Goodmorning!!
I am an enthousiastic discgolfer from the Netherlands and I have just won a trip for 2 persons to Miami. This vacation will take place in either january or february 2007.
This trip was offered by lipton Ice Tea. This company has chosen the sport of discgolf to build their brand upon (check www.discgolf.nl (http://www.discgolf.nl)). It's really amazing how much they are investing in a sport that is soooo small in Holland...not without succes by the way...
Anyway, the goal is to make this holiday a discgolf holiday. I have allready spoken to ken Climo ( he was in invited in Holland to play the Lipton Ice Cup) and he mentioned that there might be a tournament called The Cross Canyon, somewhere in Florida.
I am trying to find information on that tournament or other tournaments that take place in January or february 2007 in the Florida region. I still have a little time left for desciding when to go, so I am hoping that somebody will be kind enough to help us out a little!
It has always been a dream to play in the U.S.A. and playing a tournament there would be the cherry on the cake.
Thanks in advance for any reaction!!

Cross Canyon would be a great choice! Note that there are two weekends---one for Ams in January, one for Pros, probably in early February. It is held on a private course with incredible hills and cliffs.
You should be able to find more info on the Tour section (check the listings for January & February 2006).
The course can be searched under Brooksville, Florida. For vacation purposes, this is 45-60 minutes from Tampa, 60-90 minutes from Orlando (Disney, etc.).
Caution that the landowner has had this land for sale, so there's no guarantee that it will still be there in 2007. Check with those who run the tourney on the latest news on that front.

Thanks very much for the reply.
I allready heard that is not really certain tht the tournament will be held. I can't seem to find any information on it on the upcoming events section of the PDGA site...Do they have a website i can visit or is there somebody I can contact?

Dates for 2007 events can't be pinned down until all of the Majors and National Tour dates are set which usually isn't until Oct 1st or so. Then, A-tier and lower events can get on the 2007 schedule. So, it may not be until late October that you'll see January and February events listed.

Try http://www.gdisc.com/ and go to events page (link near bottom). Or dig your way through the cluttered webpage to find a contact---Joe G. is the guy who runs this tournament.

Michiel,
It must've been a real treat to have Kenny and some of the other top US players come over for the Lipton Cup!
Should you come in early 2007, there are plenty of events going on already here in Florida, including the Cross Canyon Challenge. If you decide to come up that way, let me know, as we are opening a disc golf store in Brooksville, where the Cross Canyon takes place and we may even have some room for you to stay, as we live only 10 minutes from the course. We also have (4) other courses in the immediate area, including the Red Hawk course which plays host to The Players Cup, a PDGA Major event!
In addition, there is an event in Miami in January and also another event called the Jim Ulshafer Memorial which also takes place at the Gran Canyon course in Brooksville. Click HERE for the Fabulous Florida Tour website, which includes a schedule for all events.
Thanks!

Hi Mike,
it really was fantastic to play with Ken, Avery, Nate, David, Valerie and Burl...I really felt priviledged..I could talk about it for another hour, but I hope to be able to tell you in person.
Thanks for the information. The cross canyon challenge is the tournament we are aiming for. All I need now is to know when in january it is going to take place, so I can book flights.
Therefor I have allready contacted the TD of the tournament and hopefully next monday I'll get to hear the exact dates.
Thank you for your kind offer for a place to stay, we might actually need one as our hotel is in Miami and we would have to travel some distance to get to Brooksville.
Another idea might be to not book a hotel in Miami, but in Brooksville or surroundings because there seems to be more discgolf activity there. Descisions....
Any suggestions??
Thanks,
Michiel
By the way: check me on a Lipton Discgolfposter, there were thousands of them in Holland at busstops etc...:

I asked Joe G.(Cross Canyon TD) about this at the store the other day because I also have out of town friends visiting that want to play the challenge. He said it would be the weekend before the Super Bowl (Feb. 4), so I guess that would be the last weekend in January for the Ams.

I see Ron Russell tied for second with John E. McCray this past weekend one back of Double G in the Florida State Championships. One time showing or is he getting active again?

Ron had told me that he was having problems with his knee and he was giving it time to heal up, if it didn't heal he may need surgery. Of course he was hoping that he wouldn't have to go that route. I imagine since he played, his knee must be doing better, hence you may be seeing him play more often, let's hope so!

I asked him the same thing. He is currently working as the owner/operator of a roofing company over in Melbourne. He got his company up and running pretty well. He said he would like to make the Player's Cup event but work is keeping him very busy. That's the only event I heard him say that he was going to try and make it to.
It was nice to see Ron again though. It's been a while. He seemed to be having a bit of back trouble during the round, he also had his knee wrapped with a flexible brace. He can still putt though!

Congrats Double G!!! Is this his first PDGA win?? I think I remember him always complaining he could never win against either McCray or Climo.

Yes this was his first win. Ron and I tied for 2nd and GG won by a stroke. We are very proud of GG and our Gateway South Team made sure he knew that at the awards ceremony! He's a great guy and we wish to see more wins from him!
