2007 Tyler Ice Bowl is a Huge Success for Aiding Our Neighbors Food Bank!
Building on the past few years of successful Ice Bowls, the Tyler Ice Bowl, held at Tyler State Park in Newtown, PA, looked to possibly be a 75-player event in 2007. But then, despite early morning showers, Mother Nature stepped in and gave us a 73 degree balmy day on January 6th. The result was that 94 players showed up to play. Thankfully, we have 27 holes at the Tyler State Disc Golf Course so we were able to accommodate the crowd. Unfortunately, a large number of casual players who showed up during the round had to be turned away to Tinicum, Sedgley, or Rutgers, or asked to come back a bit later in the day. We also had four non-playing volunteers as well as a number of playing volunteers and people that just came by to drop off canned goods and say hi.
We gave away official Ice Bowl merchandise to the top three finishers in each division as well as the top three donators of canned goods. Everyone that stayed around received a tee prize, and although the weather would have dictated Ice Cream Sundaes, we all enjoyed the traditional Hot Dog Split Sundaes. Contrary to tradition, the Mulled Cider was served ice cold instead of piping hot. The traditional Tyler Ice Bowl ICE Trophies were given out to the divisional winners and happily they had not melted too much in their individual foam coolers.
Many thanks to Stephen, Alan, JAFO, JB, Missy, Ginny, and Amber for all their help to make this year's Ice Bowl such a huge success! Also special thanks to the BCDGA crews (and B.O.B.) who helped by setting up and taking down the tents. You all know who you are, and if all goes well on the pavilion building front -- you bear the honor of having performed that task for the last time for a Tyler Ice Bowl! Thanks.
As in past years, the collection of canned goods for donation to the Aiding Our Neighbors food bank based in Yardley PA was the focus of the event. As we had collected 1778 lbs. last year, our goal this year was to collect 2000 lbs of food or more. Due to the large turn out and some extra special efforts by a few folks we blew away our goal as we ended up with over 4400 lbs. of food!!! A very special tip of the hat to my co-TD Stephen Caffery for bringing in 1800 lbs of food himself by saving money all year and beating the bushes at work. I may be the heart of the Tyler Ice Bowl, but Stephen is the soul.
Hope to see everyone next year! Can we reach 5000 lbs?
