Well, guess who's got the 2008 ICE BOWL SHORT GAME trophy?

Matt Smart! Shooting a 40 was 7 throws better than anyone else, so now he has 2 Short Game trophies on his wall! The wind was blowing around medium speed, and the chill never quite wore off, but we had 25 players show up for the SHORT GAME. Big fun! Cool short course, and pizza for lunch (they even brought it out to the course for us!! Thanks PIZZA HUT!!)

Another "NICE BOWL"!!! Very good weather, a little windy, but not too bad. 64 players signed up to play, many others hanging around watching and partaking in good food, beer, and sodas. I believe we hit our cash goal of $2,000.00, but we may be a little short on the pounds of food (I'm guessing somewhere around 600 or 700 pounds). I'll get it weighed at the HIGH PLAINS FOOD BANK later today.

Another good ICE BOWL year for the TEXAS PANHANDLE FLYING DISC ASSOCIATION!! Thanks everyone!

Final charity results:

$2,000.00 in cash donation
869 pounds of food donated

64 players (main round)
25 players (Short Game)

You know things are going good when the staff at the Food Bank know who you are when you walk in their front door! It has been 1 year since I was last at their office, and they still remember who I am and what group I'm with. Thanks everyone for stepping up with big donations!!!!

I hope someone got a group photo or at least a picture of all the food.

Very nice! Impresive $'s and #'s. I again had plans to make it as I had some work up that way and I could have tied things in very nicely. But a hot prospect in Farmington became the critical issue...so my girlfriend and I did a three day ski weekend instead (Durango, Wolf). I'm so busy now that I don't know if I'll remember how to throw a Frisbee (I mean disc). :D Send a flyer for the next event and I'll get it in our course signs.

Thanks! It takes a good bit of work, but it's worth it. And when we combine that with what was raised in Lubbock, it looks this whole area really steps up to donate.

Yeah, how many times have we heard that same old story, "I was planning on going, but, well, I just didn't." If you would have made it, you would have been the other Lubbock player to show up. :p

Very good feedback coming in about the SHORT GAME! Seems like it was a bigger hit than I imagined. Maybe next year we can set up 18 baskets and do 2 rounds for a 36 hole championship. :) It's a very fun game (even with the chilly wind :D), and it doesn't take a lot of equipment.

I've got to find a way to get all the work done earlier so I can play in next year's SHORT GAME CHAMPIONSHIP!! I'm gunning for your trophy next year, Matt! ;)

Good work! How many showed up and what was the weather like?

With the lay-out at Cal Young Park, you could probably set up a pretty cool SHORT GAME and get a little extra cash out of everyone to add to the donation. We were able to add $100.00 just from the SHORT GAME in the morning (actually it was $130.00 because Pat A. donated all of his prize money that he won). Also (I forgot to add this part), we raised $250.00 from the day before when we played the big course on the other side of the park. Thanks Matt and everyone who helped with that project!

Thanks Rock. Overall the ice Bowl was a huge success! You put alot of work into it every year and it really pays off. Thanks!

Maybe we can get together and set up a Short Game Fundraiser for the Shootout.

March 16 is one week after the time-change. It's a third Sunday. Any suggestions for a locale? Medi Park would provide lots of elevation change, water, and DRAMA ;)

Maybe Palo Duro Canyon? I don't remember ever tossing a disc into the Red River! I was out there about 2 weeks ago, and I talked to one of the Rangers about group rates. She seemed like it would OK, but we would need to get the OK from the head Ranger (who wasn't there that day). The Mesquite Campground (the farthest from the entrance) would be a pretty good location, especially if anyone wanted to camp overnight. Also, if we can get enough interest, the Cow Camp Cabins would be a really cool site, but it would be best if we got enough players to rent all 4 of the cabins (since golfers tend to get a little rowdy and loud :D). The main drawback about PDC is the no beer thing.

What are the chances of becoming a 3 time Short Game Champion! Looking forward to next year!

A 3 time Champ? I don't know about THAT! Could be a bunch of peoples practicing and working out just aiming at that target on the back of your shirt :D

We had 46 people show. Weather was fantastic. 70, sunny and just a little breezy. We did unlimited mulligans for both rounds and raised $640 on mulligans alone.

SHORT GAME action would be cool. I was thinking we might do something different for next year. We will see. Thats the last thing on my mind right now...getting our Park Expansion Series off the ground is #1!! (Can you say...2 courses at Cal Young?!) :D

There is a new website up for Abilene Disc Golf. Click on the link in my signature to get the scoop on the disc golf scene in Abilene. (hey, that rhymes :-)

The regional course info page is the same one that goes out with Chains of the Plains. I know there are several updates that need to be made, if you see one let me know.

Also, there are sponsorship opportunities for the new Park expansion project. NO obligations, just an FYI if anyone is interested.

The Woodman Spring Fling is just around the corner. April 12 - 2 rounds - NO OB - lunch provided - low entry fee.

I think Jess is capping the event at 60 and probably already has half the spots filled with Woodman members...so talk to Jess soon to make sure you dont get left out. Hes going to have the same great items to raffle off and big players packs.

Look for the Woodman thread on the PDGA tournament section for details.

I want challenge the clubs of Texas. Texas Womens Championships is April 26 & 27 and we want to present the opportunity to highlight your club during the TWC. We started the girly station experience and we want the clubs of Texas to improve on that idea.
Last year was a very successful experience for the ladies and the girly station was a big part of that. Consider representing your club by having the best girly station. We have designated areas to best serve the ladies. Contact Ed Coffey or me and we will ensure a place in the action.
And of course we will accept any form of sponsorship. So if you cannot be involved in a girly station, then make sure to support the event with sponsorship, escorts or my favorite CASH. Behind every man is a lady, so dont miss the opportunity to back a lady. I will be the first to recognize support and the first to point out lack of involvement. SEND ME YOUR LADIES!

Allright! I'm back on! It was a tough choice but I decided to provide food and clothes for the family until I could scrape up enough to renew my PRO ($75.00!!! ) membership without sending us to the poor house. It was a very difficult fall and winter for my business so I had to forgo the ACE club membership this time. I'm sure the PDGA will survive without my little extra donation. Maybe some other time. :p ****, 20 years as a paying member. Hard to believe. What is there to show for all that time, effort, and money? Anyone coming in town today for the Shootout, we'll be doing our regular Thursday Handicap round from the BLUE TEES this afternoon at 6:00. Anyone can play regardless if you don't have an established handicap. $2.00 entry / $1.00 ACE POT (it starts somewhere around $140.00). It'll be a good chance to check out the BLUE TEES on the Disc Creek course.

You're welcome! I think you're not the only one in the doghouse because of Disc Golf. These kind of events seem to go hand-in-hand with domestic troubles. Most players don't realize the stress it puts on families who often put a lot of effort into making something good happen for very little return on their investment. I know I've witnessed it many, many times over the last 21 years of disc golf tournaments.

I've checked every day since Saturday, and the newspaper hasn't printed the letter I sent them about their idiot reporter who wants to label all Disc Golfers as users of the "wacky weed". I hope more players will send a letter to them (or the idiot reporter himself) and express their concerns about his under-handed, short-sighted comments about this game we are trying to grow.

I can't seem to get my comments posted. I tried a few times and it wont post. I sent my comments directly to the paper twice. Probably will do that once a week until I at least get a response back.

The thing that burns me up the most about that is he intentionally set that up to make disc golf look bad. He titled the article "3 must see events..." What, did he have something else besides disc golf in mind, then forgot about it and couldnt think of anything else to insert as the number 3 thing? (which doesnt make it right either) NO, he purposfully set that up and delivered disc golf at the end as "the punch line" to his article. Piece of doo-doo

Lahnert on the Wacky Weed?‏
From: john stewart ([email protected])
Sent: Sat 5/10/08 10:59 AM
To: [email protected]

In response to Lance Lahnert's 2 cents (05/08/08 - Section D) about the Budweiser/DisCrazy Shootout Disc Golf Tournament, it appears that you are the one that's doing the wacky weed. That event happened LAST weekend! If you go out there this weekend to watch, you're going to be very dissapointed. Take another hit of your "wacky weed" (or whatever you put in your pipe), and try to understand that this isn't your college life anymore. Almost 150 players from several different states attended the event and there was no evidence of your "wacky weed" that I saw (maybe because you weren't there?). I'm sure the sponsors of the event (Budweiser, DisCrazy, Monster Energy Drinks, Amarillo Parks & Rec. Dept., and many others)and the many local players that put in a lot of effort to get the facility ready for our guests do not appreciate your take on our sport.

You should check your facts before you start stereotyping everyone that enjoys playing Disc Golf. This game appeals to a very wide range of folks, from youngsters to the older generation. It is a very economical past-time since there are no greens fees, and the discs used for play cost less than $15.00 each. The course in Thompson Park is one of the best in the state, a very challenging lay-out that will test your skills with a flying disc. As a professional Disc Golfer for 18 years, I have been trying to grow the sport in this area, and stupid comments like yours do not help. If you need to get the correct facts on this rapidly growing sport, you can check with the Professional Disc Golf Association (www.pdga.com), or you can find me at the course and I'll provide you with enough facts to help you see the short-sightedness of your comments.

Heres what I sent:

Wow. Now, I'm sure you're an educated person. But, that was a very uneducated statement.

First mischaracterization:

Do people that play use "the wacky weed"? Sure do. Does the Texas Panhandle Flying Disc Association promote, encourage, or condone the use of "the wacky weed"? Absolutely not. Nor does the PDGA. People that use "the wacky weed" are going to use no matter where they are. Its extremely disappointing that an educated member of a local media outlet chooses to make ignorant statements that make disc golf look like a "wacky weed" haven. If you had taken just a brief amount of time to do some research, you might have discovered E.D.G.E, which is dedicated to promoting disc golf as a fun, easy to learn, lifetime activity to kids. You might have learned about the Ice Bowl, a national initiative that raises about a quarter of a million dollars annually for hundreds of local charities (including the High Plains Food Bank). Instead, you drew on your limited knowledge and attached a very negative connotation to a sport that has tried to rid itself of that very connotation for a long time. Thanks for nothing. The Amarillo chapter of Woodman of the World sponsors a disc golf tournament every year. Does that mean they promote or use "the wacky weed"?

Second mischaracterization:

Is Disc Golf a sport? More than you obviously know. Who knows how many interested individuals or families you turned away by making disc golf out to be nothing more than a "wacky weed" infested recreation. Had you come out to that disc golf tournament, you would have discovered some of the highest caliber play our "sport" has to offer. Disc Golf is a fun, low-impact, recreational activity that anyone of any age can enjoy. But, there is most certainly a competitive side to it. It combines many of the same physical and mental skills needed to be competitive in any sport. Come out and try it before you knock it.

I challenge you to go watch a tournament. The next big one in Amarillo is in August. There are plenty of videos on the Internet and other resources on www.PDGA.com (http://www.PDGA.com) to draw from as well. My name is Jerry Kingston and I am a proud member of the PDGA (#23837). Feel free to contact me if you have any questions or comments. 325-829-6579. The next time you comment about disc golf, reign in that condescending attitude and let people go out and judge disc golf for themselves.

Ok! We're sort of set now. We got some new sleves put in to replace the torn up ones on #9 and #14, and a new LONG position for #7 (it really needed it to be more of a PAR 4). So the old LONG #7 will now be the new SHORT #7, making this hole the other PAR 4 on the Front 9 (#5 is now a PAR 3, thanks to the new "temporary over-flow parking lot").

Now the next project is to find a way to get #7, #10, and #17 locks un-stuck. Even with the good high quality locks we're still having problems keeping them in good working condition. Any suggestions?

Jun 24 2008, 05:08 PM
Is the sand the main issue? The caps on the key holes should help that...but, your right. I twisted 3 keys trying to unlock 7 baskets at the shootout. Besides putting grafite in the locks, I dont have any answer for that one

johnrock
Jun 24 2008, 05:59 PM
Manuel Rodriguez (from Irving, TX) helped us get these locks through his locksmith sales job. He suggested visiting one of his clients here (Ace Lock & Key) about any problems we might have. They recommended using Carburetor Spray cleaner. It works on most of the locks, but a few are stubborn. It seems the trouble is our crazy wind (sand and dirt get in tight spots when blown around constantly) combined with a little moisture gums up the interior of the lock body to the point they just don't want to work properly. I thought these new locks with the protective caps would do the trick, but we need something else. Possibly something like they did in Albuquerque when Roosevelt was rennovated.

Howdy Amarillo - Just want to give big props out to the people of Amarillo.
Sunday night I was driving from Durango to Lubbock. As we were approaching Amarillo a huge storm was brewing. It was a bit late and the crazy weather stopped any chance of a playing a round.
Then it HIT! As soon as we entered the city...hail & heavy rain.
A bit tired & driving too fast - I hydroplaned & spun off I40 onto the median. Lucky not to have been crushed by the two 18 wheelers we had just passed...also missed the light poles & guard rail & other traffic! Whoo-hoo!
Only my ego & a tire were flattened.
We ended up in front of the Rudy's BBQ. I sent the family in to eat while I installed the spare.
One of the managers at Rudy's (Robert) came out to make sure we were alright. The entire staff rallied around & made us feel completely at home - they fed us, plied us with desserts and were instant friends.
So...Eat at Rudy's!
Robert plays DG and moved to Anarillo from Waco. If you see him on the course - please mention our gratitude for their hospitality.
We were also assisted by a young guy who gave me a ride to a gas station around the corner in an attempt to repair the tire. (Jason, I think) He also plays a bit of DG.
I do hope to make it for one of y'all tourneys some day. Something tells me the courses will be quite humbling.

Hey Alex, Thanks! I'm glad your accident didn't have a tragic ending, bad enough with just the tire problem.

This is the kind of tourist report that helps build bridges, instead of the dumb, rude comments that some tourists prefer (some of you know what I mean;)).

We have definately been getting some nasty evening storms lately, making up for the dry winter & spring. I'm glad the folks at Rudy's were helpful, maybe I can hit them up for sponsorship for the Top of Texas Open. I like Rudy's BBQ, it's new here but we've been to one in Albuquerque several times. Did "Jason the Good Samaritan" drive a little red pick-up truck?

We would sure love to see you and your crew here for tournaments or even just for fun. The course in Thompson Park should provide plenty of fun for the golfers in the gang and plenty of other activities in the park for the others. Give us a shout if you're ever this way and I'll try to meet you for a round.

I'll make the trip some day to play up there.

Peace - ah

We saw a Suburban hydroplane once outside of Oklahoma City. Scary! It had been raining lightly for most of our drive (coming home from 2004 Worlds in Iowa) when it started pouring hard. Just as I slowed down, this Suburban passed me on the left. When his back tires got even with my front tires, his front wheels suddenly turned left and he took off across the median. The last I saw he was in the opposite lane facing oncoming traffic! We did not see the end result but it couldn't have been good. Sure made me drive slower the rest of the way home

In Tucson, which had the same wind/fine sand you seem to have, I would spray them with silicone spray and cover the entire bottom and sides of the lock with Duct Tape. I was moving the baskets every month and NEVER had any issues with the locks after using this method (which took me 3 keys and lots of effort before I switched)

Good luck to you!

I sprayed silicone spray in them with the straw nozzle that is on the can right against the opening, let it sit, then sprayed some more into the shackle side hole, and then put the key in the lock, and sprayed with the nozzle right up against BOTH sides of the key(letting the spray get into the tumblers with the key in it), then turned the key gently back and forth while spraying some more until it popped out. You can also place a straight screwdriver in between the shackle to help pop the shackle(while holding the key turned to unlock it) if they are REALLY stuck..

good luck!

Roc there is a product called Houdini and Ace Lock & Key could prob hook you up with that. They are the Locksmiths that re-keyed the locks for you guys. If Rusty can't get it I will bring some up in August. If you spray the locks then take them off and spray again let all the gummy stuff come out you will not have any problems. Some sprays will cause problems in the future and Houdini is the best stuff on the market when it comes to locks. If you guys have any problems with any lock issues that's what I do for a living so call me or PM me and I will get one of the local Locksmiths to help you guys out.

Hi guys. The evil side of DG has shown up. Any help to control would be greatly appreciated....spread the word.

There has been a rash of vandalism on the news recently at McAlilster Park (Legacy Play Village and Baseball Fields). The disc golf course now is part of the vandalism. We lost a basket, hole 14 at the far SW corner of the course, sometime over the weekend. The basket, I believe a Mach V, was removed from the pole base. I had locks located a few inches under the basket portion...thus the pole of the basket will have a hole in it a few inches under the basket portion. Also, I painted one of the 'spikes' on the basket orange (to point to the next tee). I'll put up $100 myself to get the basket back and to handle the theif. Disc golfers unite and control theft at all courses. Contact me with any leads (806-798-8381).

Also, the tee post for hole 12 pro was hit and damaged. I don't think these incedents would be related.

I will be there for sure and I think Ken will be as well. They are driving in Thursday and he will be bringing a couple of guys who have not been to Amarillo before. We really push The Amarillo events because you guys do it right. This will be my 7th tournament including DisCrazy/TOTO and I have had too much fun each time. Can't wait to see you guys again - yall make my work week in Amarillo so much better.

Basket positions - ALL LONG :D

See yall next week

Yeah...Im sooo glad Misti and i have a place to stay in Amarillo so we can make every event they have. Disc Creek is probably my favorite course for a reason!!! This will be my 12th Amarillo tournament...by far the most I've played on a single course.

Plus it's pretty nice that Jess and Janie's house is right around the corner from Hole 1!

We've had a LOT of rain this past week so the course is really greening up and the creek is flowing fast. Dang, if it wasn't for a few poor-sport crybabies, we could ask the Parks Dept. to mow the fairways again like they did a few years ago and give everyone a real treat! Sadly though, those times will probably never happen again. Thanks a LOT looser!

Negative :(

This time of the year it would take a small army of volunteers to make that area playable, and our volunteer base is very small. I wish we could though.....

Just want to say thanks to all the Discers in Amarillo. I really enjoyed the Top of Texas Open and also getting to hang out with you guys Wed and Thur playing the weekly mini events. I wish Amarillo was closer because Thompson Park is one of my favorite courses in Texas. The small changes really made the course that much more of a challange.

Anytime you guys are in Irving - DFW area look me up and we will disc all over DFW. Plenty of courses to choose from. See yall in Lubbock for Big Arms or Nov. during my next sales trip.

TEXAS WOMEN'S CHAMPIONSHIPS

Clubs of Texas!
Its time again for the state to come together and present the Texas Womens Championships. My staff and I want to challenge the clubs of Texas to out do each other in the girly station contest. We will recognizing the winning girly station at the awards and will provide the winning club with merchandise to better grow their area womens group.
Many have participating in past years and can testify to the enjoyment of doing a station.
We also want the area clubs to begin fund raisers during your minis to add to the experience for the ladies. We suggest individuals to host CTPs during minis with the cash buy into the CTP, run a B.Q. lunch, or throw a fund raiser mini. Get creative help us to help the ladies
We will need to know your commitment to ensure a spot for your club.
So contact Ed Coffey or me.

Definately a sad, sad day for disc golf here in the Panhandle. :(

When a tournament volunteer has to pay the bill for a promoter who wants to act high and mighty, things have gone very wrong.

OK Matt Smart, you win this round. I'll take money away from my family to pay for your responsibility. Maybe the pdga can't do anything about your lack honesty, but you're not in the clear yet.

More dissappointing news for those losers who want to spread lies and untrue rumors:

2 ACES in yesterday's round paid $500.00. Tom G. (hole #3) and Mike Wilting (hole #2) each collected $250.00.

It really sucks that these narrow minded poor sports need to try to bring down the club that has been keeping the competitive aspect alive by telling lies to the newer players, and hosting their exclusive "club meetings" (actually just beer, dope, and darts) with the only agenda of slamming and slandering those who want to grow the sport fairly. Are they ever going to grow a pair and try the face-to-face approach? Doubtful, they can't handle the truth. It's just easier to feel better about running down someone who isn't there to provide the real facts.

We are on track for our wettest month EVER! We're already 7 inches over our average for the month, and if we get another 2.5 before August is over, it will go down as the wettest month in Amarillo's history.

Just heard today there will be a ribbon cutting ceremony for the brand new DG course in Dalhart, TX tomorrow (Northwest Panhandle almost in New Mexico). Sat. 11:00am at Rita Blanca lake. I think it will start somewhere near the big dance hall/barn at the XIT Rodeo grounds beside the lake. I've tossed a bunch of discs in this area and there is potential for a really good course with a lot of trees, water, and elevation. Bring sturdy shoes and drinking water.

Put this course on your "To Play" list!

For a group of newer players, these enthusiasts have done a really good job. Once one or two flow issues get worked out, this course has GREAT possibilities. Plenty of room for expansion, and really good support from the property owners and the town. Only 9 baskets at this point, but there is talk of adding more as interest grows.

I'll post contact info as I get permission, or you can contact the Dalhart Chamber of Commerce or I believe the First Baptist Church.

Disc Golf in Canyon, TX? Could be, and possibly a stepping stone to a course in "The Canyon".

I went to Canyon on Friday to visit with some folks about the game, and they are VERY interested. Finding a spot for an intermediate course shouldn't be too difficult, but a BLUE or GOLD course may have to wait for a while.

Which would be more useful in Southeast Park, a DG course or more little league baseball/adult softball fields? Which would be easier to afford? Where would the ball teams play?

I'm sorry to hear about your unwillingness to get involved with them. You all seemed like a tight knit group while we were there. It has been a while though and I know things change. We will be looking for other tournaments in the area though, we do really like Disc Creek and the disc golf vibe you all got going on over there in Amarillo. We'll for sure stop in on our way to Worlds in June/July and more than likely on our way back home. Keep us updated with tourneys in your area. Take care John!....Manny

Two things - Texas HS Championships and Hobbs DG

Texas HS Championships:

Just a quick note in case someone has not heard(amore) about this event in Levelland. Matt is the TD working hard on things. He has stampted discs for the HS students...pretty nice logo. We'd really like to have some Amarillo, Dalhard, Pampa, Borger, Canyon, and area involvement. Who do you know in HS that would go for a DG trip? Give 'em a few dollars and a map to Levelland! Here is the flyer info:

TEXAS HIGH SCHOOL DISC GOLF CHAMPIONSHIPS

Presented by the City of Levelland, the Levelland Lighthouse Disc Golf Club and the Lubbock Windriders Disc Golf Club

Saturday May 15, 2010 – Levelland City Park Disc Golf Course

2 rounds of 21 holes, lunch (provided) break between rounds
8:30 am Check-in, 9:00 am Players meeting, 9:30 am Tee-off

PDGA Rules will apply (PDGA membership is not required)

Current high school (grades 9-12) boy and girl students from Texas are welcome!

Format: Team and Individual Championships

TEAM CHAMPIONSHIP FORMAT: A minimum number of 5 players from a school will be considered a team and eligible to compete in the Team Championship portion of the competition. Players must all be students currently enrolled in high school. Enter up to ten team members from one school (more students may sign up on a waiting list and may play if space allows). Using scores of best individual players, the combined 5 low scores of your team will be compared to the combined 5 low scores of the other teams. The team with the over-all lowest total score will win the Team Championship. Female players will play from the short tees and male players will play from the long tees. The top team will receive a trophy and medals.

INDIVIDUAL CHAMPIONSHIP FORMAT: You do NOT have to have a 5-person team to enter. Your score from both rounds will go toward your Team score and your Individual score. The player with the over-all lowest score for both rounds will win the Individual Championship. Individual players will be competing for medals. Medals will be awarded to the top 5 players.

Cost: $15 per player. Each entrant will receive a players package including a golf disc.
Pre-register by mail or register on-site day of event. Field is limited to 84 players!

For more information, contact Matt Ryan ([email protected])

HOBBS - HARRY MCADAMS PARK - MAY 8TH

Here we go. It's time to have a kick-off mini at Hobbs! Ryan is a local player ready to get things DG related moving along. He just bought many, many discs for sale. He said local play is steadily increasing. So, for the first every Harry McAdams Park Disc Golf Tourney we'll have a day of disc golf on MAY 8th, 2010. ALL TIMES are MOUNTAIN STANDARD. Registration for a doubles round at 9:30, play at 10:00ish. Lunch / Casino break. Then at apx 1:30 register for singles round, play at 2:00ish. For BOTH rounds we'll play the red nine, then the white nine. I'll post fees and other information soon (doubles will be cheap, singles increase for adv, pros a little more). So, c'mon Amarillo and area, let's help Ryan have a good kick-off.

Hey John,

Is that date a definate? Trying to make our plans for the year and don't want to miss it. Just told a guy in South Dakota that we could not do prizes at his on the 21st because of Top of Texas, so thought I better confirm it. Look forward to seeing you then if not before.

Hi Steve!

Yes, that is the date. We're looking forward to seeing you and Kathy soon (possibly {fingers crossed} at the end of May in CO). D or I will pass on more info to you soon.

Even though some of our Super Friendly neighbors want to crowd our normal weekend (TOTO has been on this weekend for many years now), we're going through with the event. Hopefully sometime in the near future this area will have some decent co-ordination. Tournaments one or two weeks apart in the same region doesn't do much for the area as a whole.

Hey Manny,

Shoot me an email and I can give you a list of W. Texas events that I have. I took it upon myself this year to try and coordinate all our regional events (everything from Ice bowls and Ace Races to sanctioned events) with the TD's so everyone could schedule in such a way that each event can get the maximum draw possible. Plus local players can plan their disc golf tourney season a little better. [email protected]

I have heard the Discrazy Shootout is happening. I dont know if its sanctioned, but I'm hearing that its been pushed back into June so they could secure all the land necessary to setup the CHAMP course. Thats all the info I have.

I need to check with Jess to make sure, but I dont think he is doing the Woodman event ever again. The local Woodman chapter wants to take their "spring event" in another direction. But, I haven't talked to him in several months so who knows....

Talked to Jess. The local Woodman chapter did reserve the pavilion this summer for a private party that includes some disc golf, but its just a Woodman thing. They are not holding a tournament. There are no plans to do a Woodman sponsored disc golf tournament in the forseeable future.

One tournament that is happening in the future is the Wild Hair, June 26-27 in Abilene. Any amarillo-ins planning on attending? Its gonna be sweet....C-Tier event ran as a B-Tier (added cash, players packs, everything). Sign up soon if you want in. The Open, Pro Masters, and Adv. men divisions WILL fill...plan appropriatly.

We are in need of players with portable baskets who can bring them for an event in mid-October. Probably need around 7 baskets, even canvas baskets will work. Let me know if you can help by posting here or get with me at the course. Should be lots of fun, more details very soon.

johnrock
Aug 10 2010, 06:22 PM
Looks like the baskets may not be needed. Just players! Probably going to be 4 to a team, need a business sponsor (still not sure if everyone on the team needs to work for the sponsor). We'll have a 9 hole course set up, designed more for lesser-skilled players, maybe even dual tees to challenge the better golfers.

Board meeting today, more news soon.

Don't worry about baskets, there will be 9 new ones in place for the event. All we need now is for players to get in touch with their bosses and see if you can get them to sponsor you and 3 friends to play in this event. There may be a need for used discs that can be donated, either permanently or for the day, for new players to use. There will be some sets of discs for new players, just not sure how they're going to handle that part.

The event will be the Amarillo YMCA Corporate Cup. I believe it will be Saturday, Oct. 15. There will be several events to participate in, with a Disc Golf round being one event. They will have a mini triathalon, homerun derby, washer pitching, and several other events. Your team can compete in several events or just one, to score points for the team total. Most events will be at the South Y, with Disc Golf being at the North Y (and Hines Memorial Park).

johnrock
Sep 11 2010, 12:03 PM
9 holes fit nicely in Hines Memorial Park. Hole #1 is located between the North YMCA and the school. There are several short holes but a few longer holes will be challenging. Some minor elevation changes will be fun, making putting tricky on a couple of baskets.

johnrock
Sep 23 2010, 12:44 PM
Team members for the Y's Corporate Cup need to be part of the sponsor's business. Everyone on the team will play the round, then all team members combine their scores for a team total. I've heard there are already 6 or 7 teams. Maybe Lone Star Interiors can hire 3 new employees before October...:D

I believe the Y is going to let us set up the course the day before the Corporate Cup so players can see and practice the course. We should be able to have it playable by 1500 (3pm) on Friday. Hole #1 starts in the grassy area between the Y and the elementary school. A map of the course will be available.

PLEASE WATCH FOR CHILDREN IN THE PARKING LOT. THE NORTH Y HAS AN AFTER SCHOOL PROGRAM FOR AREA KIDS, SO PLEASE BE CAREFUL!

Played it for the first time yesterday. No baskets but marked trees near the pin positions. 6 Birdies, a couple of Eagle chances. Definately a RED level course. Quite fun, the slopes add some challenge and aesthetic value.

#5 may be the most difficult of the 9. If the wind is blowing hard, #7 & #8 will be tough.

BLUE TEES are finally getting concrete! Supposed to pour today, all forming done yesterday. I drove through at lunch yesterday and saw some of the forms were placed backwards, so I visited with the Park Maintenance Foreman who assured me it was just a language barrier with the forming crews and all the pads would be oriented correctly. I went back right before dark and sure enough they were all correct.

So now I would like to ask anyone who has submitted a review of our course (either here or on dgcoursereview.com) to please revise (update) your review to reflect some of the issues that have been corrected. Alternate tee pads is one that I would like to see included, as well as the condition of #18's basket (it has been re-welded to a nearly new condition). Also, the picnic tables, grills, and trash cans have been removed from #18's fairway, making it much more of an awesome finishing hole.

Sorry, but there's not much I can do to fix the issues with the creek. We'll just have to live with the ebb and flow of high & low levels. There are talks of planting more trees to accompany the one we already have, so good times are near!

Get off the Interstate and enjoy our course. I-40 only shows visitors the flatness of the Plains, you need to venture North to experience the Canadian River Breaks. Leave the Interstate to the tourists.

Got to enjoy the new Blue tee pads over the holidays....what an improvment! Its so nice to have a level tee area for 4 and 11...especially 4. I got off a pretty mean drive from that elevated tee last Wed morning :-) Congrats to whoever was responsible for those. Also noticed some of the baskets looked to be in better shape and the pin positions too. I dont think I have played 9 and 10 long in at least 2 years. Saw all the mulch around the tees Sunday morning too. Disc Creek is looking good...now to just plant about 50 more big mature elms.... **** ice storm :-(

More news!

The YMCA Corporate Cup is on again! August 13, 2011. The plan is to set up again at the North Y (9 holes), and at this point there are 19 teams that will need to go through the course by 10:30. Start time is 8:00, so there will be some juggling going on. May have to bring an extra basket to set up a 10 hole course unless another better option comes up. Sure would be cool to have a permanent course set up at the South Y, wink - wink:rolleyes:. There is plenty of room plus trees, small hills, and a couple of ponds.

Jul 20 2011, 02:27 PM
Just got back from walking through the park next to the North Y (Hines Memorial Park). Rough! Stinking drought. The area near the elementary school (soccer/football field) looks nice, so holes #1 - #4 are in pretty good shape, but other areas have taken a hit. Hole #5 lost some trees, so it will play easier. Rollers will have it easier since the grass is so dry.

19 teams to go through a 9 hole course in 2.5 hours. Can it be done? Maybe add an extra hole around the soccer field (mando through the goal post)...

How many players are going to go inside the Y and jump in the pool after their round? This heat wave has been tough for afternoon rounds.

Rain in the area! We got a nice little shower at the Rock Yard Monday evening, and we're only a mile or so from the Disc Creek course so I'm sure some fell over there as well. Please do your rain dances, meditations, prayers, animal sacrifices, or whatever your religion of choice allows because we need MORE! This extended drought is making our course look about as dry as I've ever seen it, and I've been watching from the very first throws out there. The YMCA Corporate Cup is coming up soon. They sound very excited about the DG portion, as it was a big hit last year. The temp course I laid out for last year's event seemed to provide plenty of challenge for the lesser skilled players, as well as some excitement for the more experienced golfers. Feedback was very positive about the layout, and the YMCA Board members seemed to be more accepting of the game after seeing the positive reaction of last year's players. Let's hope this year's DG round makes an even bigger impression on the Board!

I wonder if Hasting's is putting together a team for the Y's Corporate Cup? I've heard United has a team (or 2). Maybe have to install some Pro TEES. Maybe last year's players will have been practicing. Who else has a team?

johnrock
Aug 09 2011, 02:11 PM
I saw the team rosters for the YMCA event yesterday. Some familiar names from last year. 11 teams so far - 2 better than last year! Things are looking good.
No team from Hasting's. Bummer, they could have been the best equipped!
United has 11 players in the event, one more and they'll have 3 complete teams.
It looks like we'll be fine with our 9 hole layout, we'll just have to run a ghost card or 2. There should be no problem with all players getting through the course by 10am. The next event for teams will be at the South Y starting at 11am, so there should be plenty of time. With an 8am start time, we should miss most of the heat issues.

I'm getting ready to head out to the North Y (Hines Memorial Park) to get everything marked. TEE lines will be painted and basket locations will be marked with a "X" in a circle. I probably will not put out any flags until Friday because this park gets a good bit of juvenile traffic during the summer, causing disappearing flags. There is a map of the course available, just check with the YMCA office. If you let them know you are involved with the Corporate Cup they will probably find one for you. If not, contact me and I'll see what I can do.

I'm going to push for a Friday set up so players can practice or at least walk through the course.

Aug 11 2011, 11:37 AM
More trees missing than I previously thought:(. But for the most part, the grass is getting better. Holes #5 -#9 have seen the worst of this drought, and whatever caused the removal of several trees. These holes are still challenging, but players who return from last year will notice the difference.

Come on RAIN!

I noticed the soccer field is freshly mowed, painted, and has nets installed on the goal posts. Hopefully we'll get finished before any soccer crowds show up, but I'll be prepared to do some adjusting of #3 if necessary.

Aug 14 2011, 04:56 PM
14 teams for the YMCA Corporate Cup! Up 5 from last year. It was interesting getting everyone through the course in time for them to do their other events, and even with a 4 hole playoff, we were finished by 10:30. The Suddenlink team carded a score of 25 for the victory, Ben E. keith finished with a 27, and 3 teams tied at 28. Since there were trophies for 1st/2nd/3rd and points down to 5th place, a playoff was needed for 3 teams. Good to see lots of ladies playing, and everyone seemed to be having a good time while on the course. Successes like this can lead to more courses in the area, and I'm glad to be a big part of it. Big THANKS to the Amarillo YMCA!

Well maybe not totally but this heavy, wet snow will surely help. DEVIL'S SLIDE DISC GOLF COURSE (Palo Duro Canyon State Park)

Recently I had a walk-through with the new Park Superintendent and we plotted all the tee and basket locations with his GPS. He was surprised by the amount of ground we covered, and he seemed very interested in moving this project along so they can add Disc Golf as another attraction to draw visitors to the Park.

At this point, the proposal has to go up the chain of command. It will have to cross several desks, and at any one it could be canceled. The local Park officials believe we have a very good chance for it to go through, so my confidence is high. The course is marked with flags and cairns right now, but no landing areas have been cleared so it would be difficult to enjoy playing it unless you really like searching for your disc in high grass and thick brush.

The course will start and end in the Juniper day use area. Plenty of parking with lots of covered picnic tables for shade. The area has very nice, well maintained restrooms and many water faucets scattered around. The layout is geared for BLUE level players, with room to install shorter tees as the installation progresses. This will be a Moderate to Strenuous hike with some bushwhacking if you get away from the intended areas. Holes #8 & #9 will be near one of the Park's popular natural features, the "Devil's Slide". Holes #16 - #18 will have a scenic view of the river (without having to actually throw near it and risk losing discs).

Future plans for the area are to convert it back into a camping area and install new restroom facilities. Hopefully they will agree to install a second course, maybe one to cater to lower skill levels. This could make this course very attractive to traveling players. Camping in one of Texas' best state parks and walking to the DG course from your tent! However, it will stay a day use area for the next year or so until the camping loop is built. There is camping very close at the Mesquite camping area (water/elect/restrooms) and the Cactus camping area (primitive sites).

As always, be aware of State Park rules: No public consumption or display of alcohol, No open fires, and NO LITTERING!

Looks like that will be a good time. I've been through that area a time or 2 and I know someone who visits to play BG. Nothing but good reviews!

Going out this morning to scout the area for another 18 hole layout. The Park staff is hesitant about using the area next to the existing restrooms due to the flooding issue. During and after rainstorms (yes, they really do occur), the river tends to reach all the way past the road that is next to the restrooms, making it unfriendly to motorists and hikers. I think we can create a nice short course with less severe elevation changes in the area near the new camping loop, but still fairly close to the restrooms.

More news later...

It's going to be a COLD one today! Looks like the snow may wait till later, so let's hit the course.

We've never cancelled one of these events in 17 years because the weather was bad, and this year will not be the first! Bundle up and let's raise food and cash for the High Plains Food Bank.

Well that was certainly "snow bowl" type weather! Just a few flakes were falling as I got to the course to set up the Short Game course, but by the time we got around the layout once, the snow was coming down pretty good. By the second time around we couldn't see the tee lines. 18 degrees and windy with snow on the ground made for a tough day but we got through it with no casualties.

New Top of Texas Short Game champion! John Rock edges past last year's champ by a few shots for a 51 (18 holes).

Pretty slim on food pounds but a very good cash donation once again. Thanks to everyone who helped out to show our community that Disc Golfers do make a difference.

The Amarillo YMCA's corporate cup is coming up soon. As of the last board meeting, the disc golf round will happen again at the North Y (and Hines Memorial Park). DG seems to be gaining ground with the YMCA board of directors. Maybe one day they can host a round at their own private course next to the South Y.

Yes, but we're going to move the date to the end of September this year. Maybe next year we'll get it back in August. I'll post more info soon.

Don't forget, Saturday Handicap Round on Saturdays at 1600 (4pm). Ace Pot is climbing (near $160 now), and the CTP Scratch-off throw has generated some big winners ($2 for a chance at a $5 Lottery scratch-off game). Show up on time and moderate your alchohol intake or you'll have to try again the next week.

Just finished chatting with my contact at the YMCA. They're ready and excited for this year's Corporate Cup event, and Disc Golf is again a part of the fun! Sounds like some new sponsors and some long time sponsors are back. One of the new sponsors already has 7 teams signed up for DG! They may be giving United Grocery Stores a run for the title.

The round of DG will happen at the North Y (next to Hines Memorial Park), and we'll probably set up the course the same as last year. If anyone has course requests let me know as early as possible so we have a better chance of working it in. We should have nicer conditions this year since we have gotten a bit more rain recently, but the loss of some large trees may make the set-up look different. It is sad, but all of this area has lost many older (and some newer) trees due to the drought and disease.

Hey Rock, it looks like we are booked Sept 29-30 and Colorado States is Sept 15-16. If you are looking at 22-23 we should be able to make it. Wanted to let you know well in advance in case you are locked on 29-30 and need to make other plans for am prizes.

YMCA Corporate Cup is looking strong this year. As of last week's board meeting, there were 20 teams registered for Disc Golf and a few businesses yet to turn in their rosters. Looks like we'll get more of a time slot this year so we can get everyone through the course. Yee Haw!

Nice little article in yesterday's paper about the Y's Corporate Cup. Disc Golf is listed as "Frisbee Golf" but that's OK, at least it's getting a mention. DG is lagging behind the other "big" sports such as basketball (the 3v3 basketball portion of the CC has a LOT of teams registered) and softball, and the 3 mile walk/run has many registered participants, but we're gaining ground!

On Aug. 18 there will be a lot going on at the North Y all day so parking may be kind of tricky. There is a parking lot for the school close by and there may even be some shaded spots there (plus it will be a perfect viewing spot for Hole #2).

I'm trying to get the folks at the Y to set up the course for Friday practice. Hopefully it'll happen.

WOW!

32 teams are signed up for the YMCA event! Way more than last year's 14 teams (which was 5 more than the first year). That is excellent news for the growth of the game. Now our problem is how to get everyone through the course. Last year we did 2 teams on a few holes and did 1 time around the course. This year we'll probably do 3 flights with the same team scramble format.

I've had some calls by players wanting to play the course to get familiar with it, so I'm pushing for a Friday afternoon course set-up so players can walk through or play the course. It's pretty straight forward with no OB (players can use the roads as OB to make the course a bit tougher if they choose), and it's fairly easy to find your way around even without a map. I'll have it marked (painted on the ground) by this afternoon if anyone wants to check it out. There may be maps of the course available in the office at the North Y, just check in the office and ask if there are any left from last year's event (the set-up will be very similar, if not identical).

It doesn't look like the trees on #5 on the YMCA course have recovered from our toasty weather. Most of them look dead and the grass in that area is almost non-existant. But the rest of the course looks pretty good. All marked and ready for baskets!

More than 100 Disc Golfers for the YMCA event! Many of them were first-timers, as well as a few seasoned players. 3 flights of disc golf action provided plenty of fun for all involved, plus one player scored a Hole-in-One! Pretty impressive considering it was on Hole #2, an uphill, through the trees, approximately 220 foot shot on an Innova Skillshot basket (canvas).

Big thanks to all of the corporate sponsors, the many volunteers, and especially the YMCA.

The online registration is up and running for Top of Texas Open. You can register online through the pdga until September 14th, after that you need to register in person with John. There is a registration form available at the sign up page ( www.pdgasignup.com/Qstore/Qstore.cgi?CMD=011&PROD=1346498783 then click on tournament flyer) so you can print it out and mail it in or bring it with you to save time. Excellent golf weather makes for good times.

Go LONE STAR INTERIORS! Thanks for the donuts and pizza and drinks.

And don't forget DISC-DIVA. Steve and Kathy are always stepping up to help improve Disc Golf in our area. Big thanks from the TPFDA!

Also, Jerry Kingston already has the scores posted from today (you really didn't have to post mine though). The Abilene club pitched in a disc, scorecard clipboard, and other goodies for the ring-of-fire.

Lone Star Interiors donated over $100 of goodies to give away, too.

And the Pampa club pitched in a disc and bag as well.

THANKS FOR EVERYTHING GUYS!
