What happened to having Pro worlds at the IDGC? Will this ever happen?

Jan 10 2007, 10:51 PM
Consider that no one has yet been picked to host any Pro Worlds after 2008. We may even see other majors at IDGC before a Pro Worlds. The NT is already this April. The IDGC will also soon provide a potential backup option for Pro Worlds if a bidder isn't found or doesn't come thru.
What happened to having Pro worlds at the IDGC? Will this ever happen?
You actually have to have courses to play before you can host the worlds :p

The Pro/Am worlds will be a great thing for the Great Lakes Region!
I've very excited to say that we have an abundance of pro-calibre courses, permission for expansion of our parks for new courses, timber ridge will be included, and both cities of kalamazoo and battle creek will be involved. Double the money, double the backing, double the fun!
Did anyone mention that the night life will be killer? Bells? Oberon???
Get some.

When Larry LaBond began playing disc golf in 1991, there weren't any courses for him to play in the Kalamazoo area.
Instead, LaBond and fellow disc golfers would converge on Mountain Home Cemetery and play from headstone to headstone. Or they would compete on the campus of Kalamazoo College, using light poles and trash cans as targets.
My, how the times have changed.
LaBond, president of the Kalamazoo-Battle Creek K-Aces Disc Golf Club, and others now have seven different courses from which to choose. The growth of the sport has culminated in Kalamazoo-Battle Creek being selected host of the 2008 Disc Golf Pro/Am World Championships, set to run Aug. 8-16.
``It was a lot of hard work,'' LaBond said of landing disc golf's ultimate event. ``We went to Arizona last March and made a presentation to the (Professional Disc Golf Association) board. They made a site visit in July and we were officially approved.''
Disc golf, which formalized as a sport in the 1970s, is much like regular golf, except a flying disc is used instead of a ball. Competitors start from a tee area and try to complete the hole in as few throws as possible.
With a total purse expected to exceed $80,000 and more than 800 competitors anticipated, the 2008 World Championships will not only boost disc golf in the area but will also be a shot in the arm for the local economy.
``Based on the economic impact I have seen previously, I would say it will be somewhere between a
$1- and $2-million dollar boom for the area,'' said David Gentry, Tour Manager for the PDGA. ``We are probably talking about 800 to 1,000 competitors. I believe Des Moines (Iowa) was the largest ever and I expect this to surpass that. All these players will be coming in early to practice, staying in hotel rooms and eating at local restaurants.''
Play is currently slated for Kalamazoo's Cold Brook Park, Oshtemo Township Park and Robert Morris Park, and Gobles' Timber Ridge Ski Area. Battle Creek's Begg Park and Kimball Pines, and Three Rivers' Meyer Broadway Park are also planned sites.
Next year's championships will mark just the third time in the event's history that one location will host the amateur and professional divisions. Ann Arbor was the last to have both in 2004.
``This is potentially going to be the biggest disc golf tournament ever,'' LaBond said. ``With the worlds, the whole disc golf community will be focused on Kalamazoo and Battle Creek. Part of the thing leading up to the event is improving the courses to make them better and we want to add a few more courses in before then to accommodate more players.''
Who will be the favorite when the event rolls around?
Look no further than Ken Climo, of Clearwater, Fla. Climo is the Tiger Woods of disc golf, winning an unprecedented 12 world titles, including nine in a row in the 1990s.
For those wanting to get a sneak peak at the sport, Cold Brook Park will host the Cracked Plastic Classic on Feb. 10-11, and Kimball Park will have the Lumberjack Open on March 10-11.

so glad this thread was brought back to life! let me just say that the courses around here are really going through a transformation and are looking sweeet!
Coldbrook had a slightt re design, 6 new holes. Which IMO makes the course 100X better. the locals have really been bustin their butts out there and puttin in some hours to work on that place. Benches and all sorts of woodwork out there.
Oshtemo got the short cement tees layed out. And it looks way sweet.
Meyer Broadway had a bunch of new holes put in, and basically it made a so-so am course into a top pro course. the new holes remind me of the Boggan.
I am really excited to see the chanages that will keep coming our way in the next year. cant wait for 08 WORLDS!
theres alot of stuff oging on with sponsorship right now, but i am going to keep everyone in suspense!
