Time for a new thread! The old subject title was outdated.

For those of you that are interested in checking out what's been said and done in the past, the old thread covered 22 pages. Here's my attempt to link you there, http://www.pdga.com/msgboard/showflat.php?Cat=&Board=Courses&Number=412436&page=1&view=collapsed&sb=5&o=&fpart=22

The "NEW" High Country Disc Golf Course at Ashe Co. Park, in Jefferson, NC. is now listed on the PDGA Course Directory!

Here is the detailed version of the course description and directions..........

DESCRIPTION OF THE COURSE........

It just might be the highest course East of the Rockies? It promises to elevate your game up to 3200 ft.! Nestled in a beautiful country setting in the Scenic Appalachian Mountains, THE HIGH COUNTRY DISC GOLF COURSE at ASHE COUNTY PARK, in JEFFERSON, NC. boasts stunning long range views, lots of elevation changes, water hazards, OB's, and a good mixture of open and wooded holes. With the help of legendary course designer Harold Duvall and Innova Disc Golf, this course is no doubt going to become one of the BEST!
11 of the 18 future hole's are currently playable, but with AMATEUR and PRO tee's on each, it's still well worth the drive, and "putt". The whole course plays both extremely fun and very challenging! The course kiosk and sign's should make it easy to find your way around. Maps and scorecards will be available soon. Overall "roughed in" course completion date is scheduled to be as soon as humanly possible. *VOLUNTEER'S AND SPONSORS ARE NEEDED!
Ashe County Park information, www.ashecountygov.com/ParksandRec/index.htm (http://www.ashecountygov.com/ParksandRec/index.htm), or (336) 982-6185. Hours: Open year round, dawn to dusk. Other Features: restrooms, ball fields, play grounds, basketball, pavilions, picnic areas, fishing, hiking, horseshoes, volleyball, tennis, RC track, and more. Camping, hotels, and New River nearby! Be prepared for rapidly changing weather and windy conditions. For the local weather forecast, goto www.asheweather.com (http://www.asheweather.com)

DIRECTIONS TO THE PARK...............

**From Boone, NC: Travel East on Hwy. 421 (about 10 mins.) to Hwy 221 North. Turn Left onto Hwy. 221 North. **From Wilkesboro, NC: Travel West on Hwy 421 (about 25 mins.) to Hwy 221 North (just past Parkway). Turn right onto Hwy. 221 North.
Take Hwy. 221 North towards Jefferson, NC. for about 15-20 mins. Go straight thru first intersection w/ light (Hwy junction 221 and 163). Soon after, you will come to another intersection w/ light. *If you need to do any shopping, this is pretty much last call (Wal-Mart, food, etc.). Take a right, and get what makes you happy! If you're already happy, continue North on Hwy. 221 for a couple more miles to the next intersection w/ light. That should be Long St. Take a left onto Long St. It dead ends pretty quickly into S. Main St. (no sign). There should be a Dollar Mart gas station on your right. Take a right onto S. Main St. and go straight thru the next intersection w/ light (Yamaha dealer, Carolina Printing on corner's). Once you pass thru that intersection the road changes to N. Main St. Just keep on going for a couple more miles until you see the Ashe Co. Park Sign on your left. Take a left onto Ashe Park Rd. and follow to park. Turn left into park, follow road around till you find a parking area w/ the course kiosk and Hole #1 nearby. Enjoy! Drive Safely, Hwy. 421 is a notorious speed zone!

Please feel free to give me a call if you need more info., or if you'd like to help out in any way. Or make a suggestion, or just to play.

Hope to see you all down the fairway real soon!

What is the deal down there with you NC? Do you actually do doubles on Sunday or just play casual? I should already have the ace pool up to six by myself without competing.

What's the plan for the Ice Bowl. Format. Course 12 or 18. 1 round 2 rounds. Can driver or money. Hospitality. What r the perks except seeing Wendy.

BooneTOdd
Dec 05 2006, 11:58 AM
Funny BS!

Still not really sure what the format is going to be for the 1st. Annual High Country Ice Bowl (?). It all depends on the circumstances (course completion, number of participants, weather, $, etc.).

What I'm presently leaning towards is.......

One, 9 hole, singles round from the short's to get things warmed up, $1 mulligan's before play, $2 mulligan's during play. Then, 18 hole's of random draw or arranged double's, no mulligan's. $15 entry get's you a ICE BOWL disc and a free shot(s)(?) at the "Freeze Your Throw Off" Charity Prize rally at the end, $10 entry without disc. $10 of each entry fee will go to Charity, in this case, A Partnership For Children. All mulligan money goes to the Charity as well. For the overall winner's (cumulative scores for both rounds), I'm trying to get donated some ski passes. Not sure if I'm going to be successful with that or not, and I also don't know how many winner's there will be. Maybe only the top 3 (?) Shouldn't really matter, because it's a Ice Bowl.

I'm really counting on donation's to make this event an entising one to participate in. There will be some ctp's out there, and maybe a chance at winning a practice basket if you hit an Ace. At the end of the day, everyone who participated will have a chance at winning several nice prizes at the "Freeze Your Throw Off" Charity rally. Basically, I'm hoping to set up several basket's within 150ft.(most likely) from the pavilon. From there take your pick at what CTP prize you wish to go for. 1 free throw, maybe more (?). After that it's going to cost you a $1 per throw. Sounds like it's getting expensive? I'm really hoping to make the prizes worth your few bucks. Again, all the proceeds go to charity!

Beyond that, I'm open for suggestions? Nothing has to be set in stone until Feb. 17th. Like I said, it all depends on the circumstance's.

No doubt, there will be some kind of after party somewhere to warm up and be jolly, and eat some charitiable chili (?).

Obviously, No polar plunge this year, due to liability and crazyness factors. Maybe next year.

If you'd like to donate something or participate in the 1st. Annual High Country ICE BOWL please let me know ASAP! The Partnership For Children does have a tax-deductable ID # if you would like it?

Thanks BS! Are you in the Christmas spirit or what?

Should I bring a crock of MY AWARD WINNING CHILI.

That would be cool as long as it's not left over's from the week before. :D Orginally, I wanted to incooperate a chili cookoff, but seeing that most of the player's will be traveling, I thought it wouldn't be prudent, not at this juncture. But, feel free to if you'd like. :) Who's bringing the frito's?

Dec 06 2006, 01:47 PM
So I hear you also got the hook up on a very generous donation for the "New" High Country DGC. Thanks for wheeling and dealing with the boy's down in Hickory to make it happen.

Hickory's UFO Club (Glenn C. Hilton Memorial Park) has offered their support by donating $75! Every little bit helps! I plan to put that money towards a hole sponsorship, which in turn, goes toward the overall cost of building the course. How sweet it is!

Ashe Park has now been giving finanical support by several of our neighboring Western NC Disc Golf friends and even abroad........
1. Mel and Cara Jone's, $700 (2 hole sponsorships)
2. Tom Owens and The Gallery Woodworking Co., $350
3. Matt Dewhirst and Capercorn Construction, $350
4. The Powell Family, $350
5. Rick Rothstein and The Disc Golf World News, $350
www.discgolfworld.com (http://www.discgolfworld.com)
6. WNC DGC in Asheville, $350 www.wncdiscgolf.com (http://www.wncdiscgolf.com)
7. Yadkinville Disc Golf Club, $350
8. Dr. Pepper Bottling Company, $350
9. Hickory's UFO Club, $75

I can't thank you all enough! That leave's us with a deficit of $1,275 roughly. So, if you'd like to help out, and see your name on the list. We're asking $350 per hole sponsorship. Your sponsorship will be good for a 2 year period, and won't start until the competion of the course. It include's a small advertisement on the course kiosk board, on the designated hole tee sign, on the back of the scorecards, possibly on the basket, recognition by local new's media resource's through promoting future events, a free membership to the club once the local scene develops more and it get's established, and the best part might just be the bragging rights and karma throughout the duration of time.

What more can I say, other then you won't be sorry. And if you are, I'll give you your money back. Only 9 more hole's available, so get while you can! The future looks bright for disc golf in the High Country. Western NC rocs!

I know it's a ways, away, but the sooner the better as far as I'm concerned.

I'd like to offer you all the opportunity to name the upcoming Summer Annual High Country PDGA tournament?

There is no prize or royalities associated with this, I just thought I'd throw it out there for the fun of it.

Here are some of my nominee's.......... :)

1. The High Country Throw-down
2. The Cool Summer Mtn. Classic
3. The High Country Classic
4. The High Country Invitational
5. The High Country Summer Super Bowl
6. The High Country Challenge
7. The Summer Chill Challenge
8. The High Country Cool down Open
9. The High Country Beat the Heat Battle
10. Appalachian Hillbilly "Throw"down

Get the idea! So, let's hear them?

Or, if you like one of the one's I already came up with, go ahead and cast your vote?

It might be fun to judge a winning name at the High Country ICE BOWL, Feb. 17th, 2007.

Then again, this might just be a waste of time and the Park director might claim the fame. /msgboard/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

Oh well, let's hear what you can come up with anyways?

Remember, the name of the course is, The High Country Disc Golf Course, and it's at Ashe County Park, in Jefferson, NC. It's also in the Appalachian Mtns. That may give you some idea's.

Did you guys know that Ashe County's #1 cash crop is Christmas trees?
Just one more reason to come up and play the "new" High Country DGC @ Ashe Co. Park, Jefferson, NC. :)

How about a tournament of the trees? Held on Thanksgiving weekend up here? Any conflicts? Winner's could get trees to take home, and we could play for world hungry or something like that (?)?

Big wheel keep on turnin! :)

JL19095
Dec 09 2006, 12:31 AM
YES, I did know that! If you have ever driven thru some backroads of Ashe and Grayson counties you can see the tree farms everywhere.

There is a conflict with a Thanksgiving tournament held in Chattanooga every year, but you probably wont be competing for the same players. I like the idea of winning a tree but lets make sure it is a LIVE tree and not hacked off.

How about the
Mt. Jefferson Morning Dew Open
High Country Cool Breeze Classic
New River Native Splash

It isn't supposed to last long.

Season's been weak thus far. I hear people are breaking their neck's out there not having enough snow.

Must be Global warming!

Better off playing Ashe Park! BP and I are going to attempt a 1 oclock tee time on Sat. Be my first drive in over a month.

Have fun with the BapSter but I'd rather be on a Mountain somewhere. Already getting burned out and the disc golf season hasn't started or finished yet.

I have a little "head's up" information for you all regarding the inugural High Country PDGA tournament (July 14, 15th), and places to stay!

This is kind of important because July is also the time of year everybody else wants to be here. So, place's to stay aren't going to be easy to come by if you're not prepared months ahead of time.

Your best and cheapest option is going to be camping at the park. Not sure what the deal is yet, but I can tell you that the park doesn't have shower's. Just really nice bathroom facilities, maybe a hose, and a chilly, but refreshing disc eating pond. Electricity and grills will also be available to camper's. But, if you can't handle all the FUN, then here is your other immediate option.

I've put on hold 15 room's at the overall best hotel within 5 mins. to the park, the Nation's INN. Since it is there busy season, they will only hold these room's until June 13th. The cost is $73 a night + taxes, for two people. You also get the continental breakfest with that. The Nation's INN # is (336) 246-2080.

Other then that, you're own your own. There are several really nice rental cabin's in the area, but they are going to cost you.

As far as food, resturant's, river's, Mtns., gas, view's, banks, wildlife, and other need's (Wal-mart), everything is within 5 mins. of the course.

I know it's early, but better to be safe then sorry!

Ashe Park is a nice place to have a birthday! Should also be somes surprises there waiting for you. Hopefully good ones, like a fortunate roll, but it definitely won't be a piece of cake. :D Hope you can make it!

I just found out that the park WILL BE charging a small camping fee the weekend of the tourney, July 13,14, 15th. $5 per person, per day.

For those of you that may be able to make it a 3 day weekend. Maybe that Friday afternoon we can plan a group float down the river. Then follow it up with a round of double's that evening (?).

Still need to find a name for the tournament?

So you like the idea of floating/paddling on that Friday, OH KNOW  it's the 13th! I'll make sure to tell one of the local's to fire up his chainsaw that night in the woods! :D,and have someone come out screaming bloody murder! :D Then again, it just might be Harold for real finishing the course up to his liking. :D

Again how much for bus space

Jack, you need a bike.

Call me, and we'll WORK something out (on the course that is).

On Sunday, Randy, Tim, and I built some bleacher's by hole 9's short tee. :) Nothing fancy, but they serve their purpose. Other then that, just a few little things were accomplished. Alt. Hole 9 now tee's from below the playground.

Was the 8ft. Innova flag on Hole 2 still up, or did the wind's blow it away? It looks super cool! :) Any frozen over pond shot's?

High Country Ice Bowl only 2 week's away!!!!! Feb. 17th.!

I have more good news! We have another hole sponsor to be happy about. The Coyote Kitchen in Boone, in the strip mall next to Wal-Mart, is going to sponsor a hole. I believe that make's number 11 of 18! :)

We now have more hole sponsor's then we do holes. :D :( :o;)

That's saying a lot in a lot of different ways. :D:) If you want to sponsor a hole on this course, you better do it soon! I know of several people that could all of a sudden bum rush me. :D;)

The pond had about 6" of ice on it today, and with temps. going down into the single digits tonight, it'll probably be like 8" by tomorrow. The park director was actually brave enough to walk across it, or should I say crazy enough.

If it weren't so darn cold outside, I'd have to say it would be a good time to practice your drive from Hole 3's long tee! :D I'm looking forward to it soon! Big ol skip off the ICE for an ACE! If that happens, shoot, I'll jump in! :D

Hope it's still FROZEN in two weeks for the inaugural High Country ICE BOWL! Sat., Feb. 17th! :) Lots of prizes to win, hope to see you all there for the good cause! :)

That is the story up here. If it isn't tied down, it's fair game. Last night my grill tried running away, but it didn't get far. Unfortunately, the only crap we get in our yard is other peoples trash. /msgboard/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

I heard something really funny the other day.

Due to the climate of political correctness now pervading America, Kentuckians, Tennesseans and West Virginians will no longer be referred to as "HILLBILLIES."

You must now refer to them as APPALACHIAN-AMERICANS. :D:D

Someone that likes NC and VA must have thought of that. :D

The High Country ICE BOWL is going to be way to cool! No doubt about that.

I just got word from Domino's Pizza that they will also contribute 10 pizzas. That means with Pizza Huts donation we will have 20 hopefully HOT pizza's to feast on inbetween rounds!

I also got downtown West Jefferson's local Coffee Shop, Bohemia, to donate some coffee that morning. So, get there early if you want a cup!

And, our newest course sponsor, The Coyote Kitchen in Boone, is going to donate a gift certificate and t-shirt as well.

Most likely the food and drinks will be offered as free to ICE BOWL participant's, but donations will be encouraged.

I will post all the ICE BOWL details again soon. If you have anything you'd like to contribute, the more the merrier. Just let me know?

Hope to see you all there! Only 8 days away! Sat., Feb. 17th!

Henry aced hole 6, his first throw of the day!
Todd Lions aced hole 15, representing the High C!

Lots of other good shots!

Chili was great! Ate so much it kicked my #$*&$! later. :D

is there a "fast" way to Jefferson? Mapquest tells me 85 miles takes 2 hours??

421N to 221N (the directions I already gave you) is the easiest way to go/explain. There is a faster way though. Personally, I like taking hwy. 16 from Wilksboro (the mountain way), I think it's a little faster if you know how to drive the mountains, or you don't get stuck behind someone from Florida.

From hwy. 16 you can either take hwy. 163 to West Jefferson and the junction of Hwy 221. From there follow the original directions (go right). Or, and I'm not sure about this one. You can stay on Hwy 16 until it deadends at Sheets bridge (New River). Take a left there and go a couple of miles (towards Jefferson). Once you pass the first traffic light look for Wade Bare Rd. on your right. Turn right and go until it dead ends (a couple more miles). Then take a left, and Ashe Park Rd. and the sign will be on your right after a short while. Follow Ashe Park Rd. to the park. I think that is it. I hope you find your way there! Call me if you have any problems. (336) 649-0888 cell

All I've got to say is Best Ever!!! Perfect IB conditions - freezing as in ground frozen most of the day, tolerable winds, snow showers all day and snowing to beat the band during the awards ceremony. Thanks so much to Todd and Wendy for bringing disc golf to the high country. Awesome views, awesome course and only going to get better when you move into the woods. And did I hear you say over $800 collected for the kids?

When the weather warms up a bit, we needs to get de boats ta flotin'. Lots of pretty water between here and there. Y'all give each other a hug for all of us.

What a time! Was great to meet all Y'all, I had a blast. Next time I'll be staying the night cause the drive home SUCKED! The snow was fun to play in, but not to drive home in, took us 3+ hours. Hope everyone made it home OK. Thanks Todd and Wendy for a great time and for all your hard work putting this thing together. See you again sometime.

Had a great time up in those mountains. If you are planning on playing the tourney in July you might want to get up there and check it out first. They have some fast greens. I also can't wait for my River trip with Wendy. I can take her to Jefferson's finest with the $180 I won yesterday with an ace on #2.

Congratulations to all the winners, especially Jamie Arnold who made his way into the High Country History books as the Inaugural High Country ICE BOWL CHAMP! You deserve it brother! Good shootin! :)

I enjoyed ever minute of it! I think my most memoriable moment though was seeing everybody at the end of the day casting lines and anything else they could find out onto the frozen pond trying to retrieve theirs and other peoples discs. It looked more like a very strange trout derby. :D I wish had been able to get a picture, it was classic! ;)

Hope to be able to do it again next year, but of course, even better! Thank you all again! :)

Thanks man. And as much as I enjoyed it, none of it would have been possible without your sweat equity and Wendy's patience with same. Honestly though the highlight of the day for me was being able to retrieve my trusty Dr Dyed Champ Cobra Ace Disc off the ice before we ever started the first round. And the tall, slender dude that recovered my Tim McNeill mini was a definite high point as well. Just wanted to let everyone know that we decided on "The High Country Throwdown" to be the official name of the annual PDGA tournament to be held this summer, July 14,15th.

Thanks for all the creative suggustions. We're gonna save "The Appalachian Open" for when Boone has a course.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
If you haven't heard by now, the new High Country DGC, in Jefferson, NC. is shaping up nicely. It plays both extremely FUN and Challenging! Nestled in the beautiful scenic Appalachian Mtns. this new stop on the PDGA Summer Tour is going to be quite a treat to beat the effects of global warming.

Here are a few "notes of interest" to look forward too.

Harold Duvall will most likely be the Tournament director for this event.

Camping will be permitted at the park for a $5 charge per person, per night. There are no showers at the park, but it does offer really nice bathroom facilities, most likely a hose, and a chilly, but very refreshing disc eating pond! Electricity and grills are also available. Live Bluegrass on Sat. night!

It you can't handle all that FUN, and you'd like to rest your bones in a hotel room, you are going to want to take action ASAP. The summer months are considered to be our busiest time of the year, so finding a place to stay won't be an easy task if you don't make your plans months in advance.

I've put on hold 15 rooms at the overall best hotel within 5 mins. to the park, the Nations INN. Again, since it is there busy season, they will only hold these rooms until June 13th. The cost is $73 a night + taxes, for two people. You also get the bla continental breakfest with that. The Nations INN # is (336) 246-2080. *Please let them know you are a disc golfer.

Other then that, you're own your own. There are several really nice rental cabins in the area, but they are going to cost you. If you have friends in Boone, your drive time is approx. 30 mins. away.

As far as food, resturants, rivers, Mtns., gas, views, banks, wildlife, and other needs (Wal-mart), everything is within 5 mins. of the course. We may even have lunch catered each day (?).

For those of you that may be able to make a 3 day weekend out of it. Maybe that Friday afternoon we can plan a group float down the river. Then follow it up with a round of doubles that evening (?).

This tournament should be a lot of FUN, and fill up very fast, so stay tuned for early reg. info.

Also, No Dogs will be allowed. Sorry!

Hope to see all your smilin faces there!

Please feel free to give me a call, or email if you have any questions.

Thursday evening doubles has officially tee'd off in the High Country! :)

8 people this week 4-12 played;
Todd L., Todd R., Randy S., Tim, Ben W., Matt B, Daniel Q., and myself.
Weather conditions; Mostly sunny, cold, and super Windy! 20-40 mph. gusts!

Front 9 consisted of 1-7 short, then Alt. 8 and 9.
Back 9 consisted of 1-7 long, then short 8 and 9.

Randy and I had a two shot lead going into hole 7 long (with only 2 holes left). We bogied, they par'd, we par'd, they birdied. We had ourselves a THROWDOWN on the mountain going into hole 9! We both managed to get our drives across the road, but the Eagle op wasn't looking good. But wait! Todd L. pulls out his gun and fires it 70-80 ft. into the basket for the Eagle and win! Un-freakin-believable!

Scores
Todd L and Todd R -8 $12 each
Todd and Randy -7 $4 each
Ben W. and Daniel +1
Matt B and Tim +3

Looking forward to doing it again next week! And, seeing what Harold's going to come up with for the back 9! ;)

Current ACE POOL $8 !!!
