YEAH Skylands!!!

This DVD is great! Excellent camera work, great quality digital video, and hilarious commentary!

Everyone did so much work, but Jen has put in months of work just so that we can relive "the best NT of the year", according to Yeti.

BTW, when you want something done right you get a professional. Ms. Padham is just that. Professional video editing and processing is just one of the reasons this video will stand out.

Thanks for all the hard work, Jen. Congrats on a job well done!

I've ordered mine!

jenpadham
Dec 19 2006, 04:05 PM
I was very lucky to have a great crew of volunteers. Sean Healy, Mike Fagerstrom, Jeff Padham (my brother), Nicole DeRoberts, Diana and Rebecca VanDerJagt, James Luce, and myself did the camera work. And if you ask them if they regret not playing in the Skylands Classic NT, they will tell you that walking around with the lead cards for those 2 days was way more fun than playing their home course. The pros were super nice and cool, we had a great time!!

I am glad that you like the dvd

I am sorry about the dvd being loose in the package. I know that when I sent them out, they were not loose, so it must have happened during shipping. If you bought a dvd and it is scratched and won't play - send it back and I will send you another one. Sorry about that!!

Steve, John, and I actually used a thesaurus. There aren't enough conversational words in the English language to describe 3-4 shots per 15 players on 108 holes.
And I agree with you that the commentary is a bit repetitive. We did this on purpose. I wanted to make a video that disc golfers could watch and enjoy - the course is great - some of the best players in the world - Steve and John are funny people - etc.
I also wanted to make a video that people who didn't know too much about disc golf could watch and follow along with. If you watch ball golf on tv, you will hear them say the same thing over and over again and I wanted non-disc golfers to be able to understand the game without it being outright explained (like an instructional video). I tested this on a few non-disc golfers and it worked. By the end of the video, they knew who the players were and the basics of the game.
I don't want to make excuses for myself I just wanted to explain the reasoning behind what I did. I hope that makes sense.
And I love it when people critique my work! Thanks guys! :)

The Skylands Classic will not be an NT event this year. We are planning on running an A Tier that weekend, and we are changing the name because it is obviously confusing. I would rather play the A tier than make a video of it. And I would also like to travel somewhere new this summer

Will -

I sent it to the address that you gave me. The problem was that I made up the labels that had your name and address and then when I got to the post office, they said that I had the wrong zip code for your town. Probably my fault. So I had to cross out your zip code and re write it with pen (next to a typed out label). This should not be a problem, but if you don't get the dvd by Saturday, I will have a copy for you at the Ice Bowl.

My return address on the label is my P.O. Box in Warwick, and I have moved back to Brooklyn, so I won't be able to check the box to see if it was returned until the weekend.

Long explanation....

Hey Jen I just watched it. What a great job you did, I will be able to see this video years from now and still enjoy it. Looks like such a professional job did you get somebody from film school to edit it? The way each shot cuts from the tee to the downfield camera as reeal smooth unlike some others I've seen. And people were saying they don't like the commentary, I like it, I think DeBois was funny as hell when he was William III the British guy

jenpadham

is that a question or a statement? I think that 90 minutes are amazingly awesome, but you can't drink them all the time or in great quantity. DFH and Stone are tied as my favorite brewers. However, on Christmas Eve, my boyfriend and I sampled one of each of these DFH specialty beers - the Golden Shower (Pilsner), Pangea (Ale that tastes like ginger), Fort (raspberry beer), and the Chicory Stout. Expensive, but worth it.

Jen, sorry for the thread drift. But, I'm sure you know that a good brew makes for a better viewing experience. Nothing like drinking a fine microbrew while watching my favorite disc golf DVD!
I wrote up a review for your video, posted below.
-----

Imagine it: you pull into your home course, and step out of the car to see Valerie Jenkins walking to the first tee. A car pulls in next to you, and out step Jay and Des Reading. Hello, pleasure to meet you! Heading over to the practice green, and out of the winny comes Avery Jenkins. After bashfully introducing myself to one of the best players in the game (and 2006 POY, imho), I observe another World Champion (Nate Doss) make his way out of the winny and head to the practice green. I shake the champs hand. It must be strange meeting people who know who you are all the time.
The best disc golfers in the world were on my home course, and I was at Disc Golf University. These incredibly cool people allowed me to follow them around the course for two days of practice rounds. As a casual golfer, I learned more in two days than in the two years prior. Over the course of the next few days, I would have the pleasure of meeting most of the world-class players in the field of the 2006 Skylands Classic. What an incredible weekend! Even better, some of my friends took the responsibility to digitally archive the event for me to relive over and over again.

The very best disc golfers in the world assembled in Warwick NY for what turned out to be an incredible display of disc golf talent and skill. The Warwick layout includes two sets of tees and two sets of baskets, covering a variety of shots and golf challenges including raw D, rollers, and curving air shots of all kinds. Despite the rain that poured the second round, the worlds best rose to the occasion, putting on remarkable performances. After the first day of competition, the battle was fierce; with players on the two top cards in Open all capable of taking the title. Dave Feldburg must have really enjoyed himself at the Players party on Saturday night, because he played on Sunday with both barrels loaded. His shots were pure, and his putt rarely missed; separating him from the rest of the field. The final round may be the best I have ever seen. Dave Feldburg and Nate Doss went shot for shot, each birdying the first six holes. Unbelievable! Right behind them were the games best two players, Ken and Barry.

The action at this tournament was phenomenal. Then, add to that the army of volunteers who were taking video on hand-held cameras, and the millions of hours Jen spent processing all that footage. BY FAR, this video represents the most professional and expert editing and processing of the actual footage that I have seen in a DG video. It is hard for me to believe that everything was shot with (relatively) inexpensive cameras; the final product is of superior quality to all of the disc golf videos I have seen. Very professional video processing and editing that is truly a pleasure to watch.
Three of our local professional disc golfers provide the commentary for this video. Steve, John, and Lesli sound very natural, and quite informative and funny in creating commentary for this events footage. If you know them, you will get a whole lot more of the inside jokes and little things that make it laugh out loud funny. Good stuff! William Goodpull is so funny! (Example: William G: (to Brinster) I didnt know you played this game; Brinster: every once in awhile I can put it together; William G: oh, but not there, I see) You three did an awesome job on the commentary.

I would strongly recommend this video to any disc golfer or as a gift for any disc golfer. Especially considering the price of most of the other disc golf videos on the market, this video is a bargain. It is easily worth twice what it costs, heck, dance of the disc golfers alone is worth $20! For the price of a movie, or a large pizza you can own one of the best disc golf DVDs available. What are you waiting for?!?! Order yours at: http://www.dgflicks.com/order%20.html

The 2006 Brent Hambrick Memorial Open DVD
I enjoy filming Barry Schultz and was pleased to see him in a group that included Steve Brinster, Avery Jenkins and Dave Feldberg. See these guys shoot the whole 27 hole course and the final safari 9 with Steve Rico who jumped up from the THIRD card......It was 96 degrees with 'little to no' wind all day....grueling. The first DVD is 1 hour and 20 minutes (it is the lead card/final 27 holes of regulation), the second DVD is over an hour and is the safari 9. I added highlights from the awards ceremony and video outakes that include footage of the womens playoff round. When I do my EXTREME editing I get to study the styles of the world's best.....what a treat... I commentated the first disc knowing that there was very little dialouge in the group and limited gallery noise. The safari 9 DVD has an enthusiastic gallery so I limited my commentery to allow the gallery chatter/cheering/commentery a larger stage. Both dvds feature a lot of background and nature noises in an attempt to capture the mood of the event and give the viewer a feel for what it would be like to be there...(sweating profusely) As usual, I insert graphics at the appropriate places with hole and score stats....I am hard pressed to film events as I prefer playing them....enjoy....Among the DVDs I've produced and offer for sale, the 1st Players Cup ,2005, 2 DVDs (Entire Lead Card Final Round plus holes 5-18 of the second (of 3) round) , Climo Shoots the Gran Canyon, shot in February of 2006 in Brooksville Florida.....The CHAMP shooting 27 doubles holes of extreme terrain with a a crew that includes Brad Hammock, J-Bird, and Tony Gerling...(2 DVDs, 2 plus hours)<<www.channelzdj.com

i just came apon the trailer for this DVD and it brought up a question.
Why was all the womens play cut all togeather? theres a bit in the trailer

Feb 28 2007, 09:54 AM
What do you mean "cut all together?"

There are 6 rounds you can watch on the DVD. Open, top two cards, rounds 2, 3 and 4; and then Pro Women rounds 2, 3, and 4.

Interesting. I have never used the Play All function there. I always go to Rounds and then pick which round I want to watch.

I'm a huge fan of the Dance of the Golfers though.

True. On the flip side, maybe you guys need to do some more funny stuff so there's enough footage for it to be longer...

in a couple of the rounds,it seemed that the commentator was ahead of the players.Other than that the video is perfect,3 rounds of nothing but shot by shot golf, what more can you ask for.I play golf as well so I watch some golf tournaments on TV,this video is about the closest thing so far to watching an actual tournament. Now if it was just televised! ;)

Jen...good stuff! Fun to watch, looks great, even the sometimes annoying commentary is ok. I hope to see future releases from you guys! Heck, come on down to my tourney and film away! Catch a PDGA C Tier in all it's glory!

Am I one of the only people out there who loves Debois doing William Goodpull? I laugh my butt off everytime. Maybe it's because I know the guys up there that it's funny, but the 1st half of the 2nd round is great. Like when Yeti gets up on the tee, "Ohh, what is that?"

I think my favorite part of the commentary is, I think, in the Silver to Blue round on hole 5. You see a putt come up over the cliff and make it in. "Who dat?!" "Nate DOSSSSSS!!"

Mar 05 2007, 06:28 PM
From the same round:
"Dave Feldburg eats putts like this for breakfast."

another favorite:
"Dave is now dishing out smoothies like a smoothie machine". :D

I agree that the commentary is hilarous and very well done.

Anyone who is has not seen this DVD, yer missing out!
Hands down, my favorite disc golf DVD!

From my standpoint, the Goodpull commentary is out of context no matter whether some think it's humorous. You wouldn't have Monty Python doing the commentary at a PGA ball golf event. So, having that type of commentary for what is supposed to be one of our elite competitions doesn't seem appropriate. Since MSDGC is not one of our elite competitions, having that type of humor would fit into the context of their event DVD.

From Disc Golf Magazine (I assume written by Dave Henrikson):

"At first listen, I found the approach completely annoying, but I stuck with it. I do like how the "man from Mars" perspective forces Brinster to give the viewer some background on where we are, who we're watching, and what we're seeing. Again, anything that offers the viewers insight into the game and its best players can't be bad (although, please lose the accent!)"

Define 'our.' If you're referring to the sport of disc golf and not the PDGA, the MSDGC is certainly one of the elite competitions in all of tournament disc golf.

When we see Phil Mickelson coming out on Sunday at the Masters with a shaved head from the previous night's activities and John Daly even bigger than normal from winning a pie eating contest, then I might consider retracting the remark. Until then, MSDGC is just a disc golf promoter offering big money to have elite players come to their facility to have fun and compete on good courses. Nothing wrong with that and I'm sure our top players would love to have several more of these events. But the standards for an elite event should be higher. October Friz (never been there either) has had as many elite players at their events over the years and never pretended to be anything more than a big fun party with good competition.

Lighten up, CK! :D

Having "color" commentators is nothing new in sports.

The "man from mars" approach was purposeful and effective, and was NOT just for the heck of it.

How many sparks does it take for William to be coaxed foward?!? LOL!

I realize it's the nature of our sport. But that's also where we'll stay if even we don't take it seriously at least for our National Tour events and Majors.

A proper divisional structure will go a lot farther to raise the standards for elite events than the elimination of head shaving and pie eating.

Mar 06 2007, 09:25 AM
This thread is about the fine effort Jen made with the Skylands DVD, not the sidetrack about the MSDGC. My point, which got lost in there was just that the irreverent slant of the MSDGC event seems more appropriate for the type of humor you see on their DVD than on one that's covering one of our top events. If you want British accented commentary, get our own Derek Robbins or Finchie (ball golf).

Ok, in the long run, I agree with both sides of the arguement about whether John's commentary is appropriate or not. I know that the people who enjoy it are people who know John personally, I think it is funny but it is not very professional.... The Skylands dvd was my first disc golf dvd endevour and I learned A LOT from making the dvd. I am not sorry that I took a chance with something a little different, but this year you will probably not get 9 holes of GoodPull commentary.

Also - John and Steve were completely SOBER when recording the men's commentary, but maybe a little silly from being overworked......

the goodpull commentary has actually grown on me after a few viewings, i think it's pretty funny now....

Pair Goodpull with a commentator sporting a Bostonian accent on the MSDGC DVD and let the fun begin. :)

I think these DVD's are made for golfers to enjoy, and on the Skylands they were just having fun. I do agree that the commentary was not totally straight foward and yes that might make a potential sponsor look down on the sport as not being serious, but I think Jen was just catering to the crowd. I in my opinon Skylands was better than any of the Worlds DVD's that I have seen. Those are made for sponsors to watch, but please let her do the DVD next year cause it was great.
