Ok, so here's the deal...

I'm playing a round at my local disc golf course, alone, and there are several groups ahead of me. As I play, said groups notice that I am behind them, and each of them asks me if I want to play through. I politely say that i would, and I (literally) run to my next shot to get out of their way so as not to impede their play (and the sun was going down).

When I get to the 13th hole, there is a group of two, and each are throwing multiple discs. On the tee of the 14th hole, they see me, I say hello, and they continue... I was a little peeved, but figured they'd let me through on the next hole... Nope. Next one... Denied. On the last hole, I called them on it, saying they knew I was there and didn't offer to let me pass, and they got furious with me, calling me names and gesturing. Even the people behind me were saying I was the jerk for not asking to play through. :(

So.. Am I the jerk for not explicitly saying I wanted to go through... or is it on them, once they know I'm present, to let the smaller group play on (especially when the group ahead is shooting multiple discs). Your input will be used in how I wave (or not wave) smaller groups on in the future. Thank You! -Bg

i'm not sure of the normal etiquette, but it seems like either group could initiate the idea (the one in front or the one behind). Probably there is no requirement that they allow you to play through, but that the courteous thing is to give you that option if your pace is faster than theirs and they aren't already backing up on the group ahead of them.

my two cents

I will always take the initiative to ask a faster player or group if they want to play through unless the course is full.

If I am the lone golfer, I usually ask to join a group if I catch up to one. If I later find that they are not playing at a speed that I enjoy, I'll thank them for their time, run ahead after a drive and play on.

It is a courtesy to be allowed to play through and shouldn't be expected just because you are playing faster. If you come upon a group that is obviously not concerned with speed of play, then by all means ask if you may play through.

Yeah....

In hindsight, I should have spared the bad feelings and kept shut about it... Most of it ws selfish, granted, but part of my motivation was to make them see how their actions affect others. I chose the wrong way to do so, and in the future I'm going to ask to play through. I guess I was just embarassed to have to ask, but maybe I shouldn't have been... It so happened that I was shooting my PR round. :-)

If you DIDNT ask to play through HOW do they know that it is what you wanted to do??

Sure it would have been nice if they offered, BUT if you didnt ask??

If I see someone behind me that is playing faster. I always ask or "Wave" them on.

Once playing with Shawn Sinclair in Santa Cruz (which can have a 9some of casual players on EVERY hole during busy times) we asked a HUGE group of "REC" players if we could play through. The answer was "OK, BUT if you mess up your drives you'll have to wait behind us :( This was on HOLE 1!!! needless to say we BOTH parked the hole, said thanks to the "Very Quiet" group and moved on :D
In this courses case, it gets SOOOOOO much play that it gets CRAZY out there during casual play........

Bottom line is be polite and MOST will let a faster player/group play thru... :D
