The Charleston Classic will be held this Dec. 2-3, 2006. There will be 2 courses in play, Trophy Lakes and Hampton Park. The flyer is circulating and will be posted at SCDGO (http://scdgo.net) soon. The entry fees at $49 for Pros, $29 for all Ams.
Pre registration is available at ZoneDriven (http://zonedriven.com) now.
The Pros will start off Sat at Hampton Park with a 9:30 players meeting. Sunday at 8:45 Trophy Lakes.
The Ams will start off Sat at Trophy Lakes with a 9:30 players meeting. Sunday at 8:45 Hampton Park.
There have been a few small changes to Trophy Lakes. A new map will be available in a couple days that shows all of the changes at the CDGC web site (http://home.bellsouth.net/p/s/community.dll?ep=16&groupid=268680&ck=).
Seperate awards ceremonies is the plan for this year for Pros and Ams.
The host hotel and more information will be on the flyer.
Hope to see everyone there.

No. First you go to ZoneDriven and check out the sexy TTrim on the cover for a minute or two. Then you go to the Pro Shop and get some fresh plastic (you'll need it), but before you check-out you click Tournament Entries and sign up for the Charleston Classic. ZoneDriven has some cool stuff that you can't get just anywhere.

The downtown area is rather expensive to stay. The host hotel is a nice spot with great views and a restaurant and bar on the top floor that is pretty cool.
There are less expensive options in the North Charleston area ($35-45 per night) and just accross the bridge in Mt Pleasant there are some hotels ($50-65 per night). I searched travelocity.com for these rates.

Only 25 are being made in different molds (wraith, sidewinder, teebird, gremlin and orc). The discs are $25 and all of the profit goes into this event. Help us sponsor this event buy purchasing one of these limited edition disc designs. They will be available at both sites, both days. To pre order one, send me a PM or e-mail.

Nov 28 2006, 12:55 PM
If you are approaching the courses from Mt Pleasant, you would come to Hampton Park first.
Directions to Hampton Park:
Stay on Hwy 17 South across the Ravenel Bridge over the Cooper River, past the exit for I-26. Take your first right after the highway comes back down to street level onto Coming. Follow it about 3-4 blocks until it deadends, and take a left. Continue a couple of blocks and turn right on Rutledge. Take that 6-8 blocks, and the park will be on your left - keep your eye out, and turn left just before a ballfield with high walls. That turn takes you to the park; turn right and follow around until you come to some parking on the left - park there for hole 1.
To get to Trophy Lakes from there, take Rutledge back to Hwy 17 and make a right. Cross the Ashley River and bear left toward Folly Beach. Just after you cross over the Intracoastal Waterway (the Wappoo Cut), turn right (there's a Bank of America at that corner, and stay on that road for a few miles. After you cross over the Stono River (another big fixed span), you'll come to a stop light at River Road. Continue on through and the turn to Trophy is on your right after about 1/2 mile. Look for the waterskis with "Disc Golf Course" painted on them.
Hope this helps!

Nov 28 2006, 01:14 PM
Probably Hampton first, it is on the way:
Get onto the Arthur Ravenel Jr Brg ramp - go 2.5 mi
Bear right onto the Morrison Dr ramp to East Bay St - go 0.2 mi
Turn left at Morrison Dr and head toward East Bay/Downtown - go 328 ft
Turn right at Huger St - go 0.5 mi
Turn right at King St - go 0.2 mi
Turn left at Cleveland St - go 0.2 mi
Arrive at Hampton Park(this is just one of many possible routes from Google maps)
To get to Trophy Lakes from Hampton:
Go back to the same entrance and take a right onto Rutledge Ave, right onto US 17 (Crosstown), south past the Host Holiday Inn, left onto SC 171 (Folly Rd.) over the stono river, right onto SC 700 Maybank Hwy. through James Island (5 miles) and onto Johns Island, through 1st light (River Rd), 0.7 mile to a right on Sailfish Dr., 1000 ft. to a left on Marlin to the end. Follow the dirt road around to the clubhouse.
Good map on google.

Schweb and C Lee tied at -14 after Hampton Park. I think they are 6 - 8 strokes ahead of third (Greg Watson from Charlotte). Trey Johnson rounds out the top 4.
Not sure really how close everyone is, but third on down to about 20th is tight.
Hampton played about a half to a full stroke harder than last year as a few holes were changed and made slighty tougher.

Just to start, Congrats to all the winners this year! However, I just wanted to voice a few opinions that I heard over the weekend about the tournament on the Amateur side. I heard a few people talking and I noticed it my self that the tournament was not run as smoothly as it could of been for the ams. First of all some of the meeting times were not on time, however not a big deal.
Next there were not enough ground rules sheets printed for everyone and this was vital because many of the rules were very confusing.
Also if you are the T.D. or helping run the tournament I would think that you would need to know all the rules of the course and how the course rules are supposed to be played. However numerous times the guys running the tournament were not sure what was out of bounds or how the out of bounds was played, This is bad.... I heard many people say they were playing a certain hole one way while others played it another way which can cost some players in the tournament strokes.
Finally this is an Innova Tournament, and all they give out is Trophy Discs!!!!! Come on now, I understand there are CTP's given out to every group but for Innova all of these things come at below cost and its not a big hit for them to actually give out there product in the form of merch bucks or something similar.
In past years the tournament has been great fun to play, even though the biggest disc golf company in the world only gives out trophy discs for prizes. However, the tournament this year seemed below par.
There were gas ctps suppost to be given out from blue water that never were and if your not going to give them out then dont mention it in the players meeting.
These are not just my views, I've heard all of this from other players and I've witnessed all of this myself. Im not bashing the TD or anyone involved in the tournament, these are just issues that need to be fixed.

Dec 03 2006, 09:07 PM
Chris,
As long as this tournament has been in existence, it has been a trophy disc only payout for amateurs. Hence why it is not expensive to play. A two day, four round tournament for under $30. Where else do you get that. Also factor in that the INNOVA gang go out of there way to organize, obtain permission, transport baskets, and set up perhaps the greatest temporary course I have ever played, and I have a hard time justifying your rant over being slighted. Next, perhaps you should just move up and play Pro. No matter where AMs tend to play, and no matter who the TD is, it seems like chaos occurs. In my experience, I have found more truth in blaming the amateur player, for a variety of reasons. Inexperience, and failure to pay attention and ask the much needed questions PRIOR to the start of the round are just a few that jump to mind. Lastly, I would never have expected you of all people to post what could be taken as a slanderous or cheap shot at INNOVA. If you have a better way to run this tournament, perhaps since you live near Charleston, you should take it over. I am sure the INNOVA guys would find it much easier to simply drive down and play from Rock Hill, rather than go through all of the efforts they did to make it happen this year. Just my two cents.

First off I said I wasnt bashing anyone and I understand that Innova and all the guys that work with them do a tremendous amount for the sport. And the payout witht the trophy discs is the least of my worries. What I was referring to is the overall feel of the tournament this year. If you were not at the Am players meeting, not playing with the Ams, or didn't play with some of the guys that were running the am portion of the tournament then you dont know what Im talking about. Ive played this tourney three times before and its always had a reputation of being great and a well run tournament. I dont want that to change so Im trying to point out a few things that could be fixed to keep up its reputation.
And if you think Im bashing then your wrong. And Craig, you know me and I wouldnt say anything unless it was important to bring to light.
DNA_2
Dec 03 2006, 09:46 PM
If you think because a player is amateur that it is his fault if he doesnt get the rules right, then that is ridiculous. First hand experience, I was at the players meeting listened to the entire thing, a couple of people where playing with a the guy who did the players meeting and when they got to hole 16 at Trophy Lakes they ask the guy how the OB plays on the hole and the guy says, "Im not sure?" Then I am in another group with a guy that works for Innova and we are playing together, we come to the same hole and he says hes not sure how the OB plays on the hole but come to find out he plays it entirely different from the other Innova guy......
And if you have maps and ground rules for the players so they can know the rules and then run out of them so all the players dont have them what is a person to do?
I have been by no way slighted either, none of the calls affected me.

Jonas and I came up with the new layout (new 8 tee box, taking out old 16, chopping old 12 in half, new 17 etc.) and we were anxious to hear how the new layout would play for pros and ams alike. We had a few early doubters but from what I have been hearing our efforts payed off.
I apologize to any fellow Am player who got screwed on OB/ground rules, that shouldn't ever happen and the Charleston DGC won't let it happen again.

I still think 16 is a little too long. I feel if it was shortened up some (around 350) it would make it a much better hole.
B/c of the low ceeling, the distance, and the nature of the shot (pure hyzer), it is really tough to get to. When a hole is like this, there is not much score seperation on the hole. Making a little shorter would increase the amount of 2's on the hole and make it a better hole overall.
I'm not saying that making a hole easier always makes it better, I'm just saying that in this case it does b/c there is not much score seperation on the hole unless a player messes up the hole.
The way I look at it is like this. If I came to that hole and it was the last hole of the tournament and I was down one stroke, I would be upset. I knew that I probably was not going to 2 the hole and the only way I could make up that stroke is for my competitor to mess the hole up. I would not want to be in that situation knowing there was probably nothing I could do on the hole to control the outcome.
Just my 2 cents. Thanks for all the work. I might even come down for the spring tournament I enjoyed the course so much.

Considering I have only witnessed one 2 on 16 (by some punk named Jonas :p ) and heard of only one other, you are probably right on a change. We had considered making it a par 4 by pushing the tee back close to the tree line or bringing the basket closer to the OB rope. That maybe only one of the changes we make before the summer tourney.

I heard Coral 2'd it both rounds.
You are correct though, pushing the tee back and making it a true park 4 is a good idea too. That would interesting actually - make the player think if he wants to lay up short of the road or try to get over on his drive. I like it!

scores are up. However, it still has everyone playing the same layout for the ratings.
It can be a little tough to change it - I can change it if Jonas or someone wants to PM me the password.

No problem. New ratings look a little low for the rain but all have the correct par and layout per division. THanks Paul Bergey for all your work and the rest of the Innova crew. A lot goes into setting up a temp course like that.

look at winning score for the advanced vs the same score in the pros. -3
Roush averages 977.
David French averages about 960.
All the rounds are filed correctly, as were the divisions. I can't really explain the lack of rating match ups from am to pro. It's like a temperature inversion or something.
Pro ratings were lower at both courses. all rounds.

All I can say is thanks for providing a most enjoyable weekend. This was my first event out of state and first time going to Charleston. I had a blast and the courses were lots of fun and provided a great challenge. I met some really cool people this weekend( David Wheeler, TACO, Conner, Stack,.....) and got to see of ny boys from Down East NC. Thanks to team INNOVA and Jonas and crew for all the hard work. I will definetely make plans to be back next year. Congratulations to all the winners and if you want some MOE come get some MOE @ www.kinstondiscgolf.com (http://www.kinstondiscgolf.com) December 16th and 17th. GI JOE....(static)......out.

i think the hole is fine the way it is. if you want a 2 you have to throw almost straight at the hole and low. if you want to throw the high hyzer, take your 3 and move on. if you throw straight at it, almost all pros should be able to get within 50, then you have to decide whether to run at it with the slope and water behind it or just lay up for the par.
The way I look at it is like this. If I came to that hole and it was the last hole of the tournament and I was down one stroke, I would be upset. nothing you can do? how about trying a shot other than the hyzer to put yourself within 50 and give yourself a chance for the deuce. limiting your shot selection is limiting your abitility to improve your score on this hole.

Good points.
However, I was refering in terms of the overall field, not just pros. I would garuntee the score seperation on this hole is very poor.

Dear Chris
Each competitor is an important customer of the event. And customer input is important to me, so let me try to address the issues in your note.
The Saturday player meeting was delayed to allow some last-minute registrants. With the relatively small field and all the extra work that goes into staging the Charleston event, we wanted to make sure we could accommodate as many folks as possible. Sundays player meeting was delayed in part because one of the targets was stolen overnight.
You comment regarding the ground rules is right on. We should have had more copies of the ground rules. Next year we will plan to have a copy for each competitor. And we will make sure that all the Innovites are well versed in the rules.
The amateur awards were consistent with our longstanding policy. Amateurs pay modest entries, receive nice player packs, and compete for glory and trophies. Pros pay high entry fees, do not receive a player packs and compete for cash.
The gas coupons were awarded. The winners in the Ring of Fire contests were the beneficiaries of some of Blue Waters fine sponsorship.
I hope you arm has recovered since I saw you last. If you or other folks have suggestions for improvement, feel free to post here or contact me at 800.476-3968 or
[email protected]
Take care,
Harold

I remember playing as an AM (still play like one) and complaining about trophy discs. But at Earlwood Classic 2006, I got my first win in AM and got a mere $60.00 merch bux after having a nice field. Did I complain about the tournament or directors? Absolutely not. I just decided to MOVE UP!...and I did. Next. Since you don't like the way innova paid out, even though since I can remember that's how it's always been, have your wonderful sponser Gateway to sponser a tournament. I'm sure they can afford to have a good payout to have more people show up the next year. Not bashing ya Chris, just voicing my opinion. Though, I have had that problem with TD's and officials not explaining or knowing the rules at Govan in October 2006.

All of you are correct to some point. Hats off to Innova and Jonas and crew for all they do. It is a nice course, and wish I could have found someone to share a room with. It is impossible to run an event of that magnitude flawless, sounds like it came close. We can all help TDs, by thanking them for what they do, pick up a piece of trash along the way, which is what we should be doing, and register and arrive on time and support the TD. What I have noticed at most tnmts, is when a TD calls a players meeting, 80% show up to hear what is being said, and only 50% of those listen. They (TDs) deserve our respect, and we can all assist by allowing them to pass out information, so all players get the same information.
Congrats to the North (is there more than one) Carolina players. Way to bring it.

I am glad I was able to attend. Great experience. One course suggestion at Trophy Lakes I have is for some adjustments to make it more balanced. Most players are able to play it well throwing nothing but some version of a hyzer (except for hole 7 and 14). I personally prefer competing on courses that demands many different shot-shapes out of the tee.(please take this in the most positive, building up, way). Hampton's terrain is amazing, especially the fountain hole, thanks for all the preparation and efforts.

As stated again, I have no problem with the payout at the Charleston Classic. Ive played the tourney many times and I know what is given out. My complaint is not about the payout and if people wouldnt just keep saying that I need to get over the complaints of the payout then there would be no problem. If you dont have anything to do with Innova then don't speak about what you dont know.
Harold has addressed the issue like the true professional he is and thats all I wanted. Thanks Harold.
And I could really care less what any body thinks about my comments, Ive been playing Am for years and will continue to play Am and yes ive had a few wins this year, and have a sponsor but until my game gets to where I want it, I will play Am.
And Mike Gateway has sponsored a tourney down here in the South, It was called the Orangeburgs Outrageous held in September and with a 25 dollar entry fee every person there left with at least 4 discs.
Harold Im pretty much fully recovered except for some residual pain after rounds, other than that I am fine....Thanks for asking and keep up the good work.

Big ups to the whole Charleston crew for throwing this shindig. I had a good time and will be back next year. This was my first tourney in '04, and it has been better each year. Also, thank you Jonas for all you did this weekend. I want a rematch next year at the poker table.

everyone should be a TD for a day....but then what would we argue about?? Good for you Chris for voicing your opinion. Based on Harolds reply, next year's tournament will be even better, and I believe that is what your intention was.

Dec 06 2006, 04:42 PM
Thats exactly what my intention was Sauls, I've played the Chareston Classic since 04 and this year it seemed not to be up to the standards it has been in past years and this year was the first time I heard people actually state there opinion during lunch breaks that some things could be done better. And like Robert was saying nothing could or would get done if no one voiced there opinions. Now that Ive voiced my opinion Harold has replied and is going to do everything he can next year to make the event an even bigger success and thats all I wanted. And for anyone that knows me they know that Ive been around tournaments enough to know what goes into running a big event, course preperation, scores, etc, so they know im not just speaking obliviously about what I dont know.
