Phil and Sergio have taken the wrath from this same question. So who is it in disc golf? I have my thoughts about it and the first name that comes to mind is Steve Rico. What do you think?

I think he won the Japan Open.

My votes would be for Johnny McCray, Walt Haney, Mike Moser and maybe Mike Randolph (though he could win a major if he quits getting injured (whether his fault or not))

Maybe I'm getting my Randolphs mixed but I thought he won too?

This thread made me go look at the players over 1000, holy cow is the group getting big. It seems we are finally getting over the cusp in terms of having a real pool of top players!

What about Markus? Definitly in the top one or two Europeans. I agree on McCray. I've been hearing that name a long time with no top win.

Mose has a Worlds Doubles title in 1996 with Ahart.

Not sure Jesper or Markus have a Major title since the European Open this year is the first time it was a Major. Along with McCray, they are the highest rated players without a Major along with Micah Dorius and Matt Orum.

I should have been more clear and stated a singles Major win. Even though I feel doubles majors are just as important, I wanted to exlude am worlds, USADGC, etc, etc.

In a blast from the past, Scott Stokely and Crazy John Brooks only had a shot at Worlds (singles) under the Junnila Majors criteria and "only" won Worlds Doubles titles. Just like some of the guys mentioned above, they finished as high as second at Worlds.

ck34
Sep 05 2006, 06:26 PM
Very few keep track of those who finish second but it would be interesting to see a list of players who were Climo'd, that is players who finished second to Climo at Majors he won and never beat him with a win. We know Barry broke thru but I'd have to see if Feldberg, Russell or Todd ever finished second to Climo in a Major before their wins. I'm pretty sure Craze and Stokely are on the Climo'd list and possibly Randolph.

wasn't the Japan Open recently added to the "major" list? if so, then i'd put steve back on top of that list with scott martin, johnny mccray, matt orum, schwebe, and the 2006 florida state champion, garrett gurthie close behind.

Sayre is on that list.

Sayre has a handful of SuperTour wins. Those were the majors before there were majors. :DHe did finish top 5 in two different World Champs though. He's My_Hero......of course, i learned from him and Sam Grizzaffi....another golfer that "found 2nd place behind Climo" at Worlds. In fact, Sammy "gave" Climo his 1st Worlds.

As far as Major's
Don't think Sayre, Grasaffi or Nolan Grider have won Majors and they are Texas's best players in Open over the years.

Our best Masters player keeps comming in the top of Masters each year, Joel Kelly.

Mike cashed at VPO last year and then didn't play very well at The Players Cup in Florida.

As far as I know, that was the last event he has played.

My vote is for Scott Martin. In the last five years he has had a 36th place ,a 15th place, an 11th place, And the rest have been top ten. If Scott could tour like some of these other guys there is no telling what he could do.

Gotta mention Larry Leonard - over 100 wins in a career and at one time was thought to be the best golfer in the world not named Ken Climo.

What about Jesper Lundmark - has he won a major?

Oklahoma's Kevin McCoy or Coda Hatfield probably deserve strong mention in this field.

I imagine Coda will get one sooner or later, and McCoy's always hanging around the top.

Trust me - I am very well aware of your dubs title being that I am a TDSA lifer. At least, I included you on a list of best disc golfers!!!!

If you got a problem with that, maybe you should just beat me by 40 strokes this weekend :DSee you both in Stillwater!

Just a suggestion, which I will be sending to the PDGA office, but wouldn't it be nice to have a list and bio for all World title holders? For instance, there is no place to go to see ALL of Ken's wins described is there?

Lynne Warren wrote a great article on the Open Men World Champions in the Summer 2005 issue of DGWN. It has photos and bios on all the Champs, plus the top finishers for each year. It does include info on all of Kenny's wins (except 2006).
