So Who all is running an Ice Bowl event or series this winter?
It is still not too late for clubs or individuals to take part in this long standing event.
The website to register is www.icebowl2007.com. (http://www.icebowl2007.com.)
There is plenty of information on how it can be used to promote disc golf in your city through media coverage on the site.
If your club is not running one yet its not too late.
These events are casual and are a great way for clubs or companies to gain exposure if promoted properly.
These events are meant to be low key, so clubs or people who have never ran an event before can get their feet wet (literally sometimes) and get some experience as a tournament director without all the pressure.

Ice Bowls are my favorite tournaments during the year.<ul type="square">
First and foremost, they are Charity Fundraisers for local food banks. The food donations brought and money raised go towards feeding hungry people in the local area.
Lower Entry Fees. All the Ice Bowls in my area (the Mid-Atlantic region) feature lower entry fees; usually $20-25 for Pros, and $15-$20 for Amateurs. And even though I'm a Pro, I'll usually get a player's package with that, normally a sweet Ice Bowl stamped disc and a mini! Because of the low entry fees, I can play in 4 or 5 Ice Bowls for the cost of one Supertour during the regular year. Ice Bowls don't break anyone's budget like B-tiers and Supertours do.
No whimps, no whiners. Whoever invented this was a genius! The official motto of the tournament allows for no complaining. As soon as anyone starts #$*&$! about the cold or how bad their game is (since it's wintertime and they haven't played in a while and they're cold anyway) they get clipped immediately. Players follow this motto religiously in my area - whiners are not tolerated and people abide by the rule. Too bad they make up for it during all the other tournaments during the year!
Fewer divisions. Unlike normal PDGA tournys where there are 11 divisions of just a handful of people and everyone and their cousin is a division winner, Ice Bowls usually only feature a Pro, Advanced, and Intermediate division. No Masters division so that old farts aren't subjected to the excruciatingly painful trauma of having to play with young whipper-snappers. ;)
Exposure in the media. It's only rarely that I read in the newspaper or see a segment on the local TV channel about a Supertour with a $10000 purse, touring Pros and 90 entrants. But I've seen countless articles in newspapers nationwide every year about the 45 freaks who went out and threw a Frisbee around in sub-zero temperatures all day and raised thousands of dollars for charity. I was even interviewed on camera and the segment aired on a local TV station. Ice Bowls get more exposure and promotion for the sport of disc golf than any event year round.
Ice Bowls are less competitive. It's wintertime and no one has really been playing all that much anyway. You're all bundled up in layers of fleece and jackets, and you're wearing either heavy boots which screws up your footwork or you're wearing Seal Skins and your feet are freezing. The course is usually in crappy shape, with a foot of snow covering the ground and ice on all the teepads. If the snow is powdery, you can't throw a roller. You can't use white discs because they'll get lost, so you're usually using colored discs which aren't your regular discs and thier flight characteristics are unfamiliar to you. If you're shooting crappy it doesn't matter because you only paid $20 to enter and most of that is going to charity and you got a disc with your entry fee anyway!
Alternate formats. Because the Ice Bowl is usually more of a non-formal affair, tournament directors in my area usually try more fun stuff. They stick a basket out on the frozen lake and have people play out to it. They have people purchase $5 mulligans for charity or give them several free ones which they can use during the tourny. They make up safari holes! I've played more safari holes during Ice Bowl tournaments than any other tournament during the year. Safari holes are easy during Ice Bowls. Because of the snow and cold, combining two short holes that wouldn't even be a tough par 3 in warm weather become legitimate pro par four holes.
Pot luck lunches. Why do we only do this during Ice Bowls? Nobody has to pack their own lunch, or leave the park during the lunch break to go drive and find an open deli on the weekend (not an easy task sometimes) or pay $6 to some food vendor to bring you a lousy sandwich, chips and a soda. Everybody brings a dish to the Ice Bowl and it's always delicious! You usually always see hot sausage and some kind of soup. There's always several different types of chili, all varying in degrees of hotness, from the mild stuff to the 4-alarm "anus-in-space" variety. There's always a bevy of deserts, and hot chocolate and cider is usually there to warm up the frozen bodies, too. One guy deep fried a whole turkey a couple of years ago.
Booze! Because it's usually so cold out, and the tournament isn't PDGA sanctioned, drinking is more widely accepted. Nothing warms you up on a cold morning like a couple of shots of hot rum. Since the tournament is not as competitive, people catch a buzz and just have a fun time. And park rangers are rarely around at that time of year to enforce park rules. [/list]

Ditto to Jeff's comments..
As it stands now, we're letting mother nature decide for us.
- If there's snow on the ground or it's incredibly cold, we're doing FDR (I won't be playing, but will be staying warm at the fire.)
- If it's not insanely cold or snowy, I'll be trekking around Tyler w/ Big Dog and the crew.
Alan, any idea what the pin positions will be? Mostly long, short, or varied?

WATERLOO DISC GOLF CLUBS
7TH ANNUAL ICE BOWL
AUSTIN, TEXAS
Saturday February 3, 2007
Zilker Park Disc Golf Course (18 Hole Setup)
Signup Begins at 11:00 am
(at Polo Picnic Tables, by hole #1 of the north course)
Start at 12:30 pm
As many of you probably know, the Ice Bowl was started a number of years ago to have a day of disc golf solidarity in the gloom of winter (well, ok it isn't usually THAT gloomy around here, but you get the idea). Every year, clubs and people from around the world gather together to help fight hunger within their communities and to have a day of fun playing disc golf no matter what the weather.
The rules of the Ice Bowl are simple: 1) Under no circumstances can an Ice Bowl be postponed or cancelled; 2) No wimps or whiners allowed; 3) There are no excuses for not attending!
We will be raising money and food for the Capital Area Food Bank. The entry fee is $13 and 3 cans of food (or $15 and no food). For that $13, you will receive either an Ice Bowl Disc and Mini OR an Ice Bowl T-Shirt (supplies of both are limited - first come first choice; we will also have long-sleeve shirts, but there is an extra $3 fee for them). After that, we are playing for fun!!! All proceeds will go directly to the charity.
We will also have some CTP contests and maybe some other fun stuff. The whole idea is to have a great time while helping others out who really need it. If you have anything you would like to donate as CTP prizes, please let us know. Anything we receive, we will give away!

Tyler Park and Rec with assistance from the Rose City Disc Club is proud to annouce the second annual Rose City Ice Bowl. This event is being run by the city and is strictly a charity event. While there will not be any payouts this is a great event to help raise money for the Food Bank.

There will only be one round for the Ice Bowl, but we plan on adding a second round for the Rose City Disc Club BAG TAG CHALLENGE!! If you are interested, bag tags will be going for $15 and the money will be used to help Tyler finish out our existing coures and build a THIRD COURSE at Lindsey park. So if you get the chance come join us this week. We start late enough that you can drive over from Dallas if need be and certainly someone wants to take that #1 tag from us for bragging rights.

We have a local player that is insisting that since the city Park and Rec is running the Ice Bowl, and not the club, that our Ice Bowl is "messed up". I believe this is the phrase he used. He said that since there is not payout, like every other Ice Bowl in the US, that the tournament is wrong. A question by show of hands, how many Ice Bowls have pay outs and how many are strictly charity events only. Thanks.

We do small payouts. But our entry us only $10, and you get a mini and lunch. We will have handmade trophies for 1st place in the Gold division, Silver division, and Bronze division. We might even add a disc or two. Probably no cash for the Gold division (unless I'm feeling very generous that day ;)). But I don't think anyone should "expect" any kind of payout for an Ice Bowl charity event. I believe that Disc Golfers should feel priviledged to help return generosity to their community in such a fun way.
Is this "player" heavily involved with the organizing of the Ice Bowl or other Disc Golf events in the area? Will this player consider contributing to the event so there can be some kind of payout?

We have no payout at all. At most, we might give a donated disc or shirt for first place in each division (if we get plenty of stuff donated).
It still amazes me somewhat, but Austin golfers have long embraced the spirit of this and we usually get about 110 - 130 players, even without any payout.
I don't think that a park's dept running it makes it wrong, as long as they are still doing it as a fundraiser for their food bank (or other charity).
It is also not wrong for it not to have a payout. Lots of Ice Bowls do have payouts, but lots don't.
It is all about the fun and the fundraising! :D

At my count, I see the following:
2 - No Payout
1 - Very light payout
3 - Payout
I also know the Boy Scot ranch at Shreveport does payouts. So this is about 4 out of 7 as best I can calculate. By the way, the Ice Bowl here provides trophies and t-shirts for the entry fee, they just don't pay out cash and discs. So I guess what I am looking for is whether Cash is paid out at Ice Bowls or not. Pretty much the Parks and Rec department is paying about 60% back as players packs and trophies and the remainder is going to the Food Bank.

how many Ice Bowls have pay outs and how many are strictly charity events only. Thanks.
They way I'm trying to pull off the inaugural High Country ICE BOWL is to get area businesses and player's to sponsor the event (I kind of have to do it this way though because it's a new course with no club, or money). I have received several very generous donation's in the form of prize's to help intice participates, and in return hopefully raise more money! This way everybody also has a good chance at taking something home for their contribution to the ICE BOWL, and also the entry fee can be lower with most of the money going straight to the Charity, rather then a payout, or even a big player's package.
Our entry fee is only $15 ($5 pays for the Ice Bowl disc you get, $10 goes to the charity). For tournament winner's I plan to do a grap brown bag box. Nothing huge inside, but at least a few good one's. Basically, everybody has the same chance at winning the bigger prize! Although, they might just get a sticker too. Tough luck, it's for charity! :D Again, it's all coming from donation's!
The player's donation's pretty much are going to be CTP prize's during the 1st round. Another prize opportunity.
The bigger prize donation's are going toward's what I'm calling the, "Freeze Your Throwoff CTP Charity Rally". At fair distance's for everyone, it's a $1 per throw or for every $20 you get an extra 5 throws (25 total). Whoever get's closest, get's that prize! The more money you spend, the more prize's you may win! All that money goes to the charity!
I also got pizza's donated from Pizza Hut for lunch.
So, I'm basically hoping that giving will promote receiving (in the form that happy participant's will spend more knowing that their money goes toward's the charity, and not a payout!)
I am being very, very generous about it though. Next year I'll tighten it up a bit more.
My point is, don't spend more money then you have to, use other people's! :D Get the whole community involved, get donations for the payout! :)

So I guess what I am looking for is whether Cash is paid out at Ice Bowls or not. Pretty much the Parks and Rec department is paying about 60% back as players packs and trophies and the remainder is going to the Food Bank.

We payout trophies for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd to 3 divisions. Also, big spender award for who put the most money into the event (via sponsership/food/mulligans, etc). This year, we are providing a meal also.

Thanks.
Try this, The ADGC did this for the first annual frozen creek Ice bowl last year. memebers and business donated none disc golf stuff, hats, shirts, coffee mugs, bags use these items as ctp's and/or prizes. The winner of our ice bowl still talks about the watch he won, which my wife bought for me, i didn't like it and we lost the receipt, so i donated it
This year I plan to buy one, just to donate it, since it was so well received last year.
The point is "it's and Ice Bowl" people will come because it's Disc Golf and for a good cause. I understand stressing over it. I have a little over one week before the 2nd annual frozen creek ice bowl in Archdale NC. And I'm stressing.
But lets just have fun. It's an ICE Bowl "ICE,ICE BABY"

The Ice Bowl is not about "pay out", it is about "pay back"...as in "pay back" something to the community you live in.
At the Ice Bowl in Paradise, held in Los Angeles, the first place finishers get a small prize - even in the Pro Divisions. The So Cal Series fees are donated as well. In the 10 years that I have been playing Ice Bowls, the only payouts I've seen are players packs and/or donated merchandise for prizes.

i charge $15 entry for all divisions. most people give $20 and say keep the $5 for the charity. every year (i post it on the flyer well in advance) i take $5 off the entry for the charity and payout the rest. this year i paid all divisions cash (i didn't announce it until the end to discourage bagging) to encourage people to give their winnings back.
we had 46 people. between $5/person, a few large individual donations and the annual cuss jar we raised over $1,300 (almost $30/person).
so yes we do pay out, but it's light and most of it comes back.

we have a 2 round short tourney
First round is singles and second round is doubles A and B format
First round is our first tag round of the year and doubles is paid out a little for the tourney winners and of course DFL
$15 entry fee with $5 off the top for charity
The person who complained about a poor payout needs to re-evaluate his personal attitude towards others less fortunate then him
Ironically , in our area disc golfers are not the rich folks and it is GREAT to see people who dont have that much give to people who have less

It was an Ice Bowl yesterday at Dunham Park in Liberty Corner, NJ. Thanks to all who braved the cold & wind (18 degrees, winds 25 mph, wind chill -2. We raised close to $400 for the Somerset County Foodbank as well as 20 lbs of canned goods.
Special thanks to Big Dog for his continual role as Ice Bowl chef and all those who brought food, no one went hungry. There was only one fine for whining the whole day. :D
