To any of my friends out there who prowl this discussion board, I was told today that my disease, Sarcoidosis, is in remission. I have not regained all my strength, but am on the road. It only took 4 months when the average time for getting the disease into remission is one year. Now I can have my knee surgery this winter so that I can be better prepared to qualify for the USDGC and the subsequent humiliation!!! I am grateful for the wonderful doctors and all the support that many of you have been to me. God willing, I will see you on the links next spring or summer.

Man, today I felt great. I hope it is the last of that medicine getting out of my system and my own immune system and body taking over. I had a great day and everybody around me noticed. It is a good sign. Now if my disc golf skills will come back too I would be really stoked!! Next up I am going to schedule my right knee reconstructive surgery, hopefully sometime in December so that I have winter to recover. Peace-out !!!!!

Well, I have only one more week before I undergo a knee surgery. While building "Charlotte's Web at Hornet's Nest" I had to bail off a ladder with my chainsaw and it did my right knee a great dis-service. I am eager to have the cartiledge smoothed and cleaned out and also to have my ACL rebuilt (for the second time). My ortho doc told me no disc golf for 6 months. What that really means is no planting on my right knee for 6 months. Now I have the opportunity to develop a sidearm!!!! By the way, since my new Sarcoidosis doctor took me off medication and pronounced me in remission I have continued to feel better and better and I tell you that I don't think I have ever felt better in my life. I am grateful to God and to all my friends for their support. So, my goal for the next 6 months is to extend the range of my pitiful 200' sidearm to a reasonably accurate 300' sidearm.
Peace-Out

A brief note for some of my friends in cyber space and another place. 10 days after reconstructive surgery to replace my ACL I went crutchless. 13 days post surgery I played a full round of disc golf, (but no backhands per the doctor for 6 months). Today, 15 days post surgery, I managed to get around Kilborne twice and I shot my best yet, a +8. I am blown away by modern medical technology. Merry Christmas to all my buddies in far away places. See you on the course sometime this summer.

Stan, this is Ben Botte, congrats on your knee surgery and you being in remission. I would like to hear more about the ACL replacement. On June 10th I crashed my FZR1000 on a major highway at approx 80MPH. I had a lot of gear on but I broke my right wrist very badly, and a minor break on my right ankle. Not sure about DG at the moment with my right wrist. I had an emergency surgery that Sunday but I have to have another one on July 10th. I am missing one of my bones in my wrist. But the worst right now is I have complete tears of my MCL, ACL and Meniscus. There is nothing left of my left knee. I guess what was your rehab like, was it in patient or out patient? How much pain did you go through? What was it like 2 -3 weeks after surgery. I am in a wheelchair right now and I have nothing but time to think about it. I see the Doctor Wednesday to schedule my knee surgery, I have been waiting because I had extensive road rash on my knee and they cannot cut into my knee until it is healed. I am praying that we can get the surgery done the first week of July. I thank you for any insight you may have for me.

Stan, this is Ben Botte, congrats on your knee surgery and you being in remission. I would like to hear more about the ACL replacement.
Wow that sucks! After reading Stan's posts again, I'm willing to bet that he had an allograft (cadaverous tendon, usually Achilles) given his quick recovery time. I fell skiing in January, had ACL reconstruction February 8, and was on crutches for 6 weeks after. Luckily, mine was an isolated ACL tear, so it was a relatively easy surgery (for the surgeon). I took my dr's advice and used a hamstring autograft (my own hamstring tendon chopped up). A good friend of mine also had ACL reconstruction last fall and did a patellar tendon autograft, so I know a lot about that recovery as well. Recovery was fairly easy, but be mentally prepared for a lot of hard work and frustration. I was told 6 months at least to be back to 95-100%. That of course varies person to person, largely by your determination to get back.
Rather than blabbing on here, PM me if you want any more info or have questions.
P.S., I'm willing to bet there are a lot more others on this board that have had ACLs done...
WVOmorningwood
Jun 26 2007, 09:36 AM
Ben - I had total reconstruction done on my left knee in 1990. They took the middle of my patellal tendon and used it as my ACL and cleaned up some tears to my miniscus. The rehab lasted for about 4-5 months...Over the years I've had three more arthroscopies to go in and clean up scarring inside my knee...the last one was about 8 years ago.
As a side note...I played in an Eastern Open (all around tourney) 4 months after the surgery in 1990 and started a new event...the Throw, HOP, Catch(instead of TRC)...I believe I got 50' in that event!!!
But one good thing cane out of that ordeal...I'm left handed and it was my left knee...that means, my back hand plant foot (leg) couldn't be used effectively...so I had to start throwing a two finger (flick) instead (two finger uses the opposite plant foot) It was at that time I developed the 400' stand and deliver two finger shot.
and BTW- We'll build ramps for you in PAW PAW to make it wheelchair accessible for you.!!!!!
bbotte
Jun 26 2007, 05:47 PM
You all are not giving me good news, I like Stan's post that 10 days he could walk without crutches.
As for the ramps, that's a lot of wood.
I have a feeling that I will not be playing for more than a year though.

Jun 27 2007, 10:00 AM
Ben,
I am very sorry to hear that you were injured but I am very glad to know that you survived.
I broke the top of my tibia (the tibial plane) and tore my ACL skiing in Breckenridge CO the first week of February 1996. The first week of March 1996 I had surgery to repair the ACL using a portion of my patella tendon. I was off the crutches in just under a week (6 days). I played in a RADL monthly exactly 4 weekends after the surgery.
According to my physical therapist the rate at which you recover can be greatly accelerated by your desire. Look at pro football players. They can be back on the field 4 to 5 weeks after surgery. Granted they are going through an accelerated physical therapy program but they can and do return to the field fairly quickly.
My first day of physical therapy was the next morning after the surgery. She asked me what my goals were. It was the first week of March and I told her that I planned on competing in my first World Championships in August (I think it was August though it may have been July) in South Bend. She knew what Disc Golf was because she had played it in college. She proceeded to tell me there was no way I would be ready in time. I told her "You don't understand, I am playing in my first World Championships if I have to play it on crutches".
During my 3rd week of physical therapy I was finally able to pedal the stationary bicycle. A couple of weeks later I felt stable enough to pedal my mountain bike. Through most of April and all of May, June and part of July I rode my bicycle 15 miles per day before work. I would leave the house around 4:30 AM and return between 5:30 and 5:45 AM depending on how frisky I was feeling.
I have not had any problems with my knee at all. I even went back to playing tournament level racquetball for a few years since then.
Please don't misunderstand me, this was not a cake walk. There were days when I wanted to torture and kill my physical therapist for the pain she was putting me through.
There were days when I really wanted to give up. However, for some unknown reason I refused to quit. Every time I wanted to quit I would think of the Styx lyrics from the song Not Dead Yet:
"I'm a mad dog fighting with the wall against my back
You'd better get a bigger gun 'cause I'm not dead yet"

Hey there Ben, wow, what a tough break. It sounds to me like your knee recovery will entail more than mine. About 22 years ago I have an ACL replacement on the same knee, so this time they used my patella tendon. The doc told me that I was too old for a cadaver ligament , that it would cause oto much scar tissue and such. Well, anyway, don't get too excited that I put down my crutches quicky and got on the course within a couple of days after that. It hurt. BUT, I was on the course and not on the couch. Nowadays they push the rehab big time. I went for about $500 or so and then decided to do what I did 22 years ago, I let disc golf rehab my knee. It is slower this time than then, but that is probably to be expected if only because of age. I think if you just stay active after your surgery that you will get back at it quicker than you might think. Even pro athletes who have this surgery take a long time to get back at it and even longer to get to %100. Take care and obey your doctors, as much as you can afford! Disc golf is therpudic. p.s. it did not help my sidearm worth a ding-dong, but it isn't keeping me from working on getting two new courses in the same park here in Charlotte! That is my focus now. Thanks for the note and I will pray for you to attack your recovery and benefit from the experience. See you out there somewhere, your friend, Stan

Thanks Stan, I am just eager to get back to work. I fear my right wrist will have far more impact in my golf game than anything else. My right wrist was dislocated and broken. I have 4 pins and a titanium plate in my wrist right now, the plate will stay permanently. I lost a bone because it was destroyed. This effects the turning of a door handle motion. Also makes you keep the nose down on a Frisbee. I may be a lefty from now on, instead of both hands. Time will tell, frustrating it may be to return to am status if I can't throw with my dominant hand (right). As I have just seen my doctor again he evaluated my knee and I only have to have the ACL replaced. My MCL is healing on it's own. I am walking now with a big brace, I am supposed to have the ACL replaced around Thanksgiving week as of now I start in home rehab and need to get full range of motion and swelling down before surgery. I can bend it 90 degrees but nothing past that yet. Again thanks to everyone who responded, I was looking for what to expect and I feel I have gotten a great deal of info. You all rock.

Highbridge is not in my near future. I plan on trying to gain a spot in the USDGC at the MSDGC. Qualifying for the USDGC is my main goal this year, and so far it looks like a long shot. Have you seen my putt anywhere? I think I left it somewhere, but I can't remember. Anyhow, my post above was sloghtly erroneous. The grandson will be James Carey, not McDaniel. The mom doesn't want our name. No big deal but is there really room enough in this world for another Jim Carey?
