Attention: Disc Golfers of Live Oak, San Antonio and the surrounding area
There is a saying, If you are going to dream, then dream BIG! This has been the growing sentiment for Live Oak and Alamo disc golf for the past couple of years in regards to hosting a future Worlds event in our area.
It is upon this vision a few disc golfers got together and started pursuing a vision of their own to finally have a disc golf course San Antonio could call its own. After seven months of planning and working in cooperation with the San Antonio Parks and Recreation Department it now looks as if this dream may come true.
The crew of Shawn Low, Wayne Atkinson, Matt Farrar, and Turbo Guckian has curtailed their disc golf play in order to make this a reality with a new disc golf course in Bryan McClain City Park. We would like to apologize up front for our lack of involvement in local minis and area tournaments during this time. We hope to soon meet all the new disc golfers who have started play in the area and catch up with everyone else.
Now for the exciting course details Bryan McClain Park is located on Oconner road inside loop 1604. The main entrance is behind Longs Creek Elementary school on Knoll Creek. Bryan McClain Park will be a newly updated park with jogging trails and an 18 hole disc golf course complete with concrete tee pads. We can say with 99.9% certainty this course will be going in. Once we have a 100% certainty, further details and a production schedule will be posted for workdays. Course design has already been approved by San Antonio Parks and Recreation and a lot of preliminary work has been started. Upon an order confirmation and a delivery due date of 20 brand new Discatcher Pro baskets, your support and efforts will be appreciated to complete the next steps for the course in the form of chainsaws and muscle.
The projected completion date for the course is November 18th , the anniversary of the Aggie bonfire tragedy in which Brian McClain lost his life. Details for a Grand Opening event are pending. In order to show our gratitude for the citys support on this project we are encouraging you to e-mail District 10 City Councilman Christopher Chip Haass at
[email protected] We would also like to thank Carlos Mendez, who is with the department, for his hard work and determination to improve the park. Carlos, his staff and the rest of the Parks and Recreation Department have provided great support in planning this course and making it possible.
Check back to this thread for future postings and updates as they happen. Thanks in advance for your support and hope to see everyone on the course soon. And lets not forget LIIIIIIIVVVVVE OOOOOOAAAK!!!!

We plan on clearing a small amount of scrub brush from 3 holes and widening the fair way of a 4th. Loppers are needed. We also plan to take some portable baskets out and play what holes we can. If you have a portable basket and would like to bring it along, please contact me at

Is Brian McClain park going to have representitive at Texas Teams tis year?
Texas Teams Update 2006
Texas Teams will be held November 18th and 19th this year. Circle R Ranch near Wimberly will host the event once again.
From the website www.circularproductions.com (http://www.circularproductions.com) ...
The Concept
Every course in Texas is invited to send a team. Teams may also represent schools or other organizations. Some courses send more than one team.
The Format
Teams compete head-to-head, so when A-Town plays B-Ville, A-Towns #1 plays B-Villes #1, A-Towns #2 plays B-Villes #2etc. The team that wins the most individual matches gets the victory.
Rounds are 9 holes, and its all match play, so its not your total score that counts its how many holes you win.
Most teams will play 4 rounds on Saturday and 2-3 rounds on Sunday.
Entry Fee
$45 per player. Every player gets a tournament sweatshirt, a tournament disc, greens fee, and free lunch on Saturday. Camping is free for Texas Team Championships.
Team Makeup
There are two divisions Emerging and Established. Smaller towns and newer courses compete in the Emerging division. Teams consist of 6 players: 3 Advanced and 3 Intermediate.
Bigger cities and older courses compete in the Established division. Established teams have 9 players: 2 Pro, 2 Advanced, 2 Intermediate, 1 Master, 1 Amateur Woman, and one swing player (Pro Woman, Grand Master, or Advanced Master).
Payout
No cash, no prizes. Its all for team pride and fun. There will be trophies for the top teams, plus awards for Best Dressed Team and Most Spirited Team.
-----------------------------------------------------
There are only 9 spots on each established team...
Open Pro (2)
Pro Master (1)
Advanced (2)
Intermediate (2)
Am Woman (1)
Swing Player (Pro Woman, Grand Master or Advanced Master) (1)
I know there were many who felt left out or just didn't know about the tournament till we had already made up teams. so if you are interested in playing let's start talking about it now.

The work day was interesting to say the least... due to weather earlier in the week, the day was cancelled then back on then cancelled and was finally back on as of Friday... The city brought out a tree crew about 25 workers, a backhoe and several brush trucks. We were able to clear several fairways and made amazing progress. With one more workday from the city like this, the only thing the course will need are baskets and tee pads. Speaking of which, the baskets are in and waiting in the warehouse to be installed. We will work on coordinating the next work day starting Monday and hope everything works out to finish up the park before the end of November. We will keep you posted.

Does this park have its own parking lot or do we use the schools? im assuming it is the schools since you pull into the school to get to it.

Not open yet. the baskets and materials to install them are in. December 5 the city is supposed to start building a retaining wall to support the tee box for hole 1. We need one more work day from the city to clear holes 14 and 15 and remove all the brush piles. Tee signs will be ordered as soon as I complete sketches for each hole.
The school parking lot is the parking for the park... it does not have it's own. I will be updating the www.wolfriders.com (http://www.wolfriders.com) website soon with new pictures and the sketches. If all goes well, I think it will still open before the end of the year.

Went out to help for a couple of hours, and took the tour. This is going to be a course with a little of everything: tight technical holes and some long and more open holes. One thing's for sure--par will be a good score.
I'd say it's about 70-80% complete, with some work days left to finish 3-4 holes and then it will be ready for baskets and tee pads.
Should be open in the Spring. Stay tuned for more opportunities to help!

I have talked to them several times since the work day and they are working hard to get things organized for us to complete the course.Wayne and I are going to try to install a basket or two just to gauge the install time and the complete install should happen on Dec 30th if all goes as planned. this would mark the unofficial opening of the course since the tee boxes and tee signs won't go into until after the first of the year. This is also when the retaining wall on hole 1 would be done. I will keep everyone posted for any additional work days and the basket install. thanks again, and I can't wait for us all to get out and play this course.

Shaun,
It took Doug and I about 6-7 hours to install the baskets at Lackland. The AF poured the holes and set the sleeve the week before we did this so all we had to do was assemble the baskets and then drop and lock them into place. The tedious part of this was putting the baskets together. They come in three sections which you have probably already seen. Doug started about two hours before I got off of work that day and had about 6 baskets completed. When I arrived we started a small assembly line and was able to knock the remaining 13 baskets out in about 3 hours. The long part after that was that only 6 baskets would fit in that back of my truck. We had to make 3 trips back to the warehouse to get another load of baskets. There was also a little down time playing a couple of holes after the baskets were dropped and locked.
One thing that you will need for the assembly and it is not mentioned in the instructions is a step stool or something of that nature. You want to be able to stand the basket up to put the top piece on that has the chains. You can get the chains screwed up and not totally around the pole if you do not drop this piece on correctly...examples were the two baskets at Nani Falcone.
Good luck and let me know when you are doing the main assembly, If I am in town, i'll be glad to help.
I cant wait for this to finish! its the closest to where I live.

Worked on hole 14 today... it is practically finished... hole 15 still needs a lot of work but it's the last one. I am going to try calling Larry about his tree trimming crew in the next day or two. We may go for 15 being a shorter hole (with a longer walk from 14) just to get started and then extent the fairway back to the intended Tee position. I will be calling the city about Dec 30 being the day to install the baskets and if all goes well they will be in on Sunday.
cool cool...i will defiantly check this out once you are done with it
I was out there today and I dont know how this is close to being finished. I walked to the back by the power lines...saw a barbed wire fence...I need to grab your map on your website to see exactly where the baskets are going. Even with the massive amount of rain on Friday night we painstakingly installed all 18 basket sleeves this weekend plus a practice basket. There were several holes that we had to scoop water out of but it was all worth it. I have all the baskets and as we assemble them we will get them out and locked in. We will be scheduling small work days to fine tune the holes and after a little work we can play the course. All the holes are cut in except hole 15. Plus hole 15 has large brush piles blocking the end of the fairway. We hope to get those moved very soon. Larry, if you read this, I will be calling you soon about your tree crew. I already gave your number to the city so they can contact you about contracting. Dont know if they will follow through or not, but your expertise will be appreciated if you are available to help us.
Dont forget to check www.wolfriders.com (http://www.wolfriders.com) for pictures and the course layout. I am slowly updating the course map with sketches of the holes. If anyone hits any aces as we get baskets in, please let me know I would to keep track of as much as possible for posterity sake including record rounds and stats. If all continues to go well, we will get the tee signs and concrete tee boxes January or February. Oh and the city should finish their retaining wall around hole 1s tee box in January.

Played it with a crew from San Marcos today. Still very rough in some of the back holes and walking trails need to be cleared and marked. Overall you got the makings of a great course so far!! Good mixture of shots that make hitting the fairway a premium, and even water on about four of the holes strategically placed very well. I'm going to give it another month and let the locals stomp out some more fairway space. Nothing like a little foot traffic to do half the work for you! :) Good job so far, keep up the good work!!!Scores: 55,58,60,66

We will try to put numbers on the baskets this Friday and while doing so, we will try to get some accurate distances to post.
To answer Johns question about hole 10 and 18... we put a lot of thought into the numbering and different reasons why it should be one way or the other. after many days of discussing it, we decided on what you see. With the figure eight design you can play the front or the back if you only have a short amount of time. the walk from the last hole is shorter this way as well as the fact that you wont cross someones fairway on the way out. but hey, you can take a shot at 18 between holes 9 and 10 if you want.... after all it's a fun hole.
now that i have played it a few times i think 18 is a perfect last hole. a lot of the holes have character..18 is one of them

I don't know if this is based on a lack of experience or simply poor observation but most courses are in floodplains and most courses experience this issue in one form or another. In saying the front nine was a little soggy, I was merely pointing out the fact that the front of the McClain course was affected so anyone going out to play could adjust accordingly. Some courses drain faster than others like Universal City. Since this course is brand new this type of information is unknown.
I have not met you and know nothing about you, but you seem to have comments about everything I'm not sure what your intent is especially considering the way this one starts off, however you seem to presume a certain amount of ignorance on the part of course designers.

there is only one real spot that is not cart friendly and that is the area around the basket on hole 5. this may be improved when we add some terraced steps leading up the side but that's a future project. with the planned bridges the rest of the course should not be a problem.

cleaned out around the basket a little, took the dead trees down in the middle of the fairway (was able to move some of it) opened up and cleared back to the area for the tee box. the hole measures 320 now. this one may be extended farthur back before the tee pads are poured.
the city said they would work on removing brush during the week and try to have the majority of it out by Feb 3... we'll see.

I nor wayne have been playing for the last year and have focused most of our time on this course. We created the thread under the forum that made sense "courses".
