Just received a phone call from Discraft:

The 2006 ace race disc was submitted to the PDGA for testing under the name The Meteor.

The Meteor is now approved by the PDGA and all molds (prototypes and beyond) are legal for tournament play.

OK, I'll bite...so what is this Meteor disc, what are its flight characteristics, and who has tried it??? Do I need to run out and buy one because it will "most definitely lower my score"???

It's like your favorite beat up putter that turns over easily, but with a bit more glide. It will definately come in handy here in East TN for our mountain golf. I don't think it will have much use in the "wide open" states with wind (OK, KS, TX) - IMO, the disc is best used For short turnover holes under 300'

This ace race disc was definitely my favorite of the four (Breeze, Glide, Slipstream GT, Meteor). It is straight at slow speeds and has a gentle turn at higher speeds, kinda reminded me of a beat d buzzz. It has some good glide and is a little longer than other mids. I don't think it will find a place in my bag, but I do feel others will find it useful.

Kinda sounds like your are describing a Glide...is it faster? How does it compare to a Glide???

I actually really like the Glide for turnover mid-range drives...

Since the name is similar to the Comet, how similar is it to this disc? I've head faster, but the same type of flight. For some reason, I'm imagining it's similar to an Element. Can anyone offer comparisons?

If you put any kind of speed/snap on it, it WILL turn over. I don't think it's like a comet, it's more flippy.

Cool. Do you think it's slower or faster than a comet?

I've heard good things about it...quick question, is it ESP or X plastic?

McCabe

It's in the ESP Plastic. I think it's a GREAT disc for tight fairway shots or turnovers.

Funny, just as I was posting that, the UPS guy shows up with all my ACE Race goods (I'm TD'ing the Ace Race locally on Oct 7th at Indiantown park in VA) Sweet feeling disc, and what a KILLER grand prize! (Tourbag, towel, hat, full color mini, bag tag and 10 Z Meteors) I hope I win!

I think it may be a bit slower. It does feel great in the hands though. I don't think it will fly as far as the comet, when you throw it with any snap/speed, it's gonna start to turn over almost immediately, even when release with severe hyzer.

In my opinion, this disc would fly like a beat-up comet, but slower. So not really a comet at all. The comparison to "your favorite beat up putter, but faster" was exactly how I would describe it. The plastic is what I like most about the disc- it makes for a great feel in the hand and doesn't beat up too fast, so it's a dependable turnover disc that can take a beating without becoming a different disc altogether. Definitely NOT an element, too slow and too understable. Hope this helps. :)

That does help. When I (finally) lose my super super super beat up wizard, that sounds like a pretty good replacement disc.

It does feel good in the hands, and the fact that it is durable plastic and turns over brand new doesnt hurt it's cause at all. It is great for short turnovers (under 275-300)
I think this disc filled a hole in discrafts line, for me at least. I throw both Innova and Discraft.

I threw a full round on a local course 'beauty' and it wasn't the best disc for an all around disc. I could get it to fly straight about 150ish feet, trying to throw it any further than that and I had to mess with some severe hyzer. It probably didn't help that my first 7 holes on it were through tight woods... If I were to lose my 170 beat e wizard, this would possibly be able to replace it, but after a few trees, it was just too flippy for me. Maybe a heavier one in Z plastic would be sweet. I did get chain with it on the one 200 foot straight shot.

I forgot to mention, the one I'm throwing is a 175g. I noticed that the lighter ones were much flippier out of the box, so I'm happy to have started out with one a bit more stable. I'll keep it in the bag as long as it keeps getting me anhyzer birdies :D.

I've seen a few guys throw it around 300' with a little hyzer.
BTW, you can spred that prize package over several players.
Give the bag and a disc for first, then go down from there. Makes for more happy players.

this is not a hard disc to throw over 300'....

now to do so accurately is the key, which I have the lock for.....

We had a distance competition at our ace race and there were some pretty good bombs with this thing. I think the farthest was about 450 (we had a nice tail wind). :D

I think the Meteor is the best of the One Disc Ace Race discs.

I think that it flies like a flippy putter.

I also think that it is a good straight flyer for new players.

Over 100 players in Birmingham. Most really like the new disc and all of them like the great deal from Discraft..
This event is growing year by year. Good job Keith.

I believe the final count was 36 at our ace race Saturday. I only heard one person to say they actually liked it, and 3 people to say once it might work it's way into regular rotation.
Still anxious to throw the Torq though! I think that would have made for a better ace race disc.

The torque is very similar to a used buzzz. Granted the one that I had thrown was the Am Nationals one that they got in their players pack. A very nice disc though. Very straight.

I have 4 new, 2 used - ESP Meteors.

PM me for weights and colors.

http://webpages.charter.net/berrybunch/tradediscs.JPG

I ran an Ace Race here and had a few leftovers.

I'd compare it to a Comet, a bit smaller diameter, and much more understable. If you put any snap on it, it was rolling. It does have a TON of glide though.

Feb 19 2007, 12:44 PM
Anyone know of an online vendor that has meteors for sale??

superberry
Feb 19 2007, 02:40 PM
Why online vendor? I have them for cheaper than online. I just want to get rid of the extras, they're not doing us any good sitting here, and we're already out the money we paid for them.

Is there going to be another Ace Race this year? I saw on the Discraft website that holes should typically be between 180-250ft. and here in BG we have a perfect 9 hole course behind an elementary school that would be great to host the event.
