Steve Ganz has so nicely put the Central Valley Series schedule up at the NorCal site. Awesome, dude!!

www.norcalseries.com (http://www.norcalseries.com)

Just a quick reminder that the Delta Windjammers have moved their weekly to Saturdays @ 10ish. The ace pot is over 500 if you are interested. Sat. rOctober 21st.

This Sat. at New Hogan is random draw doubles with a double ace pot Modesto and Stockton together. That should be over $700. After Sat. it will be handicap singles in Stockton @10:00 and handicap singles in Modesto @ 2:00. How is that for a full day of golf Matt!

ellswrth
Oct 24 2006, 01:28 PM
That sounds pretty great Rich -- how many weeks to establish a handicap? $5 or so entry?

pterodactyl
Oct 24 2006, 07:16 PM
One round and you are established in Stockton. However, half of the $ goes to the handicap and the other half goes to gross. You can still win some money with a good scratch score...or an ACE!
By the way, 4 spanking, brand new pin positions will be played this Saturday at "The Fid"(Fiddleneck @ New Hogan Dam).

I played the visalia course in the design phases and I'm really stoked to hear that kind of praise. Mike Mattos and Chuck Woody Have done a great job there. Visalia is putting in another 18(even longer) in that same park! Hope to see you there. If you are going to drive 3.5 hrs, I would suggest coming to Ventura. Sidenote-There are some people talkin' smack on the SOUTHWEST TEAM CHALLENGE thread. They seem to be offended that CENTRAL CAL may be getting a team in next year. (I guess nobody in central cal is good enough for that tournament...?) /msgboard/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

I wouldn't assume you can sign up the day-of for any CVS tournament. Your best bet is to give the TD a call and find out. Modesto was booked in advance -- though a couple people got in the morning-of because of a few no-shows.

Payout was a little weird.

$200 for first- that's OK
$115 for second - a little unusual
$95 for third - almost unheard of when second is $115
$45 for forth - about right but not when third is $95

Well, since there aren't any guidelines for unsanctioned tourneys, anything goes. Just accept it.

One time I payed 60 bucks to enter the Gold Pan (run by Charlie Callahan), won it, and received 50 bucks! I thought he was joking at first. And to top it off, I got one of those 'big' fake checks to remember it by.

Jan 08 2007, 12:33 PM
Hi Rich,

It was an interesting pay out. With 11 masters, you had 4 places paid, which is what I would expect given the 40% "rule" for cash. However, in open 40% of 16 is 6 players, yet they only paid 5 places.

But Kenny is right--with an unsanctioned event, it's up to the TD. It would, however, be nice if there was a web-based, easy-to-use (and find) calculator that took the number of players, amount of $ available, then created a pay out scheme based on a standard formula or set of ratios. That way there would be some level of consistency between tournaments and TDs.

See you in Fresno!
Steve

Kenny, what happened to you at the Gold Pan is insulting. I'd probably feel like I got punched in the gut after that. I'm just a little disappointed. It takes so much effort to do well playing a tournament, so many things have to go right. It's just deflating when one of the main things a TD has to get right is a little off.

The funny thing was that it was actually a tie for third and Dave Avery and I agreed to split the cash and playoff for the trophy or whatever. But then we discovered there wasn't a trophy. I decided not to be a whiner and just let him keep his $95 and I'd be fine with getting my entry fee back.

I had a good time -- but yeah, I was in the group of 12-15 or so who didn't realize that we had to fill out our own cards. So it looked for a couple minutes like we weren't going to be able to play at all! Fortunately there were a couple open holes and we were sent out in mixed groups.

If I'd had my choice, I definitely would have played with you guys though.

Jan 08 2007, 06:38 PM
Hey Matt,

I thought that except for first place (where a true winner is decided by a playoff of some kind), all other ties require splitting the funds equally. In the case of a trophy on the line (2nd place on down), a playoff also occurs, but the cash is equally doled out. But since CVS is non-sanctioned, anything goes, right?

Chris Lane and I were 4th/5th tie, and I said we had to split the money since there was no trophy and therefore a playoff was unnecessary. Turns out he gave me $2.50 too much (I owe you Chris!! :o)

Personally, I prefer the splitting of pots rather than playoffs. As an AM, I was in too many playoffs that went on and on. Nowadays, if I am fortunate enough to cash, I want my envelope ASAP and want to hit the road for the long drive home....

Unless Rich says otherwise, I'll post the scores later this week.
Cheers,
Steve

Hi Mike,

I'm not as familiar with the history of the CVS as either you or Kenny, but in this day and age, I advocate using as many venues for tournament promotion as possible. Since the PDGA forum allows non-sanctioned tournament postings, I say use it. Reaching as wide an audience as possible should be the goal. :)

And I agree with you--I love the CVS! Very low key, only one day events, and cheap! ;) I've only been playing CVS events the last 3 yr, but I have noticed the rapid growth. I think this is the result of people liking the format, and more people hearing about it. I know more Santa Cruz and Monterey players are signing up than in the recent past. Which is cool!

Just so you know Mike, this thread was started in Misc. and a PDGA moderator moved it into tournaments. And we do more recruitment for the PDGA than the PDGA does around here. The are no PDGA events in Modesto (we're trying to change that), Fresno, Bakersfield, Visalia, Hanford or Taft. So without the CVS, getting players excited about playing tournaments, there'd be very little reason for anyone in those cities (total Pop. over 1 million), to join the PDGA.

Moved by a Moderator?? Figures.... :p

Im not saying that the CVS is BAD (at least not anymore /msgboard/images/graemlins/smirk.gif) BUT just so you know........

The CVS started in '93.
I played the event in Bakersfield that year. It floundered until a "few" AMS that had been hit with the "Bump Rule" got PO'd and started running CVS events on the same weekends as NorCal events..."so you guys cant come and take our money" was the quote. Then as it grew it just became a way for AMS to play for CASH and the ability to DO WHATEVER during an event without the threat of being "BUMPED" by NorCal.

Things have smoothed out in the past 5+ years and as coordinator I worked very closely with the CVS organizers to keep conflicts to a minimum.
IF the CVS were PDGA sanctioned THEN they would be promoting the PDGA, BUT by continuing to pay CASH to Ams as if they were PROS, just sets the OVERALL success of the sport and the PDGA in the Central Valley BACK a few steps.

:(

Hey Mike,

I don't think they are paying cash to ams anymore. I "cashed" in several CVS tournaments last year as an AM1 (Stockton, Fresno, Visalia, Modesto, Skullmaster & the finals) and got paid in merch.

I'm playing in the pro divisions this year and what I like about that is that I'm still a PDGA AM (Milwaukee Worlds!) even if I cash in Pro-Masters at CVS.

The thing I've noticed that is significantly different about CVS than PDGA tournaments is a tolerance for substance use during the rounds. And that every 3rd person has a pull-cart.

Very cool! I saw the guy with the camera while we were putting, but I didn't think it'd make it into the final product. Wish he'd used the stuff when I was nailing the putts, rather than the fade out shot of me and my lard-***** in orange shorts headed away from the basket...

I think Revering said it really well (paraphrased): "We get to catch up with [hundreds] of friends every couple of weekends."

Thanks for putting the link on the thread, Kenny.
Cheers,

Hey Kenny,

Will you be playing Hanford CVS next week (February 3, Hanford Open, 2 rounds of 18)? If so, I'll give you $ and reg info then for Stockton CVS. If not, let me know so I can mail it in to you next week.
Thanks,

Most were too far away for me from Sonoma Co.

Back on topic......... :p

My point WAS...

Why is an organization that was started as ANTI PDGA/NorCal AND is still non-sanctioned....

.....Using PDGA/NorCal resources for its own promotion... :p

My point WAS...

Why is an organization that was started as ANTI PDGA/NorCal AND is still non-sanctioned....

.....Using PDGA/NorCal resources for its own promotion... :p

I think the simple answers are:

1) it's not really an anti-pdga/norcal series anymore -- just not a pdga series.

2) however, many of the players in the series are PDGA players.

3) and I know from meeting a lot of new players it's an introduction to tournament play--and many will then register with the PDGA and start playing at the next tier - local PDGA events, or even Norcal events.

4) I don't see a problem with having a thread about the series on a PDGA message board -- since it's PDGA members who are talking about it. And regarding NorCal resources--I guess you mean listing the tournaments in the schedule? That's just a courtesy. There are lots of non-NorCal events in the NorCal schedule -- Steve and I spend maybe an hour per year putting those in.

Mike, I think KL's point is that you haven't really said anything constructive regarding CVS yet--and isn't that what this thread is for?

lonhart
Jan 29 2007, 07:18 PM
Hi Mike (and Kenny),

While the question of "why" is interesting, I think it has no bearing on anything except lively message board discussion. The fact is, PDGA members who also play in the CVS are not prohibited from using the forum (as far as I know) to talk about the CVS. If they were prohibited, presumably someone would take the appropriate steps. Until such actions are taken, AND applied to all other entities doing the same type of thing all across the US and EU (et al.), I suggest the "why" of it is moot.

On the other hand, I'd argue that any promotion of disc golf, especially competitive play (i.e. tournaments) supported by a staunch minority (if not a majority) of PDGA dues-paying members is a good thing. Whether or not the CVS was established as an anti-PDGA alternative is irrelevant at this stage of CVS evolution. The CVS has (in my opinion) moved past that. ;)

It's cool to have an alternative, often complementary, system in place for folks to play in, especially during winter.

Thanks for keeping the discussion alive, Mike!
Cheers,
Steve :D

Steve and Matt,
You boys did a great job answering the "why" Qs!

If anyone noticed on the multimedia article, Will placed a link to the PDGA on there.
Now I didn't start the CVS nor was I around when it started. I just play in it for practice. And it is a developmental series; kind of like a minor league for the PDGA.

Teemac
Jan 30 2007, 06:06 PM
Good props for the CVS! I started playing in '01 and would probally not have moved on to PDGA tournaments if I hadn't cut my teeth in the CVS. As for extra curricular activities, the players in CVS have the same discretion as PDGA players. No"Bog" for me but I'll see you all in "little africa."

Many thanks to Kevin Randall and his volunteers for running a fun and speedy tournament. We were done with the first round by 11 AM and on the road by 4 PM! :D

Next CVS is in Carmichael, and is likely already full. Players from Bakersfield were also promoting their event. They set up a really nice temporary course with good use of the vertical terrain.

Congrats to all the winners at Hanford and to Rob Frias for the only ace of the day!

Open only had five of us, and while I'm happy about being the one with more cash, it would be better to have a little more equity when you're only paying two spots. It came down to the last putt of the day, and I was fortunate enough to make it while Justin barely missed. Had I known about the disparity in pay out, I likely would have been even more nervous! :(

You can do that if you want, however it may prohibit you from qualifying for the finals. I don't know how many tourneys you've played in Pro Masters. I believe that you need 5 in one division to qualify for the finals. You'll have to ask Reese!

Where are the scores for the skullmaster disaster and modesto?

ellswrth
Mar 23 2007, 01:25 PM
A couple weeks ago Skull sent me some final scores for Skullmaster -- but didn't include the rounds so I could post them to discgolftournaments.com -- he said he'd be sending the rest in a couple days.

lonhart
Mar 23 2007, 03:37 PM
Hi Tim,

I sent an email to Reese offering to do the work for him and he never bothered to reply. :( In the day and age of TDs being overwhelmed with work, when someone steps up and offers a hand, one would think they would accept it graciously...

And Matt--last year I had something similar happen (I was only given totals) so I entered dummy scores, but if you're getting the real scores, that's better.

Cheers,
Steve :D

ellswrth
Mar 23 2007, 04:02 PM
Thanks Steve,

Yeah, I'm not sure it's a good idea to put in dummy scores -- only because it would claim to represent the round totals, but wouldn't be accurate. Hopefully Skull will send stuff soon.

Matt

Do THEY have a clue? No. If you mean Reese? No. There is a flyer on the bulletin board that reads there will be two rounds of twenty-seven holes! That's alot of golf for one day! I believe Reese thinks that's what everybody wants. I wouldn't mind playing just the back eighteen twice, but then I'm not "the Decider." Maybe as the club dictator for the Windjammers you could talk to the Mo-town dicktator and clue him in. Wadya say?

Mike, on the paper I got it says, "Mike Corbett 64-74-134. So when I entered it in the database it corrected the math and put you tied for second. I feel bad for Marc. He probably thought he should have won but got second instead. This is not the first time he blew the math and gave the wrong guy the prizes.

We have:
new innova bag
metal mini
autographed discs from Jim Oates, Josh Anthon, Juliana Korver, and Nate Doss
dyed discs by Rich Koski
mini discatcher(yellow)
some other stuff
grand prize: mach lite

This will be a raffle where you get to choose where you want to put your tickets. Not sure what it's called. All of the tickets will be used for the mach lite so everyone still has a chance at it.

If you want to get on the waiting list, call the number on the flyer and leave your name and number. Show up Saturday and you may get in only if there are cancellations. I will take no more than 100 participants.

Hi Rich,

Are the points for individual CVS events calculated as: 1st=100 pts, 2nd=95 pts and so on down the line, in 5 pt intervals? And what is the minimum score (for places 20 on down)?

Thanks!
Steve

Bummer for me. Lucky for someone on the waiting list. Dave Cooper and I both have to cancel out of Stockton. Sorry guys -- have fun and I'll see you at the Master's Cup.

It's too bad you won't see the nice job I've done with the stats, Matt! Yes Steve it's exactly that. The minimum points given - 5. That is just to show that you were there so it counts toward your 5 tournies needed.

I think -15 was pretty hot.

Hi Matt et al.,

Rich fails to mention that after is -10 the first round (20 holes), which was tied for best with Gregg, he went on to shoot a -15, three better than the next score (as I recall) and ends up with the best overall score, 3 ahead of the Open winner, Julian Valdez.

And he had the only ace of the day!! Congrats to Rich!

Cheers,
Steve

Nice Rich! Which hole did you ace?

Thanks, Matt and Steve. The short position #1. The weirdest thing was that I aced it in practice too. Same disc, same shot. All of the hours spent practicing my backhand are starting to pay off.

All CVS Series Finalists,

If you played at least 5 of the 9 regularly scheduled events, you qualify for the finals, which will be at Modesto April 14th. Check in between 0730 and 0830 hr, player's meeting at 0830 hr. Two rounds of 27 holes are planned.

Cheers,
Steve

This should help. It's a complete list of qualifiers and point totals, with a breakdown of the money collected for the series. This is NOT official so if anyone spots any serious errors let me know so I can fix them.

Sunday's Stockton Record had a sweet photo of Staci Pauly putting. Nice form. And then there was another of Laci with Becky in the background. Check it out if you can.
