in person, to the TD.

As many times as I play Earlwood it still gives me trouble posting a good score. Matchplay aside, Earlwood is tough for me. Everything in Chucktown is so flat, it is a serious adjustment.

I have my check and envelope ready to hit the USPS, when the time is right of course.

All registrations are by mail to Ed's home. He works regular hours, and picks up mail in the evening. My guess would be that his mailbox is about to pop right now, with mail sent Friday & Saturday arriving today. He'll get information to Dave Cannon, who's usually pretty quick about getting it posted.

Having played them all, I can attest that Earlewood has 50 times the number of trees (with 1,000 times the number of nick marks), 5 times the elevation, and is 2,000 times closer.

I'm sick about it! I was worried about being gone on the weekend that we move into the new building and so I waited too long.

I saw it was at 67 yesterday and have my registration ready to be mailed today but checked first to see the list... 90!! Wow! That WAS quick. :(

Not ready to move up yet Chris but I will soon... Played Earlwood with David Wheeler and Rick Stepp this weekend and had a blast. Ed Garris came over to say hello just as David drained a JLS on hole 18 for an ACE! That was one of the prettiest shots I have ever seen. Should have saved it for the tourney Dave!!

In a full tournament, there's not much we can do about the backup. A couple of times we've had spotters, which helped a little, but they're hard to come by.

In the fall, when we're not full (S.C. Championships), we were able to alleviate it a bit with the use of empty holes---starting groups on 18, 17, 16, but leaving 15 empty, etc.

Perhaps Wheeler would give lessons on throwing straight and encourage everyone to stay out of the woods. I know Earlewood doesn't offer much shule and everyone seems to throw in there when they get the chance, but if they'd just hold off for a weekend, we'll make it up to them with plenty of opportunities in October at Owens Field.

By the way, I have petitioned to make beyond the creek O.B., as we did once before, which occasionally affects #3, #12, and #13, but especially #10. Don't know what the verdict is on that, though.

(I should disclaim here that I'm not terribly involved with the tournament this year, as I'm rather tied up at Stoney Hill, but TD Ed Garris and club president Dave Cannon aren't on the discussion board, so I pass along any information or misinformation I may have).

That's one of the classic Earlwood experiences ... during that long wait, watching who does what while dodging discs, and trying to keep your own mind on throwing the disc where you want it to go, not into one of the approximately 5000 trees, or the parking lot on 17, or the road, or drifting off into the shule on the left on on 18, or turning it over and throwing it into the fairway of 10, or ... or ... or .... any of the other options. Its a test of the skills and patience!

It is my understanding that this consists of entries Ed received after the tournament filled. He has not contacted all of them to see if they wish to remain on the waitlist, or just have their entry fees refunded now. The list could shorten if people ask off, and in fact has already shortened as one entrant had to withdraw due to injury.

Of course, for those who live close by, you may show up at the tournament with the chance that (1) some of the registered players won't show up, as almost always happens, and (2) most of the waitlist will not either, as many are from further away.

Finally, the reminder for any who don't get in, that there is another opporunity to play Earlewood at March Madness, our unique one-day match-play event, on March 24.

Earlewood is an easy place to shoot a 44 and just as easy of a place to shoot a 60. The best way to play Earlewood in my opinion is to "Not to try too hard". When you go out to Earlewood and TTRY to make things happen, they never do. Just go out there and play smart smooth golf. The birdies will come, I PROMISE. Also for a note, Don't TTRY and throw it too hard because on hole 3, you'll 9 time out of 10 hit the first tree...remember be "SmooTTh"

well the simplicity of 14 is what makes it a good hole.

Almost always a head wind - the timbers around the basket that make you get it to the pin.

It's not an OMG hole, but its a good hole.

sorry messed that one up a little bit.

as I was saying, Number 14 was not on one of my top 500 greatest holes in disc golf. To me, it's the most uninteresting, boring holes at earlewood.

I agree with Robert, as I find every hole at Earlewood interesting, in its own unique way. #14 is uphill (more than you think---look back down from the basket to the tee), so that a 200' holes plays about 270'. Low shots are stopped by the landscape timbers, which have been moved back toward the tee about 4' recently to make those putts slightly more difficult). Ace runs that hyzer out at the end can slide a good ways down the slope, sometimes landing where the birdie putt is pretty tough; if you hug the right side to avoid this, or simply griplock, you'll hit a tree or bush and it's bye bye birdie.

Not one of the 500 greatest, but a good hole, nevertheless.

One of the unusual aspects of Earlewood is how many holes have legitimate, multiple routes. Holes 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 8, 10, 12, 17 can all be played differently depending on the thrower's skills, the swirling winds, and the judgement or lack thereof of the player. Very few courses feature this aspect.

This weekend is just practice for the match play anyway. Team Chuck invasion is launching Friday.

I have been pouring over the MM rules the past few days and I think I've found an exception to rule #10990

rule #25164 states if said past Am winner is attending the Bowling Green Am championships the week after the next year's MM, said winner can play Am again instead of playing Pro and turning down cash (if he can win two rounds) and wasting 25 bucks.

hmmm...

unless the rules have changed this year, a amateur player can except cash in a pro event and still play am events as long as his player rating is below 955. However, he can not attend the AM worlds and must be declared a pro and pay the pro PDGA membership fee.

however, I do understand your position and wish you the best of luck. I have designed a T-shirt for you to wear with a bulls eye on it and "Defending Champion" in bold letters. If you win this year, I will update the M.M Rule book to include "The Wheeler Petition"

David Sauls (co tournament director) has informed my that I can't make you play pro. That it would be some kind of infraction or something.....

I wonder if we can get approval of a special Earlewood putter? Standard weight, standard plastic, but square.

Not that it wouldn't roll at Earlewood....but probably not as far.

Also suitable for use at Lake Olmstead.

I used to think that softer was better, especially on the vintage baskets at Earlwood. But I am not so sure anymore. I'm going try a little of both and use what feels right. The bottom line on these baskets is either layup, properly, or put it in. If you bounce off the top or bottom you get the rolls.

I love the sound of those heavy Earlwood chains, classic.

No glow doubles this year. It was decided to revert to a standard, random draw doubles at 3:00 on Friday, for those who are there to practice the course and want to do so with a little competition and money on the line. I believe this will convene at the shelter between #11 & #16 baskets. Darrell Lambrecht, who runs our weekly doubles, is in charge.

Looks like a pretty good forecast---no rain, highs around 60. Rain is forecast for Thursday night / Friday morning, but with all the hills Earlewood drains pretty good. Only place it may affect is between #2 basket & #3 tee, which might be a bit soggy.

Have you tried a "Brick" putter at Earlewood? Since we don't have any hills at all here in Charleston, I've never had a putt with a Brick actually roll. I wonder if it would roll on a proper hill, or just collapse??? I'll bring a Brick or two this weekend.

I don't know about all the righty hyzer stuff, I throw righty hyzer on 8 or 9 holes out there. I still think that if you can't make the disc move both ways you are going to have a more difficult time scoring at any course.

Coral will be holding a clinic Friday on how to flick and righty hyzer 400+ feet for anyone who is interested.

windy? oh yea, from every direction. I predict a hugh headwind on 9, a nice head wind on 15 (perfect for putters) a Crosswind on 16, and the Earlewood Swirl on all others.

Thanks to everyone who came and helped make it a great tournament.

Thanks to Travis, who didn't come but nevertheless helped by scrounging up a bunch of sponsorships for a local-record added-cash.

Hope everyone enjoyed the swirling winds for all 4 rounds. Look at all those scores in the 50s near the top of the Open Division---on such a simple short course! (Did the wind not blow when McRee threw? Looks like he was the only one who wasn't affected. What a performance---down 4 after the first round, won by 20).

haha I was tied with him after the first round and he beat me by 28.

I don't know if its good that I was tied with a guy who won by 20 at one point or if its bad that I was tied with a guy who by 20 at one point. :D

WOW way to ace a blind hole buddy. did you actually get to see it go in or just hear it slam chains? i am pretty sure it is blind but not sure if you can get a peak with it being winter.

he didn't see it but I did.. I was fortunate enought to witness 3 aces and 3 near aces...(sort of) I was in the group with Jonas when he aced #6. Later, in the same round I hit chains on #11 but it fell out. In the 2nd round I saw Brian hit chains on #2 while I was waiting to tee on # 4........ During the 4th round, I was waiting to tee off on 5 when #13 was aced. I'm pretty sure the group didn't know it. Later in the round I watched Ed Garris hit chains on #18 and fall out.....and finally (during the same round) I was walking up the #1 fairway when #2 was aced.

I'm pretty sure the aces on #13 and #2 were in the 4th round but they kind of run together in my head....but I did see 3 aces and 3 near aces in 4 rounds........

oh yea, and I took my first pro cash thanks to Tradd. It was a good weekend

Tradition.

Plus, I think Ed likes dealing with registration for 3 days, and being done with it.

Separate weekends have been discussed from time to time, and may be again. One concern is for the players who travel from NC & GA, where there may be a Pro & Am traveling together. Another is our relatively small local staff being stretched....with March Madness, that would be 3 weekends in a 4 or 5 week period, plus another sanctioned, crosstown tournament in October.

no kidding john! i've heard about hh, but hopefully my putter can still do some good. i'm really looking forward to the vti and playing your course. will has given me good insights about it. also, i want to get a team on your waiting list, team lakefront, as soon as i can. stoney hill, i'll play wherever you want me to. earlewood mm is a great tourney and format and i think there should be more pdga match play events. the tension generated by the match play one-and-done format is excellent practice for the mental game. march is match play month!
