I could not agree more. But the buzz is still a big part of my bag.
What are you asking?
Are you asking:
Would the Buzz replace, or play a larger role "go to disc" over the Roc?
I know you just got a few Buzz's only recently but have not had time to play with them much right?
Since I neither use the Roc, or Buzz (yet..) I am thinking of practicing with the Buzz soon. So far the Buzz has felt better with my grip being what it is. I like the feel, now wonder how it will perform.
I'll let you know.

I've tried both the Buzzz and the Roc and the Buzzz is better. I think the Roc is worthless. I've tried both DX and KC Pro and both have done nothing for my game. I bought a Buzzz and I have been able to shave at least 2-4 strokes off my game becasue I know what it can do, and how I can use it for whatever situation. Plus, the Buzzz is just an easier disc to use.

I don't think the answer is one or the other (or the Element). They are all great midrange discs, and whatever plastic you have them in, they all fly GREAT once you LEARN them.
Personally, I throw Rocs, and carry CH, SB, PRO and DX. But I've spent a good deal of time throwing the Buzzz, and Element in different plastics. They all work, and fly great once you learn the disc.

I for one can appreciate the value of being able to tap into hundreds or more Disc Golfers experience that may have come from using one or the other.
At times I see "vote" or "polls" one can put on a site.........that would have been another way of capturing information as well.
Overall a great forum is here for us to share our experiences with less seasoned or starter player's like Nloper, in the shortest time, so he can gain the maximum knowledge about disc selection, by hearing how Disc Golfer's describe these discs.
Now depending on skill levels, (how far can he drive, what is he using now for mid range, etc.) and experience if Nloper would share his............maybe further suggestions would come his way that is more age specific, skill level specific.
I wonder how this might change people's suggestions?

Nate...
Let me tell you what i have observed this morning...
So... Reading your dilemma, and seeing that I sorta have the same problem on finding the right midrange for me, I figured i would go out to the open feild with all of my midranges...
Heres what I brought...
Pro-D Buzz
DX Cobra (somewhat beat)
Star Gator
Star Roc
DX Wolf
Super Roc (beat)
Super Roc (New)
Champion Spider
Star Shark
DX Classic Roc
(All of them basically in new condition unless Specified)
When I got to the field I threw back and forth an exsessive amount of time. And in the end I found 3 of these discs could really help my game and might stay in my bag for good. Here were my expierences...
...The Super Roc, Great for longer drives and it was not as affected by the wind as the other 2. Out of the three of the discs I narrowed it down too it seemed to be the most unfriendly grip of the three. I found it really only useful for long drives, becuase I found its accuracy the worst out of the three.
...The Buzz, Great when thrown at a little hyzer angle right out of the hand, it would fly for a long time holding the line forever with just alittle fade at the end. This disc had the second best grip and flew the best even if not released at the right angle or was to low to the ground. Better than the roc for accuracy but it didnt get me the distance i always wanted. But there was one more disc i really seemed to like...
...Now this might sound crazy but I think if you just keep you might open and give it a try you might like it and it would be a great compliment to the Roc...
...The Wolf, I understand that this discs it not thrown by many and it seems that many people dislike this disc, but i found that it really seems to work. When thrown at a hyzer angle out of your hand it pops up and flies the straightest for a longer time than the Buzz. It seems to have more glide than the Buzz, but the buzz still had more glide than the roc. It was the most accurate and to me had the best grip of all of the discs. It was the touchiest of all the discs but when thrown for accuracy at a low speed its glide seemed to keep it going for an extreme long amount of time.
... Now i am a Roc guy, and Really like the roc, infact i love the roc. But for me I found that the Buzz its the overall best of the three midranges, but when you but the Wolf and Roc together I find that the pair out works the buzz in every way possible. With the distance and wind resistance of the Roc and the Glide and Accuracy of the Wolf, I believe that they, as a team can do much better that the Buzz alone.
...Just remember that this is my opinion, but on the question buzz or Roc, I say the buzz is over all the best, but if you put the Roc and Wolf together alot more is accomplished! :D
witch ever you enjoy throwing most :D

i have moved from Comets, to Storms, to Buzzz's, to SB Rocs, to Coyotes and QMS's. Coyotes are great unless you put too much off-axis torque on them in which case they flip. QMS's or Aurora MS's or Sirius MS's are great too. i use a Coyote if i want more flip and flex and a QMS if i want to be very straight. the QMS will hold any line -- anny, hyzer, or straight.
i probably need some kind of meat hook or "NASCAR" disc (all left turns) for times when i really need severe fade, but for now i usually go with a driver thrown with less power for that type of midrange need...
i am not sure though i would recommend buying them all -- unless you are wealthy. see if you can find people on the course who will let you give their discs a try. if you ask them what they use and why -- they may even encourage you to try their discs out. in the end you are better off finding the mold(s) you believe in and that feels right in your hands. don't be afraid to carry one heavy and one light version of whatever you end up with -- they will complement each other.
for some reason a lot of people want everyone else to throw just what they happen to like ;)

I have thrown all of the above quite a bit, and I find the Buzzz to be the best for me. One thing that it has got hands down over the Roc is the plastic. A Z-Buzzz starts out at the perfect stability and changes very slowly. This is great for when you are learning how to throw because you can throw it a lot and it stays the same. Start playing multiple rounds a day with a Dx Roc at a wooded course and it will change pretty fast. A champion ROc is nice, but it takes forever to break in and they are expensive and harder to get.

I think its a testament to both manufacturers that we can say the same thing about two separate discs. I absolutely adore my flat top rocs. They'll fly stable, straight, or flippy... they'll go dead accurate on whatever line I put them on without fail, but they're still a little forgiving. Absolutely fantastic.

i have thrown the buzz alot and love it. my mid of choice is the wasp. i can finesse this disc or throw it over 300' accurately. that being said the buzz is a more beginner friendly disc than the wasp. i use the combo of buzz and wasp because the buzz is just a beadless wasp so i can get different results out of similar discs. all the advice given is good. it comes down to what feels good to you now. as you progress you will probably change things so go for what disc you have the most confidence in.

Really depends on the type.
Different moldings and Different Plastic have flight differences !!!!!!!
I have thrown both and like certain runs of each.
Some Beat Rocs fly almost Identical to New Buzzz's .
Some Crystal Buzzz's fly like some candy roc's.
Some Z Buzzz's flip , while some are overstable , almost like Wasp's in Elite X plastic and even some in Z plastic.
I have some Candy Sharks that are more overstable than Candy Roc's.
It's up to the player and alot of Experimenting with throwing styles. /msgboard/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

It is my observation that the major difference between players that throw a less stable midrange such as the Buzzzz and the players that throw a more stable midrange such as the Wasp or Roc is their typical angle of release.
I find righties don't think about this as much, but if you watch enough disc golfers you will notice that everybody has a different angle of release when they are trying to throw a 'straight' shot. It is safe to say that most players typically throw the disc with some amount of hyzer, but some players throw their typical straight shot with about as much hyzer as my spike hyzer.
I taught myself to throw almost perfectly flat becuz I see alot of turnover shots as a leftly and it seemed like the right thing to do. Now that I have nmore power I have had to adapt my shot to more of a hyzer release to prevent flipping all of my discs. I throw a Wasp bcuz it goes straight the way I throw and a Buzz flips like a little b for me.
Bottom line:
People who like buzzs generally throw the disc with alot of hyzer. People who like Wasps or Rocs generally throw with less of a hyzer or they simply throw harder...

I swear by my 1st Run Buzzz's. They hold any line I give them. Later runs were ok but not as consistent which is why I have a stash of 1st Runs. I never gelled with the ROCs as there are SOO many different types. I use the Buzzz for most of my mid-range shots. Mid turnover shots get the Stratus and stable mid shots get my Drone....the Drone is got to be the most under appreciated disc out there.....VERY stable and consistent.....but that is just me and my game.....

For me it is about grip. I throw the Buzz because it comes out of my hand smoother. For me, it is better in the wind because I get some off axis torque when I release a Roc or a Wasp. I can throw the Buzz hard with slight hyzer and it holds a line very well. I can throw it flat for shots in the 300' range and control the amount of low speed with the shot height. A 300' shot with my Buzz (2nd 1st run, 177g) thrown flat and straight off my chest (about 5' of height) will fly perfectly flat with no fade. It can be overpowered, but if I wanted to throw hard I would simply use a Teebird or a Firebird.

DX Rocs are never useless! I usually carry 4-6 Midranges in my bag and at the end are two DX rocs. One is the one getting broken it and the other is a "seasoned" DX roc. The "seasoned" Roc has been beat to heck and turns over like crazy. I don't know any disc that will do this out of the box other than putters but they won't fly as far with the same control. When looking at a left to right hole (I'm RHBH mostly) I love being able to throw my beat Roc and knowing it will turn over and stay turned over. There is always a place for it in my bag. I feel it's the most valuable disc in my bag because it's the hardest to replace when lost of broken. That's why I have another that's next in line in my bag to get some seasoning.
On the overall question of Roc V Buzz: I like 'em both.
I carry 2 Champion Roc and 2 DX Rocs. Champ Rocs are great for hyzer line shots or straight shots with a bit of a left hook at the end. I can also throw S-turns with them and they generally comeback. The DX Rocs I've already explained above.
The Buzz has been in and out of my bag for a couple of years but in general it stays IN now. It feels great in the hand and I feel it has the smoothest release for a midrange. When thrown hard it stays straight the longest and holds an anhyzer line well without coming out too soon or continuing to flip. I think a Buzz is a slightly faster disc than the Roc and it may get slightly more distance when thrown turned over.
No experience with the Element. The QMS is a great straight disc too but I don't like the grip...too sharp on the bottom. Wasp is an overstable pig but I throw my newest Champ Roc for that job. If you want an overstable midrange on a low budget, get a Wasp. I buy the Champ Rocs because I like supporting the USDGC and theyre aesthetically pleasing somehow. I've been throwing the Star Shark too and liking it as well.
Most important...go out and throw them. Go to a field and throw for 1/2 an hour. Play a round with only midranges and a putter. You will improve your game and may be surprised at how far a midrange really goes and the low scores you can end up with. If you can throw a midrange hard and accurately, all you golf shots will improve.
So..go throw some plastic and enjoy :D

Well, over the years I have thrown both. Honestly, I haven't had much luck with either. I dumped the Buzz for the MRV which I felt like I could control better. Unfortunately, the MRV is bye bye and I am at a cross roads regarding the Buzz and the Roc. I haven't thrown either in quite some time and I'm interested to see how things go with them as my game as changed considerably since I threw them last.
I also throw the Storm and I love it...but it is just a tad too understable for me at times.
My beef with the Roc is that there are just too many variations. The DX, 8X, 9X, San Marino, Super, Baby, Star, Candy, CE, Rancho, blah...blah...blah. It's just too much to keep up with and too many flight characteristics to keep track of.
What I think that I will like about the Buzz is that there isn't all the variation. I will get an ESP Buzz and that will be it and I don't have to worry about spending 30 bucks on it, or breaking it in on purpose, or buying a new one every month. I'm not a fan of carrying 4 different wears of a disc. I want consistency and predictability and if they are all different wears I don't wan to be guessing on the wear of my Roc. I want to keep it simple and I don't think the Roc is the way to do it.
So, in closing, I think I'm going to invest in a few ESP Buzzs. I will throw a Storm, Buzz & Wasp combo for short drives. Sounds good to me.
I will miss the MRV, though.

For-friggin-ever. I have one that I've used every round for 1.5 years and it still isn't as flippy as my less beat up X Stratus.
Montrose Max is right in that once you get a DX Roc beat to the point of turning over dependably...guard it with your life, or have back-ups. Beat DX Rocs are always the first thing I look for when dealing with the local river-divers because I am only able to play once or twice a week which would take me more than one season to beat up a new DX Roc to the point of being a turnover disc, so I like to have spares on hand in case I lose the most beat up Roc in my bag.

The Storm is one of the most underated disc IMO. Great disc, especially in Z plastic. Too overstable? Just like any Z or CH disc, you have to break it in. I have several Storms that fly dead straight with almost no fade. If you can control the spin on a Storm, they are like a longer/faster Roc.
Too many Roc variations? Maybe. But the Roc has been a round a LOT longer than the Buzzz. Give the Buzzz another ten years, and I'm sure you'll reconsider that statement. D, X (1st and 2nd), Z, Chrystal, Z 1st run, Z 2nd 1st run, Christmas Buzzz ... is a pretty good start to making the Buzzz confusing to some.
The Rocs you mention are not all that different, especially when new. There are some minor differences in the molds. Ontario Rocs do seem to be more straight fliers right off the bat. Understanding that there are three molds, Rancho, Ontario, San Marino is a good start to understanding how they will all fly. Plastic will make a difference, just like D, X, and Z ... the stability, and how long it takes to break the disc in will be very similar to DX, Pro or SB, and CH.
I usually carry a CH Rancho, SB rancho, two Pro KC's (ontario) and a DX rancho. It's not really as complicated as you think. Both of the KC Pro discs flew much like a Rancho when new, but broke in quickly to fly straighter, one turns over a little. The DX Rancho is at least 4 years old and has a beautiful right hand fade.
If you bought Wasps in Z, X or ESP, and D ... you would have the same thing. New they will all fly very similar. Then as they break in and get used they will change, the D faster, X will stay stable to overstable, and the Z overstable. Not much difference really.
And I say Wasp, because the Wasp is more like a Roc than a Buzzz. The Buzzz doesn't have a bead and so really ... it's a different disc. While you might like the way the Buzzz flies when new, it's going to start turning over a lot faster than a Wasp or Roc, which IMO gives it a much shorter life. That's why everyone loves the 1st Run Buzzz, because it flies pretty overstable until it breaks in, has a longer life when it flies straight, and doesn't turn into a flippy disc nearly as fast as a X or D Buzzz.

Boneman,
I think I said the Storm was a little understable. For me it is very straight when thrown about 75% with a little hyzer. I really love it for tunnel shots. I also use it for bigger anhyzers.
Thank you for proving my point regarding the Roc. I stopped reading after about two sentences of your Roc descriptions...it's like math for me....it hurts my head to comprehend all the variations.
Yes, the Buzz is relatively new, and I'm sure new variations are in its future. But, for now it is just easier. I will go with ESP plastic and stick with it. I'm going to keep it simple.

What Innova disc is most like a Storm?

What Innova disc is most like a Storm?
Very tough question. I am not sure if there is a close 1-1 match. When I switched from Innova to Discraft, the Z-Storm replaced the Shark for me, but the disc shapes are a little different and the storm flies further.
After throwing the storm for a full year, I would have to say it flies most like a beat up rancho roc or possibly a new San Marino (Just guessing on the San Marino, I never actually threw them very much).

That's funny. I was going to say Cobra. I think this goes to show that there is no 1-1 match as someone said earlier.

What about the Element-X from Gateway. It deserves to be right there next to a roc or a buzzz. It is a very predictable disc.
And as for a stable putter...the Wizard or Warlock are a great choice.

Change "Wolf" to "Squall" and these would be my thoughts.

STAR Stingrays are sweet! They are nothing like a DX Stringray (understable-roller).
I'm NOT saying you should get one if you already picked the DX Roc. Get to know that Roc and you'll be cutting strokes off your game! ;)
My DG mentor told me a couple years ago to get a few DX Rocs and play rounds with ONLY the Rocs. I took this advice and it really improved my game all around.
When you are ready to add another shot to your bag, the Stingray can be a very valuable disc, especially when you realize the importance of knowing how to throw a roller. DX Stingray, DX Leopard, (and later, the Roadrunner or Sidewinder), for roller shots will add a whole new dimension to your game.

Personally I like the Roc better then the Buzzz. My experience with the Buzzz has been good, and I definiatly think that the Buzzz is a longer disc. Where I had problems was in less then ideal weather. Z and CryZtal plastic were just too slick in rain and cold. The one problem with the DX Roc is that it does season fairly fast, so it will change it's flight in the first week or so of use which really concerned me at first, but after the first week, I've found that the flight pattern will not change much more.

I prefer the Z MRV over both the Buzz and the Roc....so sad. Why did they discontinue this great disc??? Personally, I think the Buzz and the Roc are both over-rated...and the Storm is under-rated.
you ever try the stingray?????????
