For those of you with a creative side, we are having a contest to help us develop the art for our newest disc the "Inferno".
The winner will be rewrded with 25 of the new disc as well as any 25 other Gateway or Gateway-Quest discs.
( a $500.00 plus value)
We are wide open to any and all ideas.
We have a few people working on this already, so get going!! We want to have something by Thursday so we can use it in the next DGWN issue.
The art can either be a guy flying that is ripped with muscles and on fire,
A disc flying that is on fire,
Or a cool text of the word on fire.
A lot of times the art is a colaboration from a few different people, so if we combine your art with someone elses, we will make sure to give each person at least a box of 25!
Thanks in advance and good luck.
Please send the art to
[email protected]
an adobe illustrator file is best, but we can work with just about anything done on a computer.
If someone wants to fax me a copy of something hand drawn, please call or email me and I'll give you the fax number!
The contest will go on until we have the art we like!

Does this need to be a finished product drawing or can it be a concept drawing?

We will take just about anything, even a hand drawn fax.
The response has been great so far, but no one has sent a guy flying that is on fire!
Google search inferno man for a good place to start with a guy flying!

Cool idea in hopes of generating some new art Dave.
Don't do what i did. I read "inferno man" from the above post, but accidentally Gooogled "Burning man." Neat art in the NV desert, but not exaclty what you are looking for.

Steve, This art would be great for full color and we will probably get some done eventually.
Can you redraw this in line art for foil stamping, so I can see if it looks 1/2 as cool? Tis is pretty much what I had in mind.
The contest is still going, we have had over 75 submssions and some really cool text.
I would like to see this guy with the words inferno under it in line art ( preferably in Illustrator)
Keep them coming until I give the word we have something fully complete!
This has been fun!, time consuming, but fun and eventually worth it!!
I may do it for another disc we have coming out.

so how much do you have to change a copyrighted image to avoid liability?
Plankeye
Sep 01 2006, 05:29 PM
probably more than changing a 4 to a G or doing a mirror image of it.

you have to change it enough so that the the general public "isn't confused as to which one is the original." In other words, it has to be obvious that you changed a good portion of it.
I would consider both in question to be plagerism.

An artist once told me 75% but that could be message board distance.

ACK! **** hair balls.
Copying "art" is cheating, and just like cheating in disc golf ... it will get you nowhere. ;)

We will make sure we dont use copyrwrited art, besides once these logos get into line art they dont even look the same?
Now if we decided to use one for full color that would change in entirely.
Would you guys( pre law students) think I had a copywrite lawsuit on someone that is currently using tourbag, or starter for their disc golf bag?
After all Gateway has been using the name tour bag since 95 and others starting using the name just a few years back.
Now they are using starter bag.
I'm not the boy named sue though, calling some of the imports that have failed miserbly the tour bag could definately be hurting my sales of tour bags.

it seems like "tour bag" or "starter bag" are decriptive terms like "snow tire" or "all season" tire. i have little legal expertise, but from what i hear anyone can sue anyone anytime. whether the case has enough merit to prevail in court is another matter...
that said, i can see why it might leave a strange taste in your mouth. sometimes imitation is just a form of flattery ;)

You may not want to open a can or worms and have the PGA come after you for using "tour bag". They have been using it much longer than it has been around in disc golf. /msgboard/images/graemlins/ooo.gif
