Out of curiosity -

when the guide says that rounds below 2.5x the std deviation are out... how precise is that? For example, the mean of my last 12 months of rated rounds is 888.1111 with a min of 826, max of 949 and a std. deviation of 21.5555. 2.5x that is 53.8888. My lowest 2 rounds are 62.1111 and 53.1111 points deviated from mean. Depending on the precision and rounding methods of this calculation, the 835 round (53.1111 dev.) may or may not be counted.

Is it correct to say that rounds "within one point of 2.5x std dev. below the mean will not be counted"? or is it strict to the point of including rounds that are right on that borderline?

I've played horribly in sanctioned events this year... so I know my rating is going down... this is more for clarification so that I can put the proper formula into a program I'm currently writing. Someone in the know please respond :)

its the average, not the mean.

You can't calculate it precisely because your ratings are maintained in the data file as "differential per hole" (DPH) values for each round. You see your DPH values converted to round ratings but there's some rounding involved. The standard deviation is actually calculated using your DPH values so it's possible you'll be off by a point or two using the published round ratings in regard to whether a round ends up getting dropped or not.

:D

Chuck - Thanks for the clarification. My little calculation isn't expected to be the official one, just something to play with. I figured a margin of error around 0.5% or so, but it's close enough to show me a ballpark of how a really bad or really good round will ultimately affect my rating. Now if I had read-access to the official database.... ;)

Even the PDGA and I don't have that. Roger is the man.
(There are backup files should something unfortunate happen)

Chuck, I think you mentioned to me a book you're compiling on all of the statistics, the numbers, everything of that nature, of disc golf... any clue how many years it'll be until we get to see anything like this out in the wild for sale?

And if you ever need somebody to do some proof-reading of parts of it...

At least two years considering I'll be spending lots of time getting ready to help host the Pro Worlds next year.

Good point, good point. I just can't wait to see that. All the numbers that go into your course building... *drools*

actually... *heads over to ASK CHUCK*

All this being considered, my 770 round which is 100 pts south of my rating won't be counted then?

More than 100 pts south will be dropped for sure and maybe less if your standard deviation is small enough.
