I think I remember reading some story about changing the name from hole to something that fits.
If this is still up for debatt ,then I suggest it be changed from hole to pole. Then we can even use the same expressions as. Nicely poled. He poled out and so on.
To me it seems a almost logical.
Let's go play some poles

I think that might not go over too well with a certain demographic.
.....then again, they might never actually catch on to the pun. :D

Doesn't matter what you call the target, the tee to pin combination is generally called a hole.

It the hole requires a lot of touch and finess, you can call it a "touch hole"

This is a pretty good discussion.
I guess I really never thought calling them "Holes" was inaccurate, but Ive been doing it so long It would be pretty hard to quit. Kind of like the way I still say Frisbee golf, it's to the point. Disc golf comes with explainations while Frisbee golf does not, after all its just like ball golf using frisbees!
Heres the common phrases;
" what pole are you starting on"?
"what basket did you end on"?
"How many pins do you have left to play"?
"I just made a pole in one"?
They just dont sound right, replace hole with each newly suggested word and it's a done deal.

I thought Budweiser was a grease solvent. I've never thought of it as a beer.

No, but it would at least have a chance of being good beer.

As long as the word "golf" is in the title of this sport, they will always be called "holes" regardless of the type of target you're throwing at. On another note, I have to disagree with the earlier comment that "frisbee" golf is an appropriate term for this sport. The word frisbee makes me think of a newby at Pease throwing a dinner platter. It also misleads a future golfer who would think they could go to Wal Mart, but a Whamo, and play this game effectively.....uummmm good luck!

OK , but telling the National Guard and Security at the Airport , these are Frisbees for Professional Competition, makes you go through the check in process alot quicker !!!!

Or better yet...try bringing a "Birdie Bag" through airport security! I can see it now...."Sir, whats that white powdery substance in that bag along with those unidentified circular objects?" Wait, maybe this post should be on the Drug Testing Thread...but I digress. ;)

of course they couldnt. but we dont tell our 3 year olds to stop riding toy "cars" just because those cars wont work on the highway.
i call it frisbee golf - the first time - because in my epxerience people get it. then i call it disc golf ater that.
call it disc golf to someone who never heard of it and after five minutes of arduous explanation they say "oh! its like golf but with a frisbee!"

DGA invented the first formal Disc Golf target, the Pole Hole when starting the fledgling sport of Disc Golf over 30 years ago. The successor to the Pole Hole, the Disc Pole Hole has become established and accepted worldwide as the standard for the sport of Disc Golf.
Disc Golf uses Disc Pole Holes that serve like a "hole" would in ball golf. Disc Pole Holes are also known by various nicknames like "baskets", "targets", "goals" and "catchers".

Also "things." We had a guy who was out throwing a football with his kids near a fairway the other day and when we sent a spotter out to watch and make sure they knew we were coming, he yelled something about going ahead and throwing and that he'd "be a thing," and he held his arms out to pretend he was the basket. Which was funny since it was about 60 feet left of him.

urm....
Why didn't we just dig a hole in the ground?
A hole a couple of inches larger in radii than a disc would be harder to stick than a basket/pole hole/target/whatchamacallit...
Hell, our minis could become our most important disc  ;)

A new thread-low has been reached. In "golf" you play "holes", no matter if you are throwing a disc or hitting a ball. In disc golf, baskets are generally planted into the ground (via a HOLE in the ground in most cases).
