The Mighty Yadkin Open
A two day, 72 hole, PDGA C Tier Disc Golf Tournament
at Yadkin County Park, Yadkinville, NC
Saturday-Sunday, 11-12 November 2006
Player meeting Saturday 9:30, Sunday tee 9:00
All PDGA Divisions with three or more players will be available. Entry fees: $40 Pro divisions, $35 Advanced divisions, $30 all other divisions. Non PDGA members add $5. First place trophy awarded for each division.
There will be CTP's on all holes, five of which will be Mark Susi, WVO style, custom maple mini's sporting the "shield Y" YDGC logo inset in glow acrylic. Go to the WVO site if you aren't familiar with Mark's beautiful work. A sponsor has added $100 cash to the Open division. All total over $500 in sponsorship for the event thus far. A dollar ace pool fee is included in entry fee with $70 carry over in ace pool from last years event. If you have other questions please contact the TD, Todd Gillihan, at (336)760-1410 or trgtaxman@aol.com
Right now we are set up to go with either an 18 or 24 hole configuration depending on the size of the field. A few changes to the course over the last year, nothing major but more pin positions and a new soccer field encroaching on the hole #9 and #10 area. If a large field requires temp holes I think you will be pleased with what Mole and Todd have come up with. A fair bit of activity in last few weeks with many teepads being reshaped and in some cases rebuilt.
Accomodations - There is a Days Inn within a mile of the course and camping is available courtesy of a couple of local private course owners.
Really looking forward to doing this again. Y'all come see us!!! Should be a big old time.

Yet another amenity the club has added for the MYO is beer sales within the town limits. ;) We lobbied heavily for the passage of the referendum on beer sales and an ABC store. Well OK, all we did was talk about it a lot on the course and say that'd be nice if it happened and we'd definitely buy some too and most likely in town since we don't like to drive very far.......... Actually I don't think any of us even voted.... But we thought about it. /msgboard/images/graemlins/smirk.gif :D Anyway now we have beer in town. :D

Good morning Dave. How was the golf at Winthrop yesterday? Y'all were coming off #16 as we were walking from #6 pin to #7's tee. Heck of a course isn't it. And you couldn't ask for a better setting or better weather to play it in than we had yesterday.
The pin positions for the tournament will actually be decided by a couple of different factors, not the least of which will be the size of the field. If the field is large enough and we need extra holes to accomodate, then most of the pins will stay in the same positions for all rounds. Without the temp holes the pins will most likely be moved between rounds or at the end of the day on Saturday. Those decisions will primarily be made by James "Mole" Wallace and Todd. That being said the positions that the pins are in right now are probably what you will see in the first round with only a couple of exceptions. If things change I'll try to post.

Thanks Jamie! Unfortunately, I was not there Sunday, but David was lucky enough to have Wyatt Coggins offer to take him. I had to work otherwise, I'd have been there too :-(

Regardless of the pin positions, the course is playing hard right now! My last round there was double digits over...Ouch!
Everyone thank the local boys for the work they have done on the T-pads. I hear they will be back at it this Saturday...Sorry I can't make it to help :(.
Mayor Riverdog! I agree it has a good ring, maybe we should skip Mayor and go straight for Pres....there is an election coming up in a few years. You have 2 votes and a few bucks to start the campaign. :D

BS, bummer to hear about your arm. I'm hoping that regilous stretching practices before throwing keep me in the game for a long time. Then again, there's a lot more to worry about. Maybe Dr. Arnold can help you out with that? :D
Look on the bright side, throwing righty side arm will only make you a better player!
On the dark side, you may someday have to throw in the towel and live the rest of your life volunteerly promoting disc golf events for the PDGA. :D:D

Awwww maaaaannn.... I can't literally feel your pain, but you are getting older, young feller...... ;) :D Just a little humor to knock down the prostaglandin level and raise your endorphins a bit. If you're going to be throwing righty you might want to get down to Y'town and do some right hand tamping on the teepads to build up your strength. Course you've probably already moved to right hand at-home 'tamping'. Yup, I know, comedians are a dime a dozen, but a smartass with over fifty years experience is a work of art. :D Seriously though BS, sorry to hear about the bad wing. Senator Glenn is handling that. At Ramcat it has been Pro and Am, but the crowd will probably be larger with the MYO coming up and the acepool etc. Fees will be nominal with a small percentage going to the club and the rest in payout. No PDGA formula applied for club singles. It's a work in progress with fairness to competitors and common sense drawing the lines. :) :D

Gotta stick up for the honorable Senator on this one. He is the resident "idiot savant" when it comes to numbers and directions. Big old afternoon of First Sunday Singles. Thirty seven folks showed with 19 of those being Pros. The Real BS took low round of the day with a five down throwing primarily righty flicks apparently only stooping to lefty throws five or six times. Maybe the course will play easier with the warmer temps we are supposed to have next weekend. /msgboard/images/graemlins/smirk.gif
63 signed up for the MYO so be sure to let Todd know if you intend to be there. Looks like right now he will be going with Plan C - three rounds of 21 holes each with a final nine hole round played by the top fifty percent of each division. The three temp holes are very cool with the first of those being a "short" downhill 380' parallelling #9's fairway. This is followed by a short uphill tunnel shot and a long flat shot back across to old tonepole #17 position. All in all a fun and challenging layout. Don't miss it.

It's a nice thought Todd-1, but Todd-2's disc is most likely gone to the elephant graveyard. If it was terrestrial it would be found eventually, but his was probably subaquatic (under the bottom detritus) or sub terrestrial (under the stream bank). Creek trolls like camo discs. :p
Enjoyed the round yesterday. Good vibes all around. Except for those throwing camo discs of course. But shoot Todd L., now you can just concentrate on throwing that yellow JLS. You throw it so well you don't need any other discs. :)

"The plan is pretty simple. It is going to get dark on us during round 2. When the sun goes down I will suspend play. Since it's not an emergency, all players will finish the hole that they are playing on. We will collect the scorecards, and pass them back out on Sunday morning. At 9 AM round 2 will continue. There is a chance for thunderstorms on Saturday, so it might get suspended by something other than darkness anyway. CTP's will be for Round 1, then new CTP's for round 3. There will not be CTP's in round 2. We will try to get in as many holes as possible on Saturday. Tee times are 10 AM, Sat, 9 AM Sunday. If you haven't pre-paid, please check in by 9 AM to keep your spot. The players meeting is 9:30......"

I am not sure you can "suspend play" and then allow people to finish holes they were on at the same time.
804.4 Rain or Hazardous Conditions
A. If, in the opinion of the director, excessive rain or hazardous conditions exist that make it impractical or dangerous to continue play, the tournament shall be suspended. The signal to suspend play shall be the same as the signal to start
B. Players shall immediately stop play and mark the lie of each member of the group. A natural object is sufficient to mark the approximate lie from which the player shall resume play. Players shall then return to the first teeing area, clubhouse, or area designated by the director.
C. Players shall resume play from their approximate lies as established when the round was halted. The approximate lie is determined by a majority of the group.
I was thinking about attemding this event but now it looks as though I might be happier to sit out. That sucks too because I have heard really good things about the course.

Scotty, It's a really nice course and environment. Don't let my comments and those of others or format change your mind. This club has put alot of work into this courses and I wish more play would come enjoy it. Eventhough i don't like the idea of stopping in the the middle of my hott second round unless it is weather related. With 21 holes I believe we could get it in and we'd only have 3 unREAL holes. Unless there's more then 105 I don't understand the need to have 24 holes. Temp holes suck in my opinion.

I love Yadkinville, it's a beautifull course and hole 9 is one the best holes you will ever see.
However, past incidents make me stay away from this event. The club really should appoint someone to run thier tournaments within thier club (like Jamie). If that ever happens, I would love to come back to Yadkinville and play one of the most beautifull courses in NC

Brent,
I have wanted to play there for a while just have not had a chance. I understand about temp holes (we used 2 at the DEPC this year). They were there just to get everyone in if needed. We only had 86 players but it also eased up some of the groups from having 5somes. At some point you have to say "no more holes, I am sorry you can't get in this event. You should have preregistered." This is coming from me who has waited to register because of finding lodging for the event (both my hookups are out of town or unavailible). If I had gotten there Friday and been told no because it is full, I would have said "my fault, I should have registered".
I hope to make it to the course on Friday and play a round, but I doubt I will play the event (lodging and round logistics) but who knows I might get lucky and change my mind. I hope the event goes well and everyone has a great time.

Jesus Murphy guys, I was only gone a couple or three hours. I'll address the #9 thing and then maybe wander further afield. I agree #9 is one of the more classic disc holes I have ever run across - distance, elevation, vegetation - it's pretty much got most of what you want. I think it was Mole, myself and Big Air standing where #9's tee is now and I looked down the soon to be fairway and said, "Aw man, look at that line down to that cedar." "You mean way to (heck) and gone down yonder?" "Yup!" So I have a vested interest in the hole and would like to see it in there myself. But the short #9 is a great, subtle short hole. Run it too hard and you're struggling to come back for your par and forget the bird. That one was Mole's, and I didn't like it either when he first proposed it, but after playing it, he's right. It's a good short hole.
Now on to the temps. Parallelling #9's fairway and measuring 380' is the first temp hole, a very similar though shorter shot to standard long #9 with the additional feature of a steep slope 30-40' behind the pin dropping onto the new soccer field. Run this hole too hard on your drive and you're struggling for a bogey. Cool hole for an "Fn temp". Some of the others are just as good, some aren't.
Look, I'm not on here to act as an apologist for Todd or the club. I'm on here because I, like a bunch of other folks in Yadkin and surrounds, have busted my hump for a couple or three years to get to the point where we can invite all our buddies in the disc community to come here and do what we wanted to do in the beginning and to the present day - :D :cool:Have FUN!!!:D That's pretty much it in a nut shell. Soooooooo, come on and play some golf with us, relax, laugh and have a good time.

And a clarification just in from PDGA's David Gentry - if the field is divided in half with 1/2 the course being played by people in the same division on the same day and switch to the second half on the second day, no problem, still counts as one round for scoring. This way everyone in the same division plays the same holes on the same day. See, I told you it was a simple game. :)

Brief summary, without trying to create any mess...
A proposed payout was posted that inlcuded the open players recieving 5 dollars for last cash, 10 for next to last and stuff like that.
After the tournament was through, there was a 3 way tie for last cash. B/c of this, the number of golfers being paid changed.
And that is why I and others are not playing this event. It has nothing to do with the club the course or anyone in Yadkin, just the individual running it.

Nov 08 2006, 04:30 PM
Whatever, I'd play if they paid out in food stamps.
MTL21676
Nov 08 2006, 04:34 PM
It has nothing to do with the money. In fact, I actually had no problem with the amount of money being paid out other than I felt it was a little insulting to those near the bottom of the payout. Despite that, the money added up and the payout was approved by the PDGA. However, this year, that could not be done due to the payouts being mandated now.
It was the principal of the payout changing.
It's all good. Whenever there is a NC tournament and people like myself and Kirk Yoo, both who play close to 30 event a year, are not coming, that tells you something
Good luck to all involved this weekend!

Todd G is a friend, and I am playing this weekend, and I will have fun. In that spirit, if Todd asked me (which he didn't) but if he did ;), I'd say that I prefer to play 2 rounds of 18 holes and that if folks don't preregister, too bad. That's life. We're all old enough to see the fairness in that.
Filling a tournamnet just tells me that disc golf is becoming more popular and can afford higher entry fees to support higher payouts for those who do play and to reward the TD of a well run event. It also adds to the reputation of an event to fill it early.
21 holes seems unconventional to me, but not too big a deal. When one adds so many holes that rounds have to be cut in half due to darkness, well that changes everything - literally.
I'm not so good anyway, and play mostly for the pleasure of it, so it will have minimal impact on me. I can see the point others have made here though.

The temp holes are Y, A, and D in the amphitheather bowl, and K, I, and N on the back side of the course. If you start the second round on say #3, when you get to #9, or #D you go back to #1 just like you would with an eighteen hole course except we are playing twelve hole halves for the twenty four hole course. Yup, we will be tracking daylight but just roll with it and everything will be fine. The discs are gorgeous, we have CTP's for virtually every hole of the first and third rounds, some of which are really killer CTP prizes with values in the fifty to sixty buck range. Come to the player meeting with an open mind and pay attention and then spend the day having a great big old time outside. :D

Are ju crying??? There's no crying in disc golf!!!!! Unless of course you have to play all four rounds of a tourney with MTL, that's worth a good cry and a look at long-term counseling! :D

Big old wind yesterday. Unbelievable tournie for Beav, only 3 bogeys all weekend in way less than ideal conditions, especially Sunday. Todd said he'd post scores sometime today.
Hope everyone had a good time. The club looks forward to seeing you all again next year... Shoot, maybe even a few more of you.

I'd like to thank my sponsors........... :D
Seriously, Thanks to everyone who contributed to making the YO a success and a goodtime! The Yadkinville Club did a fabulous job getting the course ready, and helping Todd G. tackle some of the responsiblities of TD. Despite some irrational opinion's, TG deserves a special thanks for taking on challenge's that nobody else wished to handle (at least to my knowledge). Considerating all the circumstances, he did a fine job. And, like many of the folks I played with this weekend experienced, a few lessons are going to come out of this, and only make for a better experience/tourney next year! :D:)
The high winds definitely were the story this weekend, and the scores are a reflection of that.
Alan B. blew us all away with his stellar preformance! We avoided the rain, but he brought the lighting!!
Congratulations to all the Winner's, and thanks to all the loser's! :D :D
Let it be noted, that for the first time in as long as I have been a mountaineer (7yrs), the High Country of NC has some competitors to be proud of. All 4 reps. cashed! Could this be a sign of what the new Ashe Park course, in Jefferson, NC. is capable of producing? You better believe it! ;)
Looking forward to next year! :)
Jamie,
Thanks to all for the work that went into the MYO. While our wind burnt cheeks and second round confusion may have masked our appreciation, it was a pleasure to play your course and hang out with members of the most hospitable club around. I even learned how to hyzer a Wildcat and get a 90 degree tunrover (25 mph cross wind required).
I know I'm late reading the pre-tourney fireworks, but I would like to make one comment. One should not jump to the conclusion that the requset on the top post on page 16 to "Find a dictionary and look up hypocrit (sic)" was in any way mean-spirited. It was just a plea for a spell check. If the joke was intentional, then well played, sir, you got me.
Congrats to the winners. Looking forward to the '07 MYO.

Sounds like the Yadkin was a great time wish I could have been there, however , I must support my local club at OT Sloan and our monthly. Did the winds remind any of Jacksonville/Richlands?

The open holes were definately comparable to some of the bad days Ive played in the tournaments at Richlands, it was pretty crazy I had a monster flip way right thrown with slight hyzer.

From now on could you please refer to me as MT.TODD. Unfortunately for MTL, he's undeserving of the title. There's only one Mtn. range in NC., and I'm on it! :p

I've gotta say I enjoyed the tournament this weekend. The wind pretty much kicked my a** but it was a learning experience. The course looked good.
It was by far my worst tourney, but I still enjoyed the course and the people. Ill definitely be back next year.

Course did look good and the pad were Gr8. Hopefully no crossing fairways next year without the Snatcher. must practice 180-230 drive.
