The Arlington Disc Golf Association proudly presents the 2006 Veterans Park Open. This year will be a combined Pro/Am and we will have a limit on the field size per division*. All players will be playing 3 rounds of 24 holes each and then we will cut to a final nine holes. We are still in the process of determining final field sizes and where the cut is going to be so please be patient. Either before or after the final nine we will have Ace Golf in the Oaks for anyone who is interested in some really fun golf.
The field sizes are (until further notice) as follows:
Pro fields
MPO 25 players
MPM 15 players
FPO 10 players
MPG 10 players
Amateur Fields
MA1 30 players
MM1 15 players
MA2 15 players
Any amateur women that wish to play the event will be accommodated and their entry fee will be the same as the male divisions. If any women wish to sign up in the FPM or FPG division we will need a minimum of three to make that division, please check with Terry Toolen or Jason Chamberlain to see if that is a viable option.
Entry fees:
MPO $105
FPO $105
MPM $70
MPG $70
MA1 $60
MM1 $60
MA2 $45
The ace pot and Ace Golf are optional and will cost you $5 each on top of your entry fee. This will be an A-Tier for all Open divisions and a B-Tier for all amateur divisions. Please register early by http://titledisc.com, snail mail is ADGA P.O. box # 120927 Arlington, TX 76012 or with Terry or myself at the Sunday mini or wherever you see us. I really hope to have a great field this year and cant wait to see some of you guys.

We're just padding the pro purse ;).
On a serious note, those are the same entry fees as last year. I know that some of the events lowered their fees this year but we chose ot too, hopefully it will reflect in the payout.
I will still be there ~~~~ It sux that the Advanced won't be playing VPO as an A-tier

MPO 25 players???
Division 2004 2005 2006 (allocated)
MPO 32 38 25 ???
FPO 4 5 10
MPG 3 7 10
MA1 18 13 30 ???
MM1 3 4 10
The division with the best attendance gets less spots. Why not MPO = 30 & MA1 = 25? Alot of Advanced players have stepped up now that worlds is over.
where's the poker game at? i just got back from Vegas and I'm ready to lose some more money?

Wow, guys, that's kind of sad, really. I don't mean that in an insulting way. I know it's hard enough to run one big tournament, let alone two within a couple weekends apart. It's just that VPO use to be THE big tournament in Texas with a lot of touring pros attending. It was the first time I ever saw a staggered start ('96). It was cool watching everyone tee off from the pavilion. I just went to watch and hang out with Mr. Wilchek, Mr. Hudson & Mr. Lamont. I think that was the only year there were two courses. There was a temp course set up in a park down the street. I played '97-'00 and enjoyed a well run tournament every year. Anyway, I'm sorry to see that it's going to a single pro/am weekend with spit A/B. Especially since we already lost Waco. Hats of to you though, guys, for doing what you can to keep it alive.
From what I heard the Advanced division is gonna be limited to 15-20 player's so the MPO division will have more spot's.
Which I think is a horrible decision.

Young un's :D, no reading comprehension, as of this moment it is still undecided. My post was just regarding how we were leaning.
The problem is that VPO was one of the premiere events for the touring pros and the local pros alike, and we would like to keep it that way. This year we were faced with a decision on whether to combine the events or not, financially it just doesn't make sense for the club to basically pay for a high quality event two times within a month. We rent a golf cart, provide water coolers and ice, provide breakfast, lunch 1 day, etc. If you tally those costs up X2 it gets to be a fairly large figure and the club would rather be able to add that to the Pro purse. After all, most of the MA1 field (not to mention most of us playing this game) are all aspiring to be able to compete in the Open field, so why not cater to them, especially when it comes to a large event. I'd like to see VPO get back to the level it was at before I started playing DG, which means working hard on raisng sponsorship money, not treating tha AMS like cash cows, and showcasing the best players the sport has to offer.

And to the PM I just recieved:
Yes I realize that this event is just a few weeks away and NO I can not explain why it is not up on titledisc yet. The info has been sent I'm just waiting for them to list it.
The "indecision" that you speak of is due to more than one person having a say in how this tournament is ran and I promise you will be the 2nd to know ,after I get all of the answers. I am merely the ADGA internet prescence at this point, there is no need in personal attacks.
All I am trying to say is, I would not want to drive 3 or 4 hour's away and pay for gas, food, hotel and $60 to play against 15 people.

Why pay $105 if I am not gonna accept cash?
jasonc
Oct 17 2006, 12:48 AM
Then move up, it's a larger field :D.
I'm just picking on you because you're the most vocal at this point. The sad fact is most AM's have not supported this event (sometimes justified), so why should we as a club go out of our way to support the AM field. I'm fully aware of the fact that we could make a pretty large profit from a big AM field (which is why we had seperate weekends, an easier way to add $$ to the pro purse), but if I (*****this is a personal opinion and should not reflect on the ADGA in any way******BTW I hate Vinnie Miller ;)) have a choice and the tournament can only be held on one weekend, therefore limiting the field sizes, I say cater to the pros and showcase the best of the best.
There are a lot of DG'ers out there that also play "ball" golf. How many of them would pay another $50 to be ableto play with VJ, Tiger or even Justin Leanord? Look at how many people played in the USDGC just for the experience (and I am not, in any way, comparing VPO to the greatest tourney in Disc Golf).

Umm, maybe to play with better players so that you improve. It isn't all about payout.
You could play open and get in at the "trophy only" discount. It would probably help your game too.

What year will players finally see the big picture.
I go to a P.G.A. tourney and the only ams, advance, rec I see are behind the ropes WATCHING. I did go to an A.G.A event and all the pros were behind the ropes.
VPO was decided to be one weekend.....be glad there are a few spots for the ams at all. Don't get me wrong....I agree there should be a venue for the am divisions ( I disagree Recs should be a division, thems guys that play for fun)

This is a good idea. If we're trying to showcase the best players, I can understand catering to the open division, but that division hasn't had a good turnout over the last few years either. Having just the "open" pro and "open" amateur divisions for men and women (and masters, grandmasters, etc. if enough demand) is probably the best way to fill the 120 spots. That's the way many A-Tiers do it in other parts of the country, especially when they only have one course with a few extra baskets added.
If we could ever get Titledisc up and see where the demand is, I bet it'd make the ADGA's decision a little easier!!!

This year's VPO really is a great chance for the Ams to test the waters, learn and improve by taking advantage of the Trophy Only option. If they mix up the field the first round you'll also have the chance to play with some great players. I am pretty sure the US Champion, Barry Shultz, will be there as well as many World Ranked Pro Players. The VPO will be seeing the Top Three ranked Pro Women in World at this event. What an opportunity!
If non VPO playing Amateurs were dedicated to be there from start to finish each day, I would even consider taking a caddy as a walk and talk session on the game :)
It would be great to finally see non VPO playing AMs come out and follow the top cards and players. You would really be suprised how much you could learn from observation over not just playing for once. Remember when you throw a "practice round" you really are pretty limited to throwing 25 or so drives and 25 or so putts. All pros will tell you that really isn't considered "practice".

when I hear the phrase "move up and test the waters" it usually comes from a player at the top of his division (it happens in the am divisions also), who is really thinking "move up sucker and pad my payout"....
I believe that many players each year move up to the pro ranks to early, get their buts kicked, drop out of the tournament scene and resort to playing casual disc golf and minis....
I have NO problem with someone running their tourny the way they want.... if I dont like the way it is done I dont have to participate, or I can even run my own if I choose to....
I DO have a problem with the attitude that this tournament is for the pros.... you ams are afterthoughts, and will be treated as such....
dissagree with me.... I have been wrong before.... I got no problem with that....

I wouldn't recommend it if I hadn't done it myself. Playing Open is about knowing yourself and your game. The only way to see if your ready to play open is to play open. I know that Joseph has the game to play open, that's why I give him a hard time.
I don't care about getting a couple of extra pro players just to pad the payout. I always recommend to players that aren't ready for Open to stay in advanced (example: Jason Akbaran a.k.a. PeeWee).

Then why does he keep signing up in MPO and getting his butt handed to him ;).
I talked to the head Loompa today and it looks like I'll be limiting or doing away with the MA2 field, adding the trophy only MPO division and freeing up some space for the ladies.
BTW, there is a young lady that really wants to play FPO but is leaning more towards advanced due to the field. My opinion (and I already sent the message) is to get a sponsor to make up the difference between the 2 entry fees with a sponsorship, I'm going to try and do it myself if noone else can but let's see what we can do for her. Any takers?

This is definitely not going to win me a popularity contest, but here are the new guidelines. I'll send a copy of this to Ben at titledisc and hopefully he will have us up before the weekend. If not I'm contemplating just using my paypal account for entries.
MPO $105 30 spots reserved
MPO /trophy only $60 **** 10 spots reserved
MPM $70 15 spots reserved
FPO $105 10 spots reserved
FPO /trophy only $60 **** 5 spots reserved
MPG $70 10 spots reserved
MA1 $60 25 spots reserved
MM1 $60 15 spots reserved
As of this moment we will not be offering any divisions below advanced for pre-registration.
That makes for a total of 80 reserved for the Open divisions, hopefully theyll all fill. **** If any of the divisions with a trophy only option fill up before the trophy only spots are taken then the spots left in the trophy division are going to be available for that division, if they are not taken they will be open to any division (cut-off dates on entries will follow)****. Please sign up as soon as possible, it makes it easier on us and the players. I realize that we are behind on getting this out there for the players to sign up and I apologize for that, its been a really weird year for most of the key people in the club. We will do our best to make up for it with a great event.
Title disc entries will be cut off at midnight Wednesday November 1st. Any spots left in the tournament will be open to any division, including MA2, (we will not be offering a MA3 division this year) at 4 pm on Friday November 3rd during doubles. We will not be taking any registrations after 7:30 AM Saturday. If, for some reason you cant sign up on-line or at one of the local minis, please contact me or Toolen to reserve your spot in the VPO. I will not do this for everyone, but if I know you are the type of person that stands true to your word I will make sure you have a spot reserved.

Steve is right on this. I have seen tons of players move up to early, place poorly and simple quit playing. However, the trophy only division gives the player an oppurtunity to test the waters and is not nearly as costly. No serious commitment is made and the player either excels and decides it is the way to go, or can drop back.
when I hear the phrase "move up and test the waters" it usually comes from a player at the top of his division (it happens in the am divisions also), who is really thinking "move up sucker and pad my payout"....
I got no problem with that....
attack me personaly.... kiss my *****.... I got no problem with that either....

That is what is wrong with people these days..... I am not good @ something so I will quit. This modern mentality is what is truly going to bring this world to its demsie!
What ever happened to perserverence? If generations before us had this mentality, we would be picking flea's off of each other and swinging from the vines! People really make me mad!

I was moved up to early and I turned out fine.
I only played 4 Advanced tournaments, unlike some of you guys playing 4 decades of Advanced tournaments. I think we need to start moving these guys up when their player rating goes above 959. If all of you guys moved up it would not be as hard to cash in the open divison, but when there are only 10 open players per tournament it is a little bit harder.

Finally, a voice of reason! I second the motion!
That is somebody with the right mentality!!!!
Did Chris's player rating go through the roof when he move up, no. Did he start cashing right away, no. But after time he has become quite a force to reckon with on the golf course, and his player rating is creeping up there to the elite status. That is how a PROFESSIONAL should approach his game! How many advanced players out there can say that bout themselves. Chris, that mentality is admirable! People could learn a lot from watching the up and coming pro's. I have!

Hey it is a sign of our generation. It is also a case of continued frustration. There are many youth and adults that try and try at something and never play it again if they suffer frustration. Look at the number of kids that simply drop out of organized sports. Disc golf, like any sport, can be tremendously fullfilling one week and the game you hate the next.
If you cannot understand quiting, think of the game becoming more like work than fun. One thing organized sports has taught us is that to play at a higher level you must practice. If you cannot practice due to other concerns such as family, work, other sports, etc. then you cannot compete at the Open level. Certainly there are players that have a natural ability and don't need as much practice, but the top pros will tell you that you must practice to excel. Once you fall behind in your practice and the fun drains from the game players quit playing at the organized level. Whereas if you stay at the amatuer level, that natural ability is often times enough to allow you to play well and have fun.
That is what is wrong with people these days..... I am not good @ something so I will quit. This modern mentality is what is truly going to bring this world to its demsie!

Having said that, why would you compete if you cant not afford the time to practice. DO NOT move up if you can not practice. That would be like me taking my 94 Jaguar to the Top Fuel drag races and being upset that I ran a 16 second quarter mile. Just stupid.
If you like to play for fun, play for fun! Dont slow the pace for the real competitors. The casual mentality I applaud, in lieu of entering into a tournament to be " In with the in crowd " why not spectate. Even better, why not contribute to the smooth running of the event?

and Nolans game shows it (nothing personal, he just plays better when he plays more often)
God knows there are plenty of them. Here is where I feel conflicted. I think that right now, my game progreses weekly. I practice all elements of the game, as much as time allows. I compete in several mini's a week in the open division. I cash weekly. My pre-tournament regiment has given me the capacity to remain competative in MA1 with a very few exceptions. The biggest obstacle I have had to overcome to become successful is totally mental. I have the tendancy to let amature players ( whom act like amatures ) affect my rounds. If I take that element away from my tournament play, the liklihood of me playing above my player rating is very probable. My one issue is that I have not won as an MA1 competitor. In your opinion, should a win in a lesser division be used as an indicator to MOVE UP? Or should the value be placed on consistant performance, in a lesser division?

Chris,
As stupid as it may sound, if you want to truely excel you must practice. Ask Ken, Barry, Des, Juliana, etc. what their practice schedule looks like. There are a lot of players that can do very well without practice, but they will never consistently win, much less be world champions. I have been playing on and off for almost 27 years and I have seen many players move to Open, play for a year or so, never progress beyond the middle third and simply drop off the end of the map. Certainly you have seen the same thing. If a players moves up before they are ready, don't have the time to practice, and preform poorly they just quit or play mini's only.
I also think that you believe everyone starts with the same ability levels and that is simply not true. There are a lot of players that will never progress beyond intermediate.
As for 99% am and 1% open, you might check the PGA ratios. I think disc golf is beating them on Open to Am ratios.
That is just stupid.

**** you Thomas.... I am going to pretend I slipped this post in before your post above..... then I will shut up....
Chris posted that when a players rating hits 959 he should be forced to move up....
these are not the players that I was talking about earlier.... I was talking about players like myself with ratings in the 920's or low 930's....
myself.... I have allways felt that a cap should be put on Advanced, just like the lower ams divisions.... 960 to 970 being a good cutoff rating for Advanced.... allowing players to accept payout in plastic if they dont want to accept cash for college elegibility or whatever....
as for moving up after one win in a division.... HELL NO !!!
if everone vacated a division after one win, we would have players in the pro ranks with ratings still in the 800's....
because I started some of this crap, perhaps I will move up from MM1 to MA1 for this tournament only.... :D
- all misspelled words misspelled on purpose.....

Here's the final 9 holes I proposed to Terry. I don't know if this will be for all divisions but if you're playing MPO you can count on this layout.
Champion 1 Not teeing of from the spot where we have been doing it at A to Z, closer to where the sidewalk ends by Champion 8's pad
Champion 2 Anyone who has been at a VPO knows this hole. You can pick up a stoke on most of the field with a 3 or throw 1 bad shot off the tee and loose a few.
Hole 3 Here's your opportunity to gain a stroke with a 2.
Champion 5 Just like we've played it at A to Z. Another birdie oppurtunity also.
Champion 8 to 10's basket That's right. The old school ADGA folks and people who played some of the early VPOs will remember this as the original hole. Without a doubt a true Par 4 and one of the "coolest" holes on the course.
Hole 11's pad to 12's short bucket This should be a fun hole. Once you clear the tunnel of trees offf of 11's pad it's nothing but air and the ever present wind.
Hole 13's pad to 14's short bucket Should be another fun hole. A chance to throw down a couple of booming rollers or show off that big arm, with a tight finish at the end.
Champion 17 Classic hole at about 700'. I got to see Leyva putting from about 50' out for a 2 and tee shot was all air.
Champion 18 Teeing from behind the sidewalk. Another long hole that requires a good accurate shot.
That's it. I really look forward to seeing what some of teh best players in the world can do on that layout.

I'm thinking you meant par 5. I only know of 3 people to ever get a 3 on the hole....Leyva, Stokely, and Aaron Little!!!! If it were a par 4 as you stated...only 3 birdies in the 16 year exsistance of the hole? No way it's a par 4. Call it a par 5 and it having 3 known eagles.....now we're talking.

Especially because this time of year, the wind is usually horrible on that hole.
You probably won't see any 3's. If so, we'd have to add those names to the list of the 3 golfers that have 3'd it.
Is Nolan one of the magical 3 ?
You would need his arm to make that happen!

Oct 23 2006, 04:10 PM
You'd have to park 8's basket to have a shot at a 3. Given the typical headwind on top of the mountain, that ain't gonna happen.
dannyreeves
Oct 23 2006, 04:11 PM
How far do you need to get on the drive to have a chance? I have never played that hole but I have had a couple easy upshots for 3 to 8's basket. Probably have to get way up the fairway to have a chance to get over the trees on the upshot.
You either need to be in front of or way right of the large group of trees in 8's fairway. You are still going to have to throw a 350 ft uphill hyzer with a viscious headwind to get to 10's basket. I would imagine ,for those whom clear the trees off of champ 8, you can lay up close to 8's long pin and go over the top for a reasonable 4.. Which translates to a birdie if I am not mistaken?

The holes I listed are most likely going to be played for the final 9. But I will always give myself an out and say that things are due to change at any moment :D. I'll try to get in touch with the HLIC and get the entries he has this evening. I have 17 entries from titleDISC (http://titledisc.com) already and should have those entered shortly. Just from the calls I've recieved and the early flood of online entries I'm predicting we will fill, so sign up early.
fyi : the new pin's on 7 and 18 are pretty sweet!

Oct 23 2006, 04:44 PM
where is 18?
colin-evans
Oct 23 2006, 04:47 PM
You would probalbly have to be in front of the trees on your drive for a chance at a big hyzer over the trees... easy three :D
ce
18- Close your eyes and imagine the short pin ( up the hill ) and the long pin ( by the sidewalk ) Draw a straight line between the two. Meet in the middle ( yes in the woods ) and its about there. I will say this. The spike hyzer is the line ( backhand or flick ) . There will be a little tree lotto involved , but there is a hole.
If you lay up in the fairway, it will be a total crap shoot to get your 3. Tiny little trail back to the pin from the fairway. It will get some mixed responses, but I think it will be fun.

How long is this new pin?!? I personally really like it on the long there. Great risk/reward hole...especially for me who throws a roller on it!

No. The only 3 people that have 3'd the hole(champ 8 to 10 long basket) is: Scott Stokely, Craig Leyva, and Aaron Little.
I would call it 40-50 short of the long, approx another 40-50 right into the woods. Put your roller down for this one, it is not going to happen! Big spike hyzer is the line! Much like making love to a fine woman, you have just got to find the right hole!
Tee, hee-hee! :D

Sure he can......but i've been golfing with him for 13 years and he hasn't yet.
I had my best chance to do it in 1997. Got a drive off of the mountain and past the 3 huge trees in the middle of the fairway. Threw the next shot as hard as i could only to be gobbled up by the last few Mesquite trees. Easy 4.

I haven't seen the driver mini yet. Heard about McCoy's score on 888 with one though.... :D
The things frigging boom, I swear I threw one about 150 feet @ about 50 percent last night! uber stable compared to their counterparts! I got an extra one I will give you!

Depending on the #'s I would like everyone to play this layout, if the #'s are off we'll have another 9 holes layed out for some of the other divisions.

We are headed back to the land of the LoneStar for the VPO :D Always have enjoyed this tournament. DiscBoomer has been working with myself and the VPO gang and some COOL things are in the works. He is donating a basket to be solely used to give away to spectators of the Final Day of the VPO. We are also holding a raffle open to everyone to support EDGE in the DFW area schools. Des and I are seeding this raffle with a SkillShot basket, USDGC package and a Candy CE Roc! We would greatly appreciate any other donations for this worthy cause.
ps:This is being announced on i heard its a go from that one guy information. If this is stepping on toes, I am stupid. We are launching today, see you first in Oklahoma.

I'm going to finish out the year in Advanced and try Pro in the spring. I REALLY haven't played much since the TX10 final, and don't expect to play much again until April since work is starting to take over again, and the nights are getting shorter. Night golf is an option, but we'll see. If I could putt consistently I'd say forget all of that, but I just don't have much time to practice it.

Played a practice round, and then some of the champion holes and final nine...those are nucking futs! #2 is always fun, as are #8, 17, and 18. #11 to 12's basket was nice, and so was #13 to 14's basket. All 6 of those holes are legitimate par 5's, depending on the wind. If it's a 15-20+ mph headwind, 5 is good, considering all of those are over 650'. The first time through, there was headwind on #2, #8 (OUCH!) and 11/12, then the next time through it was a headwind on 13/14, 17, and 18. Weird...
Can't wait to play them this weekend!

I expect to not be in the top group. If I am not in the top group then I am alone, sigh, playing with an odd group somewhere else..... :(
I am currently looking at the signed up list of MPM and I am fearing that I may end up as the odd man out if we do not have more people sign up. Please Masters, don't let a newby Master player be all alone! Sign up today!!!
So Jerry are you saying this is a list of nobodies? I think of few of us would take exception to that :p :p
MPM Richard Gutzman
MPM Jerry Power
MPM Tom Lowry
MPM Ron Silliman
MPM Vinnie Miller
I assure you there will be more, they just don't know how to sign up early. /msgboard/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

Thats why we wanted you in Oklahoma this last weekend.
23 MPM's.
Why are you busting someone's chops for not coming to Tulsa. In the last 6 years you have never been to any events in Tyler and have only been to Z Boaz twice. There are MANY Great events in Texas that you have missed.

I know I wanted to come, but the wife had plans to spend the weekend with her mom and it is a bit of a drive for me.

I wasn't busting his chops, his own brother was trying to get him up here.
I know Texas has many, many great events and I plan on playing some of them over the next year. The last two years have been devoted to the 06 worlds in Tulsa.
The next fews years are devoted to me. ;)
See you in Tejas.

MA1 is full for pre-registration. I've talked to Ben and told him to take that option off of titleDISC. If the tournament does not fill by Friday at 4 PM I'll release the spots that are left for most divisions. Give me a few minutes and I'll post the player's list.
