The first A-Tier event for 2007 on the west-coast is ready to go! The Las Vegas Gentlemen's Club Challenge, a three-day, one round a day event, will be held 2/23, 2/24, and 2/25 at Sunset Park. The event is hosted by seven guys who are "gentlemen" on the disc golf course. This event is NOT affiliated with any adult-themed establishment.

Entry form, sponsor list, and sign-up lists are available to review at lvdiscgolf.com and lvbagtag.com.

Last year, $7,000 ADDED between Pros and Ams, mostly due to a $5,000 sponsorship from Innova.

Spots are limited, so sign up ASAP.

So I'm from Jersey planning on coming out for this event. Can any locals here help me out a little? I'm gonna be meeting up with some friends in Vegas to hang out, so I'm gonna want a hotel that is close to some action, yet still close to the tournament.

Also there's a thin chance I won't have a car (I'm trying to talk my AM2 buddy into playing). Any ways to the course shy of me renting a car?

I'm really looking forward to my first time in the state, but I definitely am pretty clueless. Thanks!

The course is located fairly close to the strip. The airport is in the way so it isnt exactly walking distance (although someone tried last tourney). A cab isnt too bad of an option, but both ways can become pricey.Just about any hotel on the south side of the strip would be close enough to the course. There is plenty of "action" everywhere so just picka hotel with a decent rate. Id recommend reserving as soon as you can.

You can PM me if you have more questions. I just woke up and am probably not thinking straight.

Now I just have to figure out how to get there with no car if my buddy doesn't sign up.

When will a pre-reg list be posted? (My buddy doesn't know if he'll play, and will probably late until as last minute as he can, so he wants to keep tabs on registration)

First group tees at 7 AM. Last group tees at 2 PM. The order of play is beginner groups first and then move up with Open teeing last. Therefore, on Sunday, the top Open group tees at 2 PM and many other participants who have already finished thier rounds can join the group as a gallery. There were about 40 people walking with the top Open group last year.

If we tee a group every 10 minutes, we can fit 172 people. (Which we should exceed this year.) If we tee a group every 9 minutes, we can fit 192 people. If we tee a group every 8 minutes, we can fit 216 people.

Not many Am women yet, but the Pro Open Women is looking pretty good.

Course has just been amended. Instead of playing 24 holes, you are playing 20 holes. 5 holes have been combined to make them very long holes. These are 1 to 2, 4 to 5, 13 to 14, 16 to 17, and 22 to 23. Another hole (Hole A) as been added near tournament central. Distances being measured soon.

are there going to be mando's or can you just throw over the ball fields??
all of these combo holes (except 1) play around the ball fields when put together...this could be an issue with tee times as some groups may play them with people on them when others groups may play them with nobody on the fields making it an unfair advantage if there are no mandos to prevent people from throwing over the fields...

just a thought that needs to be addressed before tournament time

Im pretty sure you can risk throwing over the fields if you want. No mandos. However, I do not see your point. I dont see people being in the fields as an advantage/disadvantage. To me, the shot is the same either way. Friday and Sat. should be no problems with park users in the ball diamonds. Sunday there is usually a league that uses the field that holes 1-5 wrap around. I hope they are not there that weekend. We usually have to fight with them or skip hole 1 and 5.
Am I missing something that you are talking about? See you soon!!! :D

Am I missing something that you are talking about?

If there is no game going on and the field is empty, the only thing the thrower needs to consider is whether they think they can clear the fence.

If there is a game going on, then the thrower has to worry about disrupting the ball game, possible pegging an outfielder, and then dealing with the crowd in the stands.

If there is a game gong on for some competitiors and not for others, then it is not a level playing field for all competitors. If there are mandys that prohibit throwing over the fences, then it is a level playing field.

I think that's what Keith is getting at. :)

c_trotter
Jan 18 2007, 01:44 PM
I can see that. I guess since i play it all the time, it makes no difference to me if there is people there. They act like we are not there, so we act like they are not there. Disrupting their game is the last thing I worry about. :D

I wonder what Jacquart will say about this. I dont think Ive heard too many people complain about this during tourneys. I cant remember an issue other than ata few monthly events weve had. Jeff usually does a really good job of reserving all the land we need for the tourney.

Another thought. Is the actual shot harder, or is it just mentally tougher? I think just mentally tougher.

johnbiscoe
Jan 18 2007, 02:26 PM
this is golf, "mentally tougher"= "actually harder". i've played sunset a bunch of times on trips to vegas and the presence/absence of people on the ball fields definitely has an effect on me that locals quite likely don't feel.

I know its golf. I know mentally tougher=tougher. I agree that I dont feel the same way about it as people who dont play there everyday. After thinking it over, I believe this is one situation the TD has NO control over. If people are in the diamond, they paid to be there and have every right we do. I dont think the park would consciously not schedule an event fpr the diamonds. They generate WAY more money than disc golf does. In vegas (as in most places) money talks.

I just think this is one thing we cant do anything about (if it is even an issue).

i agree that the td has no control over whether there are people on the ballfields, however the td does have control over whether players are penalized/rewarded for throwing over the ballfields. (although if there were mandos on the ballfields keith probably wouldn't have given me the victory my last time out there by tincupping on #3- i don't throw far enough to try to go over that one)

rhett
Jan 18 2007, 07:06 PM
I think Keith's point is that someone with one tee-time might not have anyone on the field and have to option to go for it, whereas another player with another tee-time might not have that option because the field is in use at that time.

Using mandy's so that you can not throw over the fields, period, would make the course play the same no matter when any particular player happened to be playing.

Since I am playing "speaking for Keith" here, I believe he is bringing it up now so that the TD can consider this and make a decision and have it all handled prior to the tourney so that it can't become as issue during the tournament. :)

Plus Keith knows he should throw a roller on 3, and he wants to be forced to do so.

I think people playing in disc golf tournaments should lighten up a little. One could also argue that someone walking down the adjacent sidewalk or driving in a car too fast next to the tee box gives some players disadvantages.

I also cannot control the wind throughout the day, so it may be windy at 9:17 AM, and rainy at 10:23 AM, but perfect weather at 11:13 AM.

P.S. The ballfields have ALWAYS come into play at every tournament hosted at Sunset Park!!!

speaking for myself now :Dbut rhett and john knew what i meant being td's themselves

having not dealt with tee times for past vegas tournies(which i have played at since 1999) it is something for the td(which i have been doing since 1996)to consider since things are different for different times of day on the ball fields...i have NEVER played an event there where at least one ball field had no one on it....

i am sure jeff would like to consider this as it is no different to make mando's on hole that you are TRYING to make tougher by making them tougher for ALL players...
by the way hole 13 has a mando on it to keep people from throwing over the ball fields and i have NEVER heard anyone complain that they had to play the mando....

i just thought that bringing up now gives everyone time to discuss options of what to do so that it doesn't become a morning of tournament snap decision...

i will play either way as i still love the events, city and great guys involved with the local vegas scene...i have always been a solid sponsor and helper and will continue to do so even if they make decisions i don't agree with.

i just throw it out there because i think that FAIRNESS should be one of the main tenets of disc golf competitions and having no mando's on holes that wrap around the ball fields is not fair to ALL players

Jon,

I know Scotty and Jordan are traveling together. They may have room for another.

Doug and Jim are going.

So far in my car, are Cary, Chuck, and myself. We also have one of the suites at the host hotel. Pretty sure Cary is bringing his air matress and crashing on the floor. Were you wanting to do the same? Not sure how much I can cram into the Magnum... Are you playing?

I am not in YET. I keep trying every angle to get them to let me in. I am 3rd on the wait list. No matter what I am going even if i just caddie for cary and party at dukes.

I am probably driving myself because i have the the monday after off and i might visit with some friends on sunday night and drive back monday. i am just trying to scroung up some floor space for my air mattress as well if i can't stay at my friends house.

I wish I could be there to see this one. It looks like it will be a heck of an event. Watch out for Cale, he's playing very good right now. If this event determines the best gentleman in the game, though, my money's on Barry. He would be a fine representative for any sport.

reporting that the ratings may be a little low. The wind was about 17mph STEADY. and gusts of up to 30 mph!! it was definatly tougher than what is on paper. In my opinion.

Fats
Feb 24 2007, 01:31 PM
The ratings are low because EVERYONE'S involved. And the wind was calmer in the morning. So an intermediate guy throws 67 right, and then teh winds pick up and and a pro throws the same score. Lots of low scores used as propagators, if I were to guess.

Doesn't quite explain my 882, but I was hoping it would be lower to be dropped automatically. That one's gonna haunt me.

Cary -

What discs were you throwing in the high wind conditions?

"Go To" driver, mid and putter?

A brand new 175 Champion Firebird for my main overstable driver. I would go to the Star Max if it was a really long hole.

For Mids it was a brand new 180 S-Line MD1. They are way overstable, and hold a really good line in the wind. A super beat up Ching Roc came in really handy for tailwind drives and approaches.

For putting, its always a 175 dx BB Aviar. I was using one of the new ones for approaching. A slightly used one for main putter.

Thanks!! :D

Didn't touch Saturday. The TD provided excellent wind notes in the report. I pulled up the division play order from the flyer which was still online. Then entered player ratings and scores for each division in time order on my SSA calculator to see each division's SSA value. Then grouped divisions together with close values for the official processing. I think players will find this is prettty fair once the ratings come out, considering the circumstances.
