Registration has begun for the South Carolina Disc Golf Championships on October 21-22. The flyer can be downloaded and printed from www.columbiadiscgolfclub.com (http://www.columbiadiscgolfclub.com) or www.scdgo.net. (http://www.scdgo.net.)

For those who haven't played, this is Columbia's crosstown tournament, featuring 2 rounds apiece on 2 very different courses. Earlewood is a short course with extreme elevation, huge trees, and great variety---a very fun course in the opinions of most players of all skill levels. Owens is a mix of long boomer holes and tight wooded holes, flat, challenging to the best players and punishing bad shots---a challenging course even when the autumn winds aren't blowing. The contrast means your strengths will gain you strokes in some rounds....while your opponents' strengths will play in others.

Plans at this time are for Random Draw doubles on Friday afternoon at Owens, where fewer players are familiar and may want the extra practice---but check closer to tourney time to confirm---and for John and Chris Wright to provide the food services.

This is an awesome tournament for those who don't know! If you've never played earlwood, well all I can say is that I've never heard anybody come off the course and say, "I hate this place", but again I have heard MANY say, "This course isn't that hard; I should be shooting much better than this!" So let pre-register/fill this tournament early just like the Earlwood classic in March.

I had a great time at this event last year. It is nice to mix up the event like this too. I will be there for sure.

The Charleston Disc Golf Club will be hosting a Match Play tournament this Saturday (9/30/06) at 11:00 AM at Park Circle in N. Charleston. There will be 2 divisions and some prizes for grabs. Not to mention some cash. All are welcome. cdgc@bellsouth.net Let me know if you fell like playing.

Spots are still available. This tournament has not filled in recent years, so odds are you can sign up on the day of the tournament. But if you expect to play, please help us out and pre-register; a huge registration on the morning of the tournament puts a strain on the service and getting started on time.

Looks like a great weekend shaping up---sunny, low 70s, perfect disc golf weather.

For those who don't know, the State Fair is in town, just down the road from Owens Field. Convenient if you want to attend. On the other hand, as you leave Owens Field from Friday doubles, and to a lesser degree from Saturday's round, be forewarned of possible traffic snarls. Shouldn't be much of an issue on the commute between rounds, however.

Team Chuck, rolling in Friday. I wonder what the NC field will look like with that other thing going on.

Is there any new suprises at Owens? Is there a nice map, like last year, online anywhere?

Lets play some golf!

Owens field map available through columbiadiscgolfclub.com, specifically at http://www.columbiadiscgolfclub.com/owens_course_layout.htm

No suprises at Owens other than some thinning of the thickets. Ed Garris has done a ton of work out thereI understand #4 (tight, straight shot) will be played from the short tee. And to my knowledge we will be playing all the holes (due to construction, last year we skipped two and played two temporary holes). Oh, yes, a tree fell over the tee area on #16---not sure whether it's being removed, or the hole revised.

A high school track stadium is expected to be built at Owens Field, possibly affecting holes 1, 17, & 18.....so this may be the last chance to play in the current configuration.

Scores are posted.

Travis Sauls gets his first win---at any level---but not before almost squandering a 9-stroke lead in the final round to a red-hot Josh Childs, who smoked the course with a 42 (round rating 1047) and cut the lead to 1 stroke entering the final hole.

Memorable was the cold, steady rain for almost the entire 3rd round at the already-tough-enough Owens Field.
