Will this be one round or two?
brianberman
Oct 18 2006, 04:12 PM
only one round for all divisions on Sunday
Int and Rec Valley long shot gun start
Pro and Adv forest hills with tee times
this format allows us to skip some of the morning dew (all grass course), use all of the day light, and it allows the intermediates to come to forest hills and catch the lead card.

just a reminder to all Adv. and Pro divisions that there is a limit to the number of participants for the Sunday round at Forest Hills.
I am limiting the field for this event at 72
there are 66 spots left
I am doing this because we have to build the course and remove it again the same day and the sun sets at 5:06 PM.
Top Card Tee Time will be at 12:30PM
First Tee time will be at 9:40 AM
This allows myself and the tournament staff to build the course before the first tee time.
Thanks again

It sounds like I will be available this friday, BerDman. The HR department at UNC is painfully/pleasurably slow.
I, for one, am glad that Cornwallis is not being played. I know it doesn't affect me, regardless, but I think it is not a fair course and the Forest Hills course will give a better idea about what intermediates are really the better golfers. It involves some major course maintenence, which is almost as difficult to learn as throwing the **** things.
Give me a call or something... or i'll just see you there, if i can find the place again. I guess this means I should practice this week.

Rock, are you going to be coming in from Sanford? There's a highway that I think makes a little bit of a shortcut between the two, but I forget what it is (431 maybe? I never used it that I can recall), but if you're going through Raleigh, I'd normally take the Hillsborough Road exit (15A) from 147, turn left at the top of the ramp, turn right on Cole Mill (where the signs are that say I-85 is that-a-way). If I'm coming from the east that's the way I go in...sometimes I forget about the Cole Mill exit and take Hillsborough Road even coming from Burlington.

Nov 15 2006, 01:04 AM
Rocky, here's a map showing how to get from 147 to Cole Mill Rd. You just take 147 North (Durham Freeway), exit at US 15-501 North, stay in the right lane on the exit ramp and get off at Hillsborough Rd. Take a Left onto Hillsborough Rd at the stoplight at the end of the exit ramp, and Cole Mill Rd will be down on your right.
If you're coming from I-85 North or South, you can just exit onto Cole Mill Rd directly. The tricky part is just getting there from the Durham Freeway.
http://img150.imageshack.us/img150/7896/vsmapflathl5.th.png (http://img150.imageshack.us/my.php?image=vsmapflathl5.png)
click for HUGE map, i got bored and drew this up because that exit from 147 to 15-501 to Hillsborough Rd always trips me up too. The path is marked in green, it should be pretty clear.
twig
Nov 15 2006, 01:33 AM
Two ways to get here, Rock. As Bob mentioned, if you come to Raleigh via US 1, then take I-40 to the Durham Freeway (exit 279), then Freeway to exit 16A (15-501 exit). Don't get off left onto 15-501, stay on the exit ramp and take a left at the top, go across the bridge, second light take a right onto Cole Mill Rd (if you pass the Cook Out you've gone too far), then of course the right onto Rose of Sharon and left onto Valley Springs and left into park.
The other way is the route I used to get down there for monthlies. Just take 15-501 up through Pittsboro and Chapel Hill (probably need to get on 421 and US 1 for a bit to get to 15-501). Once you get past Chapel Hill and toward Durham, keep an eye out. About 3 miles or so after you cross over I-40 (still on 15-501), you'll come to a stoplight with an On The Border, Chili's, and Bojangles off to your right. The road splits twice shortly after this light, you'll want to bear right (left is business 15-501, right is bypass) the first time and left (15-501 is left, MLK Jr. Pkwy is right) the second time. Then take exit 108D and you're taking a left at the top of the ramp and going across the bridge as before.
Speaking as someone who lives in Durham, I'd suggest the first route. The latter is quicker, especially since they finally widened 15-501, but the former is much simpler. Here's to not getting lost this year. :D
See ya Saturday Rock!

From what I can gather, take the Durham Freeway(147) exit 12B...straight onto Willard. Left onto Roxboro (heading south), Right onto West Lakewood Ave, which turns into University Dr, Look for parking on left, by municipal building.( where there is park on both sides of the street) I assume this is where headquarters will be...just a guess though.

Out at Forest, hole 1 is excellent for pro's, maybe too much for am's to get over. Hole 2 is an in between hole with a 100 ft upshot and a tap in 4 for most. 4 is a bonus birdy. 5 will add 30 min. of wait to everyones rnd because of the unseen pin on a long hole. 6 is great, as well as 7. 8 should either be shortened to duece or lengthened. It seemed to be a -100 ft upshot for most but not quite a putt.(like hole 2). 9-11 weren't in, 12 is a great hole deceivingly long. 13 is Marvelous. Hole 14 seemed like an easy 3 for everyone there should be a bounty on a duece. 15 is a great hole. 16 is another great hole. 17 is another -100ft upshot for most but not quite a putt. Finally 18 is a great hole by rewarding 2 great throws and a putt for the 3. Thats the way I saw it, some beautiful terrain even if most of it was soggy.
My question is..... where are the Chapel Hill players? Andrew? Neville? etc :^)

Well said. I agree w/ everything. A little tweaking and this course will be an A+. It reminded me a lot of Charleston, but longer. I especially agree w/ the remarks on hole 8 and 14. They are both in-betweeners, par 3-4. My best drives on 8 gave me about a 50ftr. however if the grass was cut and not soggy I believe a few could reach it w/ a good roller. Moving the teepad 50 ft closer or back another 100 ft would make it a better hole, IMO. 14 is pretty boring. W/o the mando it might be reachable, however I understand the necessity due to the next hole's tee. Maybe moving the pin a little closer would make for a better hole. Besides these 2 holes, I thought the course was awesome. Its nice to see another open course in the area. Thanks to all that helped out designing and setting up. Can't wait to play it on Sunday. See yall tomorrow.
eddie_ogburn
Nov 17 2006, 09:00 PM
There are a few too many "tweener" holes (easy 3s, nobody will 2 or easy 4s nobody will 3.) There are a few good holes that set up for rollers and the ground is either sopping wet or the grass is not cut. Other than that, its a good course.

Any other Durham natives who know better, please help, but my suggestion would be to take the Cornwallis Road exit and head right (like you're going to that course), but stay on it, don't turn in to the road for the park...and keep going until you hit University Drive, take a left onto University, and then just keep going until you see a sign for Forest Hills Park, it should be on the right next to a stoplight. Not sure about the best place to park though.

C Lee holds onto the win over BS. Beav in masters, Mandi in pro women. Chris Warf wins adv, Hazard wins am.
Forrest Hills, with some tweaks (see below) has the potentional to be one of the best courses in NC. It is still an awesome, fun, and most importantly in terms of course design, VERY FAIR course - thanks to Brian for getting that course for us to enjoy.
My opinions.
1. Great hole - just may add a stroke to some ams and intermediates who could not make it over the OB (and well, me included, I didn't get over it :D))
2 - Move the tee pad up and make it a true par 4 instead of the 4.5 it plays as now.
3 - fine
4 - fine
5 - shorten the pin to inbetween the big two trees. Makes it a tough par 4, plus the slope there with OB past it could lead for some really tricky putts. It's too easy of a 4 now - I threw2 bad shots and still had an easy avair for an easy 4
6 - my favorite hole on the course
7 - good hole
8 - shorten the tee - big time tweener hole
9 - great hole
10 - great hole
11 - awesome hole
12 - good hole
13 - good hole
14 - although I saw this hole pinned, I feel it should be shortened and made into a 380ish hyzer
15 - I really did not like this hole to be honest. Maybe move the basket 100 feet closer and to the right and make it a 260 slow turning anny that goes inside the big tree. You could keep the left ob and make some long and right as well to add a challenge to it.
16 - fine
17 - tweener hole - make it 375ish
18 - good finishing hole - very 3able and lots of potetentional for a problem
Overall, I felt the course was awesome and just need some play on it. Brian, look at some of the holes and the lack of score seperation and make changes based on that. Just my opinion.

With all of the room you have, you could remove hole 3 and add one somewhere else. Plus a couple holes are too close together (14/15) comes to mind. We(my group) were discussing possible holes that could be added to the course with some interesting shots. You could probably get a nice 24+ hole course out without losing its flavor.
A lot of the people that were watching and walking around the course from the neighborhood were really excited about this course. I heard a woman talking to another woman about how she never thought anyone would think of a sport where you throw frisbees at a target...
good job berman thanks for running it.
There is plenty of room out there to put multiple tees(example...hole 1 use the drop zone as a short tee) or multiple pin placements

Bryan, great photos, we have found our new and improved disc golf photographer for NC. Send a couple to PDGA, they might make the mag.
Good Job

The intensity of that facial expression in contrast to that of the guy in the background is just great...

What is that guy doing?, I think he is a traffic cop by trade, or lifting his leg to pee, or is it a balerina special.
Something else great about this tnmt, was the tee times. It gave us all a chance to play, feel special, and go watch the pros after we were done. Makes me wonder, why don't we insert the lead card 1 1/2 into the round, and when we all finish, while the TDs are calculating everything, we could watch the pros last 9 holes.

they did that at the Skylands Classic at Warwick... delayed the final 2 pro groups start it was a good idea for all the time spent waiting around on calculations

I also love the tee times, but it would be hard to pull off on a regular basis unless you were planning on doing only 1 round per day or setting it up like a world's format(play 2 rounds with tee times and then do a shuffle for the second day)
I think this was probably the first PDGA tourny in NC that had tee times

I agree the behaviour was out standing and I take it as a sign of respect, thank you to all. Your outstanding presence toward the home owners has had a huge impact. I feel with the support that was generated because of this event the course has a real chance of being permanent.
I cannot say how much I appreciate everyone of you.

Excellent job Brian!! Appreciate all you have done are doing and will do. The tee times were the BOMB!! Forest Hills was a mutha, and I want to play this course again. So good luck with that, and look forward to seeing you guys soon. P.S. Yo Matt thanks for the invite to stay, will holla at you soon. Peace. Rruff!!

It could be done easily Jack, jusy give the 2 lead cards an extra hour and half for lunch, insert them into the flow on hole 1 when that time arrives. Some groups will have a half hour wait at hole 1, but on the positive side, we can watch the lead cards battle it out. Which means we get to watch, learn, and be entertained while scores are being totalled. Say the group that started on hole 9 was delayed when they hit hole 1, they would be able to finish, and watch the battle from hole 8 and on.
Brilliant!

Berd- Next year I'm turning my phone off for two weeks before this tournament. I'm blaming my poor disc selection and poorer shot execution on carrying too many flypads and throwing out my shoulder while waving the red flag as a hole #1 spotter. The "tweener" holes are only tweeners if you have a weak arm. I have a weak arm, but I'd like to reward guys like Jordan Bowles, who throws his roc 450 (and then putts with it). I don't want to reward MTL (PS, what do you call it when you shoot a 4 on a par 4.5?) Maybe if I keep lifting flypads I'll throw that far one day. When's the next tourney with a temp course?

Jordan is a freak, but I'm a pretty big arm myself. I was in the world amatuer distance finals, have won a state distance title in am and in pro, and the last three years have finished 2nd 1st and 3rd (in that order) in the state distance competition.
I call a 4 on a par 4.5 a birdie. If you are going to call easy short holes, like Valley Springs number 1 or Forrest Hills number 3 a par 3, then you should call a hole that leaves you a 100 - 150 upshot after 2 shots a par 5. Just my opinion.
Thanks for all the work you did for this course. It is people like you that go totally unnoticied to those outside the tournament, yet the tournament could not happen without you.

Alex,
Maybe you should blame the person you played with Friday, I hear he can be a bad example of how to play course.
I do thank you though for showing me the layout on Friday, it helped me big time.
Jordan is SICK!! He is a natrual talent and one very nice guy. I have enjoyed getting to play with him. It must be the mini he uses.
And yes, I wish I could throw far too but I guess some of us just cant hit 500+. lol

Great job BERDmon and CREW!
Forest Hills was the #m*t$l.
And #14 is fine. If I can get within 30-40' most open players should be able to reach it.

For the most part, I'd be happy with it as is myself. I somehow doubt the basket on top of the concrete cylinder can be put in permanently though.
Then again, you never know...
I loved the course (and now know how to find it), loved the tournament, am still in shock over my round from the Valley longs. It was really something to see Allen play FH, and I really admire both his game and his sportsmanship. Things could just as easily have gone his way...in fact, as some folks are already aware, he weighed in on my side in the group call that decided whether we would go to a playoff or he would win outright.
Speaking of which, Berdman, let me know if I can help by donating more string next time. ;) Assuming, of course, that the permanent course goes in so we can have more tournaments there!
I just hope kids who are shorter than the tall grass and stuff are accompanied on the course by tall people.
