Carrier Park replaces Richmond Hills in Cross State Doubles!!!!
A temporary course at Carrier Park in Western Asheville will replace Richmond Hills in this years event. 18 Discatchers are being provided by Innova to set up this incredible course, with existing concrete and asphalt being used for most of the tees. Only a few will require temp mat tees.
From what I understand this is a premier park that the locals have wanted to play golf at for years.
Thanks to the Asheville City Officials for making this property available for our use in this special event. And of course James Nichols for all the work he has done.
Late registration and the first round will still be at Mars Hill College and Carrier will be played second.
The Sunday morning round will be at Warrior's Path using 4 new permanent holes on the 24 hole course that was redesigned for a new park Boundless Playground and wheelchair accessible tree house. Fossil Hill will remain unchanged, except the rough is rougher!
Remember 36 team max with long sleeve tee shirts for all preregistrants. Sign up soon!!
Engraved matching pair trophy mugs for the champions in the offered divisions.

I hope folks will come & enjoy this 20th anniversary event.
I am most likely going to be focusing on building a house next year so Fossil Hill may not be included. Probably transition to Winged Deer.

Portable DisCatchers likely set up for Saturday afternoon only, that is one of the reasons we are limiting the field to 36 teams, can't take a chance having one stolen if no one is around to watch over them, James has the Carrier Park design approved by Asheville officials and may have it set up Friday, but things are still in flux because we expected to use Richmond Hills. I'll post a link to the design when I get it. I know James has worked his butt off trying to work around the RH issue.

It depends on what NC wants next year, It ends in Tn this year so I don't have to haul all the trophies & prizes across the mountain to a place without shelter for the award presentation. It is the first time in 20 years that it has not alternated, either with Horizons or Cedarock. Plus since I started this event with Ken Weyandt @ Horizons in 1987 and am TDing my last one I didn't think it would be a particular problem to make it a bit easier for me, guess I didn't take some new folks into account. Have you sent your & Shawns entry yet? It's the first one for you isn't it?

Don't understand why this was switched to Asheville when they don't even attend the event. Thanks for show n Ghosthorse.
Because the round trip between courses went from 490 miles down to less than 180. People had complained for years that even though the 2 courses @ Cedarock were a great balance that the ride was a bit much and there were very few Burlington teams anyway, Tennessee players have always been the majority of the field and the option of staying at home and saving the extra gas and motel expense was very appealing. Out of towners can stay in Johnson City and be less than an hour from everything. Once Asheville gets back on its' feet there should be the best attendance ever. Kinda hard to put your best foot forward when your course is closed.
Your check did not come today either.

Not trying to knock this area or region, but this isn't exactly a "hotbed" for disc golf. There are some things (IMO) that may need to be looked at or changed to further the promotion and participation of the sport in this area. Once some of those issues are dealt with, we may see greater participation and more support from the disc golfers in the area, then maybe we can develop better golfers and create a bigger field for all divisions.

Not at all convinced by that.
For instance in the 2005 calendar year there were 63 A tier, National Tour and Majors alone. I'm waiting for someone to seriously support the contention that that many "Showcase" events are warranted. Then you add the rank and file B C & D tier events .....
When we began doing this and the Lakefront Open most of our players came from NC, now you guys have to drive by events to come here. No matter how hard we try to make the events in E. Tennessee appealing the explosion of courses [thanks to Innova] thus events in the Carolinas trump everything we do. I was never convinced that making this a PDGA event was in anyone's real interest but I did not seriously oppose. I know the PDGA likes it because 70% of the participants pay the $5 fee!
I've been told to raise $3000 - $5000 dollars to draw more players [i.e. pros who come by for the weekend and take everything we have done a year to collect then leave without as much as a 'thank you sirs'].
That's why all this years sponsorship efforts went into shirts for everyone instead of a bonus for the Pros. I'm a share the bounty sort of guy. I would rather this be a non sanctioned event as an end of the year get together than a seriously competitive event.
I'm just an old timer with a two decade perspective. That plus 50 cents will make a local call in most places.
Old and in the way,,, right Cam??? And congratulations on the dozen people you got to come to your Ace Race. But I'll give you the benefit of doubt as a new comer without the local perspective Tim, Paul, Vern ....and I have after giving the best part of our lives to promote events here. I think last years Ace Race disc was the main deterent for this years tourney.(poor participation) I had 25 last year. I had more then that at the Cancer Benefit tourney I ran last year. People just aren't into "club" golf around here.(functions/tournies, etc...) We show up on Tuesday Eve to play the club mini, the lot is full, yet there are only 12 folks playing the mini  What can we do as a club to get those newbies to join us for the round? Possibly change the format?
Fossil
Oct 20 2006, 05:47 PM
You're right Cam, we've tried format changes and I have mentioned that one round of 24 should be enough. The main complaint I hear is that folks don't want to spend all afternoon (12:30 til 6 or 7) to play two rounds of 20 or a 20 & a 24.
Thanks for the suggestions.

Oct 20 2006, 06:57 PM
There are some other options for the weekly mini's though. I think new players are intimidated playing with and against the experienced players. If you think about it, it doesn't matter who J-Bird, Tic Tac or Tim draw in doubles, there are only a handful of holes that they don't always reach or birdie. So, regardless of their partner, they will usually shoot very well at Warriors. I know when I first started, I was intimidated playing with some of the "top Pros" in the area, thinking that I was dragging them down. A possibility is to have Pros play Pros and Adv play Adv, etc.. I would step up and play Pro in the weeklies if I knew I'd be paired w/another Pro player, plus I wouldn't want to play for plastic. Right now, what is my incentive to play open in the weeklies? Tim, J-bird, Tic Tac and Vic are considerably better then me playing singles. I can play Adv at the weeklies and still usually do good enough to at least win my cash back, it shouldn't be like that. I guarantee you if you teamed Pro with Pro and paid Ams plastic, there would be at least 4-5 people step up and play Pro, including myself. I know the novice/beginner players would feel more comfortable playing each other. Pay the Ams plastic, don't let them take home cash. I have several friends here that don't play the mini's for these reasons.
I've never seen such a "home friendly" course as Warriors. I'd put (any 2 of these 3 players) Tim Barr, J Bird and Tic Tac against Barry Shultz and Climo at Warriors anyday, and still prolly give 2 strokes :D

I can't speak for doubles but Tim said that he & TT & JB may play the flights as a cash round for them only making the open division open up and that should trickle down.

Yeah, he told me that next year they (Tim, Tic Tac and J) were just going to play each other for $20 a head. That would def help the flights.

There are 2 spots left as I sign off tonight.
Will be at Mars Hill tomorrow about 8:30 ish.
Players meeting at 9:30 sharp.
Everyone needs to sign in and those without shirts can get them then too.
Goodnight & drive safe.
Wow! What a gorgeous day for golf. Thanks John for running another awesome cross-state. I got to watch Cam-bagger put on a real show today. I believe he's carrying around way more sand than I am right now. It's going to be really tough to catch those guys tomorrow. I believe Carrier Park had a lot of fun shots, but overall, it was a bad idea. Way too many people, plus I had my 2004 CE Roc stolen :mad:by one of the patrons of the park. I understand the circumstances, but for the love of God, please let's get Richmond Hill back. Good luck everybody. Sorry about the whinning.

It was a nice day of golf for sure. We played great as partners yesterday. I do agree about Carrier Park, especially the shot we had to throw over the bochi ball court. Today is a new day, lets see if we can close the deal.

Final scores are up .....
J-Bird announced that he & Tic Tac are splitting up after overpowering the field for years. They did this with the hope it will bring more Pro teams to the event, which they will continue to support.
You guys need to really rag your peers (the 1000 + rated players) about wussing out facing you on your home turf ( or possibly about anywhere)!!
Thanks to everyone who filled the field on our
20th Anniversary !!!
Sincerely

Trash talking is not the way to get more folks to come out to your tourney. I'm glad I went and played in the best B Tier in NC of the year, DEPC! Unfortunately it fell on the same weekend as this tourney on these great courses.
Congrats to J-Bird and Tic Tac! See yall boys soon!

" rag your peers (the 1000 + rated players)"
I meant this in a good 'tongue in cheek' kinda thing not in some serious malicious way.
And in a poll of the full field (thanks again for attending everyone) it was unanimous that no one was coming because this is sanctioned. Also no one said that they would not be coming back if it returns to its' non sanctioned roots. If the top rated players want to come to a more laid back post USDGC event, this could be it. Camping on a private course (or two!) - cookout, 20 years and forward>>>>>

Thanks to all that volunteered or helped with the tourney. Thanks John for letting us use your course, it's definately the best in the area. Thanks Grubb for the great shots and putts. Had a great time all weekend and look forward to this tourney in the years to come, especially if it is non sanctioned and there is camping out on the property.

Why do the players want it to be non sanctioned?

About 50 of the 72 players were not members or choose to not keep their membership current, mostly the former. That's about $350 in PDGA fees paid by folks who do not choose to be annual members. Plus what do doubles 'points' mean anyway, if there are doubles points ... no player ratings are generated for those who are current ... other than a revenue stream for our organization why are any doubles sanctioned? Other than the general 'to support the organization' warm & fuzzy feeling any particular player may gain what other benefit is there for these folks. And it may just be a sign of the times but we had more players in the years before we sanctioned, which is a relatively recent practice.
I generally post infrequently, other than promoting area events, especially Lakefront Disc Golf Club PDGA events, and am about to resume that practice now that we are done until the 22nd Lakefront Open @ Warrior's Path State Park, Kingsport Tn. in May.
Don't let this make you think I don't support the PDGA. I just renewed as a Pro for 5 years, even though the combination of arthritis & injury in my hand has kept me from competing for a few years. I pay the same full fee as the top Pros in the game, even though I never expect to be able to compete again.

There are not alot of players here who play tournies through out the year, only a handful. That's why they don't join the PDGA and have to pay the extra $5. I am like John in a sense that I will pay my dues anyways. I like this board to chat and the magazine

If it's non sanctioned Maybe I'll attend again. But with 3 "Pro" teams it really wasn't worth the driven. Or have one Pro division. I really enjoyed all the course except "Carrier" but saw an awesome -14 with birdies on all the back nine. Congrats TicBird and I think you should continue playn together until someone beats ya. BS
